1. Enhancing Brain Tumor Classification Using TrAdaBoost and Multi-Classifier Deep Learning Approaches

Abstract: Brain tumors pose a serious health threat due to their rapid growth and potential for metastasis. While medical imaging has advanced significantly, accurately identifying and characterizing these tumors remains a challenge. This study addresses this challenge by leveraging the innovative TrAdaBoost methodology to enhance the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS2020) dataset, aiming to improve the efficiency and accuracy of brain tumor classification. Our approach combines state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms, including the Vision Transformer (ViT), Capsule Neural Network (CapsNet), and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) such as ResNet-152 and VGG16. By integrating these models within a multi-classifier framework, we harness the strengths of each approach to achieve more robust and reliable tumor classification. A novel decision template is employed to synergistically combine outputs from different algorithms, further enhancing classification accuracy. To augment the training process, we incorporate a secondary dataset, "Brain Tumor MRI Dataset," as a source domain, providing additional data for model training and improving generalization capabilities. Our findings demonstrate a high accuracy rate in classifying tumor versus non-tumor images, signifying the effectiveness of our approach in the medical imaging domain. This study highlights the potential of advanced machine learning techniques to contribute significantly to the early and accurate diagnosis of brain tumors, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

2. Automating Quantum Software Maintenance: Flakiness Detection and Root Cause Analysis

Abstract: Flaky tests, which pass or fail inconsistently without code changes, are a major challenge in software engineering in general and in quantum software engineering in particular due to their complexity and probabilistic nature, leading to hidden issues and wasted developer effort. We aim to create an automated framework to detect flaky tests in quantum software and an extended dataset of quantum flaky tests, overcoming the limitations of manual methods. Building on prior manual analysis of 14 quantum software repositories, we expanded the dataset and automated flaky test detection using transformers and cosine similarity. We conducted experiments with Large Language Models (LLMs) from the OpenAI GPT and Meta LLaMA families to assess their ability to detect and classify flaky tests from code and issue descriptions. Embedding transformers proved effective: we identified 25 new flaky tests, expanding the dataset by 54%. Top LLMs achieved an F1-score of 0.8871 for flakiness detection but only 0.5839 for root cause identification. We introduced an automated flaky test detection framework using machine learning, showing promising results but highlighting the need for improved root cause detection and classification in large quantum codebases. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 4. Let Students Take the Wheel: Introducing Post-Quantum Cryptography with Active Learning

Abstract: Quantum computing presents a double-edged sword: while it has the potential to revolutionize fields such as artificial intelligence, optimization, healthcare, and so on, it simultaneously poses a threat to current cryptographic systems, such as public-key encryption. To address this threat, post-quantum cryptography (PQC) has been identified as the solution to secure existing software systems, promoting a national initiative to prepare the next generation with the necessary knowledge and skills. However, PQC is an emerging interdisciplinary topic, presenting significant challenges for educators and learners. This research proposes a novel active learning approach and assesses the best practices for teaching PQC to undergraduate and graduate students in the discipline of information systems. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we compare two instructional methods: 1) traditional faculty-led lectures and 2) student-led seminars, both integrated with active learning techniques such as hands-on coding exercises and Kahoot games. The effectiveness of these methods is evaluated through student assessments and surveys. Second, we have published our lecture video, slides, and findings so that other researchers and educators can reuse the courseware and materials to develop their own PQC learning modules. We employ statistical analysis (e.g., t-test and chi-square test) to compare the learning outcomes and students' feedback between the two learning methods in each course. Our findings suggest that student-led seminars significantly enhance learning outcomes, particularly for graduate students, where a notable improvement in comprehension and engagement is observed. Moving forward, we aim to scale these modules to diverse educational contexts and explore additional active learning and experiential learning strategies for teaching complex concepts of quantum information science., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: Long-lived PFKFB3-expressing β-cells are dysfunctional partly because of prevailing glycolysis that compromises metabolic coupling of insulin secretion. Their accumulation in type 2 diabetes (T2D) appears to be related to the loss of apoptotic competency of cell fitness competition that maintains islet function by favoring constant selection of healthy winner cells. To investigate how PFKFB3 can disguise the competitive traits of dysfunctional loser β-cells, we analyzed the overlap between human β-cells with bona fide loser signature across diabetes pathologies using the HPAP scRNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics of PFKFB3-positive β-cells from nPOD T2D pancreata. The overlapping transcriptional profile of loser β-cells was represented by down-regulated ribosomal biosynthesis and genes encoding for mitochondrial respiration. PFKFB3-positive loser β-cells had the reduced expression of HLA class I and II genes. Gene-gene interaction analysis revealed that PFKFB3 rs1983890 can interact with the anti-apoptotic gene MAIP1 implicating positive epistasis as a mechanism for prolonged survival of loser β-cells in T2D. Inhibition of PFKFB3 resulted in the clearance of dysfunctional loser β-cells leading to restored glucose tolerance in the mouse model of T2D.

