7. Association of the Healthy Dietary Index 2020 and its components with chronic respiratory disease among U.S. adults

Abstract

BackgroundChronic respiratory disease is an important public health problem in the United States and globally. Diet, an important part of a healthy lifestyle, is also relevant to chronic respiratory health. We aimed to explore the relationship between overall dietary quality and the risk of chronic respiratory disease (CRD), include chronic bronchitis (CB), emphysema and asthma.MethodA total of 4,499 United States adults were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2017–2018. Diet quality was assessed using 2 day, 24 h dietary recall data and quantified as the Healthy Diet Index (HEI)-2020 score. Binary logistic regression models, restricted cubic splines (RCS) and generalized additive modeling (GAM), the weighted quartile sum (WQS) and qgcom models were used to assess the relationship between HEI-2020 scores and risk of CB, emphysema and asthma.ResultsHigh HEI-2020 scores are associated with low risk of chronic respiratory disease (CB: 0.98, 0.97–0.99; emphysema: 0.98, 0.97–0.99; asthma: 0.98, 0.97–0.99) and consistent results across different dietary variable categorization (Tertile: CB: 0.58, 0.42–0.81; asthma: 0.51, 0.35–0.74; Quartile: CB: 0.57, 0.34–0.97; asthma: 0.56, 0.36–0.86) and different weighting models. Negative dose-response relationship between dietary quality and risk of chronic respiratory disease also shown in RCS and GAM models. The WQS and qgcom models also showed a healthy mixing effect of dietary components on respiratory disease, with high-quality proteins, vegetables, and fruits making the heaviest contributions.ConclusionHigher HEI-2020 scores were associated with lower risk of CB, emphysema, and asthma. Following Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020–2025 could support enhanced respiratory health.

Abstract

Due to the muon tomography's capability of imaging high Z materials, some potential applications have been reported on inspecting smuggled nuclear materials in customs. A compact Cosmic Ray Muons (CRM) imaging prototype, Lanzhou University Muon Imaging System (LUMIS), is comprehensively introduced in this paper including the structure design, assembly, data acquisition and analysis, detector performance test, and material imaging commissioning etc. Casted triangular prism plastic scintillators (PS) were coupled with Si-PMs for sensitive detector components in system. LUMIS's experimental results show that the detection efficiency of an individual detector layer is about 98%, the position resolution for vertical incident muons is 2.5 mm and the angle resolution is 8.73 mrad given a separation distance of 40.5 cm. Moreover, the image reconstruction software was developed based on the Point of Closest Approach (PoCA) to detect lead bricks as our target. The reconstructed images indicate that the profile of the lead bricks in the image is highly consistent with the target. Subsequently, the capability of LUMIS to distinguish different materials, such as Pb, Cu, Fe, and Al, was investigated as well. The lower limit of response time for rapidly alarming high-Z materials is also given and discussed. The successful development and commissioning of the LUMIS prototype have provided a new solution option in technology and craftsmanship for developing compact CRM imaging systems that can be used in many applications.

Abstract

Ischemia/reperfusion injury-mediated (IRI-mediated) primary graft dysfunction (PGD) adversely affects both short- and long-term outcomes after lung transplantation, a procedure that remains the only treatment option for patients suffering from end-stage respiratory failure. While B cells are known to regulate adaptive immune responses, their role in lung IRI is not well understood. Here, we demonstrated by intravital imaging that B cells are rapidly recruited to injured lungs, where they extravasate into the parenchyma. Using hilar clamping and transplant models, we observed that lung-infiltrating B cells produce the monocyte chemokine CCL7 in a TLR4-TRIF-dependent fashion, a critical step contributing to classical monocyte (CM) recruitment and subsequent neutrophil extravasation, resulting in worse lung function. We found that synergistic BCR-TLR4 activation on B cells is required for the recruitment of CMs to the injured lung. Finally, we corroborated our findings in reperfused human lungs, in which we observed a correlation between B cell infiltration and CM recruitment after transplantation. This study describes a role for B cells as critical orchestrators of lung IRI. 41. Energy-based Periodicity Mining with Deep Features for Action Repetition Counting in Unconstrained Videos

Abstract

Action repetition counting is to estimate the occurrence times of the repetitive motion in one action, which is a relatively new, important but challenging measurement problem. To solve this problem, we propose a new method superior to the traditional ways in two aspects, without preprocessing and applicable for arbitrary periodicity actions. Without preprocessing, the proposed model makes our method convenient for real applications; processing the arbitrary periodicity action makes our model more suitable for the actual circumstance. In terms of methodology, firstly, we analyze the movement patterns of the repetitive actions based on the spatial and temporal features of actions extracted by deep ConvNets; Secondly, the Principal Component Analysis algorithm is used to generate the intuitive periodic information from the chaotic high-dimensional deep features; Thirdly, the periodicity is mined based on the high-energy rule using Fourier transform; Finally, the inverse Fourier transform with a multi-stage threshold filter is proposed to improve the quality of the mined periodicity, and peak detection is introduced to finish the repetition counting. Our work features two-fold: 1) An important insight that deep features extracted for action recognition can well model the self-similarity periodicity of the repetitive action is presented. 2) A high-energy based periodicity mining rule using deep features is presented, which can process arbitrary actions without preprocessing. Experimental results show that our method achieves comparable results on the public datasets YT Segments and QUVA.
