This paper presents a recent study on a Roman period marble sculpture depicting Empress Livia and the portraits of Germanicus and Drusus Minor, found at the praesidium of Asido (Medina Sidonia, Cádiz, Spain). The sculptures retain extensive evidence of their original polychromy. The properties and spatial distribution of these pigment remains were investigated by portable non-invasive and micro-destructive techniques, applying digital microscopy, and UV/VIS/NIR/SWIR spectroscopy, portable XRF and SEM–EDS analysis. The study revealed the presence of Egyptian blue and ochre on Livia’s mantle and charcoal black on Livia’s eyes and hair, remains that were not clearly visible to the naked eye. This is a signifcant approach, used to identify colours on ancient marble sculpture, which transforms our understanding of these unique pieces. Elemental composition analysis by pXRF has confrmed the evidence of pigments, furthermore supported by the Raman results, making it possible to develop and reconstruct the colour palette that originally brought these sculptures to life in vibrant polychrome. The study of adornments found in the necropolis at Valle de las Higueras (Huecas, Toledo) has determined the morphotypology and mineral composition of one quadrangular pendant and 341 stone beads. Most of the beads are short (length ≤ 5 mm), but within this regularity series can be differentiated that might be the result of standardised fabrication processes and different times of acquisition. Portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified the use of phyllosilicates as sepiolite and clinochlore, and above all variscite, a mineral that became especially important for adornments in the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd millennium BC. The inland location of the necropolis, distant from source areas, certifies its remote origin, as far away as northwest Zamora according to the chronological framework. It is still not possible to determine for sure the source of the variscite at Valle de las Higueras. Archaeological and chronological data obtained in tombs in the necropolis, together with other inland sites, contribute to understanding variscite circulation in the Iberian Peninsula in the Chalcolithic. It was restricted to a few individuals, both adults and children, who wore necklaces and bracelets. Distance did not condition the arrival of variscite, but the small amounts suggest it was traded together with other ostentation elements, such as sea shells, cinnabar and amber. The heterogeneous regional panorama displays differences in the demand, use and acquisition of variscite depending on the socioeconomic organisation and connection to exchange networks.

A pished axe donated to the Valencina de la Concepción Museum (Seville, Spain) in November 2010, and that had belonged to Francisco María Tubino y Oliva's (1833-1888) personal clection, is studied. Although the exact provenance of this object is unknown, there are reasons to think that it might have been found on some archaẽogical site of the Seville province. Through the application of two different analytical techniques (XRD, DCμRS), this axe is identified as a jade-jadeite of purity above 95 ml%, which necessarily implies it came from the Alps. In the conclusions a discussion of this artifact is made in terms of long distance contact in Iberian Late Prehistory. En este trabajo se estudia un hacha pulimentada inédita excepcional depositada en el Museo de Valencina de la Concepción (Sevilla) en noviembre de 2010 y que formó parte de la colección personal de Francisco María Tubino y Oliva (1833-1888). Aunque la procedencia exacta de la pieza es desconocida, existen razones para pensar que podría proceder de algún yacimiento arqueológico de la provincia de Sevilla. Mediante la aplicación de dos técnicas analíticas diferentes (XRD, DCμRS), se identifica la pieza como jade-jadeíta de una pureza superior al 95 ml%, lo que implica su procedencia de los Alpes. En este trabajo se realiza un estudio de los distintos materiales empleados en la construcción, tanto originales como añadidos, las distintas intervenciones rea lizadas en el Mihrab de la antigua Mezquita de Almería. El estudio de las mues tras ha permitido determinar la naturaleza de cada una de ellas, así como la exis tencia de gran cantidad de sales (clomros y sulfatos en su mayoría). Asimismo, se ha obtenido información sobre su micromorfología. porosidad, mayor o me nor grado de cristalinidad y estado de alteración. Finalmente se ha comprobado la aplicación, en época reciente, de consolidantes que han sido responsables del desprendimiento superficial.

El objetivo de esta comunicación es dar a conocer el estudio científico que se está realizando sobre el más de medio centenar de los Libros de Coro reali zados en pergamino, expresamente para esta institución, entre los ss. XVII al XX que se encuentran en la Abadía del Sacromonte en Granada. Se efectúa una pe queña introducción histórica de lo que es la Abadía y su localización. A conti nuación .se describen los libros estudiados (tipologías y características generales) y sobre todo de las miniaturas con las que están decorados algunos de ellos.

El Musco de Bellas Artes de Sevilla consen'a una importante colección de obras del pintor Francisco de Zurbarán, cuya personalidad artística dominó en la pintura sevillana del segundo tercio del s. XVII y una de las figuras estelares de la pintura española del Siglo de Oro. En este trabajo se presenta el estudio analítico de muestras procedentes de pinturas mediante microscopía óptica (MO), microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) con análisis de energía dispersiva de rayos X (EDX), difracción de ra yos X (DRX) y espectroscopia de absorción IR (FTIR). Los análisis fueron rea lizados por el Instituto de Ciencias de Materiales de Sevilla dentro de una primera fase de cooperación entre las dos instituciones y los resultados obtenidos han permitido alcanzar algunas conclusiones sobre los materiales y la técnica empleada por el artista que tienen aún el carácter de avance provisional hasta tanto se rea lice el estudio de toda su obra en el museo.