Abstract: This paper describes Auriga's @Work team and their robot, developed at Shahid Beheshti University Faculty of Electrical Engineering's Robotics and Intelligent Automation Lab for RoboCup 2024 competitions. The robot is designed for industrial tasks, optimizing efficiency in repetitive or hazardous environments. It features a 4-wheel Mecanum system for omnidirectional movement and a 5-degree-of-freedom manipulator arm with a 3D-printed gripper for object handling and navigation. The electronics include custom boards with ESP32 microcontrollers and an Nvidia Jetson Nano for real-time control. 9. LAR-IQA: A Lightweight, Accurate, and Robust No-Reference Image Quality Assessment Model

Abstract: Recent advancements in the field of No-Reference Image Quality Assessment (NR-IQA) using deep learning techniques demonstrate high performance across multiple open-source datasets. However, such models are typically very large and complex making them not so suitable for real-world deployment, especially on resource- and battery-constrained mobile devices. To address this limitation, we propose a compact, lightweight NR-IQA model that achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on ECCV AIM UHD-IQA challenge validation and test datasets while being also nearly 5.7 times faster than the fastest SOTA model. Our model features a dual-branch architecture, with each branch separately trained on synthetically and authentically distorted images which enhances the model's generalizability across different distortion types. To improve robustness under diverse real-world visual conditions, we additionally incorporate multiple color spaces during the training process. We also demonstrate the higher accuracy of recently proposed Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) for final quality regression as compared to the conventional Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs). Our evaluation considering various open-source datasets highlights the practical, high-accuracy, and robust performance of our proposed lightweight model. 10. MSLIQA: Enhancing Learning Representations for Image Quality Assessment through Multi-Scale Learning

Abstract: No-Reference Image Quality Assessment (NR-IQA) remains a challenging task due to the diversity of distortions and the lack of large annotated datasets. Many studies have attempted to tackle these challenges by developing more accurate NR-IQA models, often employing complex and computationally expensive networks, or by bridging the domain gap between various distortions to enhance performance on test datasets. In our work, we improve the performance of a generic lightweight NR-IQA model by introducing a novel augmentation strategy that boosts its performance by almost 28\%. This augmentation strategy enables the network to better discriminate between different distortions in various parts of the image by zooming in and out. Additionally, the inclusion of test-time augmentation further enhances performance, making our lightweight network's results comparable to the current state-of-the-art models, simply through the use of augmentations.

Abstract: Lung cancer stands as the preeminent cause of cancer-related mortality globally. Prompt and precise diagnosis, coupled with effective treatment, is imperative to reduce the fatality rates associated with this formidable disease. This study introduces a cutting-edge deep learning framework for the classification of lung cancer from CT scan imagery. The research encompasses a suite of image pre-processing strategies, notably Canny edge detection, and wavelet transformations, which precede the extraction of salient features and subsequent classification via a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). The optimization process is further refined using the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA). The methodology put forth has attained an impressive training and testing accuracy of 99.82\%, underscoring its efficacy and reliability in the accurate diagnosis of lung cancer.

