Abstract

We report the development of GPT-4, a large-scale, multimodal model which can accept image and text inputs and produce text outputs. While less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, including passing a simulated bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers. GPT-4 is a Transformer-based model pre-trained to predict the next token in a document. The post-training alignment process results in improved performance on measures of factuality and adherence to desired behavior. A core component of this project was developing infrastructure and optimization methods that behave predictably across a wide range of scales. Abstract

Objective To describe the prevalence of nutritional risk factors among elderly residents in a rural Hispanic and non-Hispanic white population. Design A geographically based survey of community-dwelling elderly adults. Subjects/setting From July 1993 to July 1995, all Hispanic persons older than 65 years and an age-stratified, random sample of 69% of non-Hispanic white persons, from 2 Colorado counties, were invited to participate in a study of functional impairment and disability (81% responded). After exclusion of 184 respondents who required a surrogate respondent and 8 with missing diet data, the study consisted of 1,006 subjects. Interviews included questions similar to the Nutrition Screening Initiative checklist, a 21-item food frequency questionnaire, and anthropometric measures. Statistical analyses performed Gender- and ethnicity-specific, age-adjusted prevalence for each risk factor was estimated by use of logistic regression. Results Hispanic participants were more likely than non-Hispanic whites to report inadequate intake of vegetables, problems with teeth or dentures that limited the kinds and amounts of food eaten, difficulty preparing meals, and lack of money needed to buy food. Hispanic women reported nutritional risk factors more often than Hispanic men, although anthropometric markers indicated that Hispanic men may be at higher risk of nutritional deficiency. Applications/conclusions Hispanic men and women had a higher prevalence of nutritional risk factors than non-Hispanic whites. Intervention programs targeting rural, elderly Hispanics should aim to ensure that basic nutrition needs (access to food, help preparing meals, and adequate dental care) are being met. Abstract

Recent work in empirical moral psychology has led to at least one point of consensus: intuitive, psychologically-spontaneous cognitive processes play a central and inescapable role in moral evaluation. However, among those who accept that intuitive processes play a central role there remains much debate concerning the underlying character of these intuitive processes, as well as their developmental and evolutionary origins. The two dominant approaches are represented by psychological sentimentalists, who hold that these underlying processes are essentially emotion-driven, and moral nativists, who hold that these processes are subserved by innate, tacitly-held moral principles. In the course of this dissertation I critically examine each of these prominent psychological accounts, and work to outline a novel alternative. Questions concerning the psychological processes involved in moral judgment are interesting in their own right, as well as for their potential relevance to debates in ethical theory. The observed role of intuitive processing in moral judgment challenges those traditions in psychology and philosophy according to which deliberate rational processes do or should dominate. Indeed, it is widely thought that the centrality of these intuitive processes serves to undermine the status of morality and the epistemic standing of moral beliefs. Both the sentimentalist and the nativist analyses of intuitive moral judgment have been used to ground challenges to the status of morality and moral belief. I build on my critiques of the empirical adequacy of the psychological and evolutionary claims grounding these challenges to develop ways to defeat them. When properly understood, neither of these accounts of intuitive moral psychology supports a global challenge to the epistemic standing of moral belief.

The HER2/ neu oncogene product, p185HER2/ neu, is overexpressed on the surface of many human breast cancers. Strains of transgenic mice have been developed that express the rat neu oncogene in mammary epithelial cells and develop spontaneous mammary tumors that overexpress p185 neu. This model provides an ideal system for testing interventions to prevent tumor development. In this study, we immunized neu-transgenic mice with a vaccine consisting of the extracellular domain of p185 neu (NeuECD). Immunized mice developed Neu-specific humoral immune responses, as measured by circulating anti-Neu antibodies in their sera, and cellular immune responses, as measured by lymphocyte proliferation to NeuECD in vitro. In addition, the subsequent development of mammary tumors was significantly lower in immunized mice than in controls and vaccine treatment was associated with a significant increase in median survival.
