Atomic layer deposited (ALD) transparent thermoelectric materials enable the introduction of energy harvesting and sensing devices onto surfaces of various shapes and sizes in imperceptible manner. Amongst these materials, ZnO has shown promising results in terms of both thermoelectric and optical characteristics. The thermoelectric performance of ZnO can be further optimized by introducing extrinsic doping, to the realization of which ALD provides excellent control. Here, we explore the effects of sandwiching of ZrO2 layers with ZnO on glass substrates. The room-temperature thermoelectric power factor is maximised at 116ÎĽW mâ'1 Kâ'2 with samples containing a 2% nominal percentage of ZrO2. The addition of ZrO2 layers is further shown to reduce the thermal conductivity, resulting in a 20.2% decrease from the undoped ZnO at 2% doping. Our results contribute to increasing the understanding of the effects of Zr inclusion in structural properties and growth of ALD ZnO, as well as the thermal and thermoelectric properties of Zr-doped ZnO films in general. A hologram-based compact antenna test range (CATR) is designed, constructed, and used to test a 1.5-m antenna at 650 GHz. The CATR is based on a 3.16-m-diameter hologram as the collimating element. So far, this is the highest frequency at which any CATR has been used for antenna tests. The quiet zone is measured and optimized before the antenna tests. The measured antenna pattern results at 650 GHz are analyzed and compared to the simulated patterns. Feed scanning antenna pattern comparison technique is used to correct the antenna pattern. These tests show the hologram CATR to be promising for antenna measurements up to 650 GHz. Index Terms--Antenna measurements, compact antenna test range (CATR), computer-generated hologram, submillimeter waves.

Manufacturing of large computer-generated submillimeter wave holograms with high pattern accuracy has been the main challenge in the development of hologram based compact antenna test ranges (CATRs). Illumination of the hologram with a shaped beam produced by a dual reflector feed system (DRFS) simplifies the hologram manufacturing by eliminating the narrow slots in the hologram pattern. In this paper, the design of a shaped dual reflector feed for a hologram CATR is described. The simulated and measured illumination field amplitude and phase at 310 GHz are presented and compared to the desired hologram illumination. The measured amplitude is within [+ or-] 0.5 dB from the design objective in the most significant central region of the illuminating beam. Measurement results of the quiet-zone field of a demonstration CATR illuminated by the DRFS are presented and compared to the measured quiet-zone amplitude and phase of a hologram fed directly with a corrugated horn. The quiet-zone diameters of the both holograms are over 0.25 meters and the measured root mean squared (rms) amplitude and phase ripples are below [+ or -] 0.4 dB and [+ or -] 5[degrees], respectively. Further improvements to the hologram CATR, such as greater tolerance to manufacturing errors, are also discussed. Index Terms--Compact range, computer-generated hologram, multireflector antennas, submillimeter wave antennas.

A hologram-based compact antenna test range (CATR) is being developed to overcome challenges met in antenna testing at submillimeter wavelengths. For the first time, this type of CATR has been built for testing of a large reflector antenna at submillimeter wavelengths. The CATR is based on a 3-m computer-generated hologram as the focusing element. This paper discusses the design and the construction of the CATR, and the verification of the CATR operation with quiet-zone tests done for the CATR prior to the antenna testing. Assembly of the CATR, testing of the 1.5-m reflector antenna at 322 GHz, and the disassembly were all done within two months in 2003. The quiet-zone field measurement results are analyzed in this paper. The CATR was concluded to be qualified for antenna testing. The antenna testing is described in a separate paper. Index Terms--Antenna measurements, compact antenna test range (CATR), computer-generated hologram, submillimeter wave.

Hologram-based compact antenna test range (CATR) is a potential method for testing large antennas at submillimeter wavelengths. This paper describes testing of a 1.5-m single offset parabolic reflector antenna with a 3-m-diameter hologram-based CATR. This is the first time such a measurement is carried out at submillimeter wavelengths. The antenna tests were done in a CATR that was specifically designed and constructed for these tests. The measured radiation pattern at the frequency of 322 GHz is presented. The measured pattern corresponds reasonably well to the simulated pattern of the antenna. The effect of the quiet-zone field nonidealities on the measurement results and the reasons for the discrepancies in the measured antenna beam are discussed. Index Terms--Antenna measurements, compact antenna test range (CATR), hologram, submillimeter wave antennas.

