The hydrodynamic forces acting on an undulating swimming fish consist of two components: a drag-based resistive force and a reactive force originating from the necessary acceleration of an added mass of water. Lighthill's elongated-body theory, based on potential flow, provides a framework for calculating this reactive force. By leveraging the high aspect ratio of most fish, the theory simplifies the problem into a series of independent two-dimensional slices of fluids along the fish's body, which exchange momentum with the body and neighbouring slices. Using momentum conservation arguments, Lighthill's theory predicts the total thrust generated by an undulating fish, based solely on the dimensions and kinematics of its caudal fin. However, the assumption of independent slices has led to the common misconception that the flow produced lacks a longitudinal component. In this paper, we revisit Lighthill's theory, offering a modern reinterpretation using essential singularities of potential flows. We then extend it to predict the full three-dimensional flow field induced by the fish's body motion. Bubble-propelled catalytic colloids stand out as a uniquely efficient design for artificial controllable micromachines, but so far lack a general theoretical framework that explains the physics of their propulsion. Here we develop a combined diffusive and hydrodynamic theory of bubble growth near a spherical catalytic colloid, that allows us to explain the underlying mechanism and the influence of environmental and material parameters. We identify two dimensionless groups, related to colloidal activity and the background fluid, that govern a saddle-node bifurcation of the bubble growth dynamics, and calculate the generated flows analytically for both slip and no slip boundary conditions on the bubble. We finish with a discussion of the assumptions and predictions of our model in the context of existing experimental results, and conclude that some of the observed behaviour, notably the ratchet-like gait, stems from peculiarities of the experimental setup rather than fundamental physics of the propulsive mechanism., Comment: Main text 20 pages, appendix 23 pages. 8 figures

Symbolic regression (SR) searches for analytical expressions representing the relationship between a set of explanatory and response variables. Current SR methods assume a single dataset extracted from a single experiment. Nevertheless, frequently, the researcher is confronted with multiple sets of results obtained from experiments conducted with different setups. Traditional SR methods may fail to find the underlying expression since the parameters of each experiment can be different. In this work we present Multi-View Symbolic Regression (MvSR), which takes into account multiple datasets simultaneously, mimicking experimental environments, and outputs a general parametric solution. This approach fits the evaluated expression to each independent dataset and returns a parametric family of functions f(x; theta) simultaneously capable of accurately fitting all datasets. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MvSR using data generated from known expressions, as well as real-world data from astronomy, chemistry and economy, for which an a priori analytical expression is not available. Results show that MvSR obtains the correct expression more frequently and is robust to hyperparameters change. In real-world data, it is able to grasp the group behavior, recovering known expressions from the literature as well as promising alternatives, thus enabling the use of SR to a large range of experimental scenarios., Comment: Published in GECCO-2024. 11 pages, 5 figures

