Majorana bound states constitute one of the simplest examples of emergent non-Abelian excitations in condensed matter physics. A toy model proposed by Kitaev shows that such states can arise on the ends of a spinless $p$-wave superconducting chain. Practical proposals for its realization require coupling neighboring quantum dots in a chain via both electron tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. While both processes have been observed in semiconducting nanowires and carbon nanotubes, crossed-Andreev interaction was neither easily tunable nor strong enough to induce coherent hybridization of dot states. Here we demonstrate the simultaneous presence of all necessary ingredients for an artificial Kitaev chain: two spin-polarized quantum dots in an InSb nanowire strongly coupled by both elastic co-tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. We fine-tune this system to a sweet spot where a pair of Majorana bound states is predicted to appear. At this sweet spot, the transport characteristics satisfy the theoretical predictions for such a system, including pairwise correlation, zero charge, and stability against local perturbations of the Majorana state. While the simple system presented here can be scaled to simulate a full Kitaev chain with an emergent topological order, it can also be used imminently to explore relevant physics related to non-Abelian anyons., 35 pages, 11 figures

Utilizing dispersive gate sensing (DGS), we investigate the spin-orbit field ($\textbf{B}_{SO}$) orientation in a many-electron double quantum dot (DQD) defined in an InSb nanowire. While characterizing the inter-dot tunnel couplings, the measured dispersive signal depends on the electron charge occupancy, as well as on the amplitude and orientation of the external magnetic field. The dispersive signal is mostly insensitive to the external field orientation when a DQD is occupied by a total odd number of electrons. For a DQD occupied by a total even number of electrons, the dispersive signal is reduced when the finite external magnetic field aligns with the effective $\textbf{B}_{SO}$ orientation. This fact enables the identification of $\textbf{B}_{SO}$ orientations for different DQD electron occupancies. The $\textbf{B}_{SO}$ orientation varies drastically between charge transitions, and is generally neither perpendicular to the nanowire nor in the chip plane. Moreover, $\textbf{B}_{SO}$ is similar for pairs of transitions involving the same valence orbital, and varies between such pairs. Our work demonstrates the practicality of DGS in characterizing spin-orbit interactions in quantum dot systems, without requiring any current flow through the device.

Background In the era of potent P2Y12 inhibitors, according to current guidelines on ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), treatment with glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPI) should be limited to selected bail-out or highly thrombotic situations. Similarly, aspiration thrombectomy (AT) is downgraded in current guidelines for very selective but not routine usage. Both recommendations make the treatment of thrombus containing lesions somewhat defensive, underlining the need for an individualized approach to STEMI patients. However, data concerning current clinical practice of such approach are limited. Purpose We examined the prevalence, procedural characteristics, and predictors of GPI administration and AT usage in all-comers contemporary STEMI patients referred to primary PCI in Poland. Methods We focused on 116,873 consecutive STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI in Poland between 2015 and 2020. Results GPIs were administered in 29.3% of patients and AT was used in 11.6%, with combined treatment with GPI and AT in 6.1% of patients. There was a slight trend towards a decrease in GPI and AT usage during the analyzed years. On the opposite, there was a rapid growth of the ticagrelor/prasugrel usage rate from 6.5% in 2015 to 48.1% in 2020 (Figure 1). Patients with periprocedural GPI administration and combined strategy with GPI and AT were younger, more often men, with history of smoking and presented with cardiogenic shock on admission. They were less likely to have diabetes, chronic kidney disease and previous stroke. Occluded infarct-related artery in baseline angiography and no-reflow during PCI were the strongest independent predictors of GPI administration and combined usage of GPI and AT in a multivariate logistic regression model. Similarly, administration of ticagrelor/prasugrel was an independent predictor of both adjunctive treatment strategies (see table for details). Conclusions Despite the rapid growth of potent P2Y12 inhibitors usage in Poland in recent years, GPI and AT are selectively used at a stable level during primary PCI in highly thrombotic STEMI lesions. We systematically study three-terminal InSb-Al nanowire devices by using radio-frequency reflectometry. Tunneling spectroscopy measurements on both ends of the hybrid nanowires are performed while systematically varying the chemical potential, magnetic field and junction transparencies. Identifying the lowest-energy state allows for the construction of lowest- and zero-energy state diagrams, which show how the states evolve as a function of the aforementioned parameters. Importantly, comparing the diagrams taken for each end of the hybrids enables the identification of states which do not coexist simultaneously, ruling out a significant amount of the parameter space as candidates for a topological phase. Furthermore, altering junction transparencies filters out zero-energy states sensitive to a local gate potential. Such a measurement strategy significantly reduces the time necessary to identify a potential topological phase and minimizes the risk of falsely recognizing trivial bound states as Majorana zero modes., Main text: 12 pages, 9 figures. Clenbuterol, (RS)-1-(4-amino-3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-(tert-butylamino)ethan-1-ol, as Ventipulmin is an FDA approved β2 agonist medication for the management of airway obstruction in horses. Administration above the FDA approved doses for clenbuterol produces repartitioning effects, which have led to restrictions on its use in human athletics and Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing. Clenbuterol, however has long been used therapeutically at FDA approved doses in Harness racing. The goal of this study was to identify a withdrawal time guideline for its use at FDA approvsed dose levels in Harness racing, where horses may start at seven-day intervals. Eight healthy, moderately fit Standardbred horses (4 mares, 4 geldings, weight 491±40 kg, age 13±2 years) were administered 0.8 μg/kg of clenbuterol as Ventipulmin syrup twice daily (BID) for three days. Blood samples were collected prior to dosing and at 1, 24, 48 and 96 h post administration. Clenbuterol was quantified in all samples using the New York Drug Testing and Research Laboratory ISO-17025 Racing and Medication Testing Consortium (RMTC) accredited quantitative procedure. The lower limit of quantitation of the method was 1.0 pg/ml, and three data points at 96 h post administration were censored. One horse developed diarrhoea and data from this horse was excluded from the overall analysis. Plasma regulatory thresholds were calculated using the 95/95 tolerance method and Gauss Camp Meidell at P=0.05 and P=0.001. Horses were also evaluated for effects of clenbuterol on body composition using body mass and ultrasound measurements of rump fat thickness. There were no effects (P>0.05) of clenbuterol on any of the measures including fat mass and fat free mass and thus no repartitioning effect was observed. The pharmacokinetic data and the 96 h data set support the therapeutic use of clenbuterol in Harness horses at the FDA approved 0.8 μg/kg BID dose for three days and suggest a 41 pg/ml regulatory threshold for a 96 h withdrawal time with a P=0.001 probability of randomly exceeding this regulatory threshold.

