Abstract

The paper presents and analyses the outcomes of a survey study conducted with the participation of BA and MA students in a translation programme, aimed at gaining insight into the students’ views on translation theory usefulness. It was initially assumed that theory appreciation would develop along with growing translation experience, however, the nature of the predicted correlation appeared more complex. The author attempts to determine what factors may influence the observed interconnection and affect the subjects’ opinions.

The paper offers an overview of the approaches to translating humour, with the intention of comparing the scope of interests and the selection of methods in a number of research reports (in English and in Polish). The overview focuses on the proposals concerning the translation of verbally expressed humour. The authors attempt to describe the status of humour translation studies as an emerging trend in Polish translation studies.

Abstract

This volume collects selected papers written by young translation scholars who were CETRA 2014 participants. This book analyses the heterogeneity of translational norms, diversity of cultures and the challenges of intercultural transfer. The authors analyze a wide array of source texts, from the translations of contemporary prose and audiovisual products into Brazilian, Japanese and Swedish, to renderings of texts more distant in time, such as the Bible and «Golestân» written in medieval Persian. The book also concentrates on selected meta-level issues, such as the integrity of the discipline and its language, as well as the development of translation competence. The norm-focused and culture-related framework offers considerable research potential for Translation Studies.
