9. 'Cost in Transliteration': The Neurocognitive Processing of Romanized Writing

Abstract

Romanized transliteration is widely used in internet communication and global commerce, yet we know little about its behavioural and neural processing. Here, we show that Romanized text imposes a significant neurocognitive load. Readers faced greater difficulty in identifying concrete words written in Romanized transliteration (Romanagari) compared to L1 and L2. Functional neuroimaging revealed that the neural cost of processing transliterations arose from significantly greater recruitment of language (left precentral gyrus, left inferior parietal lobule) and attention networks (left mid-cingulum). Additionally, transliterated text uniquely activated attention and control areas compared to both L1 (cerebellar vermis) and L2 (pre-supplementary motor area/pre-SMA). We attribute the neural effort of reading Romanized transliteration to (i) effortful phonological retrieval from unfamiliar orthographic forms and (ii) conflicting attentional demands imposed by mapping orthographic forms of one language to phonological-semantic representations in another. Finally, significant brain-behaviour correlation suggests that the left mid-cingulum modulates cognitive-linguistic conflict. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)

15. Reduced cortical volume of the default mode network in adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder

Abstract

Background: Widespread structural alterations have been shown to be implicated in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, there have been inconsistent findings in cortical volume (CV) differences. Most structural neuroimaging studies looking at GAD used region-based approach with relatively small sample sizes, let alone be specific to adolescents with GAD. We believe this is the first study to look at CV measures using a network-based approach in a larger sample of adolescents with GAD. The goal of the current study was to focus on three different brain networks (i.e., Limbic, Frontoparietal, and Default Mode Network [DMN]) in adolescents with GAD. Method: The study involved 81 adolescents with GAD and 112 typically developing (TD) comparison individuals matched on age (15.98 and 15.63 respective means), sex (42F/39M and 45F/67M), and IQ (101.90 and 103.94 respective means). Participants underwent structural MRI. Freesurfer was used to estimate CV (both network-specific and region-specific within networks) and region-specific sub-cortical volume measures. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA; with sex, age, IQ, and intracranial volume [ICV] as potential covariates) was used to estimate group differences. Results: We found significantly lower CV for the DMN in adolescents with GAD, compared with TD individuals. Adolescents with GAD also showed significantly lower hemispheric mean CV of the default-mode regions (particularly the prefrontal and temporal regions) and the hippocampus, compared with TD individuals. Conclusion: The current findings suggest structural alterations in adolescents with GAD. These structural alterations will need to be addressed when implementing and developing treatments for patients with GAD.

Abstract

The identification of clinically relevant neuroimaging biomarkers in psychiatry is a research priority. Neuropsychological tasks and functional MRI (fMRI) are used, via FDA-approved assessments, in clinical decision-making in many neurology departments. However, currently, psychiatry lacks neuro-psychological/fMRI biomarkers that could help in diagnosis and treatment planning. In our opinion, this likely reflects task design choices commonly used with psychiatric patients that limit test re-test reliability (TRR). Clinical decision-making can only occur via tests with excellent TRR. Statistical analyses indicate that TRR is particularly compromised if: (1) there are relatively few trials per condition; and (2) contrast-based analyses are adopted. We suggest, on the basis of the simulation work, that machine learning techniques combined with increasing the number of trials (per condition) and limiting the reliance on contrast-based analyses, can increase TRR and thus allow the successful development of cognitive neuroscience-based biomarkers for psychiatry in the near future.

22. Specialization of phonological and semantic reading routes in early childhood

Abstract

Children show dramatic changes in their reading ability as they are taught to read. During the early period of development, they gain phonological (letter to sound mapping) and semantic knowledge (storage and retrieval of word meaning) of language. This study aims to identify the specialization of phonological and semantic reading routes in early childhood using a combination of univariate and multivariate pattern analysis. 19 typically developing children, between the age of five to seven, performed visual word-level, phonological (rhyming), and semantic (related meaning) judgment fMRI tasks. Using multivariate analysis, we provide the first evidence that young children with good reading ability, have already established specialization in left-hemisphere regions for the two reading routes, including the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), superior and mid temporal gyrus (STG/MTG) and fusiform gyrus. Additionally, semantic information retrieval relies on bilateral inferior parietal lobe areas. The results of the multivariate analysis also provide evidence for the specialization of frontal sub-regions, IFG opercularis, for phonological processing. However, our study does not show evidence for temporal specialization for phonological processing and fronto-temporal specialization for semantic processing. Our findings provide evidence for specialization in the brain, supporting the dual-route theory for reading in early childhood for typically developing children, which can be used as a control baseline for comparison of children at-risk for reading difficulties.

Abstract

This paper represents the outcome of a multidisciplinary discussion on what works, what doesn't, and what can be improved, in on-going work on bio-behavioural taxonomies and their biomarkers. The authors of this paper, representing a wide spectrum of bio-behavioural disciplines (clinical, developmental, differential psychology, neurophysiology, endocrinology, psychiatry, neurochemistry, neurosciences), have contributed more extensive opinions to the Theme Issue "Neurobiology of temperament, personality and psychopathology: what's next?". The authors identified ten directions in international and multidisciplinary cooperation, and multiple insights for "what is next" for each of these directions.

Abstract

Resident-to-resident abuse involves aggression and violence that occurs between long-term care (LTC) home residents and can have serious consequences for both aggressors and victims. To date, there has been no attempt to systematically assess the breadth of the problem in Canada. To address this gap, we undertook a scoping review to enhance understanding of resident-to-resident abuse in LTC homes. A redacted Canadian data set on resident-to-resident abuse is also reported on. Nine electronic literature databases were searched; a total of 784 abstracts were identified, but only 32 satisfied the inclusion criteria. The majority of records (75%) were retrospective case studies, qualitative studies, and reviews/commentaries. Of these, only 14 focused exclusively on resident-to-resident abuse. The redacted Canadian data set suggests resident-to-resident abuse makes up approximately one-third of reported abuse cases. Recommendations for future research, clinical practice, and policy are provided to raise awareness of this phenomenon to help decrease its incidence.
