The ladybird Eriopis connexa is an important natural enemy of several pest arthropods in agroecosystems. High population of this predator is frequently observed in strawberry and soybean crops associated with spider mites. We used two-sex life table parameters to evaluate under laboratory conditions, the suitability of three species of spider mites (Tetranychus evansi, Tetranychus urticae, Tetranychus ogmophallos), and a species of aphid (Myzus persicae) as a prey for the predator E. connexa. Eriopis connexa completed immature development on all prey species except on T. evansi, in which all individuals of predator died before reaching the pupal stage. Among prey species that allowed the immature development of E. connexa, T. urticae and M. persicae provided a faster development time to the predator. Oviposition days, longevity and fecundity of E. connexa on T. urticae and M. persicae were substantially longer/higher than on T. ogmophallos. Net reproductive rate (R 0 ), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) of E. connexa feeding on T. urticae and M. persicae were also higher than those on T. ogmophallos. Background: Brevipalpus yothersi Baker is one of the main vectors of citrus leprosis. Knowing the biology of this mite species when under chemical control is extremely important to understand its population dynamics, and then to solve problems of management of this pest. Therefore, we assessed the effects of one sublethal dose of spirodiclofen (0.48 ppm) on biological and demographic parameters of B. yothersi under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, comparing them with non-exposed mite population., Results: Under laboratory conditions, where citrus fruits were used as a substrate, the duration of developmental stages (pre-egg-laying and egg-laying) and mite longevity showed no differences between treatments. However, the number of laid eggs increased in acaricide-treated fruits. In the greenhouse experiment, where citrus plants were used as a substrate, the instantaneous growth rate (ri) of mites was positive in all untreated plots. In contrast, in treated plants, ri was negative in 12 experimental units, and mite populations were suppressed in five of them. Moreover, mite population dynamics had a positive ri in three treated plants., Conclusions: Spirodiclofen sublethal dose had no negative effect on the offspring of B. yothersi females. However, it is not safe for citrus leprosis mite since it may increase egg number per female in some conditions. The peanut red spider mite, Tetranychus ogmophallos Ferreira and Flechtmann (Acari: Tetranychidae), is an important pest of peanut in Brazil and is considered a quarantine pest in other countries. This study investigates the development, reproduction, survival and life table parameters of T. ogmophallos on five peanut cultivars-three with high levels of oleic acid [high oleic] and recently released: Granoleico, IAC OL 3 and IAC 503; and two regular and previously used by farmers: Runner IAC 886, IAC Tatu ST 3-and two breeding lines (L. 8008 and L. 322) in the growth chamber. There were differences between the developmental times of all immature stages, the oviposition period, fecundity and adult longevity of T. ogmophallos reared on the peanut cultivars and breeding lines. The longest duration of the immature stage and lowest fecundity occurred on cultivars Granoleico and Runner IAC 886, and breeding line L. 322, which also displayed the lowest intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ) and net reproductive rate (R 0 ) and the shortest mean generation time (T). The highest fitness occurred on the IAC Tatu ST, IAC OL 3, IAC 503 and L. 8008. Our study shows that peanut cultivars belonging to the group with high oleic trait and recently released (IAC OL 3 and IAC 503) are susceptible to T. ogmophallos, except Granoleico, which is resistant. The regular and previously used cultivar Runner IAC 886 and breeding line L. 322 are resistant to the peanut red spider mite.

The tomato red spider mite, Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard, is one of the main pests of the tomato crop in several countries, mainly in Africa, where it can reduce tomato yield by up to 90%. The biotic potential of this mite is high and its control is difficult because of low efficiency of chemicals used and the rapid development of resistance to acaricides. We used the two-sex life table to evaluate the effect of two wild tomato genotypes (PI134417 and PI134418) and five tomato varieties widely grown in Benin (Kekefo, Akikon, TLCV15, Tounvi, and TOML4) on demographic characteristics of T. evansi under laboratory conditions. Tetranychus evansi did not develop on the genotypes PI134417 and PI134418, indicating their resistance to this mite. Developmental time of immature stages and female longevity were significantly higher on TLCV15 and Kekefo. Fecundity, net reproductive rate (R 0 ), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) of T. evansi on the African varieties were not statistically different among varieties. Generation time (T) was shorter on TOML4 than on TLCV15 and Tounvi. Thus, efforts should be made to prospect varieties with resistance characteristics or to develop other control means, to reduce the use of pesticides to control T. evansi in Africa.

Pesticides are the main tactics for pest control because they reduce the pest population very fast and their efficiency does not depend on abiotic factors. However, the indiscriminate use of these substances can speed up the development of resistant populations and causing environmental contamination. Therefore, alternative methods of pest control are sought, such as the use of botanical compounds. Nanoencapsulation of volatile compounds has been shown to be an important tool that can be used to overcome the lack of stability of these compounds. In this work, we describe the preparation and characterization of chitosan nanoparticles functionalized with β-cyclodextrin containing carvacrol and linalool. The toxicity and biological activity were evaluated. Decreases of toxicity were observed when the compounds were nanoencapsulated. The nanoparticles presented insecticidal activity against the species Helicoverpa armigera (corn earworm) and Tetranychus urticae (spider mite). In addition, repellent activity and reduction in oviposition were observed for the mites.

Brevipalpus yothersi Baker (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) was recently confirmed as one of the main vectors of citrus leprosis. Knowledge about this mite's biology is essential to understand its population dynamics, in order to solve management issues in citrus orchards and explain why citrus leprosis is more severe in some regions. This paper aimed to study biological factors affecting prevailing population levels of B. yothersi and incidence of citrus leprosis. Mites were sampled from orchards in the south, north and northwestern regions of São Paulo State, Brazil. We assessed duration of the developmental stages, oviposition, incubation period, egg viability, longevity, net reproductive rate (R o ), mean generation time (T), intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) and finite rate of increase (λ). There were small differences in parameter values between the three populations. Our results indicated that the various measures adopted in the control of the three populations did not lead to major biological differences between populations for the evaluated parameters.

Carvacrol and linalool are natural compounds extracted from plants and are known for their insecticidal and repellent activities, respectively. However, their low aqueous solubility, high photosensitivity, and high volatility restrict their application in the control of agricultural pests. The encapsulation of volatile compounds can be an effective way of overcoming such problems. Inclusion complexes between beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and carvacrol (CVC) or linalool (LNL) were investigated. Inclusion complexes were prepared by the kneading method. Both complexes presented 1:1 host:guest stoichiometry and the highest affinity constants were observed at 20 °C for both molecules. The nanoparticles containing carvacrol and linalool had mean diameters of 175.2 and 245.8 nm, respectively and high encapsulation efficiencies (<90%) were achieved for both compounds. Biological assays with mites (Tetranychus urticae) showed that the nanoparticles possessed repellency, acaricidal, and oviposition activities against this organism. Nanoencapsulated carvacrol and linalool were significantly more effective in terms of acaricidal and oviposition activities, while the unencapsulated compounds showed better repellency activity. The nanoformulations prepared in this study are good candidates for the sustainable and effective use of botanical compounds in agriculture, contributing to the reduction of environmental contamination, as well as promoting the effective control of pests in agriculture.
