ABSTRACT: Genomic selection and extensive use of a few elite bulls through artificial insemination are leading to reduced genetic diversity in Jersey cattle. Conservation of genetic diversity through gene banks can protect a breed's genetic diversity and genetic gain, ensuring continued genetic advancement in the future. The availability of genomic information in the US National Animal Germplasm Program (NAGP) facilitates characterization of Jersey bulls in the germplasm collection. Therefore, in this study, we compared the genetic diversity and inbreeding between Jersey bulls in the NAGP and the National Cooperator Database (NCD). The NCD is maintained and curated by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). We found the genetic diversity to be marginally higher in NAGP (Ho = 0.34 ± 0.17) relative to the NCD population (Ho = 0.33 ± 0.16). The average pedigree and genomic inbreeding (FPED, FGRM, FROH > 2Mb) were similar between the groups, with estimates of 7.6% with FPED, 11.07% with FGRM and 20.13% with FROH > 2Mb. An increasing trend in inbreeding was detected, and a significantly higher level of inbreeding was estimated among the older bulls in the NAGP collection, suggesting an overrepresentation of the genetics from elite bulls. Results from principal component analyses (PCA) provided evidence that the NAGP collection is representative of the genetic variation found in the NCD population and a broad majority of the loci segregating (98.2%) in the NCD population were also segregating in the NAGP. Ward's clustering was used to assess collection completeness of Jerseys in the NAGP by comparison with top 1000 sires of bulls, top 1000 sires of cow, and bulls with high Lifetime Net Merit (NM$). All the clusters were represented in the NAGP suggesting that most of the genetic diversity in the US Jersey population is represented in the NAGP and confirmed the PCA results. The decade of birth was the major driver grouping bulls into clusters, suggesting the importance of selection over time. Selection signature analysis between the historic bulls in the NAGP with the newer bulls, born in the decade after implementation of genomic selection, identified selection for milk production, fat and protein yield, fertility, health, and reproductive traits. Cluster analysis revealed that the NAGP has captured allele frequency changes over time associated with selection, validating the strategy of repeated sampling and suggests that the continuation of a repeated sampling policy is essential for the germplasm collection to maintain its future utility. Although NAGP should continue to collect bulls that have large influence on the population due to selection, care should be taken to include the entire breadth of bulls, including low merit bulls.

The elbows play a critical role in industrial and power plant systems. To ensure operational safety, extensive research has been conducted on the fatigue behaviour of pipe bends. This study focuses on evaluating the low-cycle fatigue life of elbows, with particular emphasis on investigating the influence of shape imperfections, namely ovality and thinning. Initially, a validation study is carried out on elbows with circular cross-sections to estimate the fatigue life. Subsequently, a comprehensive set of 81 elbow geometry models is generated, incorporating shape imperfections. The material properties are assumed to exhibit elastic-plastic behaviour, representing the commonly used STPT410 material. Finite element analysis is employed to assess the behavior of elbows subjected to cyclic displacement loading of ±20 mm. The low-cycle fatigue life of the elbows is estimated using revised universal slope method, in conjunction with finite element results. The findings reveal that ovality enhances the fatigue life by 15.26–20.05% for maximum ovality whereas maximum thinning leads to a reduction of fatigue life by 10.81–17.33%. Furthermore, mathematical equations are proposed to quantitatively capture the effects of ovality and thinning.

Abstract Agricultural field experiments are costly and time-consuming, and often struggling to capture spatial and temporal variability. Mechanistic crop growth models offer a solution to understand intricate crop-soil-weather system, aiding farm-level management decisions throughout the growing season. The objective of this study was to calibrate and the Crop Environment Resource Synthesis CERES-Maize (DSSAT v 4.8) model to simulate crop growth, yield, and nitrogen dynamics in a long-term conservation agriculture (CA) based maize system. The model was also used to investigate the relationship between, temperature, nitrate and ammoniacal concentration in soil, and nitrogen uptake by the crop. Additionally, the study explored the impact of contrasting tillage practices and fertilizer nitrogen management options on maize yields. Using field data from 2019 and 2020, the DSSAT-CERES-Maize model was calibrated for plant growth stages, leaf area index-LAI, biomass, and yield. Data from 2021 were used to evaluate the model's performance. The treatments consisted of four nitrogen management options, viz., N0 (without nitrogen), N150 (150 kg N/ha through urea), GS (Green seeker-based urea application) and USG (urea super granules @150kg N/ha) in two contrasting tillage systems, i.e., CA-based zero tillage-ZT and conventional tillage-CT. The model accurately simulated maize cultivar’s anthesis and physiological maturity, with observed value falling within 5% of the model’s predictions range. LAI predictions by the model aligned well with measured values (RMSE 0.57 and nRMSE 10.33%), with a 14.6% prediction error at 60 days. The simulated grain yields generally matched with measured values (with prediction error ranging from 0 to 3%), except for plots without nitrogen application, where the model overestimated yields by 9–16%. The study also demonstrated the model's ability to accurately capture soil nitrate–N levels (RMSE 12.63 kg/ha and nRMSE 12.84%). The study concludes that the DSSAT-CERES-Maize model accurately assessed the impacts of tillage and nitrogen management practices on maize crop’s growth, yield, and soil nitrogen dynamics. By providing reliable simulations during the growing season, this modelling approach can facilitate better planning and more efficient resource management. Future research should focus on expanding the model's capabilities and improving its predictions further.

