The incidence of UC in the Xinjiang region is relatively high in China and the manifestations of UC in Uyghur and Han patients are usually differential. This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers of UC.Methods: All miRNA and mRNA were extracted from the tissue samples obtained from participants in Xinjiang. Differential expression analysis was performed on all mRNAs and miRNAs. The target genes of miRNAs were predicted via three databases. The clusterProfiler package was used for GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis.Results: Preliminarily, four miRNAs and 15 genes were associated with the differential manifestations of UC in Uyghur and Han patients. Through the co-expression network construction and further screening in more samples, two miRNAs (hsa-miR-141-5p and hsa-miR-378a-5p) and three genes (ARNTL2, CLDN1 and SLC6A14) were found to be more crucial. These 15 genes were enriched in tight junction, NF-κB, and several other pathways.Conclusion: Two miRNAs (hsa-miR-141-5p and hsa-miR-378a-5p) and three genes (ARNTL2, CLDN1, and SLC6A14) associated with the differential manifestations of UC in Uyghur and Han population were identified, which were potential biomarkers.Keywords: ulcerative colitis, miRNA, biomarkers, Uyghur, Han

Substantial anthropogenic emissions from China have resulted in serious air pollution, and this has generated considerable academic and public concern. The physical transport of air pollutants in the atmosphere has been extensively investigated; however, understanding the mechanisms how the pollutant was transferred through economic and trade activities remains a challenge. For the first time, we quantified and tracked China's air pollutant emission flows embodied in interprovincial trade, using a multiregional input - output model framework. Trade relative emissions for four key air pollutants (primary fine particle matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and non-methane volatile organic compounds) were assessed for 2007 in each Chinese province. We found that emissions were significantly redistributed among provinces owing to interprovincial trade. Large amounts of emissions were embodied in the imports of eastern regions from northern and central regions, and these were determined by differences in regional economic status and environmental policy. It is suggested that measures should be introduced to reduce air pollution by integrating cross-regional consumers and producers within national agreements to encourage efficiency improvement in the supply chain and optimize consumption structure internationally. The consumption-based air pollutant emission inventory developed in this work can be further used to attribute pollution to various economic activities and final demand types with the aid of air quality models.

Detection of GDNF is vital to monitoring the survival of sympathetic and sensory neurons. However, the specific method for GDNF detection is also un-discovered. The purpose of this study is to explore the method for protein detection of GDNF.Methods: A novel visual detection method based on a molecular translator and isothermal strand-displacement polymerization reaction (ISDPR) has been proposed for the detection of GDNF. In this study, a molecular translator was employed to convert the input protein to output deoxyribonucleic acid signal, which was further amplified by ISDPR. The product of ISDPR was detected by a lateral flow biosensor within 30 minutes.Results: This novel visual detection method based on a molecular translator and ISDPR has very high sensitivity and selectivity, with a dynamic response ranging from 1 pg/mL to 10 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 1 pg/mL of GDNF.Conclusion: This novel visual detection method exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity, which is very simple and universal for GDNF detection to help disease therapy in clinical practice.Keywords: lateral flow biosensor, molecular translator, isothermal strand-displacement polymerization reaction

As a potential novel immunotherapy, M. marinum was studied and compared with two other bacilli, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and live attenuated M. tuberculosis. We examined the changes in both the bacilli and immune cells, especially the time course of the viability of mycobacteria in the coculture system and host immune responses including multinuclear giant cell formation by Wright–Giemsa modified staining, macrophage polarization by cell surface antigen expression, and cytokines/chemokine production by both mRNA expression and protein secretion.Results: The M. marinum stimulated coculture group showed more expression of CD209, CD68, CD80, and CD86 than the BCG and M. tuberculosis (an attenuated strain, H37Ra) groups, although the differences were not statistically significant. Moreover, the M. marinum group expressed more interleukin (IL)-1B and IL-12p40 on day 3 (IL-1B: P = 0.003 and 0.004, respectively; IL-12p40: P = 0.001 and 0.011, respectively), a higher level of CXCL10 on day 1 (P = 0.006 and 0.026, respectively), and higher levels of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand (CXCL) 8 and chemokine (C motif) ligand (XCL) 1 on day 3 (CXCL8: P = 0.012 and 0.014, respectively; XCL1: P = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively). The M. marinum stimulated coculture group also secreted more tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1ß, and IL-10 on day 1 (TNF-α: P = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively; IL-1ß: P = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively; IL-10: P = 0.002 and 0.019, respectively) and day 3 (TNF-α: P = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively; IL-1ß: P = 0.000 and 0.001, respectively; IL-10: P = 0.000 and 0.000, respectively). In addition, the colony-forming units (an index of viability) of M. marinum in the M. marinum stimulated coculture group was significantly less than that of BCG and H37Ra in their corresponding bacillus stimulated groups (P = 0.037 and 0.013, respectively).Conclusion: Our results indicated that M. marinum could be a potentially safe and effective immunotherapy.Keywords: immunotherapy, Mycobacterium marinum, bacilli, immunity