Janus phoretic particles exploit chemical energy stored in their environment to self-propel. These active particles modify and respond to their hydrodynamic and chemical environments, thus giving them a sensibility to external flows and other particles. Furthermore, experimental observations and analysis on biological or synthetic active suspensions indicate that hydro-chemical interparticle interactions lead to non-trivial collective behaviour (e.g., cluster formation of phoretic particles or bacterial swarming) and that the response of the suspensions to shear flows is non-trivial. In fact, it can lead to significant reductions in viscosity due to the energy conversion at microscopic scales. In this work, using simulations of a continuum kinetic model, we analyse the dynamics and response to shear and confinement of dilute suspensions of chemotactic phoretic particles that reorient and drift toward the chemical solutes released by their neighbours. We show that a 1D transient steady distribution driven by the effect of confinement is a common feature considered and analyse its stability for varying confinement strength and shear rate. Active drops emit/absorb chemical solutes, whose concentration gradients cause interfacial flows driving their own transport and the propulsion of the droplet. Such non-linear coupling enables active drops to achieve directed self-propulsion despite their isotropy, if the ratio of advective-to-diffusive solute transport, i.e. the Peclet number Pe, is larger than a finite critical threshold. In most experimental situations, active drops are non-neutrally buoyant and thus swim along rigid surfaces; yet theoretical descriptions of their non-linear motion focus almost exclusively on unbounded domains to circumvent geometric complexity. To overcome this gap in understanding, we investigate the spontaneous emergence and nonlinear saturation of propulsion of an isotropic phoretic colloid along a rigid wall, to which it is confined by a constant external force (e.g., gravity). This phoretic particle model is considered here as a limiting case for a viscous active drop. We show that, for moderate Pe, the particle motion and associated chemical transport reduce the chemically-induced wall repulsion, thereby causing the particle to swim progressively closer to the wall as Pe increases. Far from hindering self-propulsion, this reduction in the particle-wall separation is accompanied by a wall-induced efficient rearrangement of the solute concentration gradients driving the particle, thus augmenting its swimming speed., Comment: to appear in Phys. Similarly to their biological counterparts, suspensions of chemically-active autophoretic swimmers exhibit nontrivial dynamics involving self-organization processes as a result of inter-particle interactions. Using a kinetic model for a dilute suspension of autochemotactic Janus particles, we analyse the effect of a confined pressure-driven flow on these collective behaviours and the impact of chemotactic aggregation on the effective viscosity of the active fluid. Four dynamic regimes are identified when increasing the strength of the imposed pressure-driven flow, each associated with a different collective behaviour resulting from the competition of flow- and chemically-induced reorientation of the swimmers together with the constraints of confinement. Interestingly, we observe that the effect of the pusher (resp. puller) hydrodynamic signature, which is known to reduce (resp. increase) the effective viscosity of a sheared suspension, is inverted upon the emergence of autochemotactic aggregation. Microscopic active droplets are able to swim autonomously in viscous flows: this puzzling feature stems from solute exchanges with the surrounding fluid via surface reactions or their spontaneous solubilisation, and the interfacial flows resulting from these solutes' gradients. Contrary to asymmetric active colloids, these isotropic droplets swim spontaneously by exploiting the nonlinear coupling of solute transport with self-generated Marangoni flows, which is also responsible for secondary transitions to more complex individual and collective dynamics. Thanks to their simple design and their sensitivity to physico-chemical signals, they are fascinating physicists, chemists, biologists and fluid dynamicists alike to analyse viscous self-propulsion and collective dynamics in active matter systems, to develop synthetic cellular models or to perform targeted biomedical or engineering applications. To spontaneously break their intrinsic symmetry and self-propel at the micron scale, isotropic active colloidal particles and droplets exploit the non-linear convective transport of chemical solutes emitted/consumed at their surface by the surface-driven fluid flows generated by these solutes. Significant progress was recently made to understand the onset of self-propulsion and non-linear dynamics. Yet, most models ignore a fundamental experimental feature, namely the spatial confinement of the colloid, and its effect on propulsion. In this work, the self-propulsion of an isotropic colloid inside a capillary tube is investigated numerically. A flexible computational framework is proposed based on a finite-volume approach on adaptative octree-grids and embedded boundary methods. This method is able to account for complex geometric confinement, the nonlinear coupling of chemical transport and flow fields, and the precise resolution of the surface boundary conditions, that drive the system's dynamics. Somewhat counter-intuitively, spatial confinement promotes the colloid's spontaneous motion by reducing the minimum advection-to-diffusion ratio or P\'clet number, Pe, required to self-propel; furthermore, self-propulsion velocities are significantly modified as the colloid-to-capillary size ratio $\kappa$ is increased, reaching a maximum at fixed Pe for an optimal confinement $0<\kappa<1$. These properties stem from a fundamental change in the dominant chemical transport mechanism with respect to the unbounded problem : with diffusion now restricted in most directions by the confining walls, the excess solute is predominantly convected away downstream from the colloid, enhancing front-back concentration contrasts. Active droplets can swim spontaneously in viscous flows as a result of the non-linear convective transport of a chemical solute produced at their surface by the Marangoni and/or phoretic flows generated by this solute's inhomogeneous distribution, provided the ratio of convective-to-diffusive solute transport, or P\'eclet number $\mbox{Pe}$ is large enough. As the result of their net buoyancy, active drops typically evolve at a small finite distance $d$ from rigid boundaries. Yet, existing models systematically focus on unbounded flows, ignoring the effect of the wall proximity on the intrisically-nonlinear nature of their propulsion mechanism. In contrast, we obtain here a critical insight on the propulsion of active drops near walls by analysing their stability to non-axisymmetric perturbations and the resulting emergence of self-propulsion along the wall with no limiting assumption on the wall-distance $d$. Dipolar or quadrupolar axisymmetric (levitating) base states are identified depending on $d$ and $\mbox{Pe}$. Perhaps counter-intuitively, a reduction in the drop-wall separation $d$ is observed to destabilize these modes and to promote self-propulsion, as a result from the confinement-induced localisation of the chemical gradients driving the motion. Deep neural networks have become increasingly large and sparse, allowing for the storage of large-scale neural networks with decreased costs of storage and computation. Storage of a neural network with as many connections as the human brain is possible with current versions of the high-performance Apache Accumulo database and the Distributed Dimensional Data Model (D4M) software. Neural networks of such large scale may be of particular interest to scientists within the human brain Connectome community. To aid in research and understanding of artificial neural networks that parallel existing neural networks like the brain, a naming schema can be developed to label groups of neurons in the artificial network that parallel those in the brain. Chemically-active colloids modify the concentration of chemical solutes surrounding them in order to self-propel. In doing so, they generate long-ranged hydrodynamic flows and chemical gradients that modify the trajectories of other particles. As a result, the dynamics of reactive suspensions is fundamentally governed by hydro-chemical interactions. A full solution of the detailed hydro-chemical problem with many particles is challenging and computationally expensive. Most current methods rely on the Green's functions of the Laplace and Stokes operators to approximate the particle signatures in the far-field, which is only valid in the very dilute limit in simple geometries. To overcome these limitations, we propose a regularized mutipole framework, directly inspired by the Force Coupling Method (FCM), to model phoretic suspensions. Our approach, called Diffusio-phoretic FCM (DFCM), relies on grid-based volume averages of the concentration field to compute the particle surface concentration moments. These moments define the chemical multipoles of the diffusion (Laplace) problem and provide the swimming forcing of the Stokes equations. Unlike far-field models based on singularity superposition, DFCM accounts for mutually-induced dipoles. The accuracy of the method is evaluated against exact and accurate numerical solutions for a few canonical cases. We also quantify its improvements over far-field approximations for a wide range of inter-particle distances. Chemically active Janus particles generate tangential concentration gradients along their surface for self-propulsion. Although this is well studied in unbounded domains, the analysis in biologically relevant environments such as confinements is scarce. In this work, we study the motion of a Janus sphere in weak confinement. The particle is placed at an arbitrary location, with an arbitrary orientation between the two walls. Using the method of reflections, we study the effect of confining planar boundaries on the phoretic and hydrodynamic interactions, and their consequence on the Janus particle dynamics. The dynamical trajectories are analyzed using phase diagrams for different surface coverage of activity and solute-particle interactions. In addition to near wall states such as `sliding' and `hovering', we demonstrate that accounting for two planar boundaries reveals two new states: channel-spanning oscillations and damped oscillations around the centerline, which were characterized as `scattering' or `reflection' by earlier analyses on single-wall interactions. Using phase diagrams, we highlight the differences in inert-facing and active-facing Janus particles. We also compare the dynamics of Janus particles with squirmers for contrasting the chemical interactions with hydrodynamic effects. The infection rate of COVID-19 and lack of an approved vaccine has forced governments and health authorities to adopt lockdowns, increased testing, and contact tracing to reduce the spread of the virus. Digital contact tracing has become a supplement to the traditional manual contact tracing process. However, although there have been a number of digital contact tracing apps proposed and deployed, these have not been widely adopted owing to apprehensions surrounding privacy and security. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based privacy-preserving contact tracing protocol, "Did I Meet You" (DIMY), that provides full-lifecycle data privacy protection on the devices themselves as well as on the back-end servers, to address most of the privacy concerns associated with existing protocols. We have employed Bloom filters to provide efficient privacy-preserving storage, and have used the Diffie-Hellman key exchange for secret sharing among the participants. We show that DIMY provides resilience against many well known attacks while introducing negligible overheads. DIMY's footprint on the storage space of clients' devices and back-end servers is also significantly lower than other similar state of the art apps.