Background: The World Health Assembly (WHA), on 1st December 2021, unanimously agreed to launch a global process to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement, or other international instrument under the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) constitution to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. We aimed to explore the role of global health diplomacy (GHD) in pandemic treaty negotiations by providing deep insight into the ongoing drafting process under the WHO leadership. Methods: We conducted a narrative review by searching Scopus, Web of Sciences, PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar search engine using the keywords "Pandemic Treaty," OR "International Health Regulations," OR "International conventions," OR "International treaties" in the context of recent COVID-19 pandemic. Besides, we included articles recommending the need for GHD, leadership and governance mechanisms for this international treaty drafting approved by the WHA. Results: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the concept of GHD bolstered the international system and remained high on the agendas of many national, regional and global platforms. As per Article 19 of the WHO constitution, the Assembly established an intergovernmental negotiating body (INB) to draft and negotiate this convention/ agreement to protect the world from disease outbreaks of pandemic potential. Since GHD has helped to strengthen international cooperation in health systems and address inequities in achieving health-related global targets, there is a great scope for the successful drafting of this pandemic treaty. Conclusion: The pandemic treaty is a defining moment in global health governance, particularly the pandemic governance reforms. However, the treaty’s purpose will only be served if the equity considerations are optimized, accountability mechanisms are established, and a sense of shared responsibility is embraced. While fulfilling treaty commitments might be complex and challenging, it provides an opportunity to rethink and build resilient systems for pandemic preparedness and response in the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of global health diplomacy (GHD), with India emerging as a key player. India’s commitment to GHD is demonstrated by its active participation in regional and multilateral projects, pharmaceutical expertise, and large-scale manufacturing capabilities, which include the production and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and essential medicines. India has supported nations in need through bilateral and multilateral platforms, providing vaccines to countries experiencing shortages and offering technical assistance and capacity-building programs to improve healthcare infrastructure and response capabilities. India’s unique approach to GHD, rooted in humanitarian diplomacy, emphasized collaboration and empathy and stressed the well-being of humanity by embracing the philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," which translates to "the world is one family." Against this background, this paper’s main focus is to analyze the rise of India’s GHD amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and its leadership in addressing various global challenges. India has demonstrated its commitment to global solidarity by offering medical supplies, equipment, and expertise to more than 100 countries. India’s rising global leadership can be attributed to its proactive approach, humanitarian diplomacy, and significant contributions to global health initiatives.