12. Design Proteins Using Large Language Models: Enhancements and Comparative Analyses

Abstract: Pre-trained LLMs have demonstrated substantial capabilities across a range of conventional natural language processing (NLP) tasks, such as summarization and entity recognition. In this paper, we explore the application of LLMs in the generation of high-quality protein sequences. Specifically, we adopt a suite of pre-trained LLMs, including Mistral-7B1, Llama-2-7B2, Llama-3-8B3, and gemma-7B4, to produce valid protein sequences. All of these models are publicly available.5 Unlike previous work in this field, our approach utilizes a relatively small dataset comprising 42,000 distinct human protein sequences. We retrain these models to process protein-related data, ensuring the generation of biologically feasible protein structures. Our findings demonstrate that even with limited data, the adapted models exhibit efficiency comparable to established protein-focused models such as ProGen varieties, ProtGPT2, and ProLLaMA, which were trained on millions of protein sequences. To validate and quantify the performance of our models, we conduct comparative analyses employing standard metrics such as pLDDT, RMSD, TM-score, and REU. 13. On the (higher multipoles) variance asymmetry in the cosmic microwave background

Abstract: We have studied the cosmic microwave background (CMB) map looking for features beyond cosmological isotropy. We began by tiling the CMB variance map (which are produced by different smoothing scales) with stripes of different sizes along the most prominent dipole direction. We were able to confirm previous findings regarding the significance of the dipole. Furthermore, we discovered that some of the higher multipoles exhibit significance comparable to the dipole which naturally depends on the smoothing scales. At the end, we discussed this result having an eye on look-elsewhere-effect. Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. 15. Manipulation Effect on Lumbar Kinematics in Patients with Unilateral Innominate Rotation and Comparison with Asymptomatic Subjects

Abstract: Background: Lumbar motion analysis is used as a clinical method in the diagnosis and treatment of low back pain (LBP). So far, no studies have shown if manipulating the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) will change spinal kinematics. Objective: The main objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of SIJ manipulation on the lumbar kinematics in subjects with innominate rotation and to compare lumbar kinematics among experiment and control groups. Material and Methods: This study was a quasi-experiment-control trial study. 21 LBP patients with anterior or posterior innominate rotations in experiment group and 22 asymptomatic subjects in control group were evaluated. Lumbar kinematic variables (LKV) include lumbar range of motion (ROM) and speed, lumbar lateral flexion and rotation asymmetry were evaluated using Qualysis Track Manager (QTM) twice within two days in control group, and these parameters with pelvic asymmetry and disability were tested before and after intervention in the experiment group. Results: While pre-intervention experiment group exhibited significantly lower lumbar lateral flexion (p=0.0001), rotation (p=0.008) ROM and lower lateral flexion speed (p=0.014), post-intervention experiment group exhibited significantly lower lumbar lateral flexion (p=0.01) ROM in comparison with control group. Pelvic asymmetry (p=0.049) and disability (p=0.01) significantly decreased in the experiment group after manipulation, but LKV did not change significantly after the intervention (p˃0.05). Conclusion: Experiment groups had different lumbar kinematics in comparison with control group before and after SIJ manipulation. Abstract: In the domain of Music Information Retrieval (MIR), Automatic Music Transcription (AMT) emerges as a central challenge, aiming to convert audio signals into symbolic notations like musical notes or sheet music. This systematic review accentuates the pivotal role of AMT in music signal analysis, emphasizing its importance due to the intricate and overlapping spectral structure of musical harmonies. Through a thorough examination of existing machine learning techniques utilized in AMT, we explore the progress and constraints of current models and methodologies. Despite notable advancements, AMT systems have yet to match the accuracy of human experts, largely due to the complexities of musical harmonies and the need for nuanced interpretation. This review critically evaluates both fully automatic and semi-automatic AMT systems, emphasizing the importance of minimal user intervention and examining various methodologies proposed to date. By addressing the limitations of prior techniques and suggesting avenues for improvement, our objective is to steer future research towards fully automated AMT systems capable of accurately and efficiently translating intricate audio signals into precise symbolic representations. This study not only synthesizes the latest advancements but also lays out a road-map for overcoming existing challenges in AMT, providing valuable insights for researchers aiming to narrow the gap between current systems and human-level transcription accuracy.

