Abstract

Non-yrast, excited states in neutron-rich $^{186}$W were populated via inelastic-scattering reactions using beams of $^{136}$Xe nuclei accelerated to 725 and 800 MeV. Levels populated in the reactions were investigated via particle-$ \gamma $ coincidence techniques using the Gammasphere array of High-Purity Germanium detectors and the compact heavy-ion counter, CHICO2. The $ K^{\pi} = 2 ^{+} $ ($\gamma$), $ K^{\pi} = 0^{+}$ and $ K^{\pi} = 2^{-} $ (octupole) rotational side bands were extended to spins $ 14\hbar $, $ 12\hbar $, and $ 13\hbar $, respectively. A staggering pattern observed in the energies of levels in the $ K^{\pi} = 2^{+} $ band was found to be consistent with a potential that gets softer to vibration in the $ \gamma $ degree of freedom with increasing spin. The odd-even staggering of states in the $ K^{\pi} = 2^{-}$ band was found to exhibit a phase opposite to that seen in the $ \gamma $ band; an effect most probably associated with Coriolis coupling to other, unobserved octupole vibrational bands in $^{186}$W., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The study of the electromagnetic moments (EM), and decay probability, provides detailed information about nuclear wave functions. The well-know properties of EM interactions are good for extracting information about the motion of nucleons. Higher order EM processes always occur, but are usually too weak to be measured. In the case of a 0+ → 0+ transitions [1, 2], where a single gamma transition is forbidden, the simultaneous emission of two γ-rays has been studied. An interesting opportunity to further investigate 2-photon emission phenomena is by using a standard 137Cs source populating, via β-decay, the Jπ = 11/2− isomeric state at 662 keV in 137Ba. In this case, two photon process can have contributions from quadrupole-quadrupole or dipole-octupole multipolarities in direct competition with the high multipolarity M4 decay. Since the yield of the double gamma decay is around six orders of magnitude less than the first order transition, very good statistics are needed in order to observe the phenomena and great care must be taken to suppress the first-order decay. The Gammasphere array is ideal since its configuration allows a good coverage of the angular distribution and the Compton events can be suppressed. Nevertheless the process to understand and eliminate the Compton background is a challenge. Geant4 simulations were carried out to help understand and correct for those factors.

Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), under construction at Darmstadt will provide intense relativistic beams of exotic nuclei at its Superconducting-FRagment Separator. High-resolution in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy will be performed in the HISPEC experiment, using the European Advanced GAmma-ray Tracking Array (AGATA). The PreSPEC-AGATA campaign is the predecessor of HISPEC and runs from 2012 to 2014 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH. Up to19 AGATA modules were used at GSI's F Ragment Separator in 2012. We report on the status of the experiment including preliminary results from performance commissioning.
