Chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) poses challenges like pain and numbness, necessitating innovative treatments due to current limitations. Conventional approaches, relying on pain relief medications and dose adjustments, fall short in addressing neurotoxicity, resulting in inadequate pain relief and undesired effects. Aconite root (AR), a medicinal herb withcenturies of use against various diseases, contains a compound named Aconine, which alleviates pain by blocking specific neural channels. However, AR also contains Aconitine, a toxic substance hydrolyzed into nontoxic Aconine through heating. Herein, hyaluronate‐poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) nanoparticles (HA‐PLGA/AR NPs) encapsulating Aconine are fabricated, enabling controlled release, protection, and transdermal delivery, enhancing therapeutic outcomes. High‐performance liquid chromatography identifies optimal Aconine content after 48 h of AR boiling, with minimal neural toxicity confirmed. Characterization via transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and in vitro assays demonstrates superior drug release by HA‐PLGA/AR NPs, establishing effective transdermal Aconine delivery. In an in vitro CIPN model with paclitaxel (PTX)‐treated PC12 cells, HA‐PLGA/AR NPs stimulate enhanced neurite growth, validating their localized analgesic impact on CIPN and suggesting potential symptom alleviation. Taken together, HA‐PLGA/AR NPs offer a promising strategy for controlled transdermal Aconine delivery, potentially alleviating CIPN and addressing various neuropathies and diseases.

Abstract Cryotherapy leverages controlled freezing temperature interventions to engender a cascade of tumor‐suppressing effects. However, its bottleneck lies in the standalone ineffectiveness. A promising strategy is using nanoparticle therapeutics to augment the efficacy of cryotherapy. Here, a cold‐responsive nanoplatform composed of upconversion nanoparticles coated with silica – chlorin e6 – hyaluronic acid (UCNPs@SiO2‐Ce6‐HA) is designed. This nanoplatform is employed to integrate cryotherapy with photodynamic therapy (PDT) in order to improve skin cancer treatment efficacy in a synergistic manner. The cryotherapy appeared to enhance the upconversion brightness by suppressing the thermal quenching. The low‐temperature treatment afforded a 2.45‐fold enhancement in the luminescence of UCNPs and a 3.15‐fold increase in the photodynamic efficacy of UCNPs@SiO2‐Ce6‐HA nanoplatforms. Ex vivo tests with porcine skins and the subsequent validation in mouse tumor tissues revealed the effective HA‐mediated transdermal delivery of designed nanoplatforms to deep tumor tissues. After transdermal delivery, in vivo photodynamic therapy using the UCNPs@SiO2‐Ce6‐HA nanoplatforms resulted in the optimized efficacy of 79% in combination with cryotherapy. These findings underscore the Cryo‐PDT as a truly promising integrated treatment paradigm and warrant further exploring the synergistic interplay between cryotherapy and PDT with bright upconversion to unlock their full potential in cancer therapy.

Abstract Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal cell growth that spreads through other parts of the body and threatens life by destroying healthy tissues. Therefore, numerous techniques have been employed not only to diagnose and monitor the progress of cancer in a precise manner but also to develop appropriate therapeutic agents with enhanced efficacy and safety profiles. In this regard, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), synthetic receptors that recognize targeted molecules with high affinity and selectivity, have been intensively investigated as one of the most attractive biomaterials for theragnostic approaches. This review describes diverse synthesis strategies to provide the rationale behind these synthetic antibodies and provides a selective overview of the recent progress in the in vitro and in vivo targeting of cancer biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic applications. Taken together, the topics discussed in this review provide concise guidelines for the development of novel MIP-based systems to diagnose cancer more precisely and promote successful treatment. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been regarded as emerging materials in various applications. However, the range of biomedical applications is limited due to the aggregation and potential toxicity of powder-type CNTs. To overcome these issues, techniques to assemble them into various macroscopic structures, such as one-dimensional fibers, two-dimensional films, and three-dimensional aerogels, have been developed. Among them, carbon nanotube fiber (CNTF) is a one-dimensional aggregate of CNTs, which can be used to solve the potential toxicity problem of individual CNTs. Furthermore, since it has unique properties due to the one-dimensional nature of CNTs, CNTF has beneficial potential for biomedical applications. This review summarizes the biomedical applications using CNTF, such as the detection of biomolecules or signals for biosensors, strain sensors for wearable healthcare devices, and tissue engineering for regenerating human tissues. In addition, by considering the challenges and perspectives of CNTF for biomedical applications, the feasibility of CNTF in biomedical applications is discussed.