Abstract: Data annotation, the practice of assigning descriptive labels to raw data, is pivotal in optimizing the performance of machine learning models. However, it is a resource-intensive process susceptible to biases introduced by annotators. The emergence of sophisticated Large Language Models (LLMs) presents a unique opportunity to modernize and streamline this complex procedure. While existing research extensively evaluates the efficacy of LLMs, as annotators, this paper delves into the biases present in LLMs when annotating hate speech data. Our research contributes to understanding biases in four key categories: gender, race, religion, and disability with four LLMs: GPT-3.5, GPT-4o, Llama-3.1 and Gemma-2. Specifically targeting highly vulnerable groups within these categories, we analyze annotator biases. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive examination of potential factors contributing to these biases by scrutinizing the annotated data. We introduce our custom hate speech detection dataset, HateBiasNet, to conduct this research. Additionally, we perform the same experiments on the ETHOS (Mollas et al. 2022) dataset also for comparative analysis. Abstract: Markov games (MGs) and multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) are studied to model decision making in multi-agent systems. Traditionally, the objective in MG and MARL has been risk-neutral, i.e., agents are assumed to optimize a performance metric such as expected return, without taking into account subjective or cognitive preferences of themselves or of other agents. However, ignoring such preferences leads to inaccurate models of decision making in many real-world scenarios in finance, operations research, and behavioral economics. Therefore, when these preferences are present, it is necessary to incorporate a suitable measure of risk into the optimization objective of agents, which opens the door to risk-sensitive MG and MARL. In this paper, we systemically review the literature on risk sensitivity in MG and MARL that has been growing in recent years alongside other areas of reinforcement learning and game theory. We define and mathematically describe different risk measures used in MG and MARL and individually for each measure, discuss articles that incorporate it. 19. xMIL: Insightful Explanations for Multiple Instance Learning in Histopathology

Abstract: Multiple instance learning (MIL) is an effective and widely used approach for weakly supervised machine learning. In histopathology, MIL models have achieved remarkable success in tasks like tumor detection, biomarker prediction, and outcome prognostication. However, MIL explanation methods are still lagging behind, as they are limited to small bag sizes or disregard instance interactions. We revisit MIL through the lens of explainable AI (XAI) and introduce xMIL, a refined framework with more general assumptions. We demonstrate how to obtain improved MIL explanations using layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) and conduct extensive evaluation experiments on three toy settings and four real-world histopathology datasets. Our approach consistently outperforms previous explanation attempts with particularly improved faithfulness scores on challenging biomarker prediction tasks. Finally, we showcase how xMIL explanations enable pathologists to extract insights from MIL models, representing a significant advance for knowledge discovery and model debugging in digital histopathology. 20. Differentially Private Machine Learning-powered Combinatorial Auction Design

Abstract: We present a new approach to machine learning-powered combinatorial auctions, which is based on the principles of Differential Privacy. Our methodology guarantees that the auction mechanism is truthful, meaning that rational bidders have the incentive to reveal their true valuation functions. We achieve this by inducing truthfulness in the auction dynamics, ensuring that bidders consistently provide accurate information about their valuation functions. Our method not only ensures truthfulness but also preserves the efficiency of the original auction. This means that if the initial auction outputs an allocation with high social welfare, our modified truthful version of the auction will also achieve high social welfare. We use techniques from Differential Privacy, such as the Exponential Mechanism, to achieve these results. Additionally, we examine the application of differential privacy in auctions across both asymptotic and non-asymptotic regimes.

Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. The discovery of this system implies an increase in the expected rate of neutron star-black hole mergers with electromagnetic counterparts and provides further evidence for compact objects existing within the purported lower mass gap., Comment: 45 pages (10 pages author list, 13 pages main text, 1 page acknowledgements, 13 pages appendices, 8 pages bibliography), 17 figures, 16 tables. 29. Sponge: Inference Serving with Dynamic SLOs Using In-Place Vertical Scaling

Abstract: Mobile and IoT applications increasingly adopt deep learning inference to provide intelligence. Inference requests are typically sent to a cloud infrastructure over a wireless network that is highly variable, leading to the challenge of dynamic Service Level Objectives (SLOs) at the request level. This paper presents Sponge, a novel deep learning inference serving system that maximizes resource efficiency while guaranteeing dynamic SLOs. Sponge achieves its goal by applying in-place vertical scaling, dynamic batching, and request reordering. Specifically, we introduce an Integer Programming formulation to capture the resource allocation problem, providing a mathematical model of the relationship between latency, batch size, and resources. We demonstrate the potential of Sponge through a prototype implementation and preliminary experiments and discuss future works.

Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The widespread presence of hateful languages on social media has resulted in adverse effects on societal well-being. As a result, addressing this issue with high priority has become very important. Hate speech or offensive languages exist in both explicit and implicit forms, with the latter being more challenging to detect. Current research in this domain encounters several challenges. Firstly, the existing datasets primarily rely on the collection of texts containing explicit offensive keywords, making it challenging to capture implicitly offensive contents that are devoid of these keywords. Secondly, common methodologies tend to focus solely on textual analysis, neglecting the valuable insights that community information can provide. In this research paper, we introduce a novel dataset OffensiveLang, a community based implicit offensive language dataset generated by ChatGPT 3.5 containing data for 38 different target groups. Despite limitations in generating offensive texts using ChatGPT due to ethical constraints, we present a prompt-based approach that effectively generates implicit offensive languages. To ensure data quality, we evaluate the dataset with human. Additionally, we employ a prompt-based zero-shot method with ChatGPT and compare the detection results between human annotation and ChatGPT annotation. 32. CURE: Simulation-Augmented Auto-Tuning in Robotics

Abstract: Robotic systems are typically composed of various subsystems, such as localization and navigation, each encompassing numerous configurable components (e.g., selecting different planning algorithms). Once an algorithm has been selected for a component, its associated configuration options must be set to the appropriate values. Configuration options across the system stack interact non-trivially. Finding optimal configurations for highly configurable robots to achieve desired performance poses a significant challenge due to the interactions between configuration options across software and hardware that result in an exponentially large and complex configuration space. These challenges are further compounded by the need for transferability between different environments and robotic platforms. Data efficient optimization algorithms (e.g., Bayesian optimization) have been increasingly employed to automate the tuning of configurable parameters in cyber-physical systems. However, such optimization algorithms converge at later stages, often after exhausting the allocated budget (e.g., optimization steps, allotted time) and lacking transferability. This paper proposes CURE -- a method that identifies causally relevant configuration options, enabling the optimization process to operate in a reduced search space, thereby enabling faster optimization of robot performance. CURE abstracts the causal relationships between various configuration options and robot performance objectives by learning a causal model in the source (a low-cost environment such as the Gazebo simulator) and applying the learned knowledge to perform optimization in the target (e.g., Turtlebot 3 physical robot). Abstract: Digital twins (DTs) are revolutionizing the biotechnology industry by enabling sophisticated digital representations of biological assets, microorganisms, drug development processes, and digital health applications. However, digital twinning at micro and nano scales, particularly in modeling complex entities like bacteria, presents significant challenges in terms of requiring advanced Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure and computing approaches to achieve enhanced accuracy and scalability. In this work, we propose a novel framework that integrates the Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) with advanced machine learning techniques, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNN) and federated learning (FL), to effectively tackle the identified challenges. Within our framework, IoBNT devices are deployed to gather image-based biological data across various physical environments, leveraging the strong capabilities of CNNs for robust machine vision and pattern recognition. Subsequently, FL is utilized to aggregate insights from these disparate data sources, creating a refined global model that continually enhances accuracy and predictive reliability, which is crucial for the effective deployment of DTs in biotechnology. The primary contribution is the development of a novel framework that synergistically combines CNN and FL, augmented by the capabilities of the IoBNT. This novel approach is specifically tailored to enhancing DTs in the biotechnology industry. The results showcase enhancements in the reliability and safety of microorganism DTs, while preserving their accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed framework excels in energy efficiency and security, offering a user-friendly and adaptable solution. This broadens its applicability across diverse sectors, including biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, as well as clinical and hospital settings.