Active droplets emit a chemical solute at their surface that modifies their local interfacial tension. They exploit the nonlinear coupling of the convective transport of solute to the resulting Marangoni flows to self-propel. Such swimming droplets are by nature anti-chemotactic and are repelled by their own chemical wake or their neighbours. The rebound dynamics resulting from pairwise droplet interactions was recently analysed in detail for purely head-on collisions using a specific bispherical approach. Here, we extend this analysis and propose a reduced model of a generic collision to characterise the alignment and scattering properties of oblique droplet collisions and their potential impact on collective droplet dynamics. A systematic alignment of the droplets' trajectories is observed for symmetric collisions, when the droplets interact directly, and arises from the finite-time rearrangement of the droplets' chemical wake during the collision. Janus phoretic colloids (JPs) self-propel as a result of self-generated chemical gradients and exhibit spontaneous nontrivial dynamics within phoretic suspensions, on length scales much larger than the microscopic swimmer size. Such collective dynamics arise from the competition of (i) the self-propulsion velocity of the particles, (ii) the attractive/repulsive chemically-mediated interactions between particles and (iii) the flow disturbance they introduce in the surrounding medium. These three ingredients are directly determined by the shape and physico-chemical properties of the colloids' surface. Owing to such link, we adapt a recent and popular kinetic model for dilute suspensions of chemically-active JPs where the particles' far-field hydrodynamic and chemical signatures are intrinsically linked and explicitly determined by the design properties. Using linear stability analysis, we show that self-propulsion can induce a wave-selective mechanism for certain particles' configurations consistent with experimental observations. Numerical simulations of the complete kinetic model are further performed to analyze the relative importance of chemical and hydrodynamic interactions in the nonlinear dynamics. Our results show that regular patterns in the particle density are promoted by chemical signaling but prevented by the strong fluid flows generated collectively by the polarized particles, regardless of their chemotactic or antichemotactic nature (i.e. for both puller and pusher swimmers)., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, to appear in Physical Review Fluids