IoT device market has grown rapidly in recent years, with many researches have been done to investigate the IoT devices’ adoption factors. However, it is crucial to understand how to maintain the users’ continuance intention. This study, based on the post-acceptance model of the Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM), investigates the impact of early-stage users’ personal traits (personal innovativeness), social influence (normative and informational), and familiarity, on the social diffusion of IoT devices (in particular, smart speakers) measured by the continuation intention of smart speakers. We tested the research model and hypotheses using data from 364 smart speaker users, analyzed with partial least square technique using Smart-PLS. The data analysis results revealed that satisfaction has a very strong and positive impact on continuance intention. Perceived usefulness, confirmation, and personal innovativeness are positively associated with continuance intention via satisfaction. Social influence, represented by normative and informational social influence, showed a significant positive impact on continuance intention, a high degree of familiarity weakens the influence of normative social influence on continuance intention; however, familiarity has no impact on the relationship between informational social influence and continuance intention.

The recovery of biocompatible implantable biomaterials from biowaste is a significant method for protecting both human health and the environment concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of using hydroxyapatite (HAp) granules derived from planktonic exoskeleton bone in the ocean (OceanBone-HAp) as a bone graft substitute. The morphology and physiochemical properties of the OceanBone-HAp were evaluated using SEM, XRD and FT-IR. In addition, the absence of heavy metals and abundance of trace elements in OceanBone-HAp was confirmed using ICP-OES analysis. Moreover, in vitro results showed that OceanBone-HAp improved cell proliferation, adhesion, differentiation, and infiltration, compared to stoichiometric synthetic HAp granules (pure HAp). Additionally, OceanBone-HAp improved the expression of osteogenic related markers, by upregulation of ALP, collagen type-1αI(Col1αI), osteocalcin (OCN), and bone sialoprotein (BSP), which was confirmed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, in vivo bone regeneration was also evaluated using a rabbit calvarial defect model, and the results showed that the area of mature bone formation was significantly higher for OceanBone-HAp than pure HAp. These results demonstrated that OceanBone-HAp granules have good potential for use in bone healing as a bone graft material.

Abstract Various non-invasive administrations have recently emerged as an alternative to conventional needle injections. A transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) represents the most attractive method among these because of its low rejection rate, excellent ease of administration, and superb convenience and persistence among patients. TDDS could be applicable in not only pharmaceuticals but also in the skin care industry, including cosmetics. Because this method mainly involves local administration, it can prevent local buildup in drug concentration and nonspecific delivery to tissues not targeted by the drug. However, the physicochemical properties of the skin translate to multiple obstacles and restrictions in transdermal delivery, with numerous investigations conducted to overcome these bottlenecks. In this review, we describe the different types of available TDDS methods, along with a critical discussion of the specific advantages and disadvantages, characterization methods, and potential of each method. Progress in research on these alternative methods has established the high efficiency inherent to TDDS, which is expected to find applications in a wide range of fields.

Over the past two decades, lanthanide-based upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have been fascinating scientists due to their ability to offer unprecedented prospects to upconvert tissue-penetrating near-infrared light into color-tailorable optical illumination inside biological matter. In particular, luminescent behavior UCNPs have been widely utilized for background-free biorecognition and biosensing. Currently, a paramount challenge exists on how to maximize NIR light harvesting and upconversion efficiencies for achieving faster response and better sensitivity without damaging the biological tissue upon laser assisted photoactivation. In this review, we offer the reader an overview of the recent updates about exciting achievements and challenges in the development of plasmon-modulated upconversion nanoformulations for biosensing application.

The localized surface plasmon resonance of metallic nanoparticles has attracted much attention owing to its unique characteristics, including the enhancement of signals in sensors and photothermal effects. In particular, hollow gold nanostructures are highly promising for practical applications, with significant advantages being found in their material properties and structures: 1) the interaction between the outer surface plasmon mode and inner cavity mode leads to a greater resonance, allowing it to absorb near-infrared light, which can readily penetrate tissue; 2) it has anti-corrosiveness and good biocompatibility, which makes it suitable for biomedical applications; 3) it shows a reduced net density and large surface area, allowing the possibility of nanocarriers for drug delivery. In this review, we present information on the classification, characteristics, and synthetic methods of hollow gold nanostructures; discuss the recent advances in hollow gold nanostructures in biomedical applications, including biosensing, bioimaging, photothermal therapy, and drug delivery; and report on the existing challenges and prospects for hollow gold nanostructures.