Cobalt is a required trace element in animals, but administration in excess is considered dangerous and potentially performance enhancing in equine athletes. This study seeks to determine if cobalt may actually act as a performance enhancing drug (PED) by altering biochemical parameters related to red blood cell production as well as markers of aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance. In addition, for adequate regulation of naturally occurring substances, such as cobalt, its distribution among the population must be defined. In order to identify this distribution, plasma Cobalt was determined from 245 Standardbred horses with no cobalt supplementation from farms in New York and New Jersey, including horses at the Rutgers University Equine Science Center. Samples were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Seven healthy, race fit Standardbreds (4 geldings, 3 mares, age: 5±3 years, ~500 kg) were used for the PED experiment. An incremental graded exercise test (GXT) to measure maximal aerobic capacity (V̇O2max) and markers of performance, measurement of plasma volume and blood volume as well as the measurement of lactate, erythropoietin (EPO), and various blood haematological factors were determined 7 days prior to cobalt administration. Each horse was administered a sterile solution of cobalt salts (50 mg of elemental Co as CoCl2 in 10 ml of saline, IV) at 9 AM on three consecutive days via the jugular vein. Blood samples were obtained from the contralateral jugular vein before and at 1, 2, 4 and 24 h after administration. Plasma and blood volume were measured one day after the last dose of cobalt, and a post administration GXT was performed the next day. Horses were observed for signs of adverse effects of the cobalt administration (agitation, sweating, increased respiration, etc.). Plasma cobalt concentration increased from a pre-administration mean of 1.6±0.6 to 369±28 μg/l following 3 doses of the cobalt solution (P0.05). There were no observed adverse effects.