The ubiquity of connecting technologies in smart vehicles and the incremental automation of its functionalities promise significant benefits, including a significant decline in congestion and road fatalities. However, increasing automation and connectedness broadens the attack surface and heightens the likelihood of a malicious entity successfully executing an attack. In this paper, we propose a Blockchain based Framework for sEcuring smaRt vehicLes (B-FERL). B-FERL uses permissioned blockchain technology to tailor information access to restricted entities in the connected vehicle ecosystem. It also uses a challenge-response data exchange between the vehicles and roadside units to monitor the internal state of the vehicle to identify cases of in-vehicle network compromise. In order to enable authentic and valid communication in the vehicular network, only vehicles with a verifiable record in the blockchain can exchange messages. Through qualitative arguments, we show that B-FERL is resilient to identified attacks. Also, quantitative evaluations in an emulated scenario show that B-FERL ensures a suitable response time and required storage size compatible with realistic scenarios. Finally, we demonstrate how B-FERL achieves various important functions relevant to the automotive ecosystem such as trust management, vehicular forensics and secure vehicular networks., Comment: 11 Pages, 8 Figures

The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has taken the world by surprise, forcing lockdowns and straining public health care systems. COVID-19 is known to be a highly infectious virus, and infected individuals do not initially exhibit symptoms, while some remain asymptomatic. Thus, a non-negligible fraction of the population can, at any given time, be a hidden source of transmissions. In response, many governments have shown great interest in smartphone contact tracing apps that help automate the difficult task of tracing all recent contacts of newly identified infected individuals. However, tracing apps have generated much discussion around their key attributes, including system architecture, data management, privacy, security, proximity estimation, and attack vulnerability. In this article, we provide the first comprehensive review of these much-discussed tracing app attributes. We also present an overview of many proposed tracing app examples, some of which have been deployed countrywide, and discuss the concerns users have reported regarding their usage. We close by outlining potential research directions for next-generation app design, which would facilitate improved tracing and security performance, as well as wide adoption by the population at large., Comment: Paper has been accepted for publication in IEEE Access. We present here a comprehensive derivation for the speed of a small bottom-heavy sphere forced by a transverse acoustic field and thereby establish how density inhomogeneities may play a critical role in acoustic propulsion. The sphere is trapped at the pressure node of a standing wave whose wavelength is much larger than the sphere diameter. Due to its inhomogeneous density, the sphere oscillates in translation and rotation relative to the surrounding fluid. The perturbative flows induced by the sphere's rotation and translation are shown to generate a rectified inertial flow responsible for a net mean force on the sphere that is able to propel the particle within the zero-pressure plane. To avoid an explicit derivation of the streaming flow, the propulsion speed is computed exactly using a suitable version of the Lorentz reciprocal theorem. The propulsion speed is shown to scale as the inverse of the viscosity, the cube of the amplitude of the acoustic field and is a non trivial function of the acoustic frequency. Interestingly, for some combinations of the constitutive parameters (fluid to solid density ratio, moment of inertia and centroid to center of mass distance), the direction of propulsion is reversed as soon as the frequency of the forcing acoustic field becomes larger than a certain threshold. Artificial microswimmers, or "microbots" have the potential to revolutionise non-invasive medicine and microfluidics. Microbots that are powered by self-phoretic mechanisms, such as Janus particles, often harness a solute fuel in their environment. Traditionally, self-phoretic particles are point-like, but slender phoretic rods have become an increasingly prevalent design. While there has been substantial interest in creating efficient asymptotic theories for slender phoretic rods, hitherto such theories have been restricted to straight rods with axisymmetric patterning. However, modern manufacturing methods will soon allow fabrication of slender phoretic filaments with complex three-dimensional shape. In this paper, we develop a slender body theory for the solute of self-diffusiophoretic filaments of arbitrary three-dimensional shape and patterning. We demonstrate analytically that, unlike other slender body theories, first-order azimuthal variations arising from curvature and confinement can have a leading order contribution to the swimming kinematics.

