1. TAPAS: Train-less Accuracy Predictor for Architecture Search

Abstract

In recent years an increasing number of researchers and practitioners have been suggesting algorithms for large-scale neural network architecture search: genetic algorithms, reinforcement learning, learning curve extrapolation, and accuracy predictors. None of them, however, demonstrated high-performance without training new experiments in the presence of unseen datasets. We propose a new deep neural network accuracy predictor, that estimates in fractions of a second classification performance for unseen input datasets, without training. In contrast to previously proposed approaches, our prediction is not only calibrated on the topological network information, but also on the characterization of the dataset-difficulty which allows us to re-tune the prediction without any training. Our predictor achieves a performance which exceeds 100 networks per second on a single GPU, thus creating the opportunity to perform large-scale architecture search within a few minutes. We present results of two searches performed in 400 seconds on a single GPU. Our best discovered networks reach 93.67% accuracy for CIFAR-10 and 81.01% for CIFAR-100, verified by training. These networks are performance competitive with other automatically discovered state-of-the-art networks however we only needed a small fraction of the time to solution and computational resources.

Abstract

Humans live and breathe every day in an environment full of natural and artificial radiation. Radiation's nature is energetic particles and/or electromagnetic waves. The damage to tissue from ionizing radiation is being studied decades ago. In contrast, concerns, about the potential health risk associated with unprecedented exposure to non-ionizing radiation, emerge nowadays. Scientists expect objective results to be revealed after few decades of extended use of many low frequency devices or equipment, as well as wireless net and mobile phones. This paper reviews the sources and the most recent results of the effects of radiation, focusing however on the non-ionizing part and, especially, the radiation from radio waves and mobile phones. Abstract

The aim of this work was to prepare composite ZnCdSeS quantum dot (QD) flexible films and to examine their optical properties under ultraviolet excitation. PMMA/QD ZnCdSeS composite films, with emission covering the visual spectrum (480–630 nm) were prepared with concentrations 10 mg/mL and 20 mg/mL by homogenously diluting dry powder QD samples in toluene and subsequently mixing with a PMMA/MMA polymer solution to the final ZnCdSeS/Toluene mixture. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the produced films were obtained. The ZnCdSeS films were excited by ultraviolet light of varying intensities and the spectral matching with various optical detectors was estimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Organic Cosolutes as Stabilizers of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase in Storage: an Interpretation of Their Action

Abstract

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.3 1) is rapidly inactivated in dilute extracts from leaves of the C4 grass Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. Physiological osmotica (glycerol, betaine, proline, sorbitol and sucrose) and synthetic inert polymers like polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyethylene glycol prevent inactivation in a concentration-dependent manner. In a partially purified preparation (10.5 mol CO2 min-1 mg-1), lability to inactivation and the minimum levels of cosolvents needed for complete protection become higher as the protein is diluted. Exogenous protein (bovine serum albumin) was much less effective than native protein in stabilising activity. The results could be interpreted on the basis of the exclusion volume theory and the assumption that the catalytic activity is mainly due to a polymeric form which is maintained only at high concentrations of the enzymic protein.

12. Effects of Enhanced UV-B Radiation on the Drought Semi-deciduous Mediterranean Shrub Phlomis fruticosa under Field Conditions are Season-specific

Abstract

The effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on Phlomis fruticosa L. were recorded during a 1- year field study. Plants received ambient or ambient plus supplemental UV-B radiation (simulating a 15% stratospheric ozone depletion over Patras, 38.3N, 29.1E) and only natural precipitation, i.e. they were simultaneously exposed to other natural stresses, particularly water stress during summer. Actual, biologically equivalent UV-B doses were 8.55 and 11.21 kJ m-2 day-1 during the summer maximum (14 July) and 0.85 and 1.12 kJ m-2 day-1 during the winter minimum (27 December) for control and W-B plants respectively, while intermediate values were received for the rest of the year. lho seasonally separated effects could be distinguished. The first was a growth response, observed at late spring, in the absence of any simultaneous stress and at the period most favourable for this shrub, during which it shows maximum photosynthetic performance. The effect was an inhibition of new leaf development and premature falling of old leaves, leading to lower leaf numbers and total leaf areas for the rest of the experimental period. The second effect coincided with the summer drought, during which net photosynthesis, chlorophyll content and photochemical efficiency of photosystem II decreased in the controls, but a trend towards a further decrease in W-B irradiated plants was also evident. Changes in total carotenoids were negligible, leading to higher carotenoid to chlorophyll ratios under enhanced W-B radiation. Photosynthetic parameters recovered to the same levels in control and UV-B irradiated plants after the first heavy rains in autumn. At final harvest, considerable decreases in total dry mass were evident for UV-B irradiated plants, while plant height, UV-B-absorbing compounds, relative water content and leaf specific mass were unaffected during the whole experimental period. UV-B effects may depend not only on co-occumng natural stresses, but on the specific sensitivity of individual developmental stages as well, i.e. they may be season-specific.

13. Radon exposure in the thermal spas of Lesvos Island--Greece

Abstract

The aim of this work is to study the exposure due to radon to bathers and personnel in the spas of Lesvos Island under a specific use pattern. 222Rn concentrations in the supplying water were measured during a long time period. Variations in indoor 222Rn, attached and unattached progenies, and influence of the ambient atmosphere were thoroughly analysed during bath treatment for the purpose of investigating a consequent probable short-term health impact. Concentration peaks both for 222Rn and PAEC were found to appear during bathtubs filling. These peaks considered imposing an additional short-term radiation burden for spa users. The additional doses delivered to bathers during bath treatment were found to be very low and for personnel did not exceed the value of 5 mSv per year.

14. Study of a Greek area with enhanced indoor radon concentrations

Abstract

In this paper the focus is on Arnea Chalkidikis, an area in Greece with granitic geological background and indications of possible elevated radon concentration indoors. Data are reported of indoor radon measurements with etched track detectors and those used for dosimetric estimations. Moreover, data are reported on soil gas and soil radon concentrations in Arnea, as well as radon and uranium concentrations in water samples. From the measured radon concentrations in water samples the contribution to the overall dose has been calculated. For a period of 1 month, indoor radon and progeny activity has also been monitored in the dwelling that has the maximum indoor radon concentration in Greece. This dwelling is in Arnea and the dose delivered to the inhabitants has been calculated. Mean annual effective dose due to indoor radon was 4.5 mSv and about 11% of this was due to the use of water. Mean soil gas concentration and soil radon concentration were (90 ± 30) kBq m-3 (P <0.05) and (30 ± 5) kBq m-3 (P <0.05) respectively. Mean uranium concentration of the water samples was (98 ± 13) mBq I-1 (P <0.05).

Abstract

This paper presents the Medical Physics Department-Radon Dosemeter (MPD-RD). A calibration technique is introduced and the results of the calibration of the MPD-RDs are reported. A method for stabilising the radon concentration was employed and checked. The results showed that the MPD-RDs respond exponentially with time and linearly to exposures.

Abstract

International audience; This declaration, signed by an interdisciplinary task force of 234 experts from 83 different countries with different backgrounds, highlights the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance and the need for appropriate use of antibiotic agents and antifungal agents in hospitals worldwide especially focusing on surgical infections. As such, it is our intent to raise awareness among healthcare workers and improve antimicrobial prescribing. To facilitate its dissemination, the declaration was translated in different languages.
