Abstract

【Objective】 Freezing-thawing and drying-wetting cycles are important abiotic processes in mineral particle weathering and their effect is modulated by many other processes. In this paper, we investigate the impact of particle size and soil salinity on mineral particle weathering. 【Method】 Green slate particles were used. The experiment consisted of three particle size treatments: 10, 20 and 30 mm, and three soil salinity treatments with salt concentration of the soil water being 3, 6 and 10 g/L, respectively. Each treatment was subjected to randomized freeze-thaw and drying-wetting cycles. During the experiment, we measured the weathering rate of all particles. 【Result】 ① Soil salinity increased particle weathering rate, but the increase depended on soil water concentration. In the treatments we compared, soil water concentration of 10 g/L gave the best results. For the10 mm particles, their weathering rate increased with soil salinity when they were subjected to 20 and 60 freeze-thaw and drying-wetting cycles. ② The weathering rate decreased with particle size, with the weathering rate of the 10 mm particles being two times that of the 30 mm particles. ③ The weathering rate increased with the number of freeze-thaw drying -wetting cycles. 【Conclusion】 Under the influence of freeze-thaw and drying-wetting cycles, the weathering rate of small particles is higher than that of large particle. Soil salinity also increased the weathering rate, albeit the increasing rate depended on soil water concentration.

32. The Effects of Wetting-drying Cycles on Degradation of Sands and Gravels Used for Soil Mulching in Ningxia Province

Abstract

【Objective】 Sand and gravel mulching is a technology widely used for crop production in the arid regions in northwestern China. Continuous weathering could result in their degradation; the purpose of this paper is to study the effects of wetting-drying cycles on degradation of gravels and sand used for soil mulching in the arid belt in central Ningxia province. 【Method】 We took lime-green slate - a commonly used gravel and sand for soil mulching - as an example, mimicking wetting-drying cycles in laboratory by spraying. Degradation of the gravels were measured and calculated using SEM and PCAS technologies. 【Result】 ①Large gravels degraded faster than small ones at the early stage, and wetting-drying increased pore connectivity of the gravel mulch. A great number of debris and flocculent minerals were found. ②At the end of wetting-drying cycles, gravel size was proportional to the number of pores and was inversely proportional to the average pore area of the gravels. Wetting-drying increased the uniformity coefficient of the pores by up to 129.4%. The ability of the gravels to adsorb water decreased as the gravel size increased. The crushed sand and gravel in the size range of 0.5~2 mm had the highest water adsorption under water application of 250 and 125 mL, increasing water adsorption by 75.05% and 56.60% respectively, compared to the initial water content. ③At the end of the wetting-drying cycles, the mass loss rate and cumulative mass loss in the sand and gravel were inversely proportional to particle size. Among them, sand and gravel with size in the range of 0.5~2 mm were more sensitive to temperature. Their cumulative mass loss under water application of 250 mL was 27.66% higher than that under water application of 125 mL. 【Conclusion】 Wetting-drying cycles affect degradation of small and compacted sand and gravel more than the large ones. Our results have important implications for improving management of soils mulched by sand and gravel in the arid regions in northwestern China.

34. Association of glycaemic control with intraocular pressure in a large general population: Results from the UK Biobank.

Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the association of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum glucose with intraocular pressure (IOP) in a large UK general population. Materials and Methods: Participants were selected from the UK Biobank, excluding those with eye conditions that may affect IOP. IOP was measured using an ocular response analyser. Goldmann‐correlated IOP (IOPg) and corneal‐compensated IOP (IOPcc) were outcomes of interest, and ocular hypertension was defined as left‐eye IOPg or IOPcc > 21 mmHg. HbA1c and random (non‐fasting) serum glucose were the exposures of interest. Multivariate restricted cubic spline models, as well as linear regression, were applied to explore the associations of interest. Results: Among 68 806 participants (46.5% male), the mean age was 56.7 years. The mean (standard deviation) for IOPg was 15.7 (3.6) mmHg and 15.9 (3.6) mmHg for IOPcc. Occular hypertension was prevalent in 8055 participants (11.7%) and 4178 participants (6.1%) had diabetes. Those with diabetes had higher IOP and a higher prevalence of ocular hypertension. After adjustment for demographic and clinical variables, HbA1c was positively associated with IOP in participants with diabetes, but not in those without diabetes. For every 10‐mmol/mol increase in HbA1c, IOPg increased by 0.20 mmHg (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.12, 0.28) and IOPcc by 0.15 mmHg (95% CI 0.07, 0.23); the odds of ocular hypertension was increased by 6% (95% CI 1.00, 1.13) in participants with diabetes. A borderline positive association between serum glucose and IOP was found only in participants without diabetes. Conclusions: Impaired glycaemic control was associated with elevated IOP and a possible risk of ocular hypertension among participants with diabetes but of normal ocular health. Abstract