This paper studies the feasibility of a hologram-based compact antenna test range (CATR) for submillimeter-wave frequencies. In the CATR, a hologram is used as a collimating element to form a plane wave for antenna testing. The hologram is a computer-generated interference pattern etched on a thin metal-plated dielectric film. Two demonstration holograms of approximately 1 m in diameter were designed for 650 GHz, and they were manufactured on two different Mylar films. The holograms were illuminated with a horn, and the plane-wave field was probed at 644 GHz. The measured amplitude and phase ripples were 2 dB and 15[degrees] peak-to-peak for one of the holograms. A higher quiet-zone field quality can be achieved by increasing the manufacturing accuracy by further manufacturing tests. After this, the hologram-based CATR should have a potential for high-quality antenna tests at frequencies up to 650 GHz. Index Terms--Antenna measurements, compact antenna test range (CATR), hologram, submillimeter wave.

We synthesize amplitude- and phase-type computer-generated holograms (diffractive gratings) for shaping millimeter-wave fields. We design holograms using quasi-optical back-propagation and rigorous optimization methods adopted from diffractive optics. We present experimental results from a plane-wave-generating hologram and a custom-designed field shaper at 310 GHz. Holograms can be applied, e.g., in a compact antenna test range and we propose their use for alignment purposes. - Abstract
Thermal management in electronics has become increasingly important due to the possibility of fabricating very small structures using different nanotechnologies. On the other hand, III–V semiconductor materials have gained interest especially in optoelectronics and photovoltaics due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Each of these properties may be further engineered by introducing artificial nanostructures. A pivotal structure is the nanowire, which may be realized also as arrays consisting of countless nanowires, thus facilitating device integration. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of nanowires may be engineered by introducing thin coating layers, creating core-shell nanowires (CSNWs). Here we investigate the thermal properties of GaAs-AlAs and GaAs-AlGaAs CSNW arrays epitaxially grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The nanowire array samples are embedded in spin-on-glass (SOG), chemi-mechanically polished (CMP) and deposited with Ti and Au layers acting as transducer layers prior to the transient thermoreflectance (TTR) measurement. The aim of this work is to establish the experimental thermal conductivity values for GaAs-based nanowire arrays and to evaluate the origin of heteroshell-induced effects on the thermal conductivity of the arrays. The experimental results display a reduction of thermal conductivity for 56 nm thick GaAs nanowires coated with AlAs shells of different thicknesses, the maximum reduction taking place with shell thickness of 35 nm. Additionally, a 6.59 W m^−1 K^−1 thermal conductivity for 105 nm GaAs nanowire arrays was measured, congruent with the previous publications on the subject. Addition of different shells resulted in a suppressed thermal conductivity with the average reduction amounting to 21.6%. The reduction is theorized to origin from the interplay of phonon trapping and increased scattering at the core-shell interface. Further measurements are required to determinate the interface quality and its ef, Elektroniikan lämmönhallinta on tullut yhä tärkeämmäksi nanotekniikan viimeaikaisen kehittymisen aiheuttaman komponenttien koon pienenemisen takia. Toisaalta III–V-puolijohdemateriaalit ovat herättäneet mielenkiintoa erityisesti optoelektroniikassa ja aurinkosähkösovelluksissa niiden erinomaisten valosähköisten ominaisuuksien ansiosta. Kutakin ominaisuutta voidaan edelleen kehittää hyödyntämällä keinotekoisia nanorakenteita. Yksi keskeisistä rakenteista on nanolanka, joita voidaan kasvattaa lukuisista nanolangoista koostuvina hiloina laiteintegraation mahdollistaen. Kokeellisissa tuloksissa havaittiin lämmönjohtavuuden aleneminen eripaksuisilla AlAs-kuorilla pinnoitetuilla keskiarvopaksuudeltaan 56 nm GaAs-nanolangoilla. Suurin muutos havaittiin 35nm kuoripaksuudella. Lisäksi keskiarvopaksuudeltaan 105 nm GaAs-nanolangoille mitattiin 6.59 W m^−1 K^−1 lämmönjohtavuus, mikä on samansuuntainen tulos aikaisemmin julkaistuihin tuloksiin verrattuna. Erilaisten kuorirakenteiden lisääminen aiheutti näissä nanolangoissa 21.6% keskimääräisen lämmönjohtavuuden aleneman. Muutoksen päätellään johtuvan fononiloukkuuntumisen ja lisääntyneen ydinkuorirajapintasironnan yhteisvaikutuksesta. Muutoksen alkuperän varmistaminen vaatii rajapinnan

