Abstract

Within the EC funded international project OPTHER (OPtically Driven TeraHertz AmplifiERs) a considerable technological effort is being undertaken, in terms of technological development, THz device design and integration. The ultimate goal is to develop a miniaturised THz amplifier based on vacuum-tube principles The main target specifications of the OPTHER amplifier are the following: - Operating frequency: in the band 0.3 to 2 THz - Output power: > 10 mW (10 dBm) - Gain: 10 to 20 dB. The project is in the middle of its duration. Design and simulations have shown that these targets can be met with a proper device configuration and careful optimization of the different parts of the amplifier. Two parallel schemes will be employed for amplifier realisation: THz Drive Signal Amplifier and Optically Modulated Beam THz Amplifier.

Abstract

The European project OPTHER - Optically Driven THz Amplifiers, is focused on the realization of a THz amplifier. This device aims to overcome the actual limitations of THz sources in terms of emitted power, opening the way to the use of THz in monitoring security systems. Two alternative schemes are under study for amplification. In the first one (THz drive signal amplifier) the continuous wave electron beam emitted by the CNT cathode is modulated by the electric field in the interaction structure driven by a THz signal (generated by QCL or laser mixing). In the second one (optically modulated beam THz amplifier), the CNT cathode emits bunches of electrons at the THz rate. Those bunches are transmitted to the interaction structure and generate the amplified output signal.

Abstract

Summary. Urinary stress incontinence was treated by the Marshall‐Marchetti‐Kranz (MMK) procedure in 42 and by Burch coloposuspension in 44 women. All were assessed preoperatively and for <1 year postoperatively, both clinically and by urodynamic tests. Cure of incontinence was achieved to a similar extent by both procedures, in 71% after the MMK and 79% after the Burch operation. Abstract

The new didactic organization of University degree of health areas considers a final qualifying examination composed, among other exams, by a written dissertation (thesis) dealing with technical-operative-experimental matters. At the faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Padua University, the council of the Degree in Nursing proposed a document about finalities, arguments, methods and operative rules for the production of the thesis as an instrument for students and teachers. During academic year 1996/97, 49 students had been graduated, for the first time in Italy. About 63% of theses were highly congruent with council's methodological instructions. When the matter of the theses was a technical aspect of an assistance problem, the theses were correct from a methodological point of view. Many professional figures supplied support to the students for the thesis, giving them a complete experience of professional application. The dimension of the thesis suggested by the Council's instruction was unrespected, the average length of the theses (30.3 pages) was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than that proposed (20 pages). This suggests that students could have an insufficient synthetic capability.