We investigate the effects of a nearby free surface on the stability of a flexible plate in axial flow. Confinement by rigid boundaries is known to affect flag flutter thresholds and fluttering dynamics significantly, and this work considers the effects of a more general confinement involving a deformable free surface. To this end, a local linear stability is proposed for a flag in axial uniform flow and parallel to a free surface, using one-dimensional beam and potential flow models to revisit this classical fluid-structure interaction problem. The physical behaviour of the confining free surface is characterized by the Froude number, corresponding to the ratio of the incoming flow velocity to that of the gravity waves. After presenting the simplified limit of infinite span (i.e. two-dimensional problem), the results are generalized to include finite-span and lateral confinement effects. In both cases, three unstable regimes are identified for varying Froude number. Rigidly-confined flutter is observed for low Froude number, i.e. when the free surface behaves as a rigid wall, and is equivalent to the classical problem of the confined flag. When the flow and wave velocities are comparable, a new instability is observed before the onset of flutter (i.e. at lower reduced flow speed) and results from the resonance of a structural bending wave and one of the fundamental modes of surface gravity waves. Finally, for large Froude number (low effect of gravity), flutter is observed with significant but passive deformation of the free surface in response of the flag's displacement., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, to appear in the Journal of Fluids and Structures

Currently, blockchain proposals are being adopted to solve security issues, such as data integrity, resilience, and non-repudiation. To improve certain aspects, e.g., energy consumption and latency, of traditional blockchains, different architectures, algorithms, and data management methods have been recently proposed. For example, appendable-block blockchain uses a different data structure designed to reduce latency in block and transaction insertion. It is especially applicable in domains such as Internet of Things (IoT), where both latency and energy are key concerns. However, the lack of some features available to other blockchains, such as Smart Contracts, limits the application of this model. To solve this, in this work, we propose the use of Smart Contracts in appendable-block blockchain through a new model called context-based appendable-block blockchain. This model also allows the execution of multiple smart contracts in parallel, featuring high performance in parallel computing scenarios. Furthermore, we present an implementation for the context-based appendable-block blockchain using an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Finally, we execute this implementation in four different testbed. The results demonstrated a performance improvement for parallel processing of smart contracts when using the proposed model.

Chemically-active droplets exhibit complex avoiding trajectories. While heterogeneity is inevitable in active matter experiments, it is mostly overlooked in their modelling. Exploiting its geometric simplicity, we fully-resolve the head-on collision of two swimming droplets of different radii and demonstrate that even a small contrast in size critically conditions their collision and subsequent dynamics. We identify three fundamentally-different regimes. The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming our physical world into a complex and dynamic system of connected devices on an unprecedented scale. Connecting everyday physical objects is creating new business models, improving processes and reducing costs and risks. Recently, blockchain technology has received a lot of attention from the community as a possible solution to overcome security issues in IoT. However, traditional blockchains (such as the ones used in Bitcoin and Ethereum) are not well suited to the resource-constrained nature of IoT devices and also with the large volume of information that is expected to be generated from typical IoT deployments. To overcome these issues, several researchers have presented lightweight instances of blockchains tailored for IoT. For example, proposing novel data structures based on blocks with decoupled and appendable data. However, these researchers did not discuss how the consensus algorithm would impact their solutions, i.e., the decision of which consensus algorithm would be better suited was left as an open issue. In this paper, we improved an appendable-block blockchain framework to support different consensus algorithms through a modular design. We evaluated the performance of this improved version in different emulated scenarios and studied the impact of varying the number of devices and transactions and employing different consensus algorithms. Even adopting different consensus algorithms, results indicate that the latency to append a new block is less than 161ms (in the more demanding scenario) and the delay for processing a new transaction is less than 7ms, suggesting that our improved version of the appendable-block blockchain is efficient and scalable, and thus well suited for IoT scenarios.

