Abstract

A search for rare lepton decays of the eta meson was performed using the WASA detector at CELSIUS. Two candidates for double Dalitz decay eta->e+e-e+e- events are reported with a background of 1.3+/-0.2 events. This allows to set an upper limit to the branching ratio of 9.7E-5 (90% CL). The branching ratio for the decay eta->e+e-gamma is determined to (7.8+/-0.5 stat+/-0.8 syst)E-3. An upper limit (90% CL) for the branching ratio for the eta->e+e- decay is 2.7E-5 and a limit for the sum of the eta->mu+mu-mu+mu- and eta->pi+pi-mu+mu- decays is 3.6E-4., Comment: 9 pages, 10 Postscript figures, uses revtex4.sty, revised version after referee comments; conclusions unchanged

Abstract

Experimental data from the reaction close to threshold have been used to investigate time-dependent properties of the WASA pellet target and the stored beam of 892.8 MeV protons in the CELSIUS accelerator. The detection of 3He ions in solid-state detectors provides an excellent almost background free trigger for η production. Pellet interactions with the surrounding material and with the beam lead to evaporation of deuterium gas into the beam pipe. Approximately 30% of the registered η decay events are due to interactions in deuterium gas outside the pellets. Due to beam–target interaction the beam is transversely heated and appears to acquire a component of a slightly lower energy.

Abstract

A new method is proposed to search for highly excited states of light nuclei. Quite narrow resonance states of 6He are found in the system of two tritons at E x1 = 15.8 ± 0.6 MeV with Γ1 = 1.1 ± 0.6 MeV and at E x2 = 20.9 ± 0.3 MeV with Γ2 = 3.2 ± 1.5 MeV. In addition, an indication of the existence of a state at E x3 = 31.1 ± 1.0 MeV with Γ3 = 6.9 ± 2.3 MeV is obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Experimental searches for the superheavy hydrogen isotope 7H were performed in reactions involving the absorption of stopped π − mesons on 9Be and 11B nuclei. In the reaction 9Be( π −, pp) X, the missing-mass spectrum shows evidence for the formation of 7H states, that of E r = 16 ± 1 MeV and Γ ≅ 2 MeV and that of E r = 21 ± 1 MeV and Γ ≅ 5 MeV ( E r is the resonance energy with respect to breakup into a trition and four neutrons, and Γ is the observed level width). A zero-degree spectrometer for tagging η mesons on the CELSIUS/WASA facility is described, and its characteristics are presented. Tagging of η mesons is performed by detecting ³He ions produced by reaction pd → ³Heη close to the production threshold. A search for deeply bound pionic states of xenon produced in the 136Xe(d, 3He)135Xeπ-bound reaction at Ed = 500 MeV is reported. The population of the 1s pionic-atom state of 135Xe is observed on the predicted level of the cross section ∼40 μb/sr.