Simple Summary The aim of this study was to provide information about horses and ponies in equine-assisted services (EAS), particularly in the areas of selection, longevity, and retirement as little published information exists about this sector of the United States horse industry. Survey results revealed centers do use selection procedures when evaluating horses which often included initial screenings and trial periods. Horses are active in programs from anywhere less than a year to over 20 years. The greatest number of horses are active for 1–6 or 7–10 years. Horses are retired for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons include unsoundness, behavior, and other health issues. We conclude behavior, soundness, and health are key considerations when selecting and retiring horses in EAS. These areas should be focused on at an individual horse level in future research efforts. The information presented in this article helps us understand the horses in EAS programs, provides a starting point for future research, and begins to explore the unique needs of programs and horses in EAS. Abstract Little published information exists on the horses in equine-assisted services (EAS), particularly their selection, longevity, and retirement. The purpose of this study was to characterize horses and procedures used in EAS. A pilot survey was developed using focus group discussions and distributed to Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH Intl) centers in Florida (n = 45, Part I) before further modification and distribution to members of PATH Intl., American Hippotherapy Association (AHA), eagala, and Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) (n = 26,000, Part II). Response rates were 36% (Part I) and 0.7% (Part II). Centers report a median of 10 (Part I) or 9 (Part II) horses and ponies. Selection procedures included initial screening (Part I = 100%, Part II = 96%), pre-purchase or pre-donation exam (I = 64%, II = 60%), acclimation period (I = 100%, II = 84%), trial period (I = 91%, II = 90%), and other (II = 11%). Horses remained active in programs for less than a year to over 20 years with the greatest number working 7–10 (Part I) or 1–6 (Part II) yr. In Part I of the study, behavior (44%) was the leading cause of retirement followed by unsoundness (33%). In Part II, unsoundness was the highest ranked response followed by behavior. Behavior, soundness, and health emerged as key factors in horse selection and retirement. Future work should focus on investigating these issues at an individual horse level.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) releases from leaks and spills next to a large government building occurred over several decades with the most recent event occurring 20 years ago. In response to a perceived conventional vapor intrusion (VI) issue a sub-slab depressurization system (SSDS) was installed 6 years ago. The SSDS is operating within design limits and has achieved building TCE vapor concentration reductions. However, subsequent periodic TCE vapor spikes based on daily HAPSITE™ measurements indicate additional source(s). Two rounds of smoke tests conducted in 2017 and 2018 involved introduction of smoke into a sanitary sewer and storm drain manholes located on effluent lines coming from the building until smoke was observed exiting system vents on the roof. Smoke testing revealed many leaks in both the storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems within the building. Sleuthing of the VI source term using a portable HAPSITE™ indicate elevated vapor TCE levels correspond with observed smoke emanation from utility lines. In some instances, smoke odors were perceived but no leak or suspect pipe was identified suggesting the odor originates from an unidentified pipe located behind or enclosed in a wall. Sleuthing activities also found building roof materials explain some of the elevated TCE levels on the 2nd floor. A relationship was found between TCE concentrations in the roof truss area, plenum space above 2nd floor offices, and breathing zone of 2nd floor offices. Installation of an external blower in the roof truss space has greatly reduced TCE levels in the plenum and office spaces. Preferential VI pathways and unexpected source terms may be overlooked mechanisms as compared to conventional VI.

This work describes the progress of development of total core radiation power and soft X-ray (SXR) diagnostic system designed in accordance with the DEMO control requirements. Monitoring of energy loss through the separatrix is necessary for reliable plasma control. Data gathered by this system could also be helpful for studying spatial distribution of heavy impurities, MHD modes and their localization, plasma shape and position. Gas electron multiplier (GEM) technology is assessed as a base for a new radiated SXR power measurement system. The main advantages of this technology are the compactness of GEM detector, good temporal and spatial resolution, the ability to discriminate energy of incident photons and better neutron resilience than existing systems. All of these make it potentially a good candidate for SXR diagnostic system in ITER and DEMO. The scope of the study includes analysis of the feasibility of selected approaches, the design of the diagnostic system, necessary simulations and engineering considerations, and the proposal of an integration scenario. Preliminary design considerations for the GEM-sensor-based system under development have been done. Plasma radiation intensities and spectra have been simulated using data from the appropriate DEMO scenario. A concept of the photosensitive chamber has been assessed. Photoabsorption simulations with the proposed structure and parameters have been conducted and the results have been discussed.

Objective, automated early lameness detection plays an important role for animal well-being. The work in this paper uses horse locomotion data collected by wearable inertial measurement units, extracts gait cycle routines and constructs a multi-layer classifier for horse lameness detection, identification, and evaluation. Multi-layer classifier (MLC) is based on support vector machine and K-Nearest-Neighbors methods. Each layer is independently designed and works as a binary classifier. Horse gait classification and limb lameness detection and evaluation are then handled by each layer successively. Experiment results show that the MLC achieves 94 % detection accuracy and also generates superior performance than a deep convolutional neural network-based multiclass classifier in terms of various assessment criteria.