The video footage produced by the surveillance cameras is an important evidence to support criminal investigations. Video evidence can be sourced from public (trusted) as well as private (untrusted) surveillance systems. This raises the issue of establishing integrity and auditability for information provided by the untrusted video sources. In this paper, we focus on a airport ecosystem, where multiple entities with varying levels of trust are involved in producing and exchanging video surveillance information. We present a framework to ensure the data integrity of the stored videos, allowing authorities to validate whether video footage has not been tampered. Our proposal uses a lightweight blockchain technology to store the video metadata as blockchain transactions to support the validation of video integrity. The proposed framework also ensures video auditability and non-repudiation. Our evaluations show that the overhead introduced by employing the blockchain to create and query the transactions introduces a very minor latency of a few milliseconds.

Phoretic mechanisms, whereby gradients of chemical solutes induce surface-driven flows, have recently been used to generate directed propulsion of patterned colloidal particles. When the chemical solutes diffuse slowly, an instability further provides active but isotropic particles with a route to self-propulsion by spontaneously breaking the symmetry of the solute distribution. Here we show theoretically that, in a mechanism analogous to B\'enard-Marangoni convection, phoretic phenomena can create spontaneous and self-sustained wall-driven mixing flows within a straight, chemically-uniform active channel. Such spontaneous flows do not result in any net pumping for a uniform channel but greatly modify the distribution of transport of the chemical solute. The instability is predicted to occur for a solute P\'eclet number above a critical value and for a band of finite perturbation wavenumbers. We solve the perturbation problem analytically to characterize the instability, and use both steady and unsteady numerical computations of the full nonlinear transport problem to capture the long-time coupled dynamics of the solute and flow within the channel., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Soft Matter

Active droplets swim as a result of the nonlinear advective coupling of the distribution of chemical species they consume or release with the Marangoni flows created by their non-uniform surface distribution. Most existing models focus on the self-propulsion of a single droplet in an unbounded fluid, which arises when diffusion is slow enough (i.e. beyond a critical P\'eclet number, $\mbox{Pe}_c$). Despite its experimental relevance, the coupled dynamics of multiple droplets and/or collision with a wall remains mostly unexplored. Using a novel approach based on a moving fitted bispherical grid, the fully-coupled nonlinear dynamics of the chemical solute and flow fields are solved here to characterise in detail the axisymmetric collision of an active droplet with a rigid wall (or with a second droplet). The dynamics is strikingly different depending on the convective-to-diffusive transport ratio, $\mbox{Pe}$: near the self-propulsion threshold (moderate $\mbox{Pe}$), the rebound dynamics are set by chemical interactions and are well captured by asymptotic analysis; in contrast, for larger $\mbox{Pe}$, a complex and nonlinear combination of hydrodynamic and chemical effects set the detailed dynamics, including a closer approach to the wall and a velocity plateau shortly after the rebound of the droplet. Cyberphysical Systems (CPS) are transforming the way we interact with the physical world around us. However, centralised approaches for CPS systems are not capable of addressing the unique challenges of CPS due to the complexity, constraints, and dynamic nature of the interactions. To realize the true potential of CPS, a decentralized approach that takes into account these unique features is required. Recently, blockchain-based solutions have been proposed to address CPS challenges.Yet, applying blockchain for diverse CPS domains is not straight-forward and has its own challenges. Phoretic particles exploit local self-generated physico-chemical gradients to achieve self-propulsion at the micron scale. The collective dynamics of a large number of such particles is currently the focus of intense research efforts, both from a physical perspective to understand the precise mechanisms of the interactions and their respective roles, as well as from an experimental point of view to explain the observations of complex dynamics as well as formation of coherent large-scale structures. However, an exact modelling of such multi-particle problems is difficult and most efforts so far rely on the superposition of far-field approximations for each particle's signature, which are only valid asymptotically in the dilute suspension limit. A systematic and unified analytical framework based on the classical Method of Reflections (MoR) is developed here for both Laplace and Stokes' problems to obtain the higher-order interactions and the resulting velocities of multiple phoretic particles, up to any order of accuracy in the radius-to-distance ratio $\varepsilon$ of the particles. Beyond simple pairwise chemical or hydrodynamic interactions, this model allows us to account for the generic chemo-hydrodynamic couplings as well as $N$-particle interactions ($N\geq 3$). The $\varepsilon^5$-accurate interaction velocities are then explicitly obtained and the resulting implementation of this MoR model is discussed and validated quantitatively against exact solutions of a few canonical problems., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures, to appear in Physical Review Fluids

