1. Transatlantic Air Travel in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy: Does It Affect the Fetus?

Abstract: Most commercial airlines allow pregnant women to fly up to 36 weeks of gestation. Available information suggests that noise, vibration, and cosmic radiation present a small risk for the pregnant air traveler. The goal of the study was to assess the possible effect of transatlantic flights on the condition of the third-trimester fetus. In total, 112 patients were recruited into the study between January 2005 and June 2016. All underwent a transatlantic flight in the third trimester of pregnancy. All underwent nonstress test before and within 12 hours after the transatlantic flight, and 24 hours later. Patients were asked to report changes in fetal movements (FMs), if any, during takeoff, flight itself, and landing. The time of flight varied from 8 to 15 hours; average flight time was 9 ± 3.8 hours. Ninety-eight patients were the passengers of first or business class, and the rest were of economy class. Increased FM during takeoff was reported by 17 patients (15%), no change in FM by 62 (35%), decreased FM by 4 (3.6%). During flight itself, increased FM was reported by 6 pregnant passengers (5.4%), no change in FM by 70 (63%), decreased FM by 8 (7%).

Abstract: Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detectors offer charged particle imaging capability with remarkable spatial resolution. Precise event reconstruction procedures are critical in order to fully exploit the potential of this technology. In this paper we present a new, general approach to 3D reconstruction for the LAr TPC with a practical application to the track reconstruction. The efficiency of the method is evaluated on a sample of simulated tracks. We present also the application of the method to the analysis of stopping particle tracks collected during the ICARUS T600 detector operation with the CNGS neutrino beam.

3. New Indication for an Established Procedure: Cervical Cerclage for Prevention of Umbilical Cord Prolapse

Abstract: Objective: Funic presentation is a risk factor for umbilical cord prolapse. In the majority of cases, umbilical cord prolapse is an obstetric emergency. Currently there is no strategy to prevent umbilical cord prolapse in patients with funic presentation. Placing a third trimester cervical cerclage was proposed, as a mechanical barrier of prolapse, in women with funic presentation. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with funic presentation, detected between 23 and 34 weeks of gestation, were included in the study. Patients were informed that although cervical cerclage have been widely used in obstetrics, it had not been offered in patients with funic presentation. Gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, location of umbilical cord at birth, presence or absence of umbilical cord prolapsed, and neonatal condition at birth were recorded in all cases. Results: Patients’ age varied from 21 to 40 years, mean of 28 ± 6.2 years, and gestational age at the time of diagnosis of funic presentation varied from 26 to 34 weeks of pregnancy. All patients were seen weekly after the cervical cerclage placement to assess the umbilical cord location. Seven patients had vertex presentation, four had breech presentation, and one had transverse lie presentation. A follow-up sonogram of the umbilical cord revealed the following: funic presentation was persistent throughout the entire pregnancy in five patients, disappeared in four, and became intermittent in three. The delivery mode was as follows: cesarean section was performed in eight patients (five with persistent funic presentation, two with intermittent, and one with resolved funic presentation because of failure to progress in labor). There were five patients who delivered vaginally. Funic presentation was confirmed in all patients who underwent cesarean sections. None of the patients had had an umbilical cord prolapse. Conclusion: In view of high perinatal mortality of umbilical cord prolapses, placement of cervical cerclage could be added to obstetric armamentarium in patients with funic presentation, after proper counseling.