The mean particle size of the nanoparticles was 95.3 nm, and the entrapment efficiency and drug loading for quercetin were 48.5% and 2.45%, respectively. Topical delivery in vitro and in vivo of the quercetin-loaded nanoparticles was evaluated using quercetin propylene glycol solution as the control.Results: Compared with quercetin solution, the quercetin-loaded nanoparticles showed higher permeation ability, and significantly increased accumulation of quercetin in the skin, especially in the epidermis. Microstructure observation of the skin surface after administration indicated that the interaction between ingredients of the nanoparticles and the skin surface markedly changed the morphology of the stratum corneum and disrupted the corneocyte layers, thus facilitating the permeation and accumulation of quercetin in skin.Conclusion: Lecithin-chitosan nanoparticles are a promising carrier for topical delivery of quercetin.Keywords: quercetin, tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate, lecithin, chitosan, nanoparticles, topical delivery

Background: Single-dose benzathine penicillin G (BPG) is the preferred therapy for early syphilis, but poorer serologic responses have been observed among people with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH). No enhanced regimen has previously been shown to improve serologic outcomes of early syphilis., Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to compare the treatment responses to single-dose BPG combined with 7-day doxycycline versus BPG alone in PWH who presented with early syphilis. Rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titers were determined every 3-6 months for all included PWH. Serologic response was defined as at least a 4-fold decline in RPR titers at month 12., Results: During January 2018 to March 2022, 223 PWH with 307 episodes of early syphilis received single-dose BPG plus doxycycline and 347 PWH with 391 episodes received BPG alone. The median age was 36 years and baseline CD4 count was 600 cells/mm3. In the intention-to-treat with last-observation-carried-forward analysis, PWH receiving BPG plus doxycycline had a significantly higher serologic response rate at 12 months of treatment than those receiving BPG alone (79.5% vs 70.3%, respectively; P = .006). The factors associated with 12-month serologic response were RPR titer (per 1-log2 increase, adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15-1.35) and receipt of BPG plus doxycycline (AOR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.20-2.46). In the subgroup analyses, BPG plus doxycycline was consistently associated with a better serologic response than BPG alone at month 12., Conclusions: Among PWH with early syphilis, single-dose BPG plus doxycycline achieved higher serologic responses than BPG alone during a 12-month follow-up period., Competing Interests: Potential conflicts of interest. The unexpected monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak has been reported in many non-endemic countries and regions since May 2022. The mutant strains of Mpox virus (MPXV) were found with higher infectivity and greater capability for sustained human-to-human transmission, posing a significant public health threat. MPXV A29L, a protein homolog of vaccinia virus (VACV) A27L, plays an important role in viral attachment to host cell membranes. Therefore, MPXV A29L is considered the diagnostic target and the potential vaccine candidate for eliciting neutralizing antibodies and protective immune responses. In response to the escalating Mpox outbreak, three monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (2-9B, 3-8G, and 2-5H) targeting the different domains of MPXV A29L have been developed in the study. Among them, 2-5H is highly specific for MPXV A29L without exhibiting cross-reactivity with VACV A27L. The antibody pairing composed of 2-5H and 3-8G has been developed as the lateral flow immunochromatographic assay for specific detection of MPXV A29L. However, these three mAbs were unable to inhibit A29L binding to heparin column or prevent MPXV infection in the neutralization test assays. The results of the serological assays using the truncated A29L fragments as the antigens showed that the Mpox patient sera contained significantly lower levels of antibodies targeting the N-terminal 1-34 residues of A29L, suggesting that the N-terminal portion of A29L is less immunogenic upon natural infection. Background: A significant number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors are experiencing long COVID, with symptoms lasting beyond three months. While diverse long COVID symptoms are established, there are gaps in understanding its long-term trends, intensity, and risk factors, requiring further investigation., Aims: This study aimed to investigate the long COVID characteristics and associated factors by following COVID-19 survivors for one year post-infection and comparing them with healthy counterparts., Main Methods: In this longitudinal, correlational study, COVID-19 survivors diagnosed between November 2021 and February 2023 were monitored every three months for a year. Participants aged ≥18 years who had reported a positive COVID-19 test were recruited via social media and healthcare provider referrals., Key Findings: Out of 182 survivors who initially agreed to participate, 176 completed the study. The mean age was 47.56 years (SD = 16.2), and 51.1 % were female. There was a clinically significant decline in cognitive function and health-related quality of life over time, with symptoms like shortness of breath, reduced physical fitness, and increased health concerns. Those with severe acute COVID-19 symptoms experienced greater cognitive and physical declines and more shortness of breath a year later. Lower financial status was linked to poorer health-related quality of life and increased health concerns., Significance: A year post-infection, COVID-19's impact on cognitive function and health-related quality of life remains significant, affecting individuals and communities. Survivors with severe initial symptoms and economic disadvantages need more