10. Thermoregulatory responses during road races in hot-humid conditions at the 2019 Athletics World Championships

Abstract

Abstract

Using the first principal study, we present and discuss the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of an ordered double perovskite Ba2FeMoO6 in the cubic (Fm-3 m) and tetragonal (I4/mmm) symmetries. The phase stability for ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states has been treated by applying the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-08). Moreover, the calculated lattice parameters are found to be in good agreement with experimental data. For understanding the electronic properties in the studies Ba2FeMoO6, band structure, and total and partial density of states have also been performed and discussed thoroughly. On the other hand, the Monte Carlo simulations were used to study the magnetic properties of Ba2FeMoO6. The Curie temperature was established. The magnetic entropy changes and relative cooling power were deduced. Finally, the magnetic hysteresis cycle was given. The tunability of TC and magnetocaloric properties, the reversible magnetocaloric effect, and the simple fabrication of the samples investigated here suggest a new research area for the development more promising magnetic coolers. Abstract

PURPOSE: To characterise hydration, cooling, body mass loss, and core (Tcore) and skin (Tsk) temperatures during World Athletics Championships in hot-humid conditions. METHODS: Marathon and race-walk (20 km and 50 km) athletes (n=83, 36 women) completed a pre-race questionnaire. Pre-race and post-race body weight (n=74), Tcore (n=56) and Tsk (n=49; thermography) were measured. RESULTS: Most athletes (93%) had a pre-planned drinking strategy (electrolytes (83%), carbohydrates (81%)) while ice slurry was less common (11%; p<0.001). More men than women relied on electrolytes and carbohydrates (91%-93% vs 67%-72%, p≤0.029). Drinking strategies were based on personal experience (91%) rather than external sources (p<0.001). Most athletes (80%) planned pre-cooling (ice vests (53%), cold towels (45%), neck collars (21%) and ice slurry (21%)) and/or mid-cooling (93%; head/face dousing (65%) and cold water ingestion (52%)). Menthol usage was negligible (1%-2%). Pre-race Tcore was lower in athletes using ice vests (37.5°C±0.4°C vs 37.8°C±0.3°C, p=0.024). Tcore (pre-race 37.7°C±0.3°C, post-race 39.6°C±0.6°C) was independent of event, ranking or performance (p≥0.225). Pre-race Tsk was correlated with faster race completion (r=0.32, p=0.046) and was higher in non-finishers (did not finish (DNF); 33.8°C±0.9°C vs 32.6°C±1.4°C, p=0.017). Body mass loss was higher in men than women (-2.8±1.5% vs -1.3±1.6%, p<0.001), although not associated with performance. CONCLUSION: Most athletes' hydration strategies were pre-planned based on personal experience. Ice vests were the most adopted pre-cooling strategy and the only one minimising Tcore, suggesting that event organisers should be cognisant of logistics (ie, freezers). Dehydration was moderate and unrelated to performance. Pre-race Tsk was related to performance and DNF, suggesting that Tsk modulation should be incorporated into pre-race strategies.

Abstract

International audience; The electric-octupole E3 transition strengths from the first 3− state to the ground-state transition in sd shell even-even nuclei with A=16 to 40 are investigated within the shell model framework using the effective (0+1)ℏω PSDPF interaction. For this type of transition, new effective charges for protons and neutrons have been determined. Their values 1.36 e for protons and 0.48 e for neutrons are close to those obtained previously for electric-quadrupole E2 transitions in sd shell nuclei. The calculated E3 transition strengths from the 31−→0gs+ transitions are compared to a compilation of experimental E3 data for even-even nuclei throughout the sd shell.

Abstract

International audience; The energy spectra and electromagnetic properties of Sulfur isotopes have been carried out using the PSDPF interaction. A detailed comparison, experiment versus theory, is presented for these isotopes with A = 32 (N = Z), 34 (N = Z + 2) and 36 (N = Z + 4) for normal 0 $ {\hbar {\omega }} $ (positive parity) and intruder 1 $ {\hbar {\omega }}$ (negative parity) states up to excitation energies of several MeV. Electric E2 and E3 transition strengths are also calculated and compared to available data.

Abstract

The first principles calculations of structural and magnetic properties of the Heusler material Mn2NiAl, have been studied using a full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) within the density-functional theory (DFT). The phase stability of the cubic austenitic (L21) structure for Mn2NiAl in both Cu2MnAl (Fm3 m space group) and Hg2CuTi (F43 m space group) type of structures with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states, has been treated by applying the generalized gradient approximation proposed by Wu and Cohen (WC-GGA) alongside with the martensitic structure of Mn2NiAl. The analysis of phase stability, cohesive energy and the calculated formation enthalpy of Mn2NiAl reveal that the ferromagnetic MnMnNiAl is the most stable type of structure. Moreover, the calculated lattice parameters are found to be in good agreement with theoretical data. The variation of total magnetic moments MT(μB), MMn (μB), MNi (μB) and MAl (μB) in Mn2NiAl with pressure at varying temperature (0, 273 and 344 K), have been calculated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Structural, electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic main features for Ni1-xTixO ternary alloys in rock-salt structure with Ti content in the range 0≤x≤1 were studied using the full potential Linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within density functional theory. The exchangecorrelation potential was calculated by the generalized gradient approximation. The analysis of the electronic density of states curves allowed the computation of the magnetic moments which are considered to lie along (010) axes. The thermodynamic stability of this alloy was investigated by calculating the excess enthalpy of mixing ΔHm as well as the phase diagram.
