Turbidites, deposited by sub‐aqueous gravity flows, are common in sedimentary archives worldwide and present a unique challenge and opportunity when reconstructing past vegetation through pollen analysis. When sampling pollen from a sediment core for palaeovegetation records, it is common practice to target background sediments (i.e. pelagic sediment) and avoid sampling turbidites, as they are presumed to portray a misleading picture of past vegetation. This assumption stems from our limited understanding of pollen abundance and distribution through turbidites, meaning that palynologists overlook deposits that could potentially be used to reconstruct past vegetation and climate. We present pollen assemblage and sedimentological data from four recent (<150 years) deep marine turbidite deposits from the Hikurangi Subduction Margin, Aotearoa‐New Zealand, with the aim of understanding the abundance and distribution of pollen in fine‐grained turbidites. We find that pollen is diluted in the bases of turbidites, but despite this dilution, the proportions of different pollen taxa remain consistent through each turbidite. These results confirm that pollen can be sampled from turbidites for palaeovegetation reconstructions and that sampling the fine‐grained upper parts of turbidites will provide the best pollen recovery. This is the second of a two-part New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics Special Issue on understanding sedimentary systems in Aotearoa-New Zealand's Hikurangi Subduction Margin (HSM). This volume includes six research papers that explore sediment-tectonic interactions operating over a range of spatio-temporal scales. We take a distinctive perspective moving from the subduction deformation front in the Hikurangi Trough, upslope to the subduction wedge, and onshore to the Coastal Ranges. Temporally, papers span the onset of subduction in the Miocene, to disentangling provenance of turbidity currents triggered by the 2016 CE Kaikōura Earthquake. Collectively, the studies in the special issue reveal a complicated and continually evolving margin, where active tectonics and volcanism, coupled with vigorous climatic and oceanographic drivers, modulate erosion, transport, and depositional cycles of vast volumes of terrigenous sediment into ocean basins. Despite decades of significant research advances in our knowledge of the HSM, considerable scope remains for future work. A deeper understanding of fundamental tectonic-sediment interactions operating on active margins, along with the significant geohazards they pose remain outstanding research needs. Collectively, Volumes 1 and 2 highlight enduring interest in the HSM as a globally important natural laboratory for the study of subduction zone geoscience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 2016 Mw 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake triggered simultaneous turbidity currents down ten submarine canyons along a 200 km stretch of the continental slope, east of New Zealand. Some discharged into the Hikurangi Channel which flows >1500 km northwards along the abyssal trench floor. To better understand provenance continuity in deep-sea sedimentary records, foraminiferal samples from the 2016 turbidites from 17 canyon and channel cores were used to investigate the source histories of these submarine gravity flows. Cluster analyses suggest the canyon provenances for most 2016 turbidite faunas should be determinable using a combination of the relative abundance of key benthic genera, planktic foraminiferal index (dissolution), absolute test abundance and planktic % of the foraminiferal faunas. Two ordinations (PCA, PCO) based on these parameters were used to infer provenance and flow history. One hundred kilometres down the Hikurangi Channel, faunas in the 2016 turbidite confirm a Kaikōura Canyon source. Further downstream, 200–500 km north of the confluence with Campbell, Cook and Opouawe canyons, faunas indicate that the 2016 turbidite in the northern Hikurangi Channel is a composite deposit, from an initial Opouawe-Cook canyon-sourced turbidity current over-ridden and partly mixed with, a Kaikōura Canyon-sourced flow that arrived sometime later. Turbidity flows can transport massive amounts of sediment across large distances with dramatic, long-lasting impacts on deep-sea benthic communities. The 2016 Mw 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake triggered a canyon-flushing event in Kaikōura Canyon, New Zealand, which included significant submarine mass wasting, debris, and turbidity flows. This event provided an excellent opportunity to investigate the effects of large-scale natural disturbance on benthic ecosystems. Benthic meiofauna community structure before and after the event was analysed from a time series of sediment cores collected 10 years and 6 years before, and 10 weeks, 10 months, and 4 years after the disturbance. Immediately after the 2016 event abundances of all meiofauna dramatically decreased. Four years later the meiofauna community had recovered and was no longer distinguishable from the pre-event community. However, the