30. Prediction of moisture transfer parameters for microwave drying of lactose powder using Bi–G drying correlation

Abstract

The mass transport properties characterising the drying of lactose powder were determined using a correlation proposed by Dincer and Hussain [Dincer, I. & Hussain, M. M. (2004). Development of a new Bi–Di correlation for solids drying. International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 47, 653–658]. Experimental moisture content data for lactose samples dried under convective, microwave, combined convective-microwave and combined vacuum-microwave conditions were collected. The drying coefficients and lag factors were calculated from the experimental data and incorporated into the model. The Bi numbers were in the range 0.185–439, and moisture diffusivities and diffusion coefficients in the range from 0.135×10−9 to 102×10−9 and from 0.194×10−6 to 118×10−6 m/s, respectively. The predicted moisture profiles showed adequate agreement with the experimental observations, with the average error between experimental and predicted results being ±13.7%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

31. Effect of shear and washing on metal retention in ferric flocs

Abstract

Flocculative wastewater residues present a serious threat to the environment and a costly disposal problem to industry. The composition of the sludges makes them a particularly intractable problem due to the need for either recovery or permanent isolation of the bound contaminant. The primary interest of this work was to determine the effect of conditioning processes such as shear and washing on the retention of heavy metal contaminants (nickel, cadmium, copper, zinc) within ferric flocs. Shear was found to produce an increase in the leach-out of certain heavy metals, including cadmium and nickel. Copper and nickel were unaffected by the application of shear. The extent of contaminant leaching, due to shear, increased with increasing contaminant to floc ratio. Repeated washing of the floc readily removed sodium ions, however, contaminant metal ions reformed an equilibrium with the washwater and the floc with every washing.© 2002 Society of Chemical Industry