In the field of civil engineering, the utilization of bio-based composites is a viable solution for promoting environmentally friendly practices. A novel bio-based inorganic-bonded bamboo composite (InorgBam) prepared with roller-pressing impregnation, cold pressing, and molding technology was first introduced, and 72 double-shear specimens were tested to investigate the load-carrying performance of InorgBam single-bolted connections. The failure characteristics of the InorgBam single-bolted connections were evaluated using the European yield model (EYM). By incorporating the existing bilinear and Attiogbe models, the load-displacement relationship of the InorgBam single-bolted connections was foretasted with precision. The effect of bolt diameter and component thickness on load-bearing capacity was compared, and relevant design suggestions were proposed. Prediction equations of load-bearing capacity for timber connections in existing standards were briefly reviewed and compared with the test results to illustrate their applicability for InorgBam connections. Comparison results indicated that the equations for timbers exhibited an adequate safety redundancy for the InorgBam. Finally, a simplified equation was proposed based on nonlinear fitting that aims to provide a convenient approach to design activities for InorgBam bolted connections and promote the structural application of InorgBam material. High-voltage pulsed radio frequency (H-PRF) is a new method for treating ZAP with pulse voltages above 60 V or even up to 100 V. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of H-PRF in the management of ZAP. Methods. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library were searched from their inception to June 2022 to identify controlled trials which evaluated the effectiveness of H-PRF compared with standard PRF and sham operations. The primary outcome was pain scores at different treatment times. The secondary outcomes included SF-36 scores, rescue analgesic dose, and side effects. Results. We reviewed 6 randomized controlled trials involving 428 patients. There was no significant difference between the H-PRF and standard PRF pain scores at 1 week after surgery and the sham operation group at 1 month. At 1, 3, and 6 months, the H-PRF group had better pain score than the standard PRF group, and at 3 months, the pain score was better than the sham operation group. The H-PRF group showed improvement in the SF-36 score, and there were no significant complications in the H-PRF group. Conclusions. H-PRF is an effective and safe treatment method that has better effects in relieving pain and improving the quality of life and physical and mental health. Although H-PRF provides pain relief rates comparable to those of the control group in the early stages, it remains the preferred and alternative treatment for relieving herpes zoster-related pain.

Abstract

Site-selective protein modification is a key step in facilitating protein functionalization and manipulation. To accomplish this, genetically engineered proteins were previously required, but the procedure was laborious, complex, and technically challenging. Herein we report the development of aptamer-based recognition-then-reaction to guide site-selective protein/DNA conjugation in a single step with outstanding selectivity and efficiency. As models, several proteins, including human thrombin, PDGF-BB, Avidin, and His-tagged recombinant protein, were studied, and the results showed excellent selectivity under mild reaction conditions. Taking advantage of aptamers as recognition elements with extraordinary selectivity and affinity, this simple preparation method can tag a protein in a complex milieu. Thus, with the aptamer obtained from cell-SELEX, real-time modification of live-cell membrane proteins can be achieved in one step without any pre-treatment.

Abstract

Bioconjugation based on crosslinking primary amines to carboxylic acid groups has found broad applications in protein modification, drug development, and nanomaterial functionalization. However, proteins, which are made up of amino acids, typically give nonselective bioconjugation when using primary amine-based crosslinking. In order to control protein orientation and activity after conjugation, selective bioconjugation is desirable. We herein report an efficient and cysteine-selective thiol-ene click reaction-based bioconjugation strategy using colloidal nanoparticles. The resulting thiol-ene based aptamer and enzyme nanoconjugates demonstrated excellent target binding ability and enzymatic activity, respectively. Thus, thiol-ene click chemistry can provide a stable and robust crosslinker in a biocompatible manner for bioconjugation of any thiol-containing biomolecule with nanomaterials. This will open more opportunities for applications of thiol-ene reactions and functional colloidal nanoparticles in chemical biology.