In experiments, an individual chemically active liquid crystal (LC) droplet submerged in the bulk of a surfactant solution may self-propel along a straight, helical, or random trajectory. In this paper, we develop a minimal model capturing all three types of self-propulsion trajectories of a drop in the case of a nematic LC with homeotropic anchoring at LC-fluid interface. We emulate the director field within the drop by a single preferred polarization vector that is subject of two reorientation mechanisms, namely, the internal flow-induced displacement of the hedgehog defect and the droplet's rotation. Within this reduced-order model, the coupling between the nematic ordering of the drop and the surfactant transport is represented by variations of the droplet's interfacial properties with nematic polarization. Our analysis reveals that a novel mode of orientational instability emerges from the competition of the two reorientation mechanisms and is characterized by a spontaneous rotation of the self-propelling drop responsible for helical self-propulsion trajectories. In turn, we also show that random trajectories in isotropic and nematic drops alike stem from the advection-driven transition to chaos. Unlike pressure-driven flows, surface-mediated phoretic flows provide efficient means to drive fluid motion on very small scales. Colloidal particles covered with chemically-active patches with nonzero phoretic mobility (e.g. Janus particles) swim using self-generated gradients, and similar physics can be exploited to create phoretic pumps. Here we analyse in detail the design principles of phoretic pumps and show that for a minimal phoretic pump, consisting of 3 distinct chemical patches, the optimal arrangement of the patches maximizing the flow rate is universal and independent of chemistry., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Scientific Reports

We present here first-of-a-kind experimental measurements of the flow field around a swimming water droplet, using confocal PIV in three dimensions. The droplet is denser than the continuous oil phase, and swims close and parallel to the bottom wall. The measured flow field is first quantitatively characterized and compared to the flow field obtained for an axisymmetric swimmer in unbounded flow. Important qualitative differences are observed, in particular the emergence of a strong isotropic radial flow field in the planes parallel to the wall. These fundamental differences stress the critical impact of confinement on the flow field around the swimming droplet. We then propose an analytical formulation, based on a reduced order description of the swimming droplet in terms of fundamental hydrodynamic singularities as well as the classical method of images. This model is able to account exactly for the effect of the wall and provides a simplified description of the flow field as the superposition of axisymmetric dipole and quadrupole singularities. We demonstrate that this simplified description quantitatively captures the effect of the wall on the dipolar and quadrupolar components of the flow field. Further including the confinement-induced asymmetry of the concentration field responsible for the droplet's Marangoni propulsion, our model is also able to account for the monopolar contribution to the experimental flow field which drives the dominant far-field signature of the droplet., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 3 appendices

