Abstract

Proper characterisation of investigated samples is vital when studying superconductivity as impurities and doping inhomogeneities can affect the physical properties of the measured system. We present a method where a polarised neutron imaging setup utilises the precession of spin-polarised neutrons in the presence of a trapped field in the superconducting sample to spatially map out the critical temperature for the phase transition between superconducting and non-superconducting states. We demonstrate this method on a superconducting crystal of the prototypical high-temperature superconductor (La,Sr)$_2$CuO$_4$. The results, which are backed up by complementary magnetic susceptibility measurements, show that the method is able to resolve minor variations in the transition temperature across the length of the LSCO crystal, caused by inhomogeneities in strontium doping., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This work describes the implementation of polarized neutron imaging capabilities at the neutron and x-ray tomograph (NeXT) imaging station of the Institut Laue Langevin. This development enhances the capacity of this instrument to study advanced magnetic materials, which are crucial in a variety of engineering applications. Here, the feasibility of polarized neutron imaging at NeXT is demonstrated by visualizing the magnetic field generated by a simple bar magnet. The use of a double-crystal monochromator for wavelength-resolved imaging is also shown to enable both quantitative and qualitative analyses of magnetic materials. This is demonstrated through the determination of magnetization strength in a sample of electric steel (FeSi) in addition to the distribution of its components. Polarimetric imaging is also implemented for the first time to characterize the magnetic field generated by a current-carrying cylindrical wire. These findings collectively underscore the value of incorporating polarized neutron imaging into the already cutting-edge imaging station. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The focused ion beam (FIB) is a powerful tool for the fabrication, modification and characterization of materials down to the nanoscale. Starting with the gallium FIB, which was originally intended for photomask repair in the semiconductor industry, there are now many different types of FIB that are commercially available. These instruments use a range of ion species and are applied broadly in materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and even archaeology. The goal of this roadmap is to provide an overview of FIB instrumentation, theory, techniques and applications. By viewing FIB developments through the lens of the various research communities, we aim to identify future pathways for ion source and instrumentation development as well as emerging applications, and the scope for improved understanding of the complex interplay of ion-solid interactions. We intend to provide a guide for all scientists in the field that identifies common research interests and will support future fruitful interactions connecting tool development, experiment and theory. While a comprehensive overview of the field is sought, it is not possible to cover all research related to FIB technologies in detail. We give examples of specific projects within the broader context, referencing original works and previous review articles throughout.

Abstract

In recent years, the technology readiness level of next-generation lithium-sulfur (Li/S) batteries has shifted from coin cell to pouch cell dimensions. Promising optimizations of the electrodes, electrolytes, active materials, and additives lead to improved performance and cycling stability. However, new challenges arise with the pouch cell design and engineering (including electrode stacking and electrolyte filling), which influence the mechanistic processes of the cell. This study presents an unprecedented multimodal operando investigation of Li/S batteries on a pouch cell level and provides an inside view of material transformations during battery cycling, using X-ray radiography, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and spatially resolved temperature monitoring. With the comparison of two different electrolytes, new experimental details about sulfur and lithium sulfide deposition and dissolution processes are revealed and related to electrolyte and temperature distribution. Operando impedance measurements on monolayer pouch cells yield a clear correlation of electrochemical and macroscopic radiographic observations. Understanding the monolayer cells’ behavior represents an optimal foundation for further studies on multilayer pouch cell prototypes and demonstrators with the developed operando setup. Herein the proof of principle for correlated measurement methods on pouch cell level is shown, and the experimental proof of concept for sulfur crystal suppression in sparingly solvating electrolyte is visualized.

Abstract

Using phase contracted synchrotron X ray tomography, this study investigates the water distribution within the microporous layer MPL of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells PEMFCs . Synchrotron X ray tomography used to analyze the water distribution in the whole gas diffusion medium GDM , which comprises the microporous layer MPL and the gas diffusion layer GDL . The MPL has already been identified. In the future, the development of GDMs could be employed to enhance the performance and operating conditions of PEMFCs
