Background Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is effective in the treatment of sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI) /acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, the lack of standard and uniform outcome indicators in the design of most published clinical trials makes it difficult to combine and compare the results of similar studies, causing the impossibility of generating high-quality evidence to guide clinical decision-making. Objective To analyze the use of outcome indicators in randomized controlled trials on TCM for sepsis-induced ALI/ARDS from 2017 to 2022. Methods CNKI, Wanfang Data, SinoMed, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched for RCTs on sepsis-induced ALI/ARDS, with the intervention group treated with TCM combined with other drugs or conventional treatment, and no restrictions in the control group. The ROB.2 tool of the Cochrane Review Group was used to assess the quality of literature and the classification of outcome indicators was summarized. Results 39 papers were included after screening, including 1 (2.56%) with low risk of bias, 3 (7.69%) with high risk of bias and 35 (89.74%) with concerns of bias. The outcome indicators in 5 RCTs were reported with a quality score of ≥5, indicating the complete reporting of outcome indicators. A total of 106 outcome indicators were reported and used for 443 times, including physicochemical testing outcome (55 types, 51.89%), TCM syndrome/sign outcome (2 types, 1.89%), symptom and syndrome outcome (13 types, 12.26%), long-term prognosis outcome (19 types, 17.92%), quality of life outcome (7 types, 6.60%), safety event outcome (8 types, 7.55%) and economic evaluation outcome (2 types, 1.89%). There were four outcome indicators with utilization rate>50%, including oxygenation index (82.05%), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation Scoring System (58.97%), mechanical ventilation duration (51.28%) and interleukin-6 (51.28%). The composite outcome indicators of effective rate or TCM syndrome efficacy were used in 21 papers, involving a total of 12 times of effective rate, TCM syndrome score of 8 times and TCM symptom efficacy of 6 times. The total 106 outcome indicators were summarized and categorized sequentially including overall evaluation indicators (36 types, 33.96%), common indicators (36 types, 33.96%) and different focus indicators (34 types, 32.08%) . Conclusion At present, the selection of outcome indicators in RCTs on TCM for sepsis-induced ALI/ARDS is still nonstandard, mainly manifests in unclear differentiation between primary and secondary outcome indicators, trivialization of endpoint indicators, lack of follow-up data and characteristic indicators of TCM. A core outcome set of TCM outcome indicators for septic induced ALI/ARDS should be constructed to promote the high-quality development of TCM in the future.

Under atmospheric pressure, KOH or HCl solution was added to the butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) oxidation system to adjust the pH, and the oxidative consumption of BHT was monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). To investigate the oxidation properties of BHT under pressurized conditions, the temperature and pressure changes during the oxidation process were monitored using the mini-closed pressure vessel test (MCPVT). The oxidation products of BHT were characterized after crystallization and purification and the possible oxidation pathway was speculated. The results showed that under atmospheric pressure, the degradation rate of BHT was less than 5% when the pH was 4 or 6, indicating good stability. At pH 10, the degradation rate of BHT was up to 59% and the oxidation reaction was rapid. KOH and HCl decreased the initial oxidation temperature of BHT from 133.1 ℃ to 53.0 ℃ and 49.1 ℃ in a pressurized closed container, respectively. 2, 6-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroperoxy-4-methyl-2, 5-cyclohexanedione and 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-4-(3, 5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2, 5-cyclohexadien-1-one were produced during the oxidation of BHT in both atmospheric alkaline and pressurized environments. The experimental results suggested that BHT was susceptible to oxidative degradation in alkaline and pressurized environments, producing toxic products, posing safety risks.

Abstract Oxidative stress is preferentially treated as a risk factor for the development and progression of osteoporosis. Corynoline as a component of Corydalis bungeana Turcz presents antioxidative and anti‐inflammatory properties. In the present study, the effects of Corynoline on osteoblasts following hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)‐induced injury were evaluated accompanied by the investigation of the molecular mechanisms involved. It was found that Corynoline downregulated the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and restored the osteogenic potential of the disrupted osteoblasts by H2O2 exposure. Furthermore, Corynoline was revealed to activate the Nrf2/HO‐1 signaling pathway, while ML385 (an Nrf2 inhibitor) would prevent the Corynoline‐mediated positive effects on the disrupted osteoblasts. In terms of the animal experiments, Corynoline treatment contributed to a significantly alleviated bone loss. These findings indicate that Corynoline may significantly attenuate the H2O2‐induced oxidative damage of osteoblasts via the Nrf2/HO‐1 signaling pathway, providing novel insights to the development of treatments for osteoporosis induced by oxidative injury.