attention. Cyclobutanes are prominent structural components in natural products and drug molecules. With the advent of strain-release-driven synthesis, ring-opening reactions of bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) provide an attractive pathway to construct these three-dimensional structures. However, the stereoselective difunctionalization of the central C-C σ-bonds remains challenging. Reported herein is a covalent-based organocatalytic strategy that exploits radical NHC catalysis to achieve diastereoselective acylfluoroalkylation of BCBs under mild conditions. The Breslow enolate acts as a single electron donor and provides an NHC-bound ketyl radical with appropriate steric hindrance, which effectively distinguishes between the two faces of transient cyclobutyl radicals. This operationally simple method tolerates various fluoroalkyl reagents and common functional groups, providing a straightforward access to polysubstituted cyclobutanes (75 examples, up to >19:1 d.r.). Due to its inherent ductility, Ag 2 S shows promise as a flexible thermoelectric material for harnessing waste heat from diverse sources. However, its thermoelectric performance remains subpar, and existing enhancement strategies often compromise its ductility. In this study, a novel Sn-doping-induced biphasic structuring approach is introduced to synergistically control electron and phonon transport. Specifically, Sn-doping is incorporated into Ag 2 S 0.7 Se 0.3 to form a biphasic composition comprising (Ag, Sn) 2 S 0.7 Se 0.3 as the primary phase and Ag 2 S 0.7 Se 0.3 as the secondary phase. This biphasic configuration achieves a competitive figure-of-merit ZT of 0.42 at 343 K while retaining exceptional ductility, exceeding 90%. The dominant (Ag, Sn) 2 S 0.7 Se 0.3 phase bolsters the initially low carrier concentration, with interfacial boundaries between the phases effectively mitigating carrier scattering and promoting carrier mobility. Consequently, the optimized power factor reaches 5 µW cm -1 K -2 at 343 K. Additionally, the formation of the biphasic structure induces diverse micro/nano defects, suppressing lattice thermal conductivity to a commendable 0.18 W m -1  K -1 , thereby achieving optimized thermoelectric performance. As a result, a four-leg in-plane flexible thermoelectric device is fabricated, exhibiting a maximum power density of ≈49 µW cm -2 under the temperature difference of 30 K, much higher than that of organic-based flexible thermoelectric devices., (© 2024 The Author(s). Gastric cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in China. Affecting more than 40% of the world's population, Helicobacter pylori is a major risk factor for gastric cancer. While previous clinical trials indicated that eradication of H. pylori could reduce gastric cancer risk, this remains to be shown using a population-based approach. We conducted a community-based, cluster-randomized, controlled, superiority intervention trial in Linqu County, China, with individuals who tested positive for H. pylori using a 13 C-urea breath test randomly assigned to receiving either (1) a 10-day, quadruple anti-H. pylori treatment (comprising 20 mg of omeprazole, 750 mg of tetracycline, 400 mg of metronidazole and 300 mg of bismuth citrate) or (2) symptom alleviation treatment with a single daily dosage of omeprazole and bismuth citrate. H. pylori-negative individuals did not receive any treatment. We examined the incidence of gastric cancer as the primary outcome. A total of 180,284 eligible participants from 980 villages were enrolled over 11.8 years of follow-up, and a total of 1,035 cases of incident gastric cancer were documented. Individuals receiving anti-H. pylori therapy showed a modest reduction in gastric cancer incidence in intention-to-treat analyses (hazard ratio 0.86, 95% confidence interval 0.74-0.99), with a stronger effect observed for those having successful H. pylori eradication (hazard ratio 0.81, 95% confidence interval 0.69-0.96) than for those who failed treatment. Moderate adverse effects were reported in 1,345 participants during the 10-day treatment. We observed no severe intolerable adverse events during either treatment or follow-up. The findings suggest the potential for H. pylori mass screening and eradication as a public health policy for gastric cancer prevention. Wearable thermoelectric (TE) materials are seen as excellent candidates for flexible electronics because of their unique self-powered properties, multistimulus sensing and human waste heat conversion. However, currently reported flexible TE materials still face challenges such as poor durability, uncomfortable wearing and sensing signals crosstalking each other. Herein, this study describes a hot-air cross-linking method for the preparation of multifunctional TE fabrics with enhanced durability. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers with core and sheath structures having different melting points were selected as flexible substrates. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were embedded stably on the surface of the sheath layer in the presence of heat treatment. The fiber-welded structure created by thermal cross-linking improves the durability of TE fabrics, including consistent mechanical and electrical properties after a 6 h wash test and 6000 compression cycles. The unique fiber structure of TE fabrics ensures excellent breathability (313.7 mm s -1 at 200 Pa), which meets the breathability requirements for human wear. In addition, the fiber-prepared sensors have excellent compressive strain response (20 ms response time and 30 ms recovery time) and precise temperature discrimination (0.17 K minimum discrimination temperature) for accurate real-time monitoring of the sensed signals. Thus, the TE fabrics can be used for human motion recognition, including pulse monitoring, sign language expression, and motions in joint areas. Moreover, the fabricated wearable TE device is connected to a Bluetooth module for wireless transmission, which can be used for mechanical and temperature sensing of the robot arm without signals crosstalking. This new durable TE fabric paves the way for the next generation of smart wearable technology.

