Physics reports 808, 1 - 74 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.physrep.2019.02.002, Free-electron lasers produce extremely brief, coherent, and bright laser-like photon pulses that allow to image matter at atomic resolution and at timescales faster than the characteristic atomic motions. In pulses of about 50 femtoseconds duration they provide as many photons as one gets in 1 s from modern storage ring synchrotron radiation facilities. FLASH, the Free-Electron Laser at DESY in Hamburg was the first FEL in the XUV/soft X-ray spectral range, started operation as a user facility in summer 2005, and was for almost 5 years the only short wavelength FEL facility worldwide. Hence, most of the technological developments as well as the scientific experiments performed by the user community were new and unique as outlined below. FLASH was driving FEL science and technology and paved the way for many new ideas. Because of using a linear accelerator in superconducting RF technology FLASH combines the extreme peak brightness characteristic for FELs with very high average brightness. It also was the prototype for the European XFEL located in the Hamburg metropolitan area, which started user operation in summer 2017.The present review provides an overview of the progress made with accelerator science and technology at FLASH for the production of stable beams of well characterized electron pulses, reduction of the pulse jitter to the femtosecond level, generation of ultra-short photon pulses, adequate synchronization of the machine parameters with the experiment, and demonstrating advanced FEL schemes using variable gap undulators. Much of this was done in the very exciting early days of FEL science when it was even not clear if the FEL concept could be realized for X-rays. The development and the operation of the FLASH user facility is described, as well as the techniques developed to make use of the new type of X-ray beams including photon beam diagnostics and damage studies of the optical elements. The review emphasizes breakthrough experiments which demonstrated that many of the ideas collected in the world-wide discussion of the scientific case of free-electron lasers could indeed be realized and they often produced unexpected results. The first experiment on Coulomb explosion of Xe clusters performed in 2002 was a clear demonstration of the feasibility of experiments with free-electron laser beams and opened a lively discussion in the atom, molecular and optical physics community (AMO).Time resolved single-shot single-particle imaging, summarized in the slogan “Take movies instead of pictures”, was one of the most popular science drivers for the construction of free-electron X-ray lasers. As a first step in this direction experiments using a highly focused beam of FLASH demonstrated that pictures of 2 dimensional objects could be reconstructed from single-shot single-particle diffraction patterns. Explosion dynamics of nano-size particles hit by an intense FEL pulse were studied. This method, called “diffraction before destruction”, is now very successfully applied with hard X-rays and, to a large extent, solves the radiation damage problem in structural biology. A long term goal is to determine the 3 dimensional structure of a large molecule from a single-shot diffraction pattern. Along these lines the 3D architecture of free Ag nanoparticles could be determined from one diffraction pattern only using soft X-rays from FLASH.To understand light–matter interactions in this new parameter space a number of pioneering AMO experiments have been performed including non-linear interactions in atoms, molecules and clusters. Multiphoton photoionization processes in the presence of intense optical fields have been studied, as well as photo-absorption of XUV photon energies on molecular ions important for astrophysics. The nature of formation and breaking of molecular bonds was investigated in VUV pump–VUV probe experiments using a reaction microscope and a specific delay line. As an example the process of ultrafast isomerization of acetylene molecules C$_2$H$_2$ triggered by single photon excitation has been studied. The structural changes during the isomerization process were visualized and an isomerization time of 52 +/- 15 fs was found.Clusters of variable size, which can be produced routinely, allow distinguish between inter- and intra-atomic effects and are considered model systems for the investigation of light–matter interactions in multi-atom objects. As an example such experimental studies provided instructive data for benchmarking theoretical models describing cluster ionization in intense short-wavelength laser pulses. The combination of single-shot single-particle imaging for determination of the cluster size with spectroscopy was crucial for success of these experiments. The investigations could later be extended to very large Xe clusters providing new insights into the nanoplasma formation and explosion dynamics of such large systemsFrom early on, studies of high energy density plasmas and warm dense matter have been one of the most prominent research fields in building the scientific case for X-ray free-electron lasers. A good understanding of this complex regime between cold solids and hot dilute plasmas is important for high pressure studies, applied materials