ContextAgricultural field experiments are costly and time-consuming, and their site-specific nature limits their ability to capture spatial and temporal variability. This hinders the transfer of crop management information across different locations, impeding effective agricultural decision-making. Further, accurate estimates of the benefits and risks of alternative crop and nutrient management options are crucial for effective decision-making in agriculture.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to utilize the Crop Environment Resource Synthesis CERES-Wheat model to simulate crop growth, yield, and nitrogen dynamics in a long-term conservation agriculture (CA) based wheat system. The study aimed to calibrate the model using data from a field experiment conducted during the 2019-20-2020-21 growing seasons and evaluation it with independent data from the year 2021–22.MethodCrop simulation models, such as the Crop Environment Resource Synthesis CERES-Wheat (DSSAT v 4.8), may provide valuable insights into crop growth and nitrogen dynamics, enabling decision makers to understand and manage production risk more effectively.Therefore, the present study employed the CERES-Wheat (DSSAT v 4.8) model and calibrated it using field data, including plant phenological phases, leaf area index, aboveground biomass, and grain yield from the 2019-20-2020-21 growing seasons. An independent dataset from the year 2021–22 was used for model evaluation. The model was used to investigate the relationship between growing degree days (GDD), temperature, nitrate and ammonical concentration in soil, and nitrogen uptake by the crop. Additionally, the study explored the impact of contrasting tillage practices and fertilizer nitrogen management options on wheat yields. The experimental site is situated at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, representing Indian Trans-Gangetic Plains Zone (28o 40’N latitude, 77o 11’E longitude and an altitude of 228 m above sea level). The treatments consist of four nitrogen management options, viz., N0 (zero nitrogen), N150 (150 kg N ha−1 through urea), GS (Green seeker based urea application) and USG (urea super granules @150 kg N ha−1) in two contrasting tillage systems, i.e., CA-based zero tillage (ZT) and conventional tillage (CT).ResultThe outcomes exhibited favorable agreement between the model’s simulations and the observed data for crop phenology (With less than 2 days variation in 50% onset of flowering), grain and biomass yield (Root mean square error; RMSE 336 kg ha−1 and 649 kg ha−1, respectively), and leaf area index (LAI) (RMSE 0.28 & normalized RMSE; nRMSE 6.69%). The model effectively captured the nitrate-N (NO3−-N) dynamics in the soil profile, exhibiting a remarkable concordance with observed data, as evident from its low RMSE = 12.39 kg ha−1 and nRMSE = 13.69%. Moreover, as it successfully simulated the N balance in the production system, the nitrate leaching and ammonia volatilization pattern as described by the model are highly useful to understand these critical phenomena under both conventional tillage (CT) and CA-based Zero Tillage (ZT) treatments.ConclusionThe study concludes that the DSSAT-CERES-Wheat model has significant potential to assess the impacts of tillage and nitrogen management practices on crop growth, yield, and soil nitrogen dynamics in the western Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) region. By providing reliable forecasts within the growing season, this modeling approach can facilitate better planning and more efficient resource management.Future implicationsThe successful implementation of the DSSAT-CERES-Wheat model in this study highlights its applicability in assessing crop performance and soil dynamics. Future research should focus on expanding the model’s capabilities by reducing its sensitivity to initial soil nitrogen levels to refine its predictions further. Moreover, the model’s integration with decision support systems and real-time data can enhance its usefulness in aiding agricultural decision-making and supporting sustainable crop management practices.

Abstract Background WHO publishes public health and clinical guidelines to guide Member States in achieving better health outcomes. Furthermore, WHO’s Thirteenth General Programme of Work for 2019–2023 prioritizes strengthening its normative functional role and uptake of normative and standard-setting products, including guidelines at the country level. Therefore, understanding WHO guideline uptake by the Member States, particularly the low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is of utmost importance for the organization and scholarship. Methods We conducted a scoping review using a comprehensive search strategy to include published literature in English between 2007 and 2020. The review was conducted between May and June 2021. We searched five electronic databases including CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase and Scopus. We also searched Google Scholar as a supplementary source. The review adhered to the PRISMA-ScR (PRISMA extension for scoping reviews) guidelines for reporting the searches, screening and identification of evaluation studies from the literature. A narrative synthesis of the evidence around key barriers and challenges for WHO guideline uptake in LMICs is thematically presented. Results The scoping review included 48 studies, and the findings were categorized into four themes: (1) lack of national legislation, regulations and policy coherence, (2) inadequate experience, expertise and training of healthcare providers for guideline uptake, (3) funding limitations for guideline uptake and use, and (4) inadequate healthcare infrastructure for guideline compliance. These challenges were situated in the Member States’ health systems. The findings suggest that governance was often weak within the existing health systems amongst most of the LMICs studied, as was the guidance provided by WHO’s guidelines on governance requirements. This challenge was further exacerbated by a lack of accountability and transparency mechanisms for uptake and implementation of guidelines. In addition, the WHO guidelines themselves were either unclear and were technically challenging for some health conditions; however, WHO guidelines were primarily used as a reference by Member States when they developed their national guidelines. Conclusions The challenges identified reflect the national health systems’ (in)ability to allocate, implement and monitor the guidelines. Historically this is beyond the remit of WHO, but Member States could benefit from WHO implementation guidance on requirements and needs for successful uptake and use of WHO guidelines.