nematode component of the community was similar, but not fully comparable to the pre-event community by 4 years after the disturbance. Community recovery was systematically correlated to changes in the physical characteristics of the habitat caused by the disturbance, using physical and biochemical variables derived from sediment cores, namely: sediment texture, organic matter, and pigment content. While these environmental variables explained relatively little of the overall variability in meiofauna community structure, particle size, food availability and quality were significant components. The minimum threshold time for the meiofauna community to fully recover was estimated to be between 3.9 and 4.7 years, although the predicted recovery time for the nematode community was longer, between 4.6 and 5 years. We consider the management implications of this study in comparison to the few studies of large-scale disturbances in the deep sea, in terms of their relevance to the efficacy of the marine reserve that encompasses Kaikōura Canyon, along with potential implications for our understanding of the impacts of anthropogenic seafloor disturbances, such as seabed mining. Enclosed depressions, termed pockmarks, are widespread seafloor morphologies, commonly associated with fluid seepage. This study provides the first detailed documentation of pockmarks offshore the South Westland margin of the South Island/Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa New Zealand. Pockmarks are identified from multibeam bathymetry (25-m grid) through manual and semi-automated selection in water depths of 100–2600 m. Pockmarks are most concentrated at 400–850 m water depth on continental slope areas between submarine canyons. A continuum of pockmark morphologies includes – (1) large (>0.5 km2 area) and irregularly shaped pockmarks above partially infilled channels; (2) small and circular pockmarks (∼100–200 m diameter; ∼0.008–0.03 km2 area) occurring between canyons; and (3) elongated and intermediate size pockmarks, generally oriented along-slope and often occurring above buried sediment waves. Elongated pockmarks appear to have been modified by near-seafloor oceanographic and/or turbidity current flows. Pockmark features occur across many locations around Aotearoa, including both the eastern and western margins. Some similar pockmark morphologies are identified in these different tectonic, sedimentary, and oceanographic settings, suggesting that there may be some similarity in formative mechanisms, but clear mechanisms leading to their formation remain enigmatic. We analyzed the contributions of clouds, turbidity, and tides to variations in irradiance and predicted benthic primary productivity on a coastal coral reef over a period of 2 yr (2001-2002). At 1.5 m below lowest astronomical tide (3.8-m tidal range), attenuation by suspended solids (turbidity) accounted for 74-79% of the total annual variation in irradiance, clouds for 14-17%, and tides for 7-10%. With increasing depth, the contribution from turbidity, to irradiance variation increased asymptotically toward 95%. Fourier (spectral) analyses indicated that the benthic irradiance regime followed strong 8-week periodicities and weaker 2-4-week periodicities. The 8-week cycle was driven primarily by turbidity and secondarily by clouds and matches the periodicity of the intraseasonal Madden--Julian atmospheric oscillation. The weaker 3-4-week irradiance cycle was driven by turbidity: the 2-week cycle was driven by tides and, to a lesser extent, clouds. Comparisons of the benthic irradiance pattern with predictions of physiologically optimal irradiance levels (parameter [E.sub.k]) for the coral Turbinaria mesenterina suggested that corals at the site alternate between states of potential light limitation and light stress, with a 2-8-week periodicity caused mainly by variations in turbidity. The effect of external sources of light reduction, such as episodic runoff events, on the energetics of benthic primary producers is likely to vary critically with the timing of such events.

The active Aotea and Evans Bay faults underlie Wellington Harbour/Te Whanganui a Tara, and are inferred to extend south beneath Wellington City and eastern suburbs. The Aotea Fault dips east, has reverse displacement, and projects onshore beneath the western flank of Mount Victoria/Matairangi and Te Aro, where a basement fault has been inferred previously. East of Mount Victoria, the Evans Bay Fault may dip west and extend southward beneath the Rongotai isthmus. Marine seismic-reflection profiles tied to dated sediment cores indicate vertical separation rates of ∼0.6 ± 0.3 mm/yr on both the Aotea and Evans Bay faults, and evidence of at least two, and one, seafloor-rupturing earthquakes during the last 10,000 years on each fault, respectively. Previously, neither fault has been recognised specifically in seismic hazard assessments of New Zealand. We infer that earthquakes activating these faults have magnitude Mw ≥ 7, potential rupture lengths exceeding 30 km, and possibly involve multiple faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