- Abstract
Semiconductor nanowire heterostructures have been shown to provide appealing properties for optoelectronics and solid-state energy harvesting by thermoelectrics. Among these nanoarchitectures, coaxial core-shell nanowires have been of primary interest due to their electrical functionality, as well as intriguing phonon localization effects in the surface-dominated regime predicted via atomic simulations. However, experimental studies on the thermophysical properties of III-V semiconductor core-shell nanowires remain scarce regardless of the ubiquitous nature of these compounds in solid-state applications. Here, we present thermal conductivity measurements of the arrays of GaAs nanowires coated with AlAs shells. We unveil a strong suppression in thermal transport facilitated by the AlAs shells, up to ∼60%, producing a nonmonotonous dependence of thermal conductivity on the shell thickness. Such translation of the novel heat transport phenomena to macroscopic nanowire arrays paves the way for rational thermal design in nanoscale applications.

- Abstract
We have constructed a demonstrative compact antenna test range (CATR) and tested its performance at 650 GHz. An amplitude hologram of 0.93 meter in diameter was used as the focusing element of the CATR. The measured amplitude and phase ripples in the quiet-zone are ca. 2 dB and 15°, peak-to-peak. Good measurement results indicate that the hologram based CATR is applicable also for high submillimeter wave frequencies.

Computer-generated holograms can be applied in space terahertz technology; they are particularly suitable as focusing elements in compact test ranges, for example, in testing of high-gain antennas and measuring radar cross section (RCS) of scaled models. Radio holograms have also been demonstrated in other millimeter- and submillimeter-wave beam-shaping applications, such as the creation of non-diffracting mm-wave Bessel beams, mm-wave vortices, and custom-designed beam patterns. During summer 2003 we built a temporary measuring facility at the High Voltage Institute of the Helsinki University of Technology to test the ADMIRALS antenna built by EADS Astrium. The measurement results obtained at 322 GHz are so promising that we are currently proposing a hologram CATR test for the Planck telescope at 500 GHz.

- Abstract
The usage of browser applications becomes more and more common all the time. They are replacing traditional applications, for example, as email clients. In addition, social media services are typically available for a browser application. Webkit is one of the most widespread browser engines available and it is used, for example, by Google in its Chrome browser. Webkit offers two different versions. Qt is a development framework managed by Digia. Qt can be used to deploy applications to several platforms using the same source code. A Qt port of the Webkit is also provided with a Qt development framework. Webkit 2 is a newer version of this famous engine and is also provided when installing Qt version 5. A Qt version of both Webkit and Webkit 2 is available. The purpose of my thesis is to explain the difference between the two versions of Webkits, in addition to measuring and analyzing the found differences. Webkit and Webkit 2 differ from each other from an architectural point of view so that Webkit 2 is split to work in two processes while the older version of Webkit runs the entire code in a single process. In Webkit and Webkit 2, the actual rendering occurs in the same manner. Better stability and reactivity as well as the possibility to use an environment of several processors are the most significant advantages of Webkit 2 architecture. Webkit and Webkit 2engines are compared in four different performance tests. These are page load speed, DOM speed, JavaScript speed, and CSS speed. Tests are driven in a virtual Linux environment first using one and then two processors. Test results prove that the Webkit 2 -based browser is not faster in any measured area, compared to the older version of Webkit. Instead, the Webkit 2 -based browser is clearly slower, especially when calculating differences using percentages, in all other areas except in DOM speed. If results are viewed using milliseconds, only the results of tests measuring page load speed show notable differenc, Selainapplikaatioiden käyttö yleistyy jatkuvasti jokapäiväisessä ekamassamme. Ne korvaavat perinteisiä applikaatioita esimerkiksi sähköpostin käytössä, lisäksi sosiaalisten medioiden palvelut ovat poikkeuksetta käytettävissä juuri selainapplikaatioilla. Webkit on yksi käytetyimmistä selainmoottoreista, se on käytössä esimerkiksi Googlen Chrome selaimessa. Siitä on olemassa nykyään kaksi eri versiota. Qt puolestaan on Digian hallinnoima kehitysympäristö, jolla voi tehdä applikaatioita useille en käyttöjärjestelmille hyödyntämällä samaa lähdekoodia. Qt kehitysympäristön mukana toimitetaan myös Qt versio Webkit:stä. Webkit 2 on selainmoottorin uudempi versio. Molemmista Webkit versioista on olemassa Qt versio.