We investigate the onset of gyrotactic bioconvection in a porous fluid layer subject to convective force under the effect of high-frequency oscillation. Differential equations governing the flow for the thermal vibrational bioconvection are formulated using the time-averaging scheme. The instability threshold is investigated for the cases of no-slip boundaries using the Darcy model. The Galerkin technique is invoked to tackle the Eigen value problem and establish an approximation to the analytical results. The instability criterion is analyzed for the non-oscillatory convection along with the relationship between the controlling agencies. The convection is stabilized due to the Péclet number, while the increase in gyrotactic propulsion destabilizes the flow. The stabilizing nature of the vibrational force is significantly affected due to the thermally stratified porous matrix, which induces destabilization. An exciting feature is the destabilizing significance of the thermo–vibrational parameter, which arises due to the coupling of vibrational and thermal properties. Discussions of the results with their physical revelations and comparisons are presented for all the cases.

Abstract The present article focuses on the analytical approach to discuss the thermo–vibrational convection in a suspension of the active (gyrotactic) swimmers. The onset of instability criterion is investigated for the stationary and oscillatory modes of convection in a shallow fluid layer with no–slip and rigid–free walls. The eigenvalue problem is tackled by Galerkin scheme to get the desired stability diagram and the correlation between the critical Rayleigh numbers. The overstability in suspension is possible when the unstable density gradient of the gyrotactic particles is opposed by the density variation due to thermo–vibrational influence. The suspension is destabilized due to gyrotactic up–swimming while the increase in Péclet number stabilizes the system. The stabilizing influence of vertical vibration is considerably affected due to thermal gradient which destabilizes the suspension. An interesting result of this study is the influence of thermo–vibrational parameter which is associated with applied thermal and vibrational properties. We reported that the destabilizing nature of thermo–vibrational parameter becomes thermally or vibrationally governed when the suspension is heated or cooled from below. When compared to the rigid–rigid boundaries, the displayed profiles for rigid–free walls yielded less stableness in the suspension.

Abstract Background The media play a critical role in informing the public about the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the pandemic, international travel has been a highly contested subject at both the international and national levels. We examined Canadian media reporting on international travel restrictions during the pandemic, how these restrictions aligned with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), and how the narrative around international travel evolved over time. Methods We analysed articles from Canada’s top three national newspapers by circulation – The Globe and Mail, The National Post and The Toronto Star - published between Jan 1, 2020 - May 31, 2020. Our search yielded a total of 378 articles across the three newspapers. After removing duplicates and screening the remaining articles, we included a total of 62 articles for the analysis. We conducted a qualitative media content analysis by using an inductive coding approach. Results Three major themes were identified within the articles. These included: 1) The role of scientific and expert evidence in implementing travel restrictions; 2) Federal legislation, regulation and enforcement of international travel measures; and 3) Compliance with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines in travel restriction policy- and decision-making. The federal government relied primarily on scientific evidence for implementing international travel restrictions and fully exercised its powers under the Quarantine Act to enforce travel regulations and comply with the IHR 2005. The government embraced a rules-based international order by following WHO recommendations on international travel, contributing to a delay in border closure and travel restrictions until mid-March. Conclusion The media focussed significantly on international travel-related issues during the early phase of the pandemic. The dominant media narrative surrounded the need for earlier travel restrictions against international travel.

Background: Africa is facing the triple burden of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and nutritional disorders. Multilateral institutions, bilateral arrangements, and philanthropies have historically privileged economic development over health concerns. That focus has resulted in weak health systems and inadequate preparedness when there are outbreaks of diseases. This review aims to understand the politics of disease control in Africa and global health diplomacy’s (GHD’s) critical role. Methods: A literature review was done in Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google scholar search engines. Keywords included MeSH and common terms related to the topics: "Politics," "disease control," "epidemics/ endemics," and "global health diplomacy" in the "African" context. The resources also included reports of World Health Organization, United Nations and resolutions of the World Health Assembly (WHA). Results: African countries continue to struggle in their attempts to build health systems for disease control that are robust enough to tackle the frequent epidemics that plague the continent. The politics of disease control requires the crafting of cooperative partnerships to accommodate the divergent interests of multiple actors. Recent outbreaks of COVID-19 and Ebola had a significant impact on African economies. It is extremely important to prioritize health in the African development agendas. The African Union (AU) should leverage the momentum of the rise of GHD to (i) navigate the politics of global health governance in an interconnected world(ii) develop robust preparedness and disease response strategies to tackle emerging and reemerging disease epidemics in the region (iii) address the linkages between health and broader human security issues driven by climate change-induced food, water, and other insecurities (iv) mobilize resources and capacities to train health officials in the craft of diplomacy. Conclusion: The AU, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and African Centres for Disease Control should harmonize their plans and strategies and align them towards a common goal that integrates health in African development agendas. The AU must innovatively harness the practice and tools of GHD towards developing the necessary partnerships with relevant actors in the global health arena to achieve the health targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In order to investigate the effect of an enzymatic pre-treatment process for the extraction of oil from black mustard seeds (Brassica nigra) using viscozyme, the reaction parameters such as temperature, buffer-to-seed ratio and enzyme concentration were considered as determinant factors in the central composite design. Optimization was carried out according to the four-variable five-level central composite design of experiments. The effects of enzyme concentration (5–12%), temperature (40–55 °C), pH (5.0–6.0), and reaction time (1–7 h) on the free oil liberated were studied. Residual oil was collected by subjecting the treated meal to soxhlet extraction for 4 h. An enzyme dose of 7.5% (w/w), pH 5.0, 50 °C, and 5 h with constant shaking at 450 rpm were found to be opti­mal conditions. Centrifuging the mixture at 7000 rpm for 30 min separated the oil with a recovery of 71–73.1%.