Coinage-metal clusters with excellent luminescence properties have attracted considerable interest due to their intriguing structures and potential applications. However, achieving strong near-infrared (NIR) luminescence in these clusters is highly challenging. Here, we have successfully synthesized the first Ln III /Cu I bimetallic clusters, formulated as [LnCu 54 O 6 Cl 3 (2-MeO-PhC≡C) 36 ] (ClO 4 ) 6 (Ln = Yb for YbCu 54 , Er for ErCu 54 , and Gd for GdCu 54 ). Single crystal X-ray diffraction showed that the LnCu 54 clusters have a three-layered core-shell structure, consisting of (LnO 6 )@Cu 18 Cl 3 @Cu 36 units protected by 36 2-MeO-PhC≡C - ligands. Notably, the YbCu 54 cluster exhibits significant NIR-II luminescence at 986 nm with the solid quantum efficiency of 33.3%, the highest among Cu clusters with NIR-II emission. This work not only reports the first category of Ln III /Cu I clusters but also presents a method to enhance NIR luminescence in coinage-metal clusters through the incorporation of Ln III ions.

Background: Male hypogonadism is not uncommon in people with HIV (PWH), with estimated prevalence ranging from 9% to 16%. Existing data are limited on the serum testosterone levels in PWH in Asian populations., Methods: We enrolled HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) and had been on stable antiretroviral therapy and MSM without HIV between February 2021 and November 2022. Serum free testosterone levels, sex hormone-binding globulins and other associated hormones were measured. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to assess the association between serum free testosterone levels and clinical variables collected., Results: A total of 447 MSM with HIV and 124 MSM without HIV were enrolled. Compared with MSM without HIV, MSM with HIV had a higher age (median, 41 versus 29.5 years) and prevalence of symptomatic hypogonadism (8.3% versus 1.6%). Among MSM who were aged <35 years, there were no significant differences in the serum free testosterone levels and prevalences of hypogonadism between the two groups. In multiple linear regression analysis, serum free testosterone level significantly decreased with advanced age (a decrease of 1.14 pg/mL per 1-year increase) and a higher body-mass index (BMI) (a decrease of 1.07 pg/mL per 1-kg/m 2 increase), but was not associated with HIV serostatus., Conclusion: We found that MSM with HIV had a higher prevalence of symptomatic hypogonadism than MSM without HIV in Taiwan, which could be attributed to age difference. Tetrahydropyridazines constitute an important structural motif found in numerous natural products and pharmaceutical compounds. Herein, we report an aminoacylation reaction of alkenes that enables the synthesis of 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridazines through cooperative N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and photoredox catalysis. This approach involves the 6-endo-trig cyclization of N-centered hydrazonyl radicals, generated via single-electron oxidation of hydrazones, followed by a radical-radical coupling step. The mild process tolerates a wide range of common functional groups and affords a variety of tetrahydropyridazines in moderate to high yields. Ag 2 Se shows significant potential for near-room-temperature thermoelectric applications, but its performance and device design are still evolving. In this work, we design a novel flexible Ag 2 Se thin-film-based thermoelectric device with optimized electrode materials and structure, achieving a high output power density of over 65 W m -2 and a normalized power density up to 3.68 μW cm -2 K -2 at a temperature difference of 42 K. By fine-tuning vapor selenization time, we strengthen the (013) orientation and carrier mobility of Ag 2 Se films, reducing excessive Ag interstitials and achieving a power factor of over 29 μW cm -1 K -2 at 393 K. A protective layer boosts flexibility of the thin film, retaining 90% performance after 1000 bends at 60°. Coupled with p-type Sb 2 Te 3 thin films and rational simulations, the device shows rapid human motion response and precise servo motor control, highlighting the potential of high-performance Ag 2 Se thin films in advanced applications., (© 2024. We reported 14 cases of Mpox in 10 people with HIV (PWH) and 4 people without HIV (PWoH), of whom 64.3% had sexually transmitted co-infections. Background: Real-world vaccine effectiveness following the third dose of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 remains less investigated among people with HIV (PWH)., Methods: PWH receiving the third dose of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 (either 50- or 100-μg) were enrolled. Participants were followed for 180 days until the fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection, seroconversion of anti-nucleocapsid IgG, death, or loss to follow-up. Anti-spike IgG was determined every 1-3 months., Results: Of 1427 participants undergoing the third-dose COVID-19 vaccination, 632 (44.3%) received 100-μg mRNA-1273, 467 (32.8%) 50-μg mRNA-1273, and 328 (23.0%) BNT162b2 vaccine and the respective rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection or seroconversion of anti-nucleocapsid IgG was 246.1, 280.8 and 245.2 per 1000 person-months of