5. Bone degradation at five Arctic archaeological sites: Quantifying the importance of burial environment and bone characteristics

Abstract

The degradation of archaeological bones is influenced by many variables. The bone material itself is a composite of both organic and inorganic components, and their degradation depends on processes occurring both before and after burial, and on both intrinsic bone characteristics as well as extrinsic environmental parameters. In this study we attempt to quantify the effect of some of the variables using a novel approach that includes detailed monitoring of the burial environment combined with respirometry studies of bone material from five archaeological sites in West Greenland. First, we compare the state of preservation of excavated bone material with the current burial environment including the soil pH, thawing degree days, soil porosity and soil moisture. Secondly, we investigate oxic degradation of collected bone samples through respirometry and quantify the effects of temperature and moisture on the oxidation rate of individual bones. Finally, we discuss how the oxidation rate is influenced by intrinsic bone parameters. Some of the main conclusions are: 1) There is a significant correlation between the current burial environment and the current state of preservation of the bones. 2) The oxidation rate measured by respirometry increases on average fourfold as temperature increases by 10 °C, and more than hundred-fold when dry bones are soaked in water. 3) The oxidation rate of different bones varies over two orders of magnitude due to intrinsic variables such as organic content and state of preservation of the bones. 4) The median oxidation rate of wet bone at 15 °C corresponds to a yearly loss of 3.8% of their mean organic content, while the median yearly loss for dry bones at 75% RH is 0.02%. 5) Respirometry is a promising tool for quantitative degradation studies of bone, but more studies are needed in order to obtain a better understanding of the oxidation processes involved.

Abstract

The rate at which endogenous DNA from differently prepared (butchered, boiled and baked) compact pig bones degrades in five different Danish terrestrial and marine environments over 12 months was investigated. Although > 70% of the estimated endogenous mtDNA is lost after just four weeks of exposure, no cytosine deamination of DNA was recognised. A correlation between the presence of oxygen and the amount of preserved DNA was observed. The results provide valuable information on the interaction between the endogenous DNA and the depositional environment in the early stages of bone diagenesis, which can be a support in the interpretation of the initial diagenetic pathways of archaeological bone.

19. On some variational problems in geometry

Abstract

In this thesis we consider several variational problems in geometry that have a connection to the spectrum of the Laplacian acting on functions. In the first part, we study a quantity called the analytic systole, which was defined in recent joint work of the author with Werner Ballmann and Sugata Mondal. The motivation to study the analytic systole is its connection to small eigenvalues on Riemannian surfaces of finite topological type.We prove several qualitative and quantitative bounds for the analytic systole. The next few chapters deal with extremal metrics for Laplace eigenalues. Extremal metrics somewhat resemble the notion of critical points for the non-smooth functionals given by the eigenvalues of the Laplacian up to normalization. We study these functionals either on the space of all metrics with normalized volume or on a fixed conformal class. More precisely, we are interested in questions related to existence and regularity of extremal metrics. Firstly, we give an existence result for maximizers for the first eigenvalue on non-orientable surface relying on two spectral gap assumptions that prevent degenerations of a carefully chosen maximizing sequence in the moduli space. A similar spectral gap assumption occurs in a recent result of Petrides dealing with the orientable case. Slightly more general than actually required, these spectral gap assumptions ask, whether it is possible to strictly increase the first eigenvalue normalized by area by attaching a handle or a cross cap to a given closed Riemannian surface. We establish this under some extra assumptions. Unfortunately, our assumptions are too restrictive to establish the existence of maximizers at this point. However, there are some examples to which our techniques apply. In particular, we obtain the existence of a maximizing metric for the first eigenvalue on the surface of genus three Next, we consider extremal metrics for eigenvalues in a conformal class. Exploiting a connection of extremal metrics and n-harmonic maps we give an existence result for extremal metrics in perturbed conformal classes on products. In a similar way the connection to n-harmonic maps is used to prove a regularity result for extremal metrics. Finally, we exhibit a natural class of metrics with an integral scalar curvature bound in which one can maximize the first eigenvalue. More abstractly, we prove a regularity result for the Yamabe equation under an integral scalar curvature bound, provided the first eigenvalue is sufficiently large. In the last part, motivated by recent results on sharp eigenvalue bounds for the first eigenvalue on closed surfaces, we study the geometry of embedded, minimal surfaces of unbounded genus in ambient three-manifolds. Our main result here states that the systole of such a sequence tends to zero if the ambient manifold has positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract

Climate change may accelerate the degradation of archaeological sites in the Arctic and lead to a loss of important historical information. This study assesses the current preservation conditions and the processes controlling the physical and chemical stability of the Qajaa kitchen midden in western Greenland. Currently, the site is well protected by low ground temperatures, permafrost and a high water/ice content, keeping the deposits anoxic. Based on 5 years of monitoring data, degradation experiments and model simulation, our resultssuggest that the combined effects of permafrost thaw, thermal and hydrological erosion and oxygen exposure may lead to substantial loss of archaeological evidence before the end of the 21st century.

32. The influence of soil moisture, temperature and oxygen on the oxic decay of organic archaeological deposits

Abstract

The sensitivity of organic-rich archaeological layers at Bryggen in Bergen, Norway, to changes in soil temperatures, water contents and oxygen concentrations is investigated. This is done by linking measurements of oxic decay at varying temperatures and water contents with on-site monitoring data using a one-pool decomposition model. The results show that the model can be used to elucidate the current in situ decay and to evaluate where and when the decay takes place. Future investigations need to include long-term incubation experiments and decay studies at zero or very low oxygen contents in order to improve the robustness of predictions.

Besides typical gynaecological tumours colorectal neoplasms, Crohn's disease, dystopic kidneys, mesenteric cysts, tumours of the small bowel, perityphlitic abscesses, retroperitoneal sarcomas, lymphomas of the ileocoecal region and, in aged patients, aneurysmatic lesions of the iliac arteries have to be considered as source of the symptoms. The systematic use of various diagnostic procedures is discussed.