We present conductance-matrix measurements of a three-terminal superconductor-semiconductor hybrid device consisting of two normal leads and one superconducting lead. Using a symmetry decomposition of the conductance, we find that the antisymmetric components of pairs of local and nonlocal conductances match at energies below the superconducting gap, consistent with expectations based on a non-interacting scattering matrix approach. Further, the local charge character of Andreev bound states is extracted from the symmetry-decomposed conductance data and is found to be similar at both ends of the device and tunable with gate voltage. Finally, we measure the conductance matrix as a function of magnetic field and identify correlated splittings in low-energy features, demonstrating how conductance-matrix measurements can complement traditional tunneling-probe measurements in the search for Majorana zero modes., Comment: 6 + 2 pages, 4 + 2 figures

Sturkie's Avian Physiology is a highly regarded textbook for the study of comparative poultry physiology. Less well known, however, is the contribution of Paul D. Sturkie (1909-2002) as a pioneer in the experimental physiology of avian species. His seminal research on the cardiovascular and hemodynamic controls of chickens and egg-laying hens had a notable impact on the poultry industry and breeding practices of farmers. The purpose of this article is to highlight the contributions and practical insights of Paul D. Sturkie to the field of poultry science.

The Rutgers Equine Science Center is a designated Center of Excellence at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The center's mission is to promote, “Better horse care through research and education.” As part of the land-grant university system, the center is obligated to provide outreach programs to serve the equine-related community. To do so, it is best to understand the needs of those constituents. The center maintains a database of equine professionals and enthusiasts for distribution of educational and promotional material. In January 2016, a survey was conducted via email to determine the most pressing needs of the equine-related community. The survey revealed a diverse industry with 46% of respondents classifying themselves as recreational riders. Most participants (78%) were interested in horse health and nutrition (57%) information. Owners relied predominantly on veterinarians (89%), printed materials (83%), and horse-related websites (78%) for care and business information. Responders also ranked highly the five programmatic focus areas of the center, including horse health, land use, integrity of equestrian sport, environmental stewardship, and development of future leaders. The center collected comments about how it can be even more useful to the equine-related community, which will help in planning future events, research, and programming.

Effects of social isolation, sham clipping, and novel object exposure on muscular and behavioral responses were investigated in horses. Humans increase muscular tension under psychologically or physically demanding situations and thus, similar conditions were expected to alter stress responses in horses. Eight mature Standardbreds (4 mares, 4 geldings) were exposed to 3 min of social isolation (ISO), sham clipping (CLIP), novel object (NOV), and control (CON) conditions in a replicated 4×4 Latin Square experimental design with 10 min washout periods. Surface electromyography (EMG) and stress-related behaviors were recorded continuously. Median frequency (MF) and average rectified value (ARV) of the EMG signal were calculated for the first, middle, and final 10 sec of each period. EMG data were log transformed prior to analysis with a mixed model, repeated measures ANOVA. Behavior data were analyzed using a negative binomial distribution mixed model ANOVA. Significantly different means were separated using Tukey’s method. More stress-related behaviors (P < 0.05) were observed during ISO (3.25 ± 0.26, LSM ± SE) than CON (1.46 ± 0.29) or CLIP (1.50 ± 0.36). ISO tended (P = 0.054) to produce more stress-related behaviors than NOV (2.31 ± 0.28). CLIP and ISO produced higher (P < 0.05) ARV than CON or NOV in the left and right masseter. CLIP elicited the highest (P < 0.05) MF in the left and right masseter with ISO resulting in lower (P < 0.05) MF than CON. ARV was higher (P < 0.05) in the left cervical trapezius during ISO as compared to all other conditions and in the right as compared to CON and CLIP. In the right cervical trapezius, ISO elicited higher (P < 0.05) MF than CON. Increased stress-related behaviors indicate a stress response was induced. Elevated muscular activity suggests muscular tension can be used in assessing stress.

End-to-end correlated bound states are investigated in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanowires at zero magnetic field. Peaks in subgap conductance are independently identified from each wire end, and a cross-correlation function is computed that counts end-to-end coincidences, averaging over thousands of subgap features. Strong correlations in a short, $300~\mathrm{nm}$ device are reduced by a factor of four in a long, $900~\mathrm{nm}$ device. In addition, subgap conductance distributions are investigated, and correlations between the left and right distributions are identified based on their mutual information., 6+4 pages, 4+4 figures

The New Jersey horse racing industry has declined over the last 5 years as indicated by decreases in the number of racing days, stallions standing, mares bred, and foals registered. These changes were hypothesized to have potential negative consequences for veterinary practices. The objective of the survey was to investigate changes in veterinary practice revenue and staff over a five-year period. Members of the New Jersey Association of Equine Practitioners completed a survey detailing their involvement in the horse racing industry and breeding of racehorses. A response rate of 49% was achieved with 45% of respondents indicating they were involved in the horse racing industry as a veterinarian. Respondents indicated they decreased (44%), did not change (17%), or increased (39%) their number of staff because of changes in the horse racing industry over the past 5 years. In a similar manner, veterinarians reported decreases (48%), no change (22%), or increases (30%) in revenue. Practice revenue from the breeding of racehorses and its associated components either decreased (91%) or did not change (9%) over the past 5 years because of changes in the horse racing industry. Results indicate declines in the horse racing industry had minimal impact on veterinary practices involved in this sector of the industry. Veterinarians and practices involved in racehorse breeding and its associated components, in contrast, were negatively impacted by changes in the horse racing industry.