Abstract: Robots are experiencing a revolution as they permeate many aspects of our daily lives, from performing house maintenance to infrastructure inspection, from efficiently warehousing goods to autonomous vehicles, and more. This technical progress and its impact are astounding. This revolution, however, is outstripping the capabilities of existing software development processes, techniques, and tools, which largely have remained unchanged for decades. These capabilities are ill-suited to handling the challenges unique to robotics software such as dealing with a wide diversity of domains, heterogeneous hardware, programmed and learned components, complex physical environments captured and modeled with uncertainty, emergent behaviors that include human interactions, and scalability demands that span across multiple dimensions. Looking ahead to the need to develop software for robots that are ever more ubiquitous, autonomous, and reliant on complex adaptive components, hardware, and data, motivated an NSF-sponsored community workshop on the subject of Software Engineering for Robotics, held in Detroit, Michigan in October 2023. The goal of the workshop was to bring together thought leaders across robotics and software engineering to coalesce a community, and identify key problems in the area of SE for robotics that that community should aim to solve over the next 5 years. Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biological drugs can interfere with the disease process. In this study, the effect of β-D-mannuronic acid (M2000) as a novel non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects together with antioxidant effects was evaluated on IL17, RORγt, IL4 and GATA3 gene expression in 12 RA patients. Previously, M2000 driven from sodium alginate (natural product; patented, DEU: 102016113018.4) has shown a notable efficacy in experimental models of multiple sclerosis, RA and nephrotic syndrome. This study was performed on 12 patients with RA who had an inadequate response to conventional treatments. During this trial, patients were permitted to continue the conventional therapy excluding NSAIDs. M2000 was administered orally at a dose of 500 mg twice daily for 12 weeks. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected before and after treatment to evaluate the expression levels of IL4, GATA3, IL17 and RORγt. The gene expression results showed that M2000 has a potent efficacy, so that it could not only significantly decrease IL17 and RORγt levels but also increase IL4 and GATA3 levels after 12 weeks of treatment. Moreover, the gene expression results were in accordance with the clinical and preclinical assessments. In conclusion, M2000 as a natural novel agent has therapeutic and immunosuppressive properties on RA patients (identifier: IRCT2014011213739N2). Abstract: Web 3.0 represents the next stage of Internet evolution, aiming to empower users with increased autonomy, efficiency, quality, security, and privacy. This evolution can potentially democratize content access by utilizing the latest developments in enabling technologies. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth survey of enabling technologies in the context of Web 3.0, such as blockchain, semantic web, 3D interactive web, Metaverse, Virtual reality/Augmented reality, Internet of Things technology, and their roles in shaping Web 3.0. We commence by providing a comprehensive background of Web 3.0, including its concept, basic architecture, potential applications, and industry adoption. Subsequently, we examine recent breakthroughs in IoT, 5G, and blockchain technologies that are pivotal to Web 3.0 development. Following that, other enabling technologies, including AI, semantic web, and 3D interactive web, are discussed. Utilizing these technologies can effectively address the critical challenges in realizing Web 3.0, such as ensuring decentralized identity, platform interoperability, data transparency, reducing latency, and enhancing the system's scalability. Finally, we highlight significant challenges associated with Web 3.0 implementation, emphasizing potential solutions and providing insights into future research directions in this field.

