Abstract

This study analyzed the relationship between academic performance and the development of transversal competencies of reasoning for complexity and digital transformation in higher education students. The Tec21 educational model of the Tecnológico de Monterrey was used as a framework for analysis. Data from 33,319 students were analyzed following a CRISP-DM methodology, first an exploratory analysis was performed on the data to recognize and understand the presence of competencies in the educational model. Machine Learning methodologies, including Random Forest and XGBoost, were then employed to identify the most influential curricular and co-curricular variables in the acquisition of studied competencies. The results revealed a significant correlation between academic performance and the acquisition of the competencies, highlighting that high grades are consistently associated with success in developing these competencies. This study extends the understanding of how competency-focused educational interventions can facilitate professional and personal development in a labor market that demands advanced skills and adaptability. The discussion focuses on the implications of these findings for formulating educational policies and pedagogical practices that prioritize both academic achievement and the comprehensive development of essential 21st-century competencies. From a broader perspective, our work is framed in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 Quality Education and is oriented to identify variables that boost the acquisition of 21st Century Skills in higher education contexts. Abstract

In this study, we evaluate how ChatGPT complements and enriches the traditional flipped learning strategy in higher education, particularly in engineering courses. Using an experimental design involving 356 students from basic programming courses in undergraduate engineering programs, we compared the normalized learning gain between groups that used the ChatGPT-assisted flipped learning strategy (focus groups) and those that followed a traditional video-based flipped learning methodology (control groups). The intervention lasted ten weeks, with two sessions of two hours each week. A pre-test–post-test analysis revealed that the focus groups showed significant improvement in normalized learning gain values compared to the control groups. These results confirm that incorporating ChatGPT into the flipped learning strategy can significantly enhance student performance by providing a more active, interactive, and personalized approach during the teaching–learning process. We conclude that the flipped learning strategy, upgraded with the assistance of ChatGPT, provides an effective means to improve understanding and application of complex concepts in programming courses, with potential to be extended to other areas of study in higher education. This study opens routes for future research on the integration of artificial intelligence into innovative pedagogical strategies with the goal of scaffolding the learning experience and improving educational outcomes. 12. Facilitating Mathematical Competencies Development for Undergraduate Students During the Pandemic Through ad-hoc Technological Learning Environments

Abstract

In this article we show how to facilitate the development of mathematical skills using 3D surface visualization tools and virtual environments in an online, project-based learning context. The “Lumen” software is presented, which is an ad-hoc solution, designed and developed to visualize and combine mathematical surfaces in 3D, based on their associated equations. Several activities were designed with the use of Lumen, to measure the learning gain and problem-solving skills of the students, obtaining that a mean learning gain of 43% was observed on 242 students on the analysis of the pre- and post-tests for the first monitored activity, while a mean learning gain of 30% was observed on 210 students on the analysis of the second monitored activity. Based on these analyses, we make the point that although remote learning in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic poses difficult challenges for learners and professors, the use of ad-hoc technological applications is an important resource that supports the reinterpretation of the learning process, as it shifts the focus to the development of skills through active learning.

Abstract

This work addresses the need to have a remote immersive multi-sensory virtual environment in which people can come together to make collaborative decisions remotely in real-time, allowing decision-makers to feel as if they were in a Decision-Making Center in person, but with the advantages offered by multi-sensory, immersive, remote, collaborative virtual reality in real-time. Therefore, software architecture is proposed that allows the creation of Multi-sensory Virtual Decision-Making Centers (MVDC) with the capabilities of being collaborative, immersive, and remote in real-time. Together with this architecture, a multi-sensory environment was created, this MVDC has the characteristics and capabilities to carry out remote collaborative decision-making sessions in real-time in addition to adding an immersive multi-sensory experience while using it, ensuring that the sense of presence among decision-makers is not lost and allowing the remote decision-making session to be as similar to a face-to-face session.