Radio-frequency (RF) reflectometry is implemented in hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowire systems designed to probe Majorana zero modes. Two approaches are presented. In the first, hybrid nanowire-based devices are part of a resonant circuit, allowing conductance to be measured as a function of several gate voltages ~40 times faster than using conventional low-frequency lock-in methods. In the second, nanowire devices are capacitively coupled to a nearby RF single-electron transistor made from a separate nanowire, allowing RF detection of charge, including charge-only measurement of the crossover from 2e inter-island charge transitions at zero magnetic field to 1e transitions at axial magnetic fields above 0.6 T, where a topological state is expected. Single-electron sensing yields signal-to-noise exceeding 3 and visibility 99.8% for a measurement time of 1 {\mu}s.

Scalable quantum processors require tunable two-qubit gates that are fast, coherent and long-range. The Heisenberg exchange interaction offers fast and coherent couplings for spin qubits, but is intrinsically short-ranged. Here, we demonstrate that its range can be increased by employing a multielectron quantum dot as a mediator, while preserving speed and coherence of the resulting spin-spin coupling. We do this by placing a large quantum dot with 50–100 electrons between a pair of two-electron double quantum dots that can be operated and measured simultaneously. Two-spin correlations identify coherent spin-exchange processes across the multielectron quantum dot. We further show that different physical regimes of the mediated exchange interaction allow a reduced susceptibility to charge noise at sweet spots, as well as positive and negative coupling strengths up to several gigahertz. These properties make multielectron dots attractive as scalable, voltage-controlled coherent coupling elements., Controllable two-qubit interactions are necessary to build a functional quantum computer. Here the authors demonstrate fast, coherent swapping of two spin states mediated by a long, multi-electron quantum dot that could act as a tunable coupler mediating interactions between multiple qubits.

Conditional-phase (cz) gates in transmons can be realized by flux pulsing computational states towards resonance with noncomputational ones. We present a 40 ns cz gate based on a bipolar flux pulse suppressing leakage (0.1%) by interference and approaching the speed limit set by exchange coupling. This pulse harnesses a built-in echo to enhance fidelity (99.1%) and is robust to long-timescale distortion in the flux-control line, ensuring repeatability. Numerical simulations matching experiment show that fidelity is limited by high-frequency dephasing and leakage by short-timescale distortion. © 2019 American Physical Society.

We study single-electron charging events in an Al/InAs nanowire hybrid system with deliberately introduced gapless regions. The occupancy of a Coulomb island is detected using a nearby radio-frequency quantum dot as a charge sensor. We demonstrate that a 1 micron gapped segment of the wire can be used to efficiently suppress single electron poisoning of the gapless region and therefore protect the parity of the island while maintaining good electrical contact with a normal lead. In the absence of protection by charging energy, the 1e switching rate can be reduced below 200 per second. In the same configuration, we observe strong quantum charge fluctuations due to exchange of electron pairs between the island and the lead. The magnetic field dependence of the poisoning rate yields a zero-field superconducting coherence length of ~ 90 nm.