Abstract Background Alopecia has become a very common disease that many people around the world are suffered. Minoxidil (MXD) is the most well-known commercialized drug in its treatment. However, in the case of MXD administration, there are some problems with low efficiency of transdermal delivery and additional side effects. Method MXD and Rhodamine B (Rho B) are encapsulated in poly(Lactide-co-Glycolide) grafted hyaluronate nanoparticles (HA-PLGA/MXD NPs, HA-PLGA/Rho B NPs) which is prepared with W/O/W solvent evaporation method. After then, the investigation is carried out to confirm the feasibility of NPs in alopecia treatment. Results Both of HA-PLGA/MXD NPs and HA-PLGA/Rho B NPs are successfully prepared. In addition, it is confirmed that HA-PLGA NPs sufficiently delivered to cells without any significant cytotoxicity by cell viability, cellular uptake and skin permeation test. Conclusion Taken together, HA-PLGA NPs as a transdermal delivery carrier to hair follicle cells can be exploited to develop the efficient and effective platform of transdermal drug delivery for the treatment of various diseases.

Whitlockite (WH) is a calcium-phosphate-based Mg-containing ceramic with good mechanical properties, rapid resorption, and good osteogenicity. Recently, we successfully synthesized highly porous WH granules using a marine plankton exoskeleton (MP-WH). In the present study, we improved the osteoinductive activity of MP-WH granules by bone morphogenetic protein2 (BMP2) (MP-WH/BMP2). The surface morphology and composition of the fabricated MP-WH/BMP2 granules were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The biocompatibility and osteogenic effects were evaluated using human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). BMP2 was absorbed on the surfaces of the MP-WH/BMP2 granules. Immobilized BMP2 was released at a moderate rate over 30 days. hMSCs seeded on MP-WH/BMP2 granules became biocompatible, with a better proliferation and adhesion for MP-WH/BMP2, compared with MP-WH. Bone-specific markers Runx2, type I collagen, osteocalcin, and osteopontin were significantly upregulated following BMP2 incorporation. Similar observations were made regarding the alkaline phosphatase activity. This study suggests that BMP2 incorporation improves the osteoinductive activity of marine-plankton-derived WH granules for bone tissue repair.

We investigate factors affecting individual investors' switching intention from traditional financial market to crypto-currency financial market. By sampling factors of individual investors related with crypto-currency (CC), the study applies structural equation modeling method (SEM) to investigate their effects on switching intention by integrating PPM and Reinforcement Sensitivity theories (RST) to form a pulling, pushing and mooring effects model. The investigation indicates that crypto-currency market can be regarded as a kind of beneficial supplement of tradition investment market for those individual investors who are with high innovativeness, reward sensitivity, knowledge and perceived risk. This study proves that the individual investors are not only attracted by significant expected return from crypto-currency but also relevant knowledge and risks disclosed by crypto-currency market regulators and distributors. The findings reinforce major roles for both market regulators and individual investors in considering and providing insights for future policy, management and investigations.

Abstract Background The injection of botulinum toxin (BTX) to reduce facial wrinkles is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures. The biocompatible hydrogels are injected with BTX for effective tissue augmentation. However, it is difficult to determine the interval of injection for effective tissue augmentation. Method BTX and hyaluronate (HA) hydrogels were labeled with zwitterionic (ZW) near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores and visualized for 3 weeks after injection to BALB/c nude mice. Results BTX-ZW conjugates and diaminohexane (DAH)-HA-ZW hydrogels were successfully prepared by the conventional EDC/NHS chemistry. Using the NIR fluorescence imaging, we confirmed that approximately 10% of BTX-ZW conjugates and 50% of DAH-HA-ZW hydrogels remained 3 weeks post-injection. Conclusion This bioimaging technique using invisible NIR fluorescence light can be exploited for various biomedical applications.

Hyaluronate (HA) has been widely investigated for noninvasive topical drug delivery of chemical drugs and biopharmaceuticals. However, previous noninvasive delivery systems have been facilitated mostly by chemical conjugation of drugs with HA, which can cause reduced therapeutic efficacy and safety issues in chemically modified drugs. Here, HA nanogels were synthesized by crosslinking via “click” chemistry for noninvasive topical delivery of a model drug without chemical modification. The model-drug-encapsulating HA nanogels could be uptaken to the skin melanoma cells in vitro by HA-mediated endocytosis. In addition, histological analysis showed that HA nanogels could be topically delivered to the deep skin and tongue tissues through the noninvasive delivery routes. Taken together, HA nanogels could be effectively used for the noninvasive topical delivery of various therapeutic drugs.

