A report on diversity and inclusion within the fire department, creating opporunities for indigenous recruitment.

Occupational injury is a significant concern facing the Canadian workforce resulting in lost work time and income, medical expenses, compensation costs, and long-term health problems or disability. Previous research has shown health risks associated with employment as a firefighter, and exposure to a variety of injury-related hazards in the course of their occupation. Extreme temperatures, toxic substances, strenuous physical labour, violence and other traumatic events are potential risks that firefighters may experience when responding to emergencysituations. The purpose of this report is to describe injury, disease and death among Canadian firefighters. The report aims to help the reader to understand the causes of injury, disease and death among Canadian firefighters through an extensive review of previous research, as well as a detailed analysis of injury claims data. Claims data from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC) and WorkSafeBC for the years 2006 to 2015 for professional and volunteer firefighters are presented to define priority issues for targeted health promotion and injury prevention interventions.

EnglishThis article examines the relevance of the spatial assimilation model inunderstanding residential segregation of ethnic groups in the three largestgateway cities of Canada. Using data from the census of 2001 it finds that whilethe model may have worked for the European groups they are less applicable tothe visible minorities such as the Chinese, South Asians and Blacks. Residentialsegregation reduces with generation for the European groups but not for thevisible minorities. Canadian patterns seem to be different from that seen in theUnited States. Many visible minority groups maintain their concentration levelseven in the suburbs. The findings seem to indicate that cultural preferences maybe just as important as social class in the residential choices of visible minoritygroups.FrenchCet article examine la pertinence du modèle d’assimilation spatiale dans lacompréhension de la ségrégation résidentielle des groupes ethniques dans lestrois villes « portes d’entrée les plus importantes du Canada. Co-hosted by Indian and Northern Affairs and the University of Western Ontario, the conference promoted interaction between researchers, policy-makers, and Aboriginal peoples. It expanded on the knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic determinants of Aboriginal well-being, and it sought to identify and facilitate the means by which this knowledge may be translated into effective policies. The texts are divided into complementary themes. The chapters in Volume 2 address the themes of economic development; health; gender issues; and crime, victimization, and healing.

EnglishOverall, Canada has one of the world's highest national life expectancies.This benefit is not shared by Canada's aboriginal population, however, which has a life expectancyapproximately seven years less than the general population. The Aboriginal population also differs inthat it has a higher fertility rate and higher mortality rates among infants and young adults. One ofthe consequences of the mortality differential is that the number of person years of lost life (PYLL)expectancy is large for the Aboriginal community in comparison to the general population. Whileseveral studies have focused on the causes of differential mortality, this study examines some of thesocioeconomic consequences of differences in PYLL. Examining wage labor income, for example, wedetermine that the PYLL differential translates into an expected wage and salary loss of approximately$1.56 billion.FrenchDans l’ensemble, l’espérance de vie au Canada est une des plus longues aumonde. Cependant, la population autochtone du Canada ne partage pas cetavantage, son espérance de vie étant d’environ sept ans inférieure à celle de lapopulation générale.