The development of nanoporous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of effectively separating and purifying CH4 is of significant importance. High surface polarity and suitable pore diameter are two key factors that can synergistically enhance separation performance. Herein, we report two hydroxyl-functionalized Al-MOFs (CAU-1-OH and CAU-1-(OH)2) for the separation and purification of natural gas. They both possess two different types of nanocages as well as a densely hydroxyl-functionalized surface. Significantly, CAU-1-(OH)2 demonstrated exceptional selectivity in separating C3H8/CH4 (50:50, v/v) and C2H6/CH4 (50:50, v/v), with selectivity values of 990 and 36, respectively, surpassing those of most reported porous materials. The dynamic breakthrough experiment of the ternary mixture can generate pure CH4 exceeding 3.46 mmol g–1, which adequately demonstrates the actual CH4 purification performance of CAU-1-(OH)2. Finally, molecular simulations and in situ infrared experiments verified that the high surface polarity and suitable pore diameter synergistically enhance the affinity of the frameworks toward C3H8 and C2H6, giving rise to the high loading capacity and selectivity for C3H8 and C2H6. These results support the significant potential of the double hydroxyl-modified nanomaterial CAU-1-(OH)2 for purifying methane from natural gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To study a new method for establishing animal models of prenatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), we used lung ultrasound score (LUS) to semi-quantitatively assess the severity of lung lesions in model rats. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was injected into the right lung of the fetus of the rat under ultrasound-guided, and the right lung of the neonates were scanning for LUS. Specimens were collected for pathological scoring and detection of pulmonary surfactant-associated glycoprotein (SP)-C and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression quantity. The correlation between LUS and pathological scores was analyzed. (1) The animal models were consistent with the pathological manifestations of BPD. (2) It showed a strong positive correlation between LUS and pathological scores in animal models (r = 0.84, P < 0.005), and the expression quantity of SP-C and VEGF in lung tissue were decreased (both P < 0.05). Animal models established by ultrasound-guided puncture of the lung of rats and injection of LPS were consistent with the manifestation of BPD. This method could be used to establish animal models of BPD before birth, and the severity of BPD could be assessed by using LUS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Frailty in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the frailty status of community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan using the Kihon Checklist (KCL) and explore associations with demographic, physiological, and functional factors. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 278 community-dwelling older adults were classified as robust, prefrail, or frail based on their KCL scores. Participants underwent physical fitness assessments including muscle strength and endurance tests, walking speed tests, and flexibility tests. One-way ANOVA and logistic regression analyses were used to examine differences and associations between frailty status and physical fitness indicators. Results: 36% of participants were robust, 47.1% prefrail, and 16.9% frail. The robust group significantly outperformed the prefrail and frail groups in the 30 s sit-to-stand test, 2.44 m sit-to-walk test, and walking speed (p < 0.001). The 2.44 m sit-to-walk test was a significant predictor of prefrailty (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.02–1.36) after adjusting for other physical fitness indicators. Conclusions: Lower limb functional capacity, particularly in the 2.44 m sit-to-walk test, was significantly associated with pre-frailty among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Early screening, the classification of frailty by the Kihon Checklist, and targeted interventions focusing on lower limb strength, endurance, and mobility are crucial for preventing and delaying frailty progression in older populations. 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) is an excellent antioxidant that is easily oxidized to 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroperoxyl-4-methyl-2,5-cyclohexadienone (BHTOOH). For the safety of BHT production and usage, it is meaningful to study the thermal stability and decomposition properties of BHT and BHTOOH. In this paper, the thermal decomposition properties of BHT and BHTOOH were compared by the mini closed pressure vessel test (MCPVT) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their kinetics of thermal decomposition were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal decomposition products of BHT and BHTOOH were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The results show that there was no significant change in temperature pressure when BHT was warmed up under a nitrogen atmosphere, indicating that BHT was stable within 400 K. The thermal decomposition reaction of BHTOOH was rapid with an initial reaction temperature of 375.2 K. The initial exothermic temperature (Ti) and heat release (QDSC) of DSC were 384.9 K and 865.0 J g−1, respectively. The apparent activation energies (Ea) for the thermal decomposition reactions of BHT and BHTOOH calculated by the Kissinger method were 151.8 kJ mol−1 and 66.07 kJ mol−1, respectively. The main decomposition products of BHT were isobutene and 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol. The thermal decomposition products of BHTOOH included BHT, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-ethylphenol, 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 4,4′-(1,2-ethanediyl) bis [2,6-bis (1,1-dimethylethyl) phenol, etc. Based on the thermal decomposition behavior and products, the reaction pathway has been described. These results indicate that BHT is a potential thermal hazard during production, storage and application. For the safety of the chemical industry, the oxidation of BHT should be avoided. The Western Sichuan Plateau (WSP), located in the eastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, is the most strongly deformed region of the continental crust in China. Frequent tectonic movements shape the unique topography and landform of the WSP and have also produced abundant geological heritage resources. Based on the existing geological heritage survey data in Sichuan Province, the nearest index analysis method of employing a regional spatial point model was used to reveal the distribution rules and the genetic mechanism of typical geological relics in the WSP for the first time. Results indicate that the formation and distribution of geological relics in the WSP are generally controlled by tectonic movement and supplemented by the comprehensive action of external forces such as flowing water. Their distribution shows a condensed spatial distribution pattern and extends along the strike of a fault zone and river strike strip. Finally, based on the characteristics of geological relics in the WSP, some suggestions on the protection and development of regional geological relics were put forward.

