We investigate near-field energy transfer between chemically synthesized quantum dots (QDs) and two-dimensional semiconductors. We fabricate devices in which electrostatically gated semiconducting monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is placed atop a homogenous self-assembled layer of core-shell CdSSe QDs. We demonstrate efficient non-radiative F\"orster resonant energy transfer (FRET) from QDs into MoS2 and prove that modest gate-induced variation in the excitonic absorption of MoS2 lead to large (~500%) changes in the FRET rate. This, in turn, allows for up to ~75% electrical modulation of QD photoluminescence intensity. The hybrid QD/MoS2 devices operate within a small voltage range, allow for continuous modification of the QD photoluminescence intensity, and can be used for selective tuning of QDs emitting in the visible-IR range., Comment: 19 Pages, 11 figures. Novel ultra-compact, electrically switchable, time-structured/pulsed, ~1-14 MeV-level neutron and photon generators have application embedded into large detector systems, especially calorimeters, for energy and operational calibration. The small sizes are applicable to permanent in-situ deployment, or able to be conveniently inserted into large high energy physics detector systems. For bench- testing of prototypes, or for detector module production testing, these compact n and gamma generators offer advantages.

Novel low index (n less than 1.3)/high light trapping cladding films consisting of nanoporous alumina (sapphire), as formed by controlled anodization of aluminum, are described. These films are mechanically hard, intrinsically very rad-hard, and have an index of refraction n sufficiently small to triple the light capture of waveshifting or scintillating fibers and transparent plastic, glass or quartz core fibers. The low indices enable light-piping of water Cerenkov light. Applications are in Energy, Intensity, and Cosmic/Astroparticle detectors.

Quartz capillary tube/fibers have been filled with anthracene by a melt and vacuum inbibition process to fabricate a scintillating core fiber. Other polcyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH), such as p-Terphenyl (pTP), stilbene or naphthalene are also well-suited to scintillating/shifting fiber cores. The resulting scintillating core with quartz cladding capillary fibers (250-750 micron cores) had a high specific light output when tested with muons (8 p.e. per MIP). These PAH core quartz capillary cladding scintillating/shifting optical fibers have the potential of high radiation resistance, fast response, and are applicable to many energy and intensity frontier experiments.

A novel calorimeter sensor for electron, photon and hadron energy measurement based on Secondary Emission(SE) to measure ionization is described, using sheet-dynodes directly as the active detection medium; the shower particles in an SE calorimeter cause direct secondary emission from dynode arrays comprising the sampling or absorbing medium. Data is presented on prototype tests and Monte Carlo simulations. This sensor can be made radiation hard at GigaRad levels, is easily transversely segmentable at the mm scale, and in a calorimeter has energy signal rise-times and integration comparable to or better than plastic scintillation/PMT calorimeters. Applications are mainly in the energy and intensity frontiers.

From a detailed study, including polarization dependence, of the normal state angle-resolved photoemission spectra for Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$, we find only one CuO$_2$ band related feature. All other spectral features can be ascribed either to umklapps from the superlattice or to ``shadow bands''. Even though the dispersion of the peaks looks like band theory, the lineshape is anomalously broad and no evidence is found for bilayer splitting. We argue that the ``dip feature'' in the spectrum below $T_c$ arises not from bilayer splitting, but rather from many body effects., Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 3 uuencoded postscript figures