follow-up (log-rank test, p = 0.28). Factors associated with achieving anti-S IgG titers >1047 BAU/mL included CD4 count <200 cells/mm 3 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.11; 95% CI, 0.04-0.31), plasma HIV RNA >200 copies/mL (aOR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.09-0.80), having achieved anti-spike IgG >141 BAU/mL within 3 months after primary vaccination (aOR, 3.69; 95% CI, 2.68-5.07), receiving BNT162b2 vaccine as the third dose (aOR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.10-0.41; reference, 100-μg mRNA-1273), and having previously received two doses of mRNA vaccine in primary vaccination (aOR, 2.46; 95% CI, 1,75-3.45; reference, no exposure to mRNA vaccine)., Conclusions: PWH receiving different types of the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine showed similar vaccine effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Background: Mycoplasma genitalium is an emerging etiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with increasing resistance to antimicrobials. Surveillance on the epidemiology of M. genitalium infection and antimicrobial resistance is warranted., Methods: Between September 2021 and August 2023, people with HIV (PWH) and people without HIV (PWoH) at risk of STIs were screened for M. genitalium infection using a multiplex polymerase-chain-reaction assay of specimens collected from the rectum, urethra, oral cavity, and vagina. The prevalences of resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) of M. genitalium to fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and tetracycline were investigated., Results: During the 2-year study period, 1021 participants were enrolled, including 531 PWH and 490 PWoH. Overall, 83 (8.1%) and 34 (7.6%) participants had M. genitalium infection at baseline and during follow-up, respectively, with the rectum being the most common site of detection (61.5%). With the first course of antimicrobial treatment, 27 of 63 (42.9%) participants with M. genitalium infection were cured during follow-up, including 24 of 58 (41.4%) who received doxycycline monotherapy. The prevalence of RAMs to macrolides, fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines at baseline were 24.3%, 22.4%, and 7.9%, respectively. Though PWH had more M. genitalium infection (10.2% vs 5.9%, p = 0.01), a higher rate of RAMs to macrolides (41.0% vs 14.7%, p < 0.01) was found in PWoH., Conclusions: Among high-risk populations, the prevalence of M. genitalium infection was 8.1%. The overall genotypic resistance of M. genitalium to macrolides and fluoroquinolones was moderately high in Taiwan. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an extensive system of interrelated devices equipped with sensors to monitor and track real world objects, spanning several verticals, covering many different industries. The IoT's promise is capturing interest as its value in healthcare continues to grow, as it can overlay on top of challenges dealing with the rising burden of chronic disease management and an aging population. To address difficulties associated with IoT-enabled healthcare, we propose a secure routing protocol that combines a fuzzy logic system and the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) hierarchically. The suggested method consists of two primary approaches: the fuzzy trust strategy and the WOA-inspired clustering methodology. The first methodology plays a critical role in determining the trustworthiness of connected IoT equipment. Furthermore, a WOA-based clustering framework is implemented. A fitness function assesses the likelihood of IoT devices acting as cluster heads. This formula considers factors such as centrality, range of communication, hop count, remaining energy, and trustworthiness. Compared with other algorithms, the proposed method outperformed them in terms of network lifespan, energy usage, and packet delivery ratio by 47%, 58%, and 17.7%, respectively., (© 2024. Graphite exhibits crystal anisotropy, which impedes the mass transfer of ion intercalation and extraction processes in Li-ion batteries. Herein, a dual-shock chemical strategy has been developed to synthesize the carbon anode. This approach comprised two key phases: (1) a thermal shock utilizing ultrahigh temperature (3228 K) can thermodynamically facilitate graphitization; (2) a mechanical shock (21.64 MPa) disrupting the π-π interactions in the aromatic chains of carbon can result in hybrid-structured carbon composed of crystalline and amorphous carbon. The optimized carbon (DSC-200-0.3) demonstrates a capacity of 208.61 mAh/g at a 10C rate, with a significant enhancement comparing with 15 mAh/g of the original graphite. Impressively, it maintains 81.06% capacity even after 3000 charge-discharge cycles. Dynamic process analysis reveals that this superior rate performance is attributed to a larger interlayer spacing facilitating ion transport comparing with the original graphite, disordered amorphous carbon for additional lithium storage sites, and crystallized carbon for enhanced charge transfer. The dual-shock chemical approach offers a cost-effective and efficient method to rapidly produce hybrid-structured carbon anodes, enabling 10C fast charging capabilities in lithium-ion batteries.

Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis, which involves mutually beneficial interactions between soil fungi and tree roots, is essential for promoting tree growth. To establish this symbiotic relationship, fungal symbionts must initiate and sustain mutualistic interactions with host plants while avoiding host defense responses. This study investigated the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by fungal NADPH oxidase (Nox) in the development of Laccaria bicolor/Populus tremula × alba symbiosis. Our findings revealed that L. bicolor LbNox expression was significantly higher in ectomycorrhizal roots than in free-living mycelia. RNAi was used to silence LbNox, which resulted in decreased ROS signaling, limited formation of the Hartig net, and a lower mycorrhizal formation rate. Using Y2H library screening, BiFC and Co-IP, we demonstrated an interaction between the mitogen-activated protein kinase LbSakA and LbNoxR. LbSakA-mediated phosphorylation of LbNoxR at T409, T477 and T480 positively modulates LbNox activity, ROS accumulation and upregulation of symbiosis-related genes involved in dampening host defense reactions. These results demonstrate that regulation of fungal ROS metabolism is critical for maintaining the mutualistic interaction between L. bicolor and P. tremula × alba. Introduction: Ropeginterferon alfa-2b is a novel mono-pegylated proline-interferon. This clinical study aimed to evaluate its antiviral efficacy of ropeginterferon alfa-2b against SARS-CoV-2 infection., Methods: This is a multicenter, randomized, open-label study. Adult patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection with initial cycle threshold (Ct) value < 30 and symptom onset within 4 days were enrolled. Eligible patients were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive a single 250-µg dose of ropeginterferon alfa-2b subcutaneously plus standard of care (SOC) or to receive SOC alone. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with a negative RT-PCR result for SARS-CoV-2 or discharged from the hospital before Day 8. Change in clinical status based on the World Health Organization (WHO) clinical progression scale and pulmonary infiltrations through chest radiograph were also evaluated., Results: A total of 132 patients were enrolled and treated with study medication. Higher percentages of patients who achieved Ct ≥ 30 or were discharged from the hospital were observed on Day 8 and every other time point of assessment, i.e., Days 5, 11, 15, and 22, in the ropeginterferon alfa-2b group compared to the SOC alone group. However, the difference was statistically significant on Day 11 but not on Day 8. The primary endpoint was not met. The ropeginterferon alfa-2b group showed a higher improvement rate in lung infiltration on Day 5 (27.6% vs. 0.0%, p = 0.0087) and a higher improvement rate in WHO clinical progression scores on Day 8 (69.4% vs. 35.3%, p = 0.03) than those in the SOC group. No ropeginterferon alfa-2b-related serious adverse event was observed., Conclusion: Our data show that ropeginterferon alfa-2b with SOC shortened the duration of SARS-CoV-2 shedding compared with SOC alone. Nickel-rich layered oxide LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM, x + y + z = 1) is the most promising cathode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. However, conventional synthesis methods are limited by the slow heating rate, sluggish reaction dynamics, high energy consumption, and long reaction time. To overcome these challenges, we first employed a high-temperature shock (HTS) strategy for fast synthesis of the NCM, and the approaching ultimate reaction rate of solid phase transition is deeply investigated for the first time. In the HTS process, ultrafast average reaction rate of phase transition from Ni 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 (OH) 2 to Li- containing oxides is 66.7 (% s -1 ), that is, taking only 1.5 s. An ultrahigh heating rate leads to fast reaction kinetics, which induces the rapid phase transition of NCM cathodes. The HTS-synthesized nickel-rich layered oxides perform good cycling performances (94% for NCM523, 94% for NCM622, and 80% for NCM811 after 200 cycles at 4.3 V). Background: The RECOVERY trial demonstrated that the use of dexamethasone is associated with a 36% lower 28-day mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 on invasive mechanical ventilation. Nevertheless, the optimal timing to start dexamethasone remains uncertain., Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study at National Taiwan University Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan) using propensity score matching to simulate a randomized controlled trial to receive or not to receive early dexamethasone (6 mg/day) during the first 7 days following the onset of symptoms. Treatment was standard protocol-based, except for the timing to start dexamethasone, which was left to physicians' decision. The primary outcome is 28-day mortality. Secondary outcomes include secondary infection within 60 days and fulfilling the criteria of de-isolation within 20 days., Results: A total of 377 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled. Early dexamethasone did not decrease 28-day mortality in all patients (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97-1.10) or in patients who required O2 for severe/critical disease at admission (aOR, 1.05; 95%CI, 0.94-1.18); but is associated with a 24% increase in superinfection in all patients (aOR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.12-1.37) and a 23% increase in superinfection in patients of O2 for several/critical disease at admission (aOR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.02-1.47). Moreover, early dexamethasone is associated with a 42% increase in likelihood of delayed clearance of SARS-CoV-2 virus (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.01-1.98)., Conclusion: An early start of dexamethasone (within 7 days after the onset of symptoms) could be harmful to hospitalized patients with COVID-19., (Copyright © 2024. Background: Patients with hematological malignancies (HM) were at a high risk of developing severe disease from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to assess the clinical outcome of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients with HM., Methods: Adult patients with HM who were hospitalized with a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 between May, 2021 and November, 2022 were retrospectively identified. Primary outcome was respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation or mortality within 60 days after hospitalization. We also analyzed associated factors for de-isolation (defined as defervescence with a consecutive serial cycle threshold value > 30) within 28 days., Results: Of 152 eligible patients, 22 (14.5%) developed respiratory failure