Abstract

This volume is the result of a symposium entitled'Variation in Life Histories: Genetics and Evolutionary Processes'sponsored by the Program in Evolutionary Ecology and Behavior of the University of Iowa and held in Iowa City on October 13 and 14, 1980. Prompted by a recent upsurge of interest in the evolution of life histories, we chose this topic because of the obvious association between life history traits and Darwinian fit­ ness. If such an association were to be fruitfully investigated, it would require the closer cooperation of population and evolutionary ecologists and quantitative and population geneticists. To encourage such an association, our symposium had four major aims: first, to facilitate intellectual exchange across disciplines among an array of biologists studying life histories; second, to encourage exploration of genetic variance and covari­ ance for life history traits; third, to consider the ecological background for genetic vari­ ability; and finally, to facilitate a comparative overview both within and among species. Obviously such broad aims cannot be met totally in a single volume, but we think we have succeeded reasonably well in providing a representative and nourishing intel­ lectual feast. We see this book as a stimulus to the coordination of future efforts in an important and expanding area of inquiry. We have divided the book into six sections.

2. Variations in Self-Paced Behaviors in Stutterers and Nonstutterers

Abstract

Ten stuttering and 10 nonstuttering subjects performed self-paced rhythmic tasks with the finger and jaw and were asked to repeat “ah.” The tasks were performed at three rates: “comfortable” rate; and “slightly higher” and “slightly lower” than comfortable, but still in the comfortable range. The stutterers performed each of the three tasks more slowly than the nonstutterers and were less variable than nonstutterers. The reduced rates and more constrained variability of the stutterers were interpreted as manifestations of less flexible systems, which may be more susceptible to breakdown.

3. Genetic analysis of indices of corneal power and corneal astigmatism in human populations with varying incidences of strabismus

Abstract

Heritability estimates for corneal power were found to be high and similar for two populations which differed in their incidence of esotropia. This similarity suggest (1) that genetic differences for corneal power do not contribute to the difference in heritability for spherical refractive error reported for these populations and (2) that this character is not a critical variable contributing to the pathophysiology of esotropia. Heritability estimates for corneal astigmatism were, in most cases, rather low. The pattern of population and sex differences among heritability estimates was consistent with those previously reported for cylindrical refractive error. These population differences in heritability suggest that they contribute to population differences found for cylindrical refractive error.