We investigate the flow around an oscillating nearly-spherical particle at low, yet non-vanishing, Reynolds numbers, and the potential resulting locomotion. We analytically demonstrate that no net motion can arise up to order one in Re and order one in the asphericity parameter, regardless of the particle's shape. Individual chemically active drops suspended in a surfactant solution were observed to self-propel spontaneously with straight, helical, or chaotic trajectories. To elucidate how these drops can exhibit such strikingly different dynamics and `decide' what to do, we propose a minimal axisymmetric model of a spherical active drop, and show that simple and linear interface properties can lead to both steady self-propulsion of the droplet as well as chaotic behavior. The model includes two different mobility mechanisms, namely, diffusiophoresis and the Marangoni effect, that convert self-generated gradients of surfactant concentration into the flow at the droplet surface. In turn, surface-driven flow initiates surfactant advection that is the only nonlinear mechanism and, thus, the only source of dynamical complexity in our model. Numerical investigation of the fully-coupled hydrodynamic and advection diffusion problems reveals that strong advection (e.g., large droplet size) may destabilize a steadily self-propelling drop; once destabilized, the droplet spontaneously stops and a symmetric extensile flow emerges. If advection is strengthened even further in comparison with molecular diffusion, the droplet may perform chaotic oscillations. Our results indicate that the thresholds of these instabilities depend heavily on the balance between diffusiophoresis and the Marangoni effect. Using linear stability analysis, we demonstrate that diffusiophoresis promotes the onset of high-order modes of monotonic instability of the motionless drop. Phoretic particles self-propel using self-generated physico-chemical gradients at their surface. Within a suspension, they interact hydrodynamically by setting the fluid around them into motion, and chemically by modifying the chemical background seen by their neighbours. While most phoretic systems evolve in confined environments due to buoyancy effects, most models focus on their interactions in unbounded flows. Here, we propose a first model for the interaction of phoretic particles in Hele-Shaw confinement and show that in this limit, hydrodynamic and phoretic interactions share not only the same scaling but also the same form, albeit in opposite directions. In essence, we show that phoretic interactions effectively reverse the sign of the interactions that would be obtained for swimmers interacting purely hydrodynamically. Yet, hydrodynamic interactions can not be neglected as they significantly impact the magnitude of the interactions. This model is then used to analyse the behaviour of a suspension. The suspension exhibits swirling and clustering collective modes dictated by the orientational interactions between particles, similar to hydrodynamic swimmers, but here governed by the surface properties of the phoretic particle; the reversal in the sign of the interaction tends to slow down the swimming motion of the particles., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, to appear in J. Motivated by the dynamics of microbubbles near catalytic surfaces in bubble-powered microrockets, we consider theoretically the growth of a free spherical bubble near a flat no-slip surface in a Stokes flow. The flow at the bubble surface is characterised by a constant slip length allowing to tune the hydrodynamic mobility of its surface and tackle in one formulation both clean and contaminated bubbles as well as rigid shells. Starting with a bubble of infinitesimal size, the fluid flow and hydrodynamic forces on the growing bubble are obtained analytically. We demonstrate that, depending on the value of the bubble slip length relative to the initial distance to the wall, the bubble will either monotonically drain the fluid separating it from the wall, which will exponentially thin, or it will bounce off the surface once before eventually draining the thin film. Clean bubbles are shown to be a singular limit who always monotonically get repelled from the surface. The bouncing events for bubbles with finite slip lengths are further analysed in detail in the lubrication limit. In particular, we identify the origin of the reversal of the hydrodynamic force direction as due to the change in the flow pattern in the film between the bubble and the surface and to the associated lubrication pressure. Experimental observations indicate that chemically active droplets suspended in a surfactant-laden fluid can self-propel spontaneously. The onset of this motion is attributed to a symmetry-breaking Marangoni instability resulting from the nonlinear advective coupling of the distribution of surfactant to the hydrodynamic flow generated by Marangoni stresses at the droplet's surface. Here, we use weakly nonlinear analysis to characterize the self-propulsion near the instability threshold and the influence of the droplet's deformability. We report that in vicinity of the threshold, deformability enhances self-propulsion of viscous droplets, but hinders propulsion of drops that are roughly less viscous than the surrounding fluid. Our asymptotics further reveals that droplet deformability may alter the type of bifurcation leading to symmetry breaking: for moderately deformable droplets the onset of self-propulsion is transcritical and a regime of steady self-propulsion is stable; while in the case of highly deformable drops, no steady flows can be found within the asymptotic limit considered in this paper suggesting that the bifurcation is subcritical., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Fluid Mechanics

There is increased interest in smart vehicles acting as both data consumers and producers in smart cities. Vehicles can use smart city data for decision-making, such as dynamic routing based on traffic conditions. Moreover, the multitude of embedded sensors in vehicles can collectively produce a rich data set of the urban landscape that can be used to provide a range of services. Key to the success of this vision is a scalable and private architecture for trusted data sharing. This paper proposes a framework called SpeedyChain, that leverages blockchain technology to allow smart vehicles to share their data while maintaining privacy, integrity, resilience and non-repudiation in a decentralized, and tamper-resistant manner. Differently from traditional blockchain usage (e.g., Bitcoin and Ethereum), the proposed framework uses a blockchain design that decouples the data stored in the transactions from the block header, thus allowing for fast addition of data to the blocks. Furthermore, an expiration time for each block to avoid large sized blocks is proposed.