Abstract: The OPERA collaboration has claimed evidence of superluminal {\nu}{_\mu} propagation between CERN and the LNGS. Cohen and Glashow argued that such neutrinos should lose energy by producing photons and e+e- pairs, through Z0 mediated processes analogous to Cherenkov radiation. In terms of the parameter delta=(v^2_nu-v^2_c)/v^2_c, the OPERA result implies delta = 5 x 10^-5. For this value of \delta a very significant deformation of the neutrino energy spectrum and an abundant production of photons and e+e- pairs should be observed at LNGS. We present an analysis based on the 2010 and part of the 2011 data sets from the ICARUS experiment, located at Gran Sasso National Laboratory and using the same neutrino beam from CERN. We find that the rates and deposited energy distributions of neutrino events in ICARUS agree with the expectations for an unperturbed spectrum of the CERN neutrino beam. Our results therefore refute a superluminal interpretation of the OPERA result according to the Cohen and Glashow prediction for a weak current analog to Cherenkov radiation. In particular no superluminal Cherenkov like e+e- pair or gamma emission event has been directly observed inside the fiducial volume of the "bubble chamber like" ICARUS TPC-LAr detector, setting the much stricter limit of delta < 2.5 10^-8 at the 90% confidence level, comparable with the one due to the observations from the SN1987A., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The ICARUS T600 detector, with its 470 tons of active mass, is the largest liquid Argon TPC ever built. Operated for three years in the LNGS underground laboratory, it has collected thousands of CNGS neutrino beam interactions and cosmic ray events with energy spanning from tens of MeV to tens of GeV, with a trigger system based on scintillation light, charge signal on TPC wires and time information (for beam related events only). The performance of trigger system in terms of efficiency, background and live-time as a function of the event energy for the CNGS data taking is presented., 23 pages, 23 figures. 7. Long term activation in a 15 MeV radiotherapy accelerator

Abstract: The high energy electrons produced by linear accelerators can generate several radioisotopes by means of photonuclear reactions. The activity produced in the head of a 15 MV Mevatron Siemens 77 medical linear accelerator was measured by high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, during its decommissioning 1 year after the last clinical use. The activity of 54Mn, 57Co, 60Co, 181W, and 65Zn was measured while the activity of other radioisotopes which emit soft beta or gamma rays such as 59Ni, 63Ni, and 55Fe was inferred by appropriate scaling factors. The number of pieces requiring particular care is limited, their mass does not exceed some tens of kilograms, and their volume is of the order of some thousands of cm3. Moreover, these materials are metals and the emitted radiation can be easily shielded, so that storage should not create particular problems.

8. Americium 242m and its potential use in space applications

Abstract: The isotope Am242m is an interesting nuclide as it shows one of the known highest neutron fission cross section. This could be useful in some special applications, like the nuclear reactor for space propulsion proposed by C. Rubbia. A detailed measurement of the energy transfer from the fission fragments to the gas as a function of the path and the gas type is an important item for the evaluation of the engine performances. This was carried out by means of an ionisation chamber. However the Am242m availability, in particular at high isotopic abundance, is still at present a serious drawback. A production model, experimentally tested in thermal nuclear reactors, has been used to evaluate the achievable isotopic abundances. The results are quite below 70% and advise the use of separation techniques for further enrichment. The use of Am242m for other applications like nuclear pumped laser is suggested.

Abstract: We report an early result from the ICARUS experiment on the search for nu_mu to nu_e signal due to the LSND anomaly. The search was performed with the ICARUS T600 detector located at the Gran Sasso Laboratory, receiving CNGS neutrinos from CERN at an average energy of about 20 GeV, after a flight path of about 730 km. The LSND anomaly would manifest as an excess of nu_e events, characterized by a fast energy oscillation averaging approximately to sin^2(1.27 Dm^2_new L/ E_nu) = 1/2. The present analysis is based on 1091 neutrino events, which are about 50% of the ICARUS data collected in 2010-2011. Two clear nu_e events have been found, compared with the expectation of 3.7 +/- 0.6 events from conventional sources. Within the range of our observations, this result is compatible with the absence of a LSND anomaly. At 90% and 99% confidence levels the limits of 3.4 and 7.3 events corresponding to oscillation probabilities of 5.4 10^-3 and 1.1 10^-2 are set respectively. The result strongly limits the window of open options for the LSND anomaly to a narrow region around (Dm^2, sin^2(2 theta))_new = (0.5 eV^2, 0.005), where there is an overall agreement (90% CL) between the present ICARUS limit, the published limits of KARMEN and the published positive signals of LSND and MiniBooNE Collaborations., 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: The accuracy of the pulse height weighting technique for the determination of neutron capture cross-sections is investigated. The technique is applied to measurements performed with C6D6 liquid scintillation detectors of two different types using capture samples of various dimensions. The data for well-known (n, gamma) resonances are analyzed using weighting functions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the experimental set-up. Several causes of systematic deviation are identified and their effect is quantified. In all the cases measured the reaction yield agrees with the standard value within 2%. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Open questions are still present in fundamental Physics and Cosmology, like the nature of Dark Matter, the matter-antimatter asymmetry and the validity of the particle interaction Standard Model. Addressing these questions requires a new generation of massive particle detectors exploring the subatomic and astrophysical worlds. ICARUS T600 is the first large mass (760 ton) example of a novel detector generation able to combine the imaging capabilities of the old famous "bubble chamber" with an excellent energy measurement in huge electronic detectors. ICARUS T600 now operates at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory, studying cosmic rays, neutrino oscillation and proton decay. Physical potentialities of this novel telescope are presented through few examples of neutrino interactions reconstructed with unprecedented details. Abstract: We report on the performance of a liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber, operating in a 10 m 3 cryostat. This device built in the framework of the ICARUS T600 programme to serve as a full test facility for the adopted cryogenics and mechanical solutions, was successfully tested in 2000 as the last step before the tests of the first 600 t ICARUS module 1 year later. In a final run at the Gran Sasso Laboratory, whose outcome provides the main subject of this paper, also the readout and imaging capabilities of the installed wire chamber and the overall performance of the detector have been successfully tested.