Concerns over rapid transformation of global climate patterns resulted in wide deployment of renewable energy sources especially wind energy. However, intermittent nature of wind energy makes resource scheduling aspect of system operator more complex. The emerging deregulation policies have added to the complexity of scheduling problem. Therefore, treating and scheduling of wind energy on deterministic basis would result in non-optimal energy dispatch and increased operation cost over scheduling horizon. This paper focuses on optimal scheduling methodology of wind energy in day ahead market (DAM) considering expected costs due to wind uncertainty in real time (RT) spot market under deregulated market structure. This paper introduces various possible costs, namely, spot market compensation cost, additional reserve cost and rescheduling cost applicable to deviation in scheduled power from DAM to spot market. The costs can be derived from front-end information of DAM, historical and statistical estimate of RT market conditions. The effectiveness of proposed methodology is examined using IEEE 30 bus system with thermal and wind energy generators. In addition, sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the effect of incentive margin on DAM scheduling. Simulation results are presented, discussed and affirmed the effectiveness of proposed scheduling methodology.

Technological breakthroughs in renewable energy technologies (RETs) enabled them to attain grid parity thereby making them potential contenders for existing conventional resources. To examine the market participation of RETs, this paper formulates a scheduling problem accommodating energy market participation of wind- and solar-independent power producers (IPPs) treating both conventional and RETs as identical entities. Furthermore, constraints pertaining to penetration and curtailments of RETs are restructured. Additionally, an appropriate objective function for profit incurred by conventional resource IPPs through reserve market participation as a function of renewable energy curtailment is also proposed. The proposed concept is simulated with a test system comprising 10 conventional generation units in conjunction with solar photovoltaic (SPV) and wind energy generators (WEG). The simulation results indicate that renewable energy integration and its curtailment limits influence the market participation or scheduling strategies of conventional resources in both energy and reserve markets. Furthermore, load and reliability parameters are also affected.

Global warming and climate change are two key probing issues in the present context. The electricity sector and transportation sector are two principle entities propelling both these issues. Emissions from these two sectors can be offset by switching to greener ways of transportation through the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy technologies (RET). Thus, effective scheduling of both resources holds the key to sustainable practice. This paper presents a scheduling scenario-based approach in the smart grid. Problem formulation with dual objective function including both emissions and cost is developed for conventional unit commitment with EV and RET deployment. In this work, the scheduling and commitment problem is solved using the fireworks algorithm which mimics explosion of fireworks in the sky to define search space and the distance between associated sparks to evaluate global minimum. Further, binary coded fireworks algorithm is developed for the proposed scheduling problem in the smart grid. Thereafter, possible scenarios in conventional as well as smart grid are put forward. Following that, the proposed methodology is simulated using a test system with thermal generators.

Various thiazolidine-2,4-dione derivatives 3a-l possessing indole moiety were designed, synthesized using appropriate conventional heating as well as microwave irradiation methods. All the synthesized compounds were characterized physically and spectrally. The compounds were evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity, in vitro antioxidant activity and in vivo hypoglycemic activity in relation to the standard drugs. Most of the new compounds exhibited moderate activity and some showed considerable activity. Molecular docking studies were carried out using AutoDock software and revealed that compound 3b has significant binding interaction with PPARγ receptor compared with the standard ligand Rosiglitazone.