A variety of 2D materials have been developed for therapeutic biomedical studies. Because of their excellent physicochemical properties, 2D materials can be used as carriers for delivering therapeutic agents into a lesion, leading to phototherapy. Various optical imaging techniques have been used for the monitoring of the treatment process. Among these, photoacoustic imaging has unique advantages including relatively deep imaging depth and large field of view with high spatial resolution. In this review article, we summarize the types of photoacoustic imaging systems used for phototherapy monitoring, then we explore contrast-enhanced photoacoustic images using 2D materials. Finally, photoacoustic image-guided phototherapies are discussed. We conclude that 2D material-based phototherapy can be efficiently monitored by photoacoustic imaging techniques.

Light-based therapies are of growing importance in medicine, though penetrating tissue and reaching the targeted area can be difficult. Here, the authors report the use of biodegradable waveguides capable of directing light where desired, and demonstrate the potential for wound healing.

Research on cancer theragnosis with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has rapidly increased, as AuNPs have many useful characteristics for various biomedical applications, such as biocompatibility, tunable optical properties, enhanced permeability and retention (EPR), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), photothermal properties, and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). AuNPs have been widely utilized in cancer theragnosis, including phototherapy and photoimaging, owing to their enhanced solubility, stability, biofunctionality, cancer targetability, and biocompatibility. In this review, specific characteristics and recent modifications of AuNPs over the past decade are discussed, as well as their application in cancer theragnostics and future perspectives. In the future, AuNP-based cancer theragnosis is expected to facilitate the development of innovative and novel strategies for cancer therapy.

This paper explores two inter-connected issues – the state’s role in educational development and educational contribution to economic development – in the policy processes entailed by the South Korean state’s pursuit of economic development during the Park Chung Hi era, 1961-1979. It disputes the statist view that South Korea’s economic development was the outcome of a strong state’s imposition of developmental policies. It also denies the human capital account that central to the South Korean state’s education policy was the skills formation agendum. In this paper’s process analysis, educational contribution to economic development was made most importantly in the entrance competition-swept schools by virtue of their equipping South Koreans with basic knowledge and intellectual skills and the most important educational asset for economic development was those schools’ explosive growth. The latter took place as an unexpected effect of the state’s developmental policy of containment which aimed to secure scarce funds for strategic developmental projects. This policy intensified entrance competitions, boosted demand for education, and provoked public call for state commitment to educational expansion. The legitimacy-deficient regime responded politically and compromised on the developmental education policy from one level of formal schooling to another. The image of the developmental state thus portrayed is quite contrary to that provided by the statist-human capital perspective.

This article examines the relationship between globalization and national education reforms, especially those of educational systems. Instead of exploring the much debated issues of how globalization affects national educational systems and how the nations react by what kinds of systemic education reform, however, it focuses on what such a method often leaves out, viz., the internal conditions of a nation that facilitates or hampers reform efforts. Taking South Korea as an example, it explores that country's unique national context which restricts and even inhibits education reforms. Especially noted here is the established "statist" political economy in education. In the paper's analysis, although South Korea's statist political economy has made a substantial contribution to economic and educational development, it is now considered increasingly unviable as globalization progresses. Nevertheless, the internal conditions, resultant from the previous statist policies, set limits on policy makers' efforts to alter the existing educational system. The analysis suggests that a fuller assessment of globalization's impact upon national educational systems or their reforms requires a perspective which is broad enough to encompass not only the concepts and/or theories of globalization and nation states but also the power relations and ideological setup of individual nations.

In the 1998 academic year, 84 percent of South Korea's high school "leavers" entered a university or college while almost all children went up to high schools. This is to say, South Korea is now moving into a new age of universal higher education. Even so, competition for university entrance remains intense. What is here interesting is South Koreans' unusually high demand for education. In this article, I criticize the existing cultural and socio-economic interpretations of the phenomenon. Instead, I explore a new interpretation by critically referring to the recent political economy debate on South Korea's state-society/market relationship. In my interpretation, the unusually high demand for education is largely due to the powerful South Korean state's losing flexibility in the management of its "developmental" policies.