This study addresses disposable medical mask (DMM) environmental issues through recycling polypropylene fibers. Polypropylene fibers were collected from DMMs, artificially crush them, and enhance fiber–cement interaction via advanced Fenton oxidation. Analysis (Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, x‐ray photoelectron spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE‐SEM), energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectrometer, atomic force microscope, contact angle) confirms successful FeOOH grafting onto M‐DMM fibers, increasing roughness and wettability. Compared with DMM fibers, the surface free energy of M‐DMM fibers increased by 46.3%. Consequently, the grafting of FeOOH onto the fiber surface improves the physical friction and interlocking effects between the fibers and cement. FE‐SEM results after 28 days of curing reveal that M‐DMM fibers exhibit better bonding ability with cement compared with unmodified DMM fibers. Mechanical tests unequivocally demonstrated the enhanced impact resistance of the cement mortar incorporating M‐DMM fibers compared to the reference. Specifically, there was a significant 16.0% increase at 7 days of curing, followed by an additional 4.5% improvement after 28 days of curing. This study provides an eco‐friendly solution for addressing the post‐pandemic surge in DMM waste, reducing microplastic pollution, and lowering disposal costs. Background/Aims: Fish is a protein-rich food and is increasingly favored by consumers. It has been well recognized that the flesh composition of fish is closely related to its maturation and growth stage, but few studies have explored these differences. Additionally, hormone residues in fish after artificial induction of reproduction also attract consumer concern. In this study, we attempt to address these concerns by using a combination of transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses to identify key regulated pathways, genes, and metabolites that may affect the flesh nutrition of one typical aquaculture species in China, blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala). Methods: The four groups of fish were used for transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses, including one-year-old immature (group I), two-year-old immature (group II), two-year-old mature (group III) and successfully spawned (group IV) female M. amblycephala after artificial induction of reproduction. Results: We identified a total of 1460 differential compounds and 1107 differentially expressed unigenes in muscle among the different groups. Differential metabolites related to fish age (group II vs group I, group III vs group I) were largely enriched in “Glycerophospholipid metabolism”, “Linoleic acid metabolism”, “α-Linolenic acid metabolism”, and “Biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids”. Between these two pairwise comparisons, metabolites that are beneficial to human health, such as docosapentaenoic acid, α-Linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid were found to be significantly decreased in two-year-old (group II, group III) compared with one-year-old (group I) M. amblycephala. Only one differential metabolite related to fish maturation, a triglyceride, was detected between groups III and II. Transcriptomics data showed that differently expressed genes (between group III vs group II, group III vs group I) related to maturation were highly enriched in “Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs)”, “Sphingolipid metabolism” and “Phagosome”. DEGs (between group II vs group I, group III vs group I) relating to fish age were enriched in the “cGMP-PKG signaling pathway”, “FoxO signaling pathway”, and “AMPK signaling pathway”. The gene-metabolite interaction network showed pivotal genes, including fumarate hydratase and GNPAT, which played a major role in the regulation of glycerphospholipid metabolism. The nutritional components were also measured, which verified the metabolomics results. Moreover, the metabolomics results showed that after 24 hours of artificial hormone injection, the drug was completely metabolized. Conclusion: Integrated analysis demonstrated that the nutrition value of fish fillet was much more related to fish age compared with maturation status in M. amblycephala females.

Due to the poor growth rate of the Taiwan black (TB) goat in Taiwan, many exotic breeds were brought into breeding schemes to improve TB goat. However, the excessive cross-breeding of alien species with TB goat has decreased its population numbers, genetic variation and biodiversity. Therefore, TB goat population considered an endemic species in Taiwan that needed to be conservation. The objective of the present study was to analyze the genetic structure and TB goat using genetic markers for genetic improvement and to sustain germplasm conservation and utilization. 15 microsatellite markers, divided into three sets, were used to analyze 690 goats sampled from 10 goat populations. The average number of alleles (Na) and effective alleles (Ne) was 11.87 ± 3.93 and 5.093 ± 1.768, respectively. The average expected heterozygosity (HE) and observed heterozygosity (HO) was 0.780 ± 0.084 and 0.602 ± 0.116, respectively. The average polymorphic information content (PIC) was 0.747 ± 0.103; FIS was 0.058 ± 0.075. All 15 microsatellite markers were highly polymorphic. The genetic distances between individuals were estimated to construct a phylogenetic tree. In present study, the 690 goat samples were divided into 8 clusters. The results indicated that these 15 microsatellite markers successfully clustered goat populations in Taiwan and could assist in the preservation of TB goats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
