The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) has an Ocean Decade Implementation Plan (UNESCO-IOC, 2021) that states seven outcomes required for the ocean we want, with the fourth outcome being “A predicted ocean where society understands and can respond to changing ocean conditions.” To facilitate the achievement of this goal, the IOC has endorsed Mercator Ocean International to implement the Decade Collaborative Center (DCC) for OceanPrediction (https://www.mercator-ocean.eu/oceanprediction/, last access: 21 August 2023), which is a cross-cutting structure that will work to develop global-scale collaboration between Decade Actions related to ocean prediction.

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will vastly expand measurements of global rivers, providing critical new data sets for both gaged and ungaged basins. SWOT discharge products (available approximately 1 year after launch) will provide discharge for all river that reaches wider than 100 m. In this paper, we describe how SWOT discharge produced and archived by the US and French space agencies will be computed from measurements of river water surface elevation, width, and slope and ancillary data, along with expected discharge accuracy. We present for the first time a complete estimate of the SWOT discharge uncertainty budget, with separate terms for random (standard error) and systematic (bias) uncertainty components in river discharge time series. We expect that discharge uncertainty will be less than 30% for two-thirds of global reaches and will be dominated by bias. Separate river discharge estimates will combine both SWOT and in situ data; these “gage-constrained” discharge estimates can be expected to have lower systematic uncertainty. Temporal variations in river discharge time series will be dominated by random error and are expected to be estimated within 15% for nearly all reaches, allowing accurate inference of event flow dynamics globally, including in ungaged basins. We believe this level of accuracy lays the groundwork for SWOT to enable breakthroughs in global hydrologic science.

Postoperative pulmonary recovery after lobectomy has showed early benefits for the video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and sparing open techniques over nonsparing techniques. Robotic-assisted procedures offer benefits in term of clinical outcomes, but their advantages on pulmonary recovery and quality of life have not yet been distinctly prospectively studied. Eighty-six patients undergoing lobectomy over a period of 29 months were prospectively studied for their pulmonary function recovery and pain score level during the in-hospital stay and at 1, 2, and 6 months. Quality of life was evaluated at 2 and 6 months. Forty-five patients were operated by posterolateral limited thoracotomy and 41 patients by robotic approach. The postoperative analgesia protocol differed for the two groups, being lighter for the robotic group. The pulmonary tests were not significantly different during the in-hospital stay. At 1 month, the forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced vital capacity, vital capacity, and maximal expiratory pressure were significantly better for the robotic group ( = 0.05, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.02, respectively). There was no significant difference left at 2 and 6 months. Pain intensity was equivalent during the in-hospital stay but was significantly lower for the robotic group at 1 month ( = 0.02). At 2 and 6 months, pain and quality of life were comparable. Robotic technique can offer similar pulmonary and pain recovery during the in-hospital stay with a lighter analgesia protocol. It clearly favors the early term recovery compared with the open limited technique. The objective and subjective functional recovery becomes equivalent at 2 and 6 months.

Le système Saint-Laurent – Grands Lacs forme la plus grande voie navigable intérieure au monde. Il abrite un écosystème unique et représente une source d’eau potable pour près de la moitié des Québécois. Toutefois, l’aménagement et l’utilisation du chenal de navigation, la disparition de grandes superficies de milieux humides sous les remblais et l’empiètement, la contamination des sédiments près des aménagements portuaires et les industries du secteur sont autant de facteurs qui modifient l’hydrodynamique, détériorent la qualité des eaux, restreignent les activités récréatives et affectent les ressources halieutiques de la région. La modélisation numérique s’avère l’outil technologique idéal pour comprendre et analyser les liens entre la physique et le milieu naturel. Complémentée par des mesures de terrain, elle fait le pont entre les différents processus, à diverses échelles spatiales et temporelles. Alors que la portion fluviale du Saint-Laurent (de Cornwall à Trois-Rivières) est bien documentée, tant par des études numériques que par des mesures de terrain, très peu d’études ont été réalisées dans sa portion fluvio-estuarienne (de Trois-Rivières à Québec). Composé d’eau douce, l’estuaire fluvial est soumis à l’influence grandissante d’une marée semi-diurne, responsable de fortes inversions de courant, du mélange des masses d’eau et de la présence de larges estrans. Il se caractérise par une topographie complexe et par une forte hétérogénéité des substrats, auxquels s’ajoutent des débits fluviaux et des conditions météorologiques variables. La présente recherche vise à fournir une description détaillée de l’hydrodynamique de l’estuaire fluvial du Saint-Laurent au moyen de la modélisation numérique et de mesures de terrain, afin d’en améliorer la compréhension physique, d’identifier l’importance respective des facteurs qui en contrôlent la dynamique et d’en prédire l’évolution. Cet objectif est poursuivi suivant trois axes, soit : 1) acquérir des données détaillé

Objectif : Le but de cette étude est d’évaluer l’influence de la position et du type de nébuliseur sur la dose inhalée (DI) dans un modèle pulmonaire pédiatrique en ventilation non invasive (VNI) avec fuite expiratoire. Matériel et méthode : Un respirateur est connecté à un poumon artificiel modifié, simulant une ventilation d’un enfant d’environ 6 kg. Un nébuliseur à tamis vibrant (Aeroneb Pro™) et un nébuliseur pneumatique standard sont placés alternativement à la sortie du respirateur, avant et après la fuite. La dose inhalée de mesna (DImesna) est mesurée en utilisant la méthode résiduelle gravimétrique. Résultats : Les DImesna de l’Aeroneb et du nébuliseur standard placés après la fuite sont respectivement de 11,7 % et 1,7 ± 0,5 % de la dose nominale (p < 0,01). Les DImesna sont inférieures à 1 % pour les deux types de nébuliseurs dans les autres positions. Conclusion : Avec ce modèle pédiatrique, seule l’utilisation de l’Aeroneb placé après la fuite permet d’obtenir une DI significative lors d’une VNI avec fuite.
