Abstract

This document provides DESIRA's third set of practice abstracts (PAs) which is a compilation of seven PAs. Those PAs are based on the experiences, lessons learned, project actions and reporting of the WP3 activities that aimed at the development of scenarios and showcasing of technologies building on the concept of digital game changers. Tasks 3.5 'Use Case development' and 3.6 'Showcase Technologies', are the main contributing project tasks that provided concrete results on which these seven PAs, cited in this report, are based. The first five PAs provide a concise description of five use cases that were developed during the second period of the DESIRA project. An array of conducted activities inside the boundaries of five preselected Living Labs, and with the participation of those LL's stakeholders, were planned so that WP3 could culminate in the development of five technology adoption use cases. The last two PAs of this report, supplement the five aforementioned use case PAs by showcasing two additional promising technology solutions that have the potential to contribute to sustainable digital transition pathways, as those are defined by the DESIRA's theoretical framework and as reflected by the examined agro-rural-forestry settings of this project. For a thorough and detailed analysis of the methodology, activities, and outcomes that contributed to the production of the use cases and showcase technology reports, it is recommended the reading of deliverables D3.3 'Use Cases Report' and D3.4 'Showcase Technology Report' which are the foundation documents on which this deliverable is based on.

Abstract

This document describes a toolkit designed within the DESIRA project to support the work in the 20 Living Labs. This toolkit is composed of several parts: the inventory of digital tools, the set of application scenarios as derived from the inventory, a list of digital technologies with the potential of being digital game changers (DGCs), and a map of plausible socio-economic impacts associated with the selected potential DGCs. Several experts' interviews have been performed to enrich and support the toolkit.

Abstract

The visual cortex is located in the occipital cortex in the rearmost portion of the brain. Lesions in the visual cortex result in functional blindness in the portion of the visual field served by that portion of the brain, but research has shown that patients retain the ability to detect and orient their eyes towards some stimuli even with the functionally blind area. The human visual system is organized so that each hemisphere receives visual input from both eyes. The left hemisphere receives visual input corresponding to the right visual field from both eyes, and conversely for the right hemisphere. Therefore, one would expect a patient whose hemisphere has been removed to be functionally blind in the opposite visual field. This is precisely what is observed. However, such patients do retain the ability to detect objects in the blind area and orient to them. Researchers have evaluated this ability in four hemispherectomized patients. Three patients had their left hemispheres removed and one the right. The patients were shown visual stimuli with a variety of characteristics. With few exceptions, the patients were able to say whether or not a stimulus had been presented, although they could not determine the nature of the stimulus. When moving stimuli were presented, the patients differed in their ability to distinguish between different rates of movement. Although some discrimination between different velocities could be accomplished, this task was more difficult for the patients than the mere detection of stimuli in their blind area. The available evidence suggests that this ability to respond to stimuli in an apparently blind visual field arises from the superior colliculus. The paired colliculi, which sit on top of the mesencephalon in the brain, receive input from both the retina and the visual cortex. These structures are related to the tectum in more primitive classes of animals, and in these creatures are responsible for virtually all visual function. In the human, they play a role in some of the more mechanical aspects of vision. When a portion of the visual cortex is damaged, the corresponding area of the superior colliculi remains intact and continues to play its role in vision, even though the area of visual space served is functionally blind. Abstract

In questo saggio vengono esaminati gli effetti di ampie manovre di politica di bilancio, ovvero di un consolidamento e di uno stimolo fiscale nei diciotto stati membri dell’Eurozona, in un periodo di riferimento che va dal 1980 al 2015. L’evidenza empirica dimostra che nel caso di uno stimolo fiscale, una riduzione della pressione fiscale e un aumento della spesa pubblica in conto capitale generano un aumento del tasso di crescita economica e un miglioramento dei conti pubblici, mentre l’aumento della spesa corrente ha effetti opposti. Nel caso di un consolidamento fiscale, una riduzione della spesa pubblica corrente rispetto a un aumento della pressione fiscale è più efficace nel comportare un aumento del tasso di crescita economica. Tali risultati sono confermati attraverso studi di regressione. Il tema oggetto d’analisi è quanto mai attuale e si inquadra in un filone di ricerca piuttosto recente, che si arricchisce costantemente di nuovi spunti e suggestioni. I risultati possono essere particolarmente utili stante le conclamate difficoltà che l’UME sta attraversando nel riprendere un sentiero di crescita “virtuosa”. In particolare, essi assumono un rilievo particolare per i PIGS, le cui economie sono affette da “vizi” di lungo periodo.