Anecdotal evidence suggests high horse turnover is a concern in the field of equine assisted services (EAS) with potential negative effects on sustainability. Members of key EAS organizations (American Hippotherapy Association; Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International; eagala; Certified Horsemanship Association for a total of 26,000 recipients) were surveyed to characterize horses in EAS programs, their use, and causes of retirement. We expected respondents to indicate horses remained in their programs for relatively short periods of time and list behavior as a leading cause of retirement. The survey (QualtricsⓇ) was distributed via email using a repeat contact strategy of 4 contacts spaced 2–4 wk apart. Descriptive statistics were computed in SAS (v 9.4). Kendall's correlation with Bonferroni correction was used to analyze relationships of retirement causes and longevity with selection procedures and workload. Respondents (n = 176 completed responses; 0.14% response rate) reported 12 ± 8 (mean ± SD) horses and ponies were active in their programs. Animals ranged in age from less than 5 yr (2 ± 5% of animals in program) to 36–40 yr (0.1 ± 1.3%) with the greatest number falling between 16 and 20 yr (34% ± 22%). Donation (40 ± 34% of animals in program), purchase from private owner (23 ± 31%), and free lease (18 ± 26%) were reported as the most common means of acquiring horses and ponies. Animals had been active in the program for less than one yr (4.5 ± 12% of animals in program) to over 20 yr (4.4 ± 18%) with the greatest percentage of animals active for 1–5 yr (37 ± 35%) followed by 6–10 yr (31 ± 31%). Respondents indicated horses and ponies typically worked anywhere from 0 to 1 h/wk (0.6% of respondents) to 42–48 h/wk (0.6%) with the largest number working 4–8 h/wk (20%). When asked reasons for retiring horses and ponies, respondents ranked (1 = most frequent; 7 = least frequent) age (2, 1–3; median, IQR), behavior (2, 1–3), and unsoundness (2, 1–3) as the most frequent reasons followed by burnout (2.5, 1–4), other health issues (3, 2–3), death (4, 2–4), lease expiration (5, 3.5–5), and other reasons. Selection procedures and workload were not significantly corelated with reason for retirement or longevity. Further research is needed to understand how burnout, a behaviorally assessed state, differs from behavioral reasons for retirement and its implications. Collection and analysis of other variables, potentially at an individual animal level, is needed to further our understanding of factors contributing to horse longevity and retirement.

We introduce Cryoscope, a method for sampling on-chip baseband pulses used to dynamically control qubit frequency in a quantum processor. We specifically use Cryoscope to measure the step response of the dedicated flux control lines of two-junction transmon qubits in circuit QED processors with the temporal resolution of the room-temperature arbitrary waveform generator producing the control pulses. As a first application, we iteratively improve this step response using optimized real-time digital filters to counter the linear-dynamical distortion in the control line, as needed for high-fidelity repeatable one- and two-qubit gates based on dynamical control of qubit frequency.

We investigate the spin of a multielectron GaAs quantum dot in a sequence of nine charge occupancies, by exchange coupling the multielectron dot to a neighboring two-electron double quantum dot. For all nine occupancies, we make use of a leakage spectroscopy technique to reconstruct the spectrum of spin states in the vicinity of the interdot charge transition between a single- and a multielectron quantum dot. In the same regime we also perform time-resolved measurements of coherent exchange oscillations between the single- and multielectron quantum dot. With these measurements, we identify distinct characteristics of the multielectron spin state, depending on whether the dot's occupancy is even or odd. For three out of four even occupancies we do not observe any exchange interaction with the single quantum dot, indicating a spin-0 ground state. For the one remaining even occupancy, we observe an exchange interaction that we associate with a spin-1 multielectron quantum dot ground state. For all five of the odd occupancies, we observe an exchange interaction associated with a spin-1/2 ground state. For three of these odd occupancies, we clearly demonstrate that the exchange interaction changes sign in the vicinity of the charge transition. For one of these, the exchange interaction is negative (i.e. triplet-preferring) beyond the interdot charge transition, consistent with the observed spin-1 for the next (even) occupancy. Our experimental results are interpreted through the use of a Hubbard model involving two orbitals of the multielectron quantum dot. Allowing for the spin correlation energy (i.e. including a term favoring Hund's rules) and different tunnel coupling to different orbitals, we qualitatively reproduce the measured exchange profiles for all occupancies., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

By operating a one-electron quantum dot (fabricated between a multielectron dot and a one-electron reference dot) as a spectroscopic probe, we study the spin properties of a gate-controlled multielectron GaAs quantum dot at the transition between odd and even occupation number. We observe that the multielectron groundstate transitions from spin-1/2-like to singlet-like to triplet-like as we increase the detuning towards the next higher charge state. The sign reversal in the inferred exchange energy persists at zero magnetic field, and the exchange strength is tunable by gate voltages and in-plane magnetic fields. Complementing spin leakage spectroscopy data, the inspection of coherent multielectron spin exchange oscillations provides further evidence for the sign reversal and, inferentially, for the importance of non-trivial multielectron spin exchange correlations., Comment: 8 pages, including 4 main figures and 2 supplementary figurures

Using a singlet-triplet spin qubit as a sensitive spectrometer of the GaAs nuclear spin bath, we demonstrate that the spectrum of Overhauser noise agrees with a classical spin diffusion model over six orders of magnitude in frequency, from 1 mHz to 1 kHz, is flat below 10 mHz, and falls as $1/f^2$ for frequency $f \! \gtrsim \! 1$ Hz. Increasing the applied magnetic field from 0.1 T to 0.75 T suppresses electron-mediated spin diffusion, which decreases spectral content in the $1/f^2$ region and lowers the saturation frequency, each by an order of magnitude, consistent with a numerical model. Spectral content at megahertz frequencies is accessed using dynamical decoupling, which shows a crossover from the few-pulse regime ($\lesssim \! 16$ $\pi$-pulses), where transverse Overhauser fluctuations dominate dephasing, to the many-pulse regime ($\gtrsim \! 32$ $\pi$-pulses), where longitudinal Overhauser fluctuations with a $1/f$ spectrum dominate., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 8 pages of supplementary material, 5 supplementary figures

