Abstract

Numerous studies are conducted to explain the various effects of Ta addition on the structure, coercivity, as well as the other magnetic properties of the melt-spun Sm[Co.sub.7-x][Ta.sub.x] ribbons. An increase in the Ta concentration is shown to lead to a sharp enhancement in the intrinsic coercivity of the ribbons.

Abstract

A scanning electron microscope is used for studying the fracture behavior and micromechanism of the experimental magnets and the impact stability of rare-earth permanent magnets (REPM) is examined by using a falling-weight impact tester and an impact-acceleration standard device based on laser interference method. The impact stability has increased from 2.5*[10.sup.4] g for the ordinary magnet specimens to 11*[10.sup.4]g for the strengthened and roughened specimens and it is shown that Ti-doping has decreased the Vickers-hardness [H.sub.v].

Abstract

The Al and C codoping effect on the structures and superconductivity in Mg[B.sub.2] is studied by using first-principles calculations. The studies have shown that the observed decrease in the high critical temperature for the codoped Mg[B.sub.2] is understood in terms of a band filling effect due to the electron doping by both Al and C.

The effect of the La doping on the structure and on the ferroelectric, dielectric and magnetic properties of BiFe[O.sub.3] is studied. Doping with La has increased the ferromagnetic moment, due to the broken cycloid spin structure caused by the changes in the crystalline structure.

Abstract

The phase evolution, microstructure, and magnetic properties of [Pr.sub.x][Fe.sub.80-x][Ti.sub.2][Co.sub.10][B.sub.4][C.sub.4] (x = 9, 10.5) melt-spun ribbons are analyzed. The refined structure has enhanced the exchange-coupling interaction between magnetic grains, which has improved the demagnetization-curve shape and the maximum energy product for the ribbons accordingly.

29. Microstructural analysis of tool failure progression during dry milling of Ti–6Al–4V alloy using coated carbide tools

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the failure progression of coated carbide tools in micro-scale during milling of Ti–6Al–4V alloy. An experimental investigation was conducted and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with X-ray spectroscopy has been used to analyze the microstructure and compositional characterization of worn tool inserts. The experimental results revealed that coating delamination of the cutting edge was the first stage in the failure process of coated carbide cutting tools. As cutting process proceeds, coating delamination was found to extend to the rake face and flank face. Brittle “Co-poor” region was observed on both the rake face and flank face due to cobalt diffusion after coating delamination and cutting speed significantly promotes the process of cobalt diffusion. A strong correlation exists between cracks initiation and cobalt diffusion. Cracks initiation and propagation were identified as the main reason of brittle fracture for coated carbide tools at high cutting speeds.

Abstract

The electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of Bi2Te3 single crystals and graphene-doped Bi2Te3 polycrystalline samples were investigated with the aid of first-principles calculations, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Rietveld refinement, and thermal and transport measurements. It was found that the p electrons from the Bi and Te atoms are responsible for the density of states near the Fermi level. Experimental results show that the graphene-doped Bi2Te3 exhibits lower thermal conductivity and has a higher figure-of-merit than the single crystals.