Abstract: Years of R&D allowed the overcoming of the main technological problems in the establishment of the ICARUS technology. A major step of the ICARUS scientific program has been the construction and testing of a 10 m3 prototype, which paved the way for the installation of the first 600 t ICARUS module. We present a summary of the basic principles of the ICARUS technique and some of the events collected exposing the 10 m3 module to cosmic rays at LNGS, from February to May 2000.

Abstract: The latest evolutions of the ICARUS project are reviewed. During the present year the collaboration has been heavily involved into the construction of the first full scale prototypes of the 600 ton ICARUS detector. Cryogenic and purification tests as well as mechanical tests on a wires chamber module, are presently under completion. No major problems were found and we foresee to be ready for the commissioning of the major detector components by the end of the present year. Also, the Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation program has been subject to a rapid acceleration. Following our formal proposal, submitted and approved at the beginning of this year by the CERN SPSLC, a working group has been formed to study the details of the beam and a sensitive program has been formulated by which first neutrinos can be sent to the Gran Sasso at the end of year 2001.

Abstract: The ICARUS collaboration has demonstrated, following the operation of a 600 ton (T600) detector at shallow depth, that the technique based on liquid Argon TPCs is now mature. The study of rare events, not contemplated in the Standard Model, can greatly benefit from the use of this kind of detectors. In particular, a deeper understanding of atmospheric neutrino properties will be obtained thanks to the unprecedented quality of the data ICARUS provides. However if we concentrate on the T600 performance, most of the $\nu_\mu$ charged current sample will be partially contained, due to the reduced dimensions of the detector. In this article, we address the problem of how well we can determine the kinematics of events having partially contained tracks. The analysis of a large sample of atmospheric muons collected during the T600 test run demonstrate that, in case the recorded track is at least one meter long, the muon momentum can be reconstructed by an algorithm that measures the Multiple Coulomb Scattering along the particle's path. Moreover, we show that momentum resolution can be improved by a factor two using an algorithm based on the Kalman Filtering technique. Abstract: A procedure to filter the ICARUS digitized data is presented. The final multi-kiloton detector will provide raw data at a rate of the order of 100 Gbytes/s and therefore a crucial element of the acquisition chain will be the on-line data reduction system. A filter has been developed to process the signals and to tag the meaningful data. The hit detection efficiency has been evaluated on a sample of signals obtained from cosmic rays events in the 3 t ICARUS prototype. Its robustness has been tested also on simulated events with different signal to noise ratio. The hit finder hardware implementation is also presented.

Abstract: The ICARUS project aims at the realisation of a large liquid argon TPC to be run at the Underground Laboratories of Gran Sasso in Italy. An intense R&D activity has put on firm grounds this new detector technology and experimentally confirmed its feasibility on a few ton scale. Based on these solid achievements, the collaboration is now confident of being able to build and safely operate a multi-kton detector. The reseach program of the experiment involves the systematic study of a wide spectrum of physical phenomena covering many orders of magnitude in the energy deposited in the detector: from the few MeV of solar neutrino interactions, to the about one GeV of the proton decay and atmospheric neutrinos, up to the higher energies of neutrinos from accelerators.