Subject of this thesis was to develop the operations of Metso Drives Oy machining workshop for gear housings. Year 2003 housing manufacturing of Metso Drives Oy was at critical period. The machining load was intense and the range of products was very high. The methods for controlling the capacity and supplier network were found lacking. High load for machining workshop was putting pressure on process development. The main goals for this study were to find potential development areas from housing machining and to create clear criteria for make or buy decisions. In addition aim was to develop tools to help control the capacity and to optimize the use of supplier network. This study for potential development areas concentrated on the housing type with biggest yearly volumes. The methods for capacity control and optimization of supplier network concentrated on developing long term planning. The development project of housing manufacturing was done using 7-step development tool. Present condition of capacity planning and the use of suppliers were started by checking the machining hours and the costs of products both at internal manufacturing and at suppliers. Based on these studies an Excel-based tool was created to help with long term capacity planning. As a result of this thesis numerous potential development areas for housing machining were found. In addition it was noticed that the use of capacity planning tool brought significant cost savings for the company., Työn aiheena oli Metso Drives Oy:n koteloverstaan toiminnan kehittäminen. Kuormituksen hallinnan ja make or buy -päätösten osalta työssä keskityttiin ennustepohjaisen, pitkän aikavälin suunnittelun tehostamiseen.

This article presents an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag antenna, which works in the 902-928 MHz band. The multi-slotted dual patch tag antenna is designed for a 1.6-mm-thick substrate, and it can be mounted on metal without degradation in performance. Due to a low-profile and simple structure, this antenna has more potential for mass production compared to earlier antenna designs. It is shown by simulations how the bandwidth can be increased by incorporating multiple slots in the radiating patch elements of the antenna. Design curves showing the effect of different tuning parameters on the tag performance are presented. The performance of the tag is evaluated both in free-space and on metal plate and the simulated input impedance, power reflection and radiation patterns are presented. A prototype of this multi-slotted dual patch tag antenna has been constructed and impedance measurements are performed for the proposed tag in free-space and on metal plate. Finally, maximum readable distances for the tag are calculated. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 53:40-47, 2011; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Computer-generated holograms can be used as collimating elements in compact antenna test ranges (CATR5). Recently, a 1.5 m parabolic antenna, the ADMIRALS representative test object (RTO), was tested at 322 GHz using a hologram-based CATR that was built specifically for these tests. The construction of the compact range is discussed in this paper. A 3 m hologram was used to realize a 1.8 m diameter quiet zone. The measured quiet-zone field amplitude and phase and the measured H-plane radiation pattern cut of the representative test object are presented. The measured -3 dB beam width of the antenna was 0.0500 in the H plane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
It is generally assumed that contact angle hysteresis of superhydrophobic surfaces scales with liquid-solid contact fraction, however, its experimental verification has been problematic due to the limited accuracy of contact angle and sliding angle goniometry. Advances in cantilever-based friction probes enable accurate droplet friction measurements down to the nanonewton regime, thus suiting much better for characterizing the wetting of superhydrophobic surfaces than contact angle hysteresis measurements. This work quantifies the relationship between droplet friction and liquid-solid contact fraction, through theory and experimental validation. Well-defined micropillar and microcone structures are used as model surfaces to provide a wide range of different liquid-solid contact fractions. Micropillars are known to be able to hold the water on top of them, and a theoretical analysis together with confocal laser scanning microscopy shows that despite the spiky nature of the microcones droplets do not sink into the conical structure either, rendering a diminishingly small liquid-solid contact fraction. Droplet friction characterization with a micropipette force sensor technique reveals a strong dependence of the droplet friction on the contact fraction, and the dependency is described with a simple physical equation, despite the nearly three-orders-of-magnitude difference in liquid-solid contact fraction between the sparsest cone surface and the densest pillar surface., (© 2024 The Author(s).