or mortality in 60 days. Factors associated with developing respiratory failure that required mechanical ventilation or mortality included receipt of allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) (adjusted hazards ratio [aHR], 5.10; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.64-15.85), type 2 diabetes mellitus (aHR, 2.47; 95% CI, 1.04-5.90), lymphopenia at admission (aHR, 6.85; 95% CI, 2.45-19.15), and receiving <2 doses of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines (aHR, 3.00; 95% CI, 1.19-7.60). Ninety-nine (65.1%) patients were de-isolated in 28 days, against which two hazardous factors were identified: receipt of B-cell depletion therapies within one year prior to COVID-19 (aHR, 0.55, 95% CI, 0.35-0.87) and lymphopenia upon admission (aHR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.43-1.00)., Conclusion: We found a high rate of respiratory failure and mortality among patients with HM who contracted the SARS-CoV-2. Factors associated with developing respiratory failure or mortality in 60 days included receipt of allo-HSCT, type 2 diabetes mellitus and lymphopenia upon admission. Background: The prognosis for people living with HIV (PLWH) who develop lymphomas has been greatly improved by combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) and anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies. However, real-world clinical data on this patient group in Asia are limited., Methods: Treatment outcomes were retrospectively examined for 104 PLWH with lymphomas between 2000 and 2019. The cohort comprised five PLWH with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and 99 with non-Hodgkin lymphomas, including 61 with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), 19 with Burkitt lymphoma (BL), nine with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) and ten with other subtypes., Results: The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were as follows: HL (100%), PCNSL (76.2%), other subtypes (60.0%), BL (57.4%), and DLBCL (55.6%). Individuals who achieved complete response (CR) to front-line therapies had a significantly better 5-year OS rate than those without (96.2% vs. 17.8%, p < 0.001). PLWH who received cART for ≤6 months had significantly lower CD4+ T-cell counts at lymphoma diagnosis than those who received cART for longer periods (p = 0.048). Additionally, the 5-year OS rate was better for PLWH who received cART for ≤6 months before lymphomas diagnosis than those who received cART for longer periods (64.5% vs. 51.9%, p = 0.114)., Conclusions: PLWH with DLBCL or BL had OS rates compatible to patients without HIV infection. Better outcomes for patients achieving CR to front-line therapy and those with shorter cART duration before lymphoma diagnosis suggest an underlying biological distinction in the lymphomas and the involvement of immunity, which warrants further studies., (Copyright © 2024. P-type Fe 3 CoSb 12 -based skutterudite thin films are successfully fabricated, exhibiting high thermoelectric performance, stability, and flexibility at medium-to-high temperatures, based on preparing custom target materials and employing advanced pulsed laser deposition techniques to address the bonding challenge between the thin films and high-temperature flexible polyimide substrates. Through the optimization of fabrication processing and nominal doping concentration of Ce, the thin films show a power factor of >100 μW m -1 K -2 and a ZT close to 0.6 at 653 K. After >2000 bending cycle tests at a radius of 4 mm, only a 6 % change in resistivity can be observed. Additionally, the assembled p-type Fe 3 CoSb 12 -based flexible device exhibits a power density of 135.7 µW cm -2 under a temperature difference of 100 K with the hot side at 623 K. Importance: Helicobacter pylori treatment and nutrition supplementation may protect against gastric cancer (GC), but whether the beneficial effects only apply to potential genetic subgroups and whether high genetic risk may be counteracted by these chemoprevention strategies remains unknown., Objective: To examine genetic variants associated with the progression of gastric lesions and GC risk and to assess the benefits of H pylori treatment and nutrition supplementation by levels of genetic risk., Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study used follow-up data of the Shandong Intervention Trial (SIT, 1989-2022) and China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB, 2004-2018) in China. Based on the SIT, a longitudinal genome-wide association study was conducted to identify genetic variants for gastric lesion progression. Significant variants were examined for incident GC in a randomly sampled set of CKB participants (set 1). Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) combining independent variants were assessed for GC risk in the remaining CKB participants (set 2) and in an independent case-control study in Linqu., Exposures: H pylori treatment and nutrition supplementation., Main Outcomes and Measures: Primary outcomes were the progression of gastric lesions (in SIT only) and the risk of GC. The associations of H pylori treatment and nutrition supplementation with GC were evaluated among SIT participants with different levels of genetic risk., Results: Our analyses included 2816 participants (mean [SD] age, 46.95 [9.12] years; 1429 [50.75%] women) in SIT and 100 228 participants (mean [SD] age, 53.69 [11.00] years; 57 357 [57.23%] women) in CKB, with 147 GC cases in SIT and 825 GC cases in CKB identified during follow-up. A PRS integrating 12 genomic loci associated with gastric lesion progression and incident GC risk was derived, which was associated with GC risk in CKB (highest vs lowest decile of PRS: hazard ratio [HR], 2.54; 95% CI, 1.80-3.57) and further validated in the analysis of 702 case participants and 692 control participants (mean [SD] age, 54.54 [7.66] years; 527 [37.80%] women; odds ratio, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.11-3.05). H pylori treatment was associated with reduced GC risk only for individuals with high genetic risk (top 25% of PRS: HR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.25-0.82) but not for those with low genetic risk (HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.50-1.34; P for interaction = .03). Such effect modification was not found for vitamin (P for interaction = .93) or garlic (P for interaction = .41) supplementation., Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this cohort study indicate that a high genetic risk of GC may be counteracted by H pylori treatment, suggesting primary prevention could be tailored to genetic risk for more effective prevention.