We operate a resonant exchange qubit in a highly symmetric triple-dot configuration using IQ-modulated RF pulses. At the resulting three-dimensional sweet spot the qubit splitting is an order of magnitude less sensitive to all relevant control voltages, compared to the conventional operating point, but we observe no significant improvement in the quality of Rabi oscillations. For weak driving this is consistent with Overhauser field fluctuations modulating the qubit splitting. For strong driving we infer that effective voltage noise modulates the coupling strength between RF drive and the qubit, thereby quickening Rabi decay. Application of CPMG dynamical decoupling sequences consisting of up to n = 32 {\pi} pulses significantly prolongs qubit coherence, leading to marginally longer dephasing times in the symmetric configuration. This is consistent with dynamical decoupling from low frequency noise, but quantitatively cannot be explained by effective gate voltage noise and Overhauser field fluctuations alone. This study tested the hypotheses that age-induced alteration in cortisol, ACTH, and glucose concentrations are due to differences in the response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and that exercise training would attenuate these differences. Six old (22.0±0.7 yr; mean±SE) and 6 young (7.3±0.6 yr) unfit Standardbred mares ran 3 graded exercise tests (GXT): before (GXT1), after 8 wk of training (GXT2), and at study end at 15 wk (GXT3). Mares trained 3 d/wk at 60% maximum heart rate. Each mare underwent 5 endocrine stimulation tests pre- and posttraining: 1) control (CON), 2) adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTHtest), 3) combined dexamethasone suppression/ACTH (DEX/ACTH), 4) dexamethasone suppression (DEX), and 5) combined DEX/corticotropin releasing factor (DEX/CRF). For CON, there was no difference in plasma cortisol between age groups pretraining (P=0.19), but young mares had a 102% higher mean (P=0.02) plasma cortisol concentration than old mares posttraining. The pretraining ACTHtest showed young mares had a 72% higher (P=0.05) overall plasma cortisol concentration compared to old. There was no overall age difference in cortisol in the posttraining ACTHtest, but old mares still had lower cortisol concentrations at 30 min during the test, suggesting decreased adrenal response to ACTH stimulation. There was no difference in cortisol response between old and young mares in DEX, DEX/ACTH, or DEX/CRF tests. Young mares had higher (P=0.02) overall plasma cortisol concentration posttraining in response to DEX/ACTH, but old mares showed no change. In CON and DEX/CRF, there were no age differences in plasma ACTH concentration, pre- or posttraining. Pretraining, there was no age difference in glucose response to DEX, but posttraining old mares had a 4% (P=0.04) lower overall plasma glucose concentration compared to young. The chronic bradycardia seen in several species after intense exercise training may be due to autonomic mechanisms, non-autonomic mechanisms, such as increased pre-load, or a combination of the two. Thirteen, healthy, unfit Standardbred mares were split into two groups: young (age 12±1 yr; mean ± standard error, n=8) and old (age 22±1 yr, n=5) to test the hypothesis that there would be age and training related differences in resting heart rate (RHR), intrinsic heart rate (IHR), maximal heart rate (HRmax) and plasma volume (PV). Transfusion data for obstetric patients are scarce. Identifying characteristics associated with red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) is of importance to better identify patients who would benefit from blood conservation strategies as the risk of alloimmunization from RBCT has the potential to affect the fetus and newborn.We conducted a retrospective cohort study using hospital administrative data to identify trends and risk factors of RBCT in obstetric patients. Data were analyzed according to the mode of delivery.A total of 45,213 deliveries were captured between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2013. A higher proportion of patients undergoing cesarean sections (C/Ss) received an RBCT (2.3%) compared to other modes of delivery (0.7% for spontaneous vaginal delivery, 1.5% for instrumental delivery; p 0.001). In addition, the risk of RBCT increased over the 7-year period for those patients undergoing C/S (relative risk [RR], 1.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14-2.15). An unavailable hemoglobin (Hb) level (RR, 12.94; 95% CI, 7.39-22.66) and Hb level of 70 to 80 g/L (RR, 7.78; 95% CI = 5.21-11.60) were strongly associated with RBCT among women undergoing C/S. Earlier gestational age at induction increased the risk of RBCT across all modes of delivery.The higher frequency of RBCT for unknown and low Hb supports the need for predelivery patient blood management at the time of delivery. The additional risk factors associated with RBCT identified may be used to develop risk stratification tools by mode of delivery to assist in the identification of patients at the highest risk of requiring RBCT.

