Abstract The Mediterranean‐type climate region of Chile is a globally unique biodiversity hotspot but its protected area system does not adequately represent the biological diversity, nor does it provide equitable access to people. We explored options to expand the protected area system to cost‐effectively improve the conservation of forest ecosystem types while simultaneously enhancing social accessibility to protected areas. Social accessibility is defined as the access of municipalities to cultural ecosystem services provided by protected areas which depends on distance to highly demanded protected areas and income of the municipalities. Using systematic conservation planning methods, we identified priority areas for extending the existing protected area system that: (a) minimise land acquisition cost, (b) maximise social accessibility and (c) optimise for both cost and accessibility. The results show that it is possible to improve social accessibility while simultaneously minimising land cost. Considering cost alone, the protected area system could be expanded to improve biodiversity conservation by 86% at the cost of $47 million USD, which would also increase the accessibility of protected areas by 12%. Accessibility can be increased by a further 18% by jointly considering cost and accessibility without compromising the cost or biodiversity performance. New private conservation policy developed in Chile could help offset the costs of conservation through novel public–private partnerships. Our results can provide specific guidance to policymakers to strategically identify new locations for protected areas which cost‐effectively improve biodiversity conservation, while at the same time reducing inequality in social accessibility. The consideration of social access in reserve design could increase the success of protected areas as a conservation tool by bringing people closer to nature. Abstract Tidal marshes are threatened coastal ecosystems known for their capacity to store large amounts of carbon in their water-logged soils. Accurate quantification and mapping of global tidal marshes soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is of considerable value to conservation efforts. Here, we used training data from 3710 unique locations, landscape-level environmental drivers and a global tidal marsh extent map to produce a global, spatially explicit map of SOC storage in tidal marshes at 30 m resolution. Here we show the total global SOC stock to 1 m to be 1.44 Pg C, with a third of this value stored in the United States of America. On average, SOC in tidal marshes’ 0–30 and 30–100 cm soil layers are estimated at 83.1 Mg C ha−1 (average predicted error 44.8 Mg C ha−1) and 185.3 Mg C ha−1 (average predicted error 105.7 Mg C ha−1), respectively.

Spatial quantification of blue carbon ecosystem stocks is crucial for developing policies to mitigate climate change, especially in regions experiencing ongoing wetland disturbance from biological invasions. We integrated multiple machine learning models with the space-for-time substitution method to quantify the spatiotemporal impact of Spartina alterniflora invasion on tidal marsh sediment blue carbon (soil organic carbon – 'SOC') stocks at 100 cm depth in the Yangtze Estuary. Our results show that the invasive S. alterniflora contributed more than half of the total SOC stocks (2,056 ± 379 Gg C, 1 Gg = 106 kg) in the 27,600 ha tidal marshes of the Yangtze Estuary, which were estimated to be 1,107 ± 176 Gg C. S. alterniflora increased the SOC stocks in the Yangtze Estuary within the first 15 years, but this gain was not sustained in the long term, with a gradual decline (by 13.14 Mg C/ha) observed after 15 years of S. alterniflora growth. We found that sediment salinity, tidal range, and human accessibility were strong indicators for modeling and predicting SOC stocks, with Random Forest providing the best simulation of tidal marsh SOC stocks (R2 = 0.894, RMSE=7.646 Mg C/ha, and MAPE=9.469 %). Our study provides much needed information on blue carbon stocks in the Yangtze Estuary under biological invasion stress, and offers guidance for targeted S. alterniflora management actions in the future.

Introdução: O presente trabalho parte da publicação “Educação alimentar e nutricional no contexto da promoção de práticas alimentares saudáveis”, cujo objetivo foi “fazer uma reflexão sobre a educação alimentar e nutricional no contexto da promoção das práticas alimentares saudáveis, apontada como importante estratégia para enfrentar os novos desafios no campo da saúde, alimentação e nutrição". Objetivo: Revisitar a reflexão empreendida na publicação supracitada, ampliando o escopo de análise para o período recente 2000-2023, diante de novos cenários e atuações no campo das políticas de alimentação e nutrição. Métodos: Trata-se de um ensaio que utilizou como percurso metodológico a análise de documentos publicados ou atualizados a partir dos anos 2000, referente às políticas de saúde, alimentação e nutrição e Soberania e Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional. Resultados: Desta análise, podem-se depreender deslocamentos no foco de EAN, alimentados pelas noções de SAN e DHAA que abasteceram as políticas públicas do campo. Destacou-se a conformação do conceito de AAS, fruto da convergência de perspectivas que ampliaram a compreensão da alimentação enquanto direito humano. Ressalta-se a elaboração do Marco de EAN para PP, como desdobramento das políticas e promotora do descentramento do paradigma que pavimentou historicamente as ações de EAN no contexto brasileiro. Conclusão: Todo esse cenário nos orienta a assumir que o direito é o substantivo a acompanhar a alimentação no binômio de EAN nesse período. Constata-se que o entendimento da EAN, a partir das interpretações dos distintos momentos da sua história, caracterizados pelos binômios alimentação-educação, educação-renda, alimentação-informação e alimentação-direito humano, não são lineares e se sobrepõem.

Este ensaio problematiza as relações entre os direitos à educação e à alimentação na escola, considerando dimensões associadas ao cultivo de uma cultura escolar que possa assumir a alimentação como fonte de inspiração para formação humanística, crítica e cidadã dos escolares. Portanto, percorre a trajetória da conformação da alimentação escolar, enquanto objeto de estudo e pesquisas, extensão e de espaço formativo, desvelando as contradições na instituição da alimentação como direito humano no cotidiano escolar frente a persistência da percepção assistencialista. Posteriormente, problematiza a potência educativa do comer na escola e os desafios de sua conjunção com o direito à escola, partindo, de um lado, do pressuposto da indivisibilidade dos direitos humanos e, de outro, das possibilidades de sua materialização em convergência com a humanização dos saberes sobre alimentação e das práticas do comer na escola na direção da garantia da dignidade humana e da promoção da justiça social e escolar.