The production of these nuclides from neutron capture by atmospheric argon is estimated by taking into account both cosmic rays and contributions from nuclear explosions.

Abstract: By using solid-state nuclear track detectors arranged in 2π geometry we collected 27 events due to the radioactive decay of 228 Th by 20 O emission. The partial half-life is (5.29 ± 1.01) × 10 20 s and the branching ratio relative to α decay is (1.13 ± 0.22) × 10 −13 . This is the first case of observation of spontaneous emission of oxygen clusters from nuclei.

Abstract: The high energy electrons produced by linear accelerators can generate several radioisotopes by means of photonuclear reactions. The activity produced in the head of a 15 MV Mevatron Siemens 77 medical linear accelerator was measured by high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, during its decommissioning 1 year after the last clinical use. The activity of 54Mn, 57Co, 60Co, 181W, and 65Zn was measured while the activity of other radioisotopes which emit soft beta or gamma rays such as 59Ni, 63Ni, and 55Fe was inferred by appropriate scaling factors. The number of pieces requiring particular care is limited, their mass does not exceed some tens of kilograms, and their volume is of the order of some thousands of cm3. Moreover, these materials are metals and the emitted radiation can be easily shielded, so that storage should not create particular problems.

22. Neutron activation analysis of obsidian from two Neolithic sites in Italy

Abstract: The report presents the results of the characterization of obsidian from two Neolithic sites in Italy, Gaione on the Po Plain and Bevilacqua in Calabria. The comparison of neutron activation analyses made at laboratories in Milan and Bradford shows good agreement between the two. Neutron activation analysis is confirmed to be a reliable method for the sourcing of obsidian in Italy. A total of 17 pieces of obsidian from Gaione is examined; this makes it the Neolithic site with the largest number of samples analysed to date in northern Italy. Three different sources of obsidian are observed at the site: Lipari, Palmarola and Sardinia. In addition, the material from Gaione displays an association between lithic technology and the source of the obsidian. Specifically, obsidian from the island of Lipari is represented at Gaione principally in the form of blades. The six pieces analysed from Bevilacqua all come from Lipari. The report closes with a brief discussion of some of the implications of the results for the study of exchange systems in the Neolithic period.

The data have been collected with a 50 liters ICARUS-like chamber located between the CHORUS and NOMAD experiments at the CERN West Area Neutrino Facility (WANF). We discuss both the instrumental performance of the detector and its capability to identify and reconstruct low-multiplicity neutrino interactions.

Abstract: A Micromegas detector was used in the neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN to evaluate the spatial distribution of the neutron beam as a function of its kinetic energy. This was achieved over a large range of neutron energies by using two complementary processes: at low energy by capture of a neutron via the 6Li(n,[alpha])t reaction, and at high energy by elastic scattering of neutrons on gas nuclei (argon+isobutane or helium+isobutane). Abstract: We have constructed and operated the ICARUS T600 liquid argon (LAr) time projection chamber (TPC). The ICARUS T600 detector is the largest LAr TPC ever built, with a size of about 500 tons of fully imaging mass. The design and assembly of the detector relied on industrial support and represents the applications of concepts matured in laboratory tests to the kton scale. The ICARUS T600 was commissioned for a technical run that lasted about 3 months. During this period all the detector features were extensively tested with an exposure to cosmic-rays at surface with a resulting data collection of about 30000 events. The detector was developed as the first element of a modular design. Thanks to the concept of modularity, it will be possible to realize a detector with several ktons active mass, to act as an observatory for astroparticle and neutrino physics at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory and a second-generation nucleon decay experiment. In this paper a description of the ICARUS T600 is given, detailing its design specifications, assembly procedures and acceptance tests. Abstract: By using a low-sensitivity glass track detector in planar geometry we measured the decay rate of ${}^{232}\mathrm{U}$ by spontaneous fission to be ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{SF}}=(8.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}24}{\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1},$ corresponding to a half-life ${T}_{1/2}=(8.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.7)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{22}\mathrm{s}.$ The inconsistency and consistency of this result with previous work is discussed, and spontaneous fission half-lives are compared with cluster decay ones for the various uranium isotopes measured up to now.

