Background: Gabon faced COVID-19 with more than 49,000 individuals tested positive and 307 recorded fatalities since the first reported case in 2020. A popular hypothesis is that the low rate of cases and deaths in the country was attributed to the use of medicinal plants in prevention and treatment. This study aimed to document the plants used for remedial and preventive therapies by the Gabonese population during the COVID-19 pandemic and to pinpoint specific potential plant species that merit further investigation.Methods: An ethnobotanical survey involving 97 participants was conducted in Libreville. Traditional healers and medicinal plant vendors were interviewed orally using a semi-structured questionnaire sheet, while the general population responded to an online questionnaire format. Various quantitative indexes were calculated from the collected data and included the relative frequency of citation (RFC), use value (UV), informant consensus factor (ICF), relative importance (RI), and popular therapeutic use value (POPUT). One-way ANOVA and independent samples t-test were used for statistical analyses. p-values ≤0.05 were considered significant.Results: The survey identified 63 plant species belonging to 35 families. Prevalent symptoms treated included fever (18%), cough (16%), fatigue (13%), and cold (12%). The demographic data highlighted that 52.58% of male subjects (p > 0.94) aged 31–44 years were enrolled in the survey, of which 48.45% (p < 0.0001) and 74.73% (p < 0.99) of informants had university-level education. In addition, the results indicated that a total of 66% of the informants used medicinal plants for prophylaxis (34%), for both prevention and treatment (26%), exclusively for treatment (3%), and only for prevention (3%) while suffering from COVID-19, against 34% of the participants who did not use plants for prevention or treatment. Annickia chlorantha, Citrus sp., Alstonia congensis, Zingiber officinale, and Carica papaya emerged as the most commonly cited plants with the highest RFC (0.15–0.26), UV (0.47–0.75), and RI (35.72–45.46) values. Most of these plants were used either individually or in combination with others.Conclusion: The survey reinforces the use of traditional medicine as a method to alleviate COVID-19 symptoms, thereby advocating for the utilization of medicinal plants in managing coronavirus infections.

Peritonitis by perforation of the gall bladder of typhic origin is a rare condition. In Côte d'Ivoire, no studies to our knowledge have addressed the vesicular complications of typhoid fever in children. The aim of this work was to describe the epidemic-clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of the perforation of the gall bladder of typhic origin in subjects under 15 years of age. In 6 years, five children showed a vesicular perforation of typhic origin or 9.4% of peritonites of typhic origin. They were 5 boys with an average age of 07.4 years 5–11 years. The children were from low socioeconomic backgrounds. No history was noted. Clinical examination revealed peritoneal syndrome. X-ray of the abdomen without preparation carried out in all children had objectified a diffuse greyness. Leucocytosis was present in all cases. Treatment in all children initially consisted of resuscitation and antibiotic therapy with the 3rd generation cephalosporin and an imidazole. Surgical exploration revealed gangrene and perforated gallbladder without damage to other organs or the presence of stones. A cholecystectomy was performed. The following procedures were simple in 4 patients. A patient died of sepsis following postoperative peritonitis by biliary fistula. Perforation of the gall bladder of typhic origin is rare in children. It is usually discovered at the stage of peritonitis. The treatment combines antibiotic therapy and cholecystectomy. Systematic screening should reduce the progression to this complication.

INTRODUCTION: La paralysie obstétricale du plexus brachial est une affection relativement rare mais qui n´a pas disparu malgré les importants progrès en obstétrique. L´objectif de cette étude était de décrire les aspects épidémiologiques, thérapeutiques et évolutifs de cette affection dans notre contexte. METHODES: analyse rétrospective sur deux ans des dossiers de nouveau-nés ayant présenté une paralysie obstétricale du plexus brachial et pris en charge au Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bouaké. Les enfants reçus après l´âge de 3 mois n´ont pas été inclus. Les variables étudiées étaient d´ordre épidémiologique, thérapeutique et évolutif. RESULTATS: soixante patients ont été colligés, soit une fréquence de 28,5%. Il y avait 31 (52%) filles. L´âge moyen était de 8 jours [J0 et J35]. Les mères étaient multipares dans 94% des cas. L´accouchement a eu lieu dans un centre de santé dans 97% des cas. Tous les enfants étaient nés à terme avec 57 (95%) présentations céphaliques. L´accouchement était eutocique dans 74% des cas. Le poids moyen de naissance était de 3604 g [2150g et 4500g]. Il y avait 47 cas (78%) de paralysie C5-C6. L´immobilisation coude au corps associée à la rééducation a été réalisée chez 51 enfants (85%). La rééducation a été réalisée immédiatement chez 9 enfants (15%). La récupération fonctionnelle du membre lésé a été complète chez 50 enfants (83%) après un recul de 6 mois. CONCLUSION: la paralysie obstétricale du plexus brachial demeure une affection obstétricale d´actualité. Son traitement conservateur, seule alternative dans notre contexte donne de bons résultats.

Background: Heavy schoolbag is known to cause health problems for school children. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of carrying heavy schoolbags on the musculoskeletal pain among primary school children of the two subsystems in Yaounde, Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in primary schools in Yaounde. A total of 457 school-children (8.2 ± 2.2 years) were included, 202 from the French-speaking subsystem, and 255 from the English-speaking subsystem. Parameters studied included weight, height, and schoolbag weight. A questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic information and potential musculoskeletal pain in three regions: back, shoulders, and neck. Results: The mean weight of children and their bags was 28.4 ± 8.2 kg and 5.2 ± 2.3 kg respectively. More than 50% of schoolchildren in the two subsystems carried a schoolbag weighing more than 15% of body weight. The back (38%) was the least affected area in comparison to the shoulders (58.6%) and neck (42.4%) (p < 0.001). Carrying heavy bags and walking to school was associated with pain in the back, shoulders, and neck. School-children in the French-speaking subsystem had lower risk (adjusted Odds Ratio 0.438, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 0.295-0.651; p < 0.001) to develop a sore neck compared to peers from the English-speaking subsystem. Conclusion: Carrying heavy schoolbags is associated to musculoskeletal pain in schoolchildren. The means moving to and from school is a main risk factor of developing musculoskeletal pain. French-speaking schoolchildren develop less neck pain than English-speaking schoolchildren.
