11. Polarization measurement of Cs using the pump laser beam

Abstract

In the optical pumping systems based on the pump-probe arrangement, the spin polarization of the atoms is generally monitored utilizing the probe laser beam, in which way an extra perturbation must be introduced and thus affects the normal operation of the sensors. By investigating the absorption rate of the circularly polarized pump laser, here we demonstrate the feasibility of extracting the electron-spin polarization from the transmitted pump laser intensity. We experimentally validate the method in a spin-exchange relaxation free (SERF) magnetometer and the results are in excellent agreement with the theory. The scheme operates in a silent mode and features a real-time observation. We also study the corresponding magnetic field response of the SERF magnetometer and a term arising from the diffusion effects has been added to the original model to explain the discrepancy of the response., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn due to the data update

15. Photocatalytic splitting of water on g-C3N4-based single-atom Pt catalysts with stable "sandwich" structure: a combined first principles and semi-empirical investigation.

Abstract

Solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion is a promising strategy to solve environmental pollution and energy crisis by utilizing photocatalytic water splitting. In this work, a "sandwich" structure of g-C3N4-based single-atom platinum (Pt) catalyst for photocatalytic water splitting is proposed and investigated using a combined first principles and semi-empirical study method. The calculation results indicate that, without any co-catalyst, the photogenerated holes in the valence band of BL-g-C3N4 cannot oxidize H2O to O2, and its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is not better than that of the pristine monolayer g-C3N4. Significantly, the photogenerated holes in the valence band of the "sandwich"-structured photocatalyst g-C3N4–Pt1–g-C3N4 can oxidize H2O to O2 without any co-catalyst. That is, the OER performance of g-C3N4–Pt1–g-C3N4 is better than that of the pristine g-C3N4 and the pristine bilayer-g-C3N4 (BL-g-C3N4). However, it can be found that the introduction of single Pt atom confinement in the BL-g-C3N4 cannot effectively reduce hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) energy barrier or improve the hydrogen evolution kinetics of BL-g-C3N4. In other words, the introduction of the confined single Pt atom in the BL-g-C3N4 not only fails to improve HER performance of BL-g-C3N4, but deteriorates HER catalytic performance of BL-g-C3N4. Abstract

The application of highly filled composites is limited by their poor processing and rheological properties due to the high loading of fillers. One possible solution to this problem is to use maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) with high melt index as compatibilizer and lubricant. Herein, magnesium hydroxide (MH)/linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites with 60 wt% of MH were prepared using MAPP with three different melt flow indexes (MFI). The equilibrium torque and melt flow index tests show that the addition of MAPP with high MFI significantly improves the processability and flowability of MH/MAPP/LLDPE composites. The rheological studies show that it also leads to a substantial reduction in the viscosity and therefore MH/MAPP/LLDPE composites exhibit more solid‐like responses. The scanning electron microscopy shows that a transition layer is formed at the MH‐LLDPE interface. The flame retardancy test shows that the addition of MAPP slightly reduces the flame retardancy of the composites as evidenced by the reduced limiting oxygen index and increased total heat release. Cone calorimeter test shows that the simultaneous addition of MH and MAPP has a synergistic smoke suppression effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polycrystalline ZnS samples with a slight composition fluctuation are grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, and their optical and mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated in detail. The CVD samples present a maximum transmittance of ∼73% in the 7–10 μm region. By changing the sulfur content, a maximum Knoop hardness of 2.375 GPa was found in the Zn50.06S49.94 sample, while Zn46.84S53.16 presents a high flexural strength of 133.8 MPa. The microstructural origin of this abnormal changing of mechanical properties was discussed according to the results of micrographs, XRD patterns and Raman spectra. The results suggest that beside the main phase of zincblende, a small amount of wurtzite is existed. This composited microstructure is responsible for the higher hardness and strength of CVD ZnS.