Abstract: This is a short note to acknowledge the successful operation of a 140-cm drift liquid argon TPC built in the framework of the ICARUS experiment. We show few cosmic muon tracks crossing the whole drift volume from the wire planes to the cathode. Data were taken at drift fields of 450 and 500 V/cm.

Abstract: We exploited the crossing muon data, collected in the 50 l liquid argon TPC exposed at the CERN neutrino beam in 1997, to investigate the possibility of identitying the direction of minimum ionizing particle tracks relying only on δ-rays orientation. In this note we show that simple selection criteria allow using δ-rays down to very low energy (few MeV) with high efficiency and no misidentification of their direction. The Monte Carlo prediction – two recognized δ-rays per meter of track – is very well matched by the result of the scanning of the experimental data.

Abstract: We present the results of a test done with a Liquid Xenon (LXe) detector for “Dark Matter” search, exposed to a neutron beam to produce nuclear recoil events simulating those which would be generated by WIMP's elastic scattering. The aim of the experiment was to measure directly the scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoil. The nuclear recoil considered in the test was in the tens of keV range. The ratio of measured visible energy over the true recoil energy was evaluated to be about 20%, in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We report a new measurement of the rate of spontaneous emission of monoenergetic Ne nuclear clusters from $^{232}\mathrm{U}$, which results in a revision of rates previously reported for Ne radioactivity of $^{232}\mathrm{U}$, $^{234}\mathrm{U}$, and $^{235}\mathrm{U}$. The Ne emission rate goes up a factor of 4.6 for $^{232}\mathrm{U}$, goes down a factor of 4.8 for $^{234}\mathrm{U}$, and may have been marginally detected (1.9\ensuremath{\sigma}) for $^{235}\mathrm{U}$.

Abstract: The concentration of 7 elements (Na, Al, Mg, Ti, Ca, V, Mn) was determined by Neutron Activation Analysis in 35 samples of pottery and 14 samples of clay. The samples were collected in Mothia (a Phoenician stronghold in Sicily during 5th–4th century B. C.) and in its neighbourhoods. Cluster analysis of the data showed that most of the samples are homogeneous and confirmed the archaeological evidence that they are mostly local ware. The detailed results of the analyses are reported and the technique used for cluster analysis is described.

Abstract: A method for the determination of the ..gamma..-ray activity of large volume sources is described and discussed. The efficiency of the detector is expressed as the product of an intrinsic, a geometrical, and a self-absorption factor. The first and the second terms are determined experimentally while the last is evaluated theoretically. The method has been applied to the determination of the ..gamma.. specific activity of natural potassium and natural lanthanum. For potassium a value of 3.21 +- 0.01 ..gamma../s g of K was obtained, while for /sup 138/La the partial half-lives for the photons of 789.1 and 1435.8 keV turned out to be 3.68 +- 0.14 x 10/sup 11/ y and 1.99 +- 0.03 x 10/sup 11/ y, respectively.

Abstract: A non-destructive system for determination of silver traces in air particulates collected on cellulose filters is described, based on neutron activation followed by110Ag β− counting instead of the 657.7 keV γ-ray. The determination limit (for 10% confidence limit) is estimated to be about 10−9 g. The method is easily applicable to the determination of silver in cloud seeding experiments, since the filters themselves provide a consistent and fairly uniform source and samples are collected in general far from industrial areas, where the concentration of possible interfering elements in air is reasonably low.

Abstract: The ICARUS T600 detector, the largest liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) realized after many years of RD activities, was installed and successfully operated for 3 years at the INFN Gran Sasso underground Laboratory. One of the most important issues was the need of an extremely low residual electronegative impurity content in the liquid Argon, in order to transport the free electrons created by the ionizing particles with a very small attenuation along the drift path. The solutions adopted for the Argon re-circulation and purification systems have permitted to reach impressive results in terms of Argon purity and a free electron lifetime exceeding 15 ms, corresponding to about 20 parts per trillion of equivalent O2 contamination, a milestone for any future project involving LAr-TPC's and the development of higher detector mass scales., Comment: to be submitted to JINST, LaTeX version