This study presents a demand side management (DSM) strategy for a cyber-physical smart distribution system (CPSDS). The proposed approach uses the price-based as well as reward-based DSM schemes as a part dual objective function. The objectives of the proposed scheduling approach comprise the profit maximisation objectives of demand response aggregator agent (DRAA) and network performance objectives of the distribution system operation agent. The same are achieved by providing incentives to the participating customers. The incentive information is communicated to responsive load agent (RLA) using cyber infrastructure (communication channels, sensors and cloud storage systems) and thus allowing customers to select the incentive program of their own choice as per their flexibility. The real-time implementation of the program is considered to have direct load control based once the event trigger acknowledgement is received by DRAA/utility from RLA for control action on responsive loads. The proposed price-based and reward-based DSM framework in CPSDS is evaluated using IEEE 37 bus test system. The simulation results of proposed dual objective price-based and reward-based mechanism are presented, discussed and compared with single objective price-based approach. The same demonstrates the improved tradeoff between techno-economic aspects of distribution system operation.

In the present study, two simple, sensitive and reproducible visible spectrophotometric methods were developed for the determination of reboxetine in pure form and in pharmaceutical formulations. The methods involve acid hydrolysis of reboxetine methane sulphonate (Reboxetine as methane sulphonate) and the product obtained was used for the estimation. Out of the two methods developed in the laboratory, the first method involves the condensation reaction of hydrolysed reboxetine methane sulphonate with ethyl acetoacetate in sulphuric acid medium and the second method involves the diazocoupling reaction of hydrolysed reboxetine methane sulphonate with diazotized p-sulphanilic acid in alkaline medium. They have absorption maxima at 400 nm and 430 nm respectively and obey Beer’s law in the concentration ranges of 0.5 - 0.3 μgmL-1 and 1.0 - 7.5 μgmL-1 respectively. Results of analysis were validated statistically and by recovery studies. The apparent molar absorptivity values (∈max) obtained are 7.549 x 104 L mol-1 cm-11 and 2.656x104 Lmol-1cm-1 respectively. Both these have correlation coefficient value of 0.9999. The proposed methods have good precision and accuracy.

Purpose: To assess the ocular blood flow in Diabetic and nonDiabetic Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) patients. Design: Prospective comparative study. Material and Methods: A total 100 eyes of 50 POAG patients was included in the study and divided into two groups, Group 1 (25 POAG patients without Diabetes mellitus) and Group 2 (25 POAG patients with Diabetes mellitus). Colour Doppler Imaging (CDI) of Ophthalmic artery and Central retinal artery were studied and peak systolic velocity (V max), End diastolic velocity (V min) and Resistivity Index (RI) were assessed. Results: Ocular blood flow in Group 2 showed a reduction in V max, V min and increased RI compared to Group I with a statistically significant reduction in the central retinal artery flow (V max (p=0.01), V min (p=0.07) and RI (p=0.03). Conclusion: CDI showed a significant reduction in the ocular blood flow of POAG patients with Diabetes mellitus.

As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, the preparedness of governments to respond to it will likely undergo review. A key component is the legislative capacity and authority that governments had in place or could rapidly introduce to address the social, economic and health consequences of the emergency. We review Canada's legal preparedness for public health emergencies and the use of federal legislation to address the pandemic. We provide an overview of the concept of legal preparedness, summarize the federal statutes, regulations and orders enacted, and analyze the coherence of federal activity and its relevance to provinces, territories and international health regulations. We determine that the federal government has relied on spending power rather than constitutional authority over public health or existing legislation on influencing the course of the pandemic. Although predictors of academic success have been identified in young adults, such predictors are unlikely to translate directly to an older student population, where such information is scarce. The current study aimed to examine cognitive, psychosocial, lifetime, and genetic predictors of university-level academic performance in older adults (50-79 years old). Participants were mostly female (71%) and had a greater than high school education level (M = 14.06 years, SD = 2.76), on average. Two multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. The first examined all potential predictors of grade point average (GPA) in the subset of participants who had volunteered samples for genetic analysis (N = 181). Significant predictors of GPA were then re-examined in a second multiple linear regression using the full sample (N = 329). Our data show that the cognitive domains of episodic memory and language processing, in conjunction with midlife engagement in cognitively stimulating activities, have a role in predicting academic performance as measured by GPA in the first year of study. In contrast, it was determined that age, IQ, gender, working memory, psychosocial factors, and common brain gene polymorphisms linked to brain function, plasticity and degeneration ("APOE, BDNF, COMT, KIBRA, SERT") did not influence academic performance. These findings demonstrate that ageing does not impede academic achievement, and that discrete cognitive skills as well as lifetime engagement in cognitively stimulating activities can promote academic success in older adults.