34. Two-stage reimplantation in periprosthetic knee infection.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The increasing number of total knee arthroplasties performed yearly worldwide has resulted in a concomitant rise in bacterial infections. Two-stage reimplantation has been reported as the most successful method of treating periprosthetic knee infections. The purpose of this study was to describe all the phases of the two-stage reimplantation and to review the literature regarding the topic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Most significant and recent papers about the management of periprosthetic knee infection through a two-stage reimplantation protocol were carefully analysed and reviewed. Our personal experience, previously published, with two-stage-reimplantation protocol was also briefly reported. RESULTS: Two-stage reimplantation has been reported as the most successful method of treating periprosthetic knee infections. The strategy of using an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer and intravenous antibiotics with delayed exchange arthroplasty is actually considered the state-of-the-art, with a reported success rate of 88-96%. The two-stage protocol has been reported as a viable option also for patients with a periprosthetic knee infection by multidrug-resistant organisms. On the other hand, open debridement with polyethylene exchange and single-stage reimplantation have been reported effective only in selective case series involving acute infections by low-virulence organisms. CONCLUSIONS: The strategy that involves the use of cement spacer, intravenous antibiotic therapy, and successive revision total knee implantation is nowadays considered the gold standard for the management of the periprosthetic knee infection. This treatment is actually considered the first choice not only for chronic but also for acute infections, especially in the presence of resistant bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This investigation examines how neighboring neurons of area 18 react when area 17 inputs are excited or depressed. In anesthetized cats, area 18 responses to a sine-wave grating in the receptive field were analyzed, while a second grating was positioned in its periphery and responses were recorded in area 17. This latter site was also inactivated with GABA. A waveform template process sorted out at least two individual, neighboring cells with similar orientation preferences in area 18. These cells frequently displayed opposite reactions to stimulation and inactivation in area 17. Experiments suggest that nearby neurons belonging to the same functional domain in the visual cortex may simultaneously carry disparate information.

45. Impact of the spatial congruence of redundant targets on within-modal and cross-modal integration

Abstract

Although the topic of sensory integration has raised increasing interest, the differing behavioral outcome of combining unisensory versus multisensory inputs has surprisingly only been scarcely investigated. In the present experiment, observers were required to respond as fast as possible to (1) lateralized visual or tactile targets presented alone, (2) double stimulation within the same modality or (3) double stimulation across modalities. Each combination was either delivered within the same hemispace (spatially aligned) or in different hemispaces (spatially misaligned). Results show that the redundancy gains (RG) obtained from the cross-modal conditions were far greater than those obtained from combinations of two visual or two tactile targets. Consistently, we observed that the reaction time distributions of cross-modal targets, but not those of within-modal targets, surpass the predicted reaction time distribution based on the summed probability distributions of each constituent stimulus presented alone. Moreover, we found that the spatial alignment of the targets did not influence the RG obtained in cross-modal conditions, whereas within-modal stimuli produced a greater RG when the targets where delivered in separate hemispaces. These results suggest that within-modal and cross-modal integration are not only distinguishable by the amount of facilitation they produce, but also by the spatial configuration under which this facilitation occurs. Our study strongly supports the notion that estimates of the same event that are more independent produce enhanced integrative gains.

Abstract

Evolutionary concepts such as adaptation and maladaptation have been used by neuroscientists to explain brain properties and mechanisms. In particular, one of the most compelling characteristics of the brain, known as neuroplasticity, denotes the ability of the brain to continuously adapt its functional and structural organization to changing requirements. Although brain plasticity has evolved to favor adaptation, there are cases in which the same mechanisms underlying adaptive plasticity can turn into maladaptive changes. Here, we will consider brain plasticity and its functional and structural consequences from an evolutionary perspective, discussing cases of adaptive and maladaptive plasticity and using examples from typical and atypical development. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

For humans, the localization of an odorant seems only possible if the odorant also stimulates the trigeminal nerve. There is,however, some evidence that active sniffing may affect this ability and facilitate the localization of pure odorants. Therefore, we tested the ability of 40 subjects to localize a pure odorant and a mixed olfactory/trigeminal stimulus under 2 stimulation conditions: either odors were blown into the subjects’ nostrils (passive) or subjects had to actively sniff the odors (active). Subjects could only reliably localize the mixed olfactory/trigeminal stimulus. However, we found a significant interaction between stimulation condition and nature of the odorant. So, the mixed olfactory/trigeminal stimulus was more localizable in the passive condition, whereas the pure odorant was better localized in the active condition. Interestingly, subjects had more correct answers after stimulation of the right nostril than of the left nostril (where subjects performed significantly below chance when stimulated with the pure odorant), suggesting possible laterality effects. These results suggest that active sniffing may affect our ability to localize odors. Other than mixed olfactory trigeminal stimuli, pure odorants are, however, not localizable even in active condition of sniffing.