Abstract: We report an updated result from the ICARUS experiment on the search for {\nu}{\mu} ->{\nu}e anomalies with the CNGS beam, produced at CERN with an average energy of 20 GeV and travelling 730 km to the Gran Sasso Laboratory. The present analysis is based on a total sample of 1995 events of CNGS neutrino interactions, which corresponds to an almost doubled sample with respect to the previously published result. Four clear {\nu}e events have been visually identified over the full sample, compared with an expectation of 6.4 +- 0.9 events from conventional sources. The result is compatible with the absence of additional anomalous contributions. At 90% and 99% confidence levels the limits to possible oscillated events are 3.7 and 8.3 respectively. The corresponding limit to oscillation probability becomes consequently 3.4 x 10-3 and 7.6 x 10-3 respectively. The present result confirms, with an improved sensitivity, the early result already published by the ICARUS collaboration. Abstract: During May 2012, the CERN-CNGS neutrino beam has been operated for two weeks for a total of 1.8 10^17 pot in bunched mode, with a 3 ns narrow width proton beam bunches, separated by 100 ns. This tightly bunched beam structure allows a very accurate time of flight measurement of neutrinos from CERN to LNGS on an event-by-event basis. Both the ICARUS-T600 PMT-DAQ and the CERN-LNGS timing synchronization have been substantially improved for this campaign, taking ad-vantage of additional independent GPS receivers, both at CERN and LNGS as well as of the deployment of the "White Rabbit" protocol both at CERN and LNGS. The ICARUS-T600 detector has collected 25 beam-associated events; the corresponding time of flight has been accurately evaluated, using all different time synchronization paths. The measured neutrino time of flight is compatible with the arrival of all events with speed equivalent to the one of light: the difference between the expected value based on the speed of light and the measured value is tof_c - tof_nu = (0.10 \pm 0.67stat. \pm 2.39syst.) ns. This result is in agreement with the value previously reported by the ICARUS collaboration, tof_c - tof_nu = (0.3 \pm 4.9stat. \pm 9.0syst.) ns, but with improved statistical and systematic errors., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

Abstract: We carried out a careful evaluation of the performance of the large cathode area ETL 9357FLA photomultiplier tube operating at cryogenic temperature. The measurements were focused on evaluating the parameters which mainly characterize the operating performances of the device down to 77 K and the spread of the distinctive features over 54 samples assembled in the ICARUS apparatus. The results that we obtained demonstrate that the photomultiplier is suited for light detection in such unconventional operating conditions, certifying this device for the direct measurement of scintillation light coming from noble-gas liquids in detectors dedicated to neutrino physics and dark matter research. The data have been collected with a 50 liters ICARUS-like chamber located between the CHORUS and NOMAD experiments at the CERN West Area Neutrino Facility (WANF). We discuss both the instrumental performance of the detector and its capability to identify and reconstruct low multiplicity neutrino interactions. Abstract: Ovarian tissue cryopreservation and autotransplantation can restore ovarian endocrine function and fertility and recently were changed from experimental to fertility preservation procedures for medical indications by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. Such advances have resulted in discussions around the utility of ovarian cryopreservation in healthy women to preserve fertility and delay menopause or as a hormone replacement approach. Such 'elective' use of ovarian tissue cryopreservation requires a risk-benefit assessment. 50. Transatlantic Air Travel in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy: Does It Affect the Fetus?

Abstract: Most commercial airlines allow pregnant women to fly up to 36 weeks of gestation. Available information suggests that noise, vibration, and cosmic radiation present a small risk for the pregnant air traveler. The goal of the study was to assess the possible effect of transatlantic flights on the condition of the third-trimester fetus. In total, 112 patients were recruited into the study between January 2005 and June 2016. All underwent a transatlantic flight in the third trimester of pregnancy. All underwent nonstress test before and within 12 hours after the transatlantic flight, and 24 hours later. Patients were asked to report changes in fetal movements (FMs), if any, during takeoff, flight itself, and landing. The time of flight varied from 8 to 15 hours; average flight time was 9 ± 3.8 hours. Ninety-eight patients were the passengers of first or business class, and the rest were of economy class. Increased FM during takeoff was reported by 17 patients (15%), no change in FM by 62 (35%), decreased FM by 4 (3.6%). During flight itself, increased FM was reported by 6 pregnant passengers (5.4%), no change in FM by 70 (63%), decreased FM by 8 (7%).