Abstract

One of the most important objectives of serious games is to detonate behavioral changes of participants. Serious games generate engagement, they are meaningful, entertaining, and immersive. However, when the game represents a complex system, it contains a great number of variables and the relationship between its decision components are not entirely clear. Consequently, it is necessary to offer a set of tools that increase the data visualization of the players and help in the decision-making process must be provided. In our university, logistics professors have designed a simulator for logistics decision making. On the one hand, the game has gained acceptance from the student community, but on the other hand, several students do not accomplish a satisfactory performance. Therefore, these students fail to notice lots of variable interrelationships in the game, and they do not develop the skill required to follow a good decision-making process. The goal is two folded. On the one hand, the improvement of the participant's comprehension of a complex logistical system must be reached. On the other hand, the clarity on the decision-making process has to be laid out. A set of visualization support tools were created to accomplish those objectives. Neither of the tools aim to influence the decision-making process nor to show decision alternatives to the participant, but to highlight a few key performance indicators, constraints, and data that the students can use when making the decisions. In this paper it is presented how the participants have improved their understanding about the logistic system represented in the game, when the support tools are used. Moreover, their motivation has increased, they are more involved and committed to learn. Overall, their decision-making strategies have been modified and they have shown a better comprehension of the game structure. This paper contributes to underline the importance of visualization in student's learning, considering that currently big data, industry 4.0, as well as internet of things have gained a significant relevance in our everyday life. The design of strategic games involving these new variables are necessary. Abstract

0000-0001-9270-0052 Considering that there are few studies in which technological tools are used to analyze the relationship between auditory stimuli and emotions, the development of an applied methodology was proposed. It allowed the categorization of auditory stimuli according to the emotional impact on the subjects, using statistical tools. An experiment was proposed using automated facial expression analysis to identify the emotional responses generated, having a total of 50 participants. The information obtained was processed through various statistical programs, including SSPS® and JMPTM. The statistical analysis was divided into 3 stages. The first one that sought to identify the moment where the emotional response appeared once the stimulus was presented. The second one looked for possible associations between emotions to establish patterns of similarity between them. And the third, which corresponded to the search for identification of the stimuli that could evoke specific emotions. Among the findings, the delay between the appearance of the emotional response and the start of the stimuli was determined. Abstract

El presente trabajo se ha desarrollado para proporcionar un procedimiento básico para la realización de auditorías en seguridad informática, específicamente en el área de redes con arquitectura cliente-servidor, este procedimiento se puede extender a diversas áreas de los sistemas de información y puede profundizar en cada uno de los elementos evaluados dentro de una organización. En este procedimiento se han propuesto puntos de evaluación en materia de seguridad informática, importantes para determinar el nivel de fiabilidad del sistema en general, dejando en claro que cada práctica debe desarrollarse de acuerdo a las características propias de la organización y de su sistema de información. Los elementos que se consideraron para el desarrollo del procedimiento auditor se dividen en dos categorías: la seguridad física y la seguridad lógica. Dentro de la seguridad física están presentes las políticas de seguridad física, el acceso físico a los componentes de hardware y al recinto de servidores. Por parte de la seguridad lógica se consideraron los aspectos de seguridad en el acceso, en el perímetro y en el canal. La operatividad del procedimiento se basa en la implementación de diversos recursos que permiten el desarrollo de la labor auditora como: herramientas de software, cuestionarios, listas de verificación, etc. que hacen posible exhibir de manera sistemática los resultados obtenidos. Para llevar a cabo el desarrollo de este procedimiento, se hizo un análisis de diversas metodologías de carácter libre, para el desarrollo de auditorías en tecnologías de información, de las cuales se tomaron los aspectos más importantes y se enfocaron al tema de seguridad informática, basándose en un estándar de código abierto para su diseño. Se implementó dicho procedimiento para evaluar los resultados y la puesta en marcha de una auditoría dentro de la red interna en el Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca; esto permitió recopilar información relevante en el tema de seguridad informática, para definir una serie de medidas que permitan minimizar los riesgos y las probabilidades de fallos en la red interna a causa de acciones malintencionadas o descuidos.