Electron spins in gate-defined quantum dots provide a promising platform for quantum computation. In particular, spin-based quantum computing in gallium arsenide takes advantage of the high quality of semiconducting materials, reliability in fabricating arrays of quantum dots, and accurate qubit operations. However, the effective magnetic noise arising from the hyperfine interaction with uncontrolled nuclear spins in the host lattice constitutes a major source of decoherence. Low frequency nuclear noise, responsible for fast (10 ns) inhomogeneous dephasing, can be removed by echo techniques. High frequency nuclear noise, recently studied via echo revivals, occurs in narrow frequency bands related to differences in Larmor precession of the three isotopes $\mathbf{^{69}Ga}$, $\mathbf{^{71}Ga}$, and $\mathbf{^{75}As}$. Here we show that both low and high frequency nuclear noise can be filtered by appropriate dynamical decoupling sequences, resulting in a substantial enhancement of spin qubit coherence times. Using nuclear notch filtering, we demonstrate a spin coherence time ($\mathbf{T_{2}}$) of 0.87 ms, five orders of magnitude longer than typical exchange gate times, and exceeding the longest coherence times reported to date in Si/SiGe gate-defined quantum dots., 10 pages, including main text (5 figures) and supplementary information (2 figures)

Purpose To investigate the effect of tumor site, measurement precision, tumor–surrogate correlation, training data selection, model design, and interpatient and interfraction variations on the accuracy of external marker-based models of tumor position. Methods and Materials Cyberknife Synchrony system log files comprising synchronously acquired positions of external markers and the tumor from 167 treatment fractions were analyzed. The accuracy of Synchrony, ordinary-least-squares regression, and partial-least-squares regression models for predicting the tumor position from the external markers was evaluated. The quantity and timing of the data used to build the predictive model were varied. The effects of tumor–surrogate correlation and the precision in both the tumor and the external surrogate position measurements were explored by adding noise to the data. Results The tumor position prediction errors increased during the duration of a fraction. Increasing the training data quantities did not always lead to more accurate models. Adding uncorrelated noise to the external marker-based inputs degraded the tumor–surrogate correlation models by 16% for partial-least-squares and 57% for ordinary-least-squares. External marker and tumor position measurement errors led to tumor position prediction changes 0.3–3.6 times the magnitude of the measurement errors, varying widely with model algorithm. The tumor position prediction errors were significantly associated with the patient index but not with the fraction index or tumor site. Partial-least-squares was as accurate as Synchrony and more accurate than ordinary-least-squares. Conclusions The accuracy of surrogate-based inferential models of tumor position was affected by all the investigated factors, except for the tumor site and fraction index.

Purpose To evaluate Hotelling's T(2) statistic and the input variable squared prediction error (Q((X))) for detecting large respiratory surrogate-based tumor displacement prediction errors without directly measuring the tumor's position. Methods Tumor and external marker positions from a database of 188 Cyberknife Synchrony™ lung, liver, and pancreas treatment fractions were analyzed. The first ten measurements of tumor position in each fraction were used to create fraction-specific models of tumor displacement using external surrogates as input; the models were used to predict tumor position from subsequent external marker measurements. A partial least squares (PLS) model with four scores was developed for each fraction to determine T(2) and Q((X)) confidence limits based on the first ten measurements in a fraction. The T(2) and Q((X)) statistics were then calculated for every set of external marker measurements. Correlations between model error and both T(2) and Q((X)) were determined. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was applied to evaluate sensitivities and specificities of T(2), Q((X)), and T(2)∪Q((X)) for predicting real-time tumor localization errors >3 mm over a range of T(2) and Q((X)) confidence limits. Results Sensitivity and specificity of detecting errors >3 mm varied with confidence limit selection. At 95% sensitivity, T(2)∪Q((X)) specificity was 15%, 2% higher than either T(2) or Q((X)) alone. The mean time to alarm for T(2)∪Q((X)) at 95% sensitivity was 5.3 min but varied with a standard deviation of 8.2 min. Results did not differ significantly by tumor site. Conclusions The results of this study establish the feasibility of respiratory surrogate-based online monitoring of real-time respiration-induced tumor motion model accuracy for lung, liver, and pancreas tumors. The T(2) and Q((X)) statistics were able to indicate whether inferential model errors exceeded 3 mm with high sensitivity. Modest improvements in specificity were achieved by combining T(2) and Q((X)) results.