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)-based thermoelectric materials, valued for their flexibility, lightweight, and cost-effectiveness, show promise for wearable thermoelectric devices. However, their thermoelectric performance requires significant enhancement for practical applications. To achieve this goal, in this work, we introduce rational "triple treatments" to improve the overall performance of flexible SWCNT-based films, achieving a high power factor of 20.29 µW cm -1  K -2 at room temperature. Ultrasonic dispersion enhances the conductivity, NaBH 4 treatment reduces defects and enhances the Seebeck coefficient, and cold pressing significantly densifies the SWCNT films while preserving the high Seebeck coefficient. Also, bending tests confirm structural stability and exceptional flexibility, and a six-legged flexible device demonstrates a maximum power density of 2996 μW cm -2 at a 40 K temperature difference, showing great application potential. In the evolving landscape of smart libraries, this research pioneers an IoT-based low-cost architecture utilizing Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The increasing demand for more efficient and economical solutions in library management, particularly in the realm of RFID-based processes such as authentication, property circulation, and book loans, underscores the significance of this study. Leveraging the collaborative potential of IoT and SDN technologies, our proposed system introduces a fresh perspective to tackle these challenges and advance intelligent library management. In response to the evolving landscape of smart libraries, our research presents an Internet of Things (IoT)-based low-cost architecture utilizing SDN. The exploration of this architectural paradigm arises from a recognized gap in the existing literature, pointing towards the necessity for more efficient and cost-effective solutions in managing library processes. Our proposed algorithm integrates IoT and SDN technologies to intelligently oversee various library activities, specifically targeting RFID-based processes such as authentication, property circulation management, and book loan management. The system's architecture, encompasses components like the data center, SDN controllers, RFID tags, tag readers, and other network sensors. By leveraging the synergy between RFID and SDN, our innovative approach reduces the need for constant operator supervision in libraries. The scalability and software-oriented nature of the architecture cater to extensive library environments. Our study includes a two-phase investigation, combining practical implementation in a small-scale library with a simulation environment using MATLAB 2021. Background: Concurrent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common in sexually active populations. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and coinfection rates of bacterial STIs among sexually active, HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), and to assess the potential benefits of different combination treatment regimens in managing concurrent bacterial STIs., Methods: From September 2021 to September 2023, HIV-positive MSM underwent STI testing when they had symptoms suggestive of STIs or recently acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection or early syphilis. The oral rinse, rectal swab, and urethral swab specimens were tested for Chlamydia trachomatis , Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Mycoplasma spp., Ureaplasma spp., and Trichomonas vaginalis with the use of multiplex real-time polymerase-chain-reaction assays. The estimated coinfection rates were used to evaluate the benefits of different combination treatment regimens for managing coinfections., Results: During the study period, 535 participants (median age, 37 years; and CD4 count, 615 cells/mm 3 ) were enrolled. On their first visits, at least one bacterial pathogen was detected in 57.9% and concomitant bacterial infections were found in 32.9% of the participants. The most commonly identified pathogen was U. urealyticum (36.3%), followed by C. trachomatis (22.8%), and N. gonorrhoeae (19.8%). The factors associated with any bacterial STIs included older age (per 1-year increase, adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.95-1.00), early syphilis (AOR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.22-2.84), and having more than 5 sex partners in the preceding 3 months (AOR, 2.08, 95% CI, 1.07-4.06). A combination therapy of benzathine penicillin G with a 7-day course of doxycycline could simultaneously treat 27.1% of C. trachomatis coinfections in participants with early syphilis, while a combination therapy of ceftriaxone with doxycycline could simultaneously treat 40.6% of chlamydial coinfections in participants with gonorrhea., Conclusion: Bacterial STIs were prevalent and concomitant infections were not uncommon among sexually active, HIV-positive MSM, supporting regular screening for bacterial STIs. Effective screening and early detection are critical to improve the prognosis of gastric cancer (GC). Our study aims to explore noninvasive multianalytical biomarkers and construct integrative models for preliminary risk assessment and GC detection. Whole genomewide methylation marker discovery was conducted with CpG tandems target amplification (CTTA) in cfDNA from large asymptomatic screening participants in a high-risk area of GC. The methylation and mutation candidates were validated simultaneously using one plasma from patients at various gastric lesion stages by multiplex profiling with Mutation Capsule Plus (MCP). Helicobacter pylori specific antibodies were detected with a recomLine assay. Integrated models were constructed and validated by the combination of multianalytical biomarkers. A total of 146 and 120 novel methylation markers were found in CpG islands and promoter regions across the genome with CTTA. The methylation markers together with the candidate mutations were validated with MCP and used to establish a 133-methylation-marker panel for risk assessment of suspicious precancerous lesions and GC cases and a 49-methylation-marker panel as well as a 144-amplicon-mutation panel for GC detection. An integrated model comprising both methylation and specific antibody panels performed better for risk assessment than a traditional model (AUC, 0.83 and 0.63, P < .001). A second model for GC detection integrating methylation and mutation panels also outperformed the traditional model (AUC, 0.82 and 0.68, P = .005). Our study established methylation, mutation and H. pylori-specific antibody panels and constructed two integrated models for risk assessment and GC screening. From June 2022 to April 2023, 1629 HIV-positive participants were assessed for the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The 10-year ASCVD risk of <5 %, 5 % to <7.5 %, ≥7.5 % to <20 % and ≥20 % were 59.9 %, 14.4 %, 20.7 % and 5.0 %, respectively; 440 (27.0 %) participants met the criteria for statin therapy, but only 171 (38.8 %) were prescribed statins., (Copyright © 2024.