47. Microscale stress-geometry interactions in an additively manufactured NiTi cardiovascular stent: A synchrotron dual imaging tomography and diffraction study

Abstract: This study explores cardiovascular stents fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF); an emerging method to offer patient-specific customisable parts. Here, the shape memory alloy NiTi, in a near equiatomic composition, was investigated to deconvolve the material response from macroscopic component effects. Specifically, stress-geometry interactions were revealed, in-situ, for a minaturised cardiovascular stent subjected to an externally applied cylindrical stress whilst acquiring synchrotron X-ray imaging and diffraction data. The approach enabled the collection of spatially resolved micromechanical deformation data; the formation of stress-induced martensite and R-phase was evident, occurring in locations near junctions between stent ligaments where stress concentrations exist. In the as-fabricated condition, hardness maps were obtained through nanoindentation, demonstrating that the localised deformation and deformation patterning is further controlled by porosity and microstructural heterogeneity. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) supported these observations, showing a finer grain structure near stent junctions with higher associated lattice curvature. These features, combined with stress concentrations when loaded will initiate localised phase transformations. If the stent was subjected to repeated loading, representing in-vivo conditions, these regions would be susceptible to cyclic damage through transformation memory loss, leading to premature component failure. This study highlights the challenges that must be addressed for the post-processing treatment of LABF-processed stents for healthcare-related applications.

48. HEET: A Heterogeneity Measure to Quantify the Difference across Distributed Computing Systems

Abstract: Although system heterogeneity has been extensively studied in the past, there is yet to be a study on measuring the impact of heterogeneity on system performance. For this purpose, we propose a heterogeneity measure that can characterize the impact of the heterogeneity of a system on its performance behavior in terms of throughput or makespan. We develop a mathematical model to characterize a heterogeneous system in terms of its task and machine heterogeneity dimensions and then reduce it to a single value, called Homogeneous Equivalent Execution Time (HEET), which represents the execution time behavior of the entire system. We used AWS EC2 instances to implement a real-world machine learning inference system. Performance evaluation of the HEET score across different heterogeneous system configurations demonstrates that HEET can accurately characterize the performance behavior of these systems. In particular, the results show that our proposed method is capable of predicting the true makespan of heterogeneous systems without online evaluations with an average precision of 84%. This heterogeneity measure is instrumental for solution architects to configure their systems proactively to be sufficiently heterogeneous to meet their desired performance objectives.

49. On sample complexity of conditional independence testing with Von Mises estimator with application to causal discovery

Abstract: Motivated by conditional independence testing, an essential step in constraint-based causal discovery algorithms, we study the nonparametric Von Mises estimator for the entropy of multivariate distributions built on a kernel density estimator. We establish an exponential concentration inequality for this estimator. We design a test for conditional independence (CI) based on our estimator, called VM-CI, which achieves optimal parametric rates under smoothness assumptions. Leveraging the exponential concentration, we prove a tight upper bound for the overall error of VM-CI. This, in turn, allows us to characterize the sample complexity of any constraint-based causal discovery algorithm that uses VM-CI for CI tests. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first sample complexity guarantee for causal discovery for continuous variables. Furthermore, we empirically show that VM-CI outperforms other popular CI tests in terms of either time or sample complexity (or both), which translates to a better performance in structure learning as well.

50. An Alternative Approach to Inverse Z-Transform of Rational Functions

Abstract: Our paper introduces a novel method for calculating the inverse $\mathcal{Z}$-transform of rational functions. Unlike some existing approaches that rely on partial fraction expansion and involve dividing by $z$, our method allows for the direct computation of the inverse $\mathcal{Z}$-transform without such division. Furthermore, our method expands the rational functions over real numbers instead of complex numbers. Hence, it doesn't need algebraic manipulations to obtain a real-valued answer. Furthermore, it aligns our method more closely with established techniques used in integral, Laplace, and Fourier transforms. In addition, it can lead to fewer calculations in some cases.