studies, inertial fusion, and planetary interiors. With the first observation of saturable absorption of an L-shell transition in Aluminum and pioneering studies of warm dense hydrogen FLASH kicked off research of matter in extreme conditions with free-electron lasers.In condensed matter experiments the emphasis is not so much on the peak power of the FEL beam and extreme focusing, but on beam properties like polarization and pulse duration. The sample has to stay intact in the beam over hours and the number of photons per pulse impinging on the sample has to be limited to avoid space charge effects. After demonstrating the possibility to record single-shot resonant magnetic scattering images with FELs the first time-resolved demagnetization study using a pump–probe approach with an IR-pump pulse and an XUV probe pulse to record a resonant magnetic scattering pattern as a function of pump–probe delay was also performed at FLASH.Free-electron lasers offer the possibility to extend the well-established X-ray spectroscopic techniques for the investigation of the static electronic structure of matter to probing the evolution of the electronic structure in the time domain after controlled excitation. At FLASH first time resolved core level photoemission (TR-XPS) experiments have been performed which are element specific and provide information on the dynamics of the local charge state around a specific center. Using 198 eV photons in a surface study at Ir single crystals it was possible to separate surface and bulk contributions in the Ir 4f levels with sufficient instrumental resolution. Time and angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) is a very powerful tool to study non-equilibrium electron dynamics of condensed matter systems, since it offers the possibility to follow the dynamics of the full band structure of a material. In another pioneering experiment the photo-induced dynamics of the Mott insulator 1T-TaS$_2$ was studied at FLASH by investigating the dynamics of the Ta 4f photoemission. The formation of a commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) leads to a splitting of the Ta 4f level which decreases first on a sub-picosecond time scale due to electronic melting of the CCDW and afterwards on a picosecond lifetime due to electron–phonon coupling. This leads to transfer of energy from the electronic system to the lattice and a partial melting of the periodic lattice distortions accompanying the periodic charge arrangement in the CCDW phase.In materials science X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy are among the most powerful spectroscopies to study the electronic structure of matter. The wavelength of the radiation is scanned over certain element specific resonances which at FLASH 1 can only be done by scanning the electron energy. This is time consuming and makes the experiments difficult. Nevertheless, the first time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) experiment was done at FLASH 1 in order to study non-thermal melting of a silicon sample. From a comparison of the observed valence electronic structure at different times after the photoexcitation it became clear that in the melting process in the first few ps a non-equilibrium low density liquid state is reached. The existence of such a metastable low density liquid state had been postulated for many systems that show tetragonal bonding in the crystalline phase like water for example, but spectroscopically the time-resolved silicon XES data taken at FLASH verified its existence for the first time. Scientific reports 7(1), 2431(2017). doi:10.1038/s41598-017-02184-3, Free-electron lasers are unique sources of intense and ultra-short x-ray pulses that led to major scientific breakthroughs across disciplines from matter to materials and life sciences. The essential element of these devices are micrometer-sized electron bunches with high peak currents, low energy spread, and low emittance. Advanced FEL concepts such as seeded amplifiers rely on the capability of analyzing and controlling the electron beam properties with few-femtosecond time resolution. One major challenge is to extract tomographic slice parameters instead of projected electron beam properties. Here, we demonstrate that a radio-frequency deflector in combination with a dipole spectrometer not only allows for single-shot extraction of a seeded FEL pulse profile, but also provides information on the electron slice emittance and energy spread. Direct seeding with a high-harmonic generation (HHG) source can improve the spectral, temporal, and coherence properties of a free-electron laser (FEL) and shall reduce intensity and arrival-time fluctuations. In the seeding experiment sFLASH at the extreme ultraviolet FEL in Hamburg FLASH, which operates in the self-amplified spontaneous emission mode (SASE), the 21st harmonic of an 800 nm laser is refocused into a dedicated seeding undulator. For seeding, the external light field has to overcome the noise level of SASE; therefore, an efficient coupling between seed pulse and electron bunch is mandatory. Thus, an HHG beam with a proper divergence, width, beam quality, Rayleigh length, pointing stability, single-shot pulse energy, and stability in the 21st harmonic is needed. Here, we present the setup of the HHG source that seeds sFLASH at 38.1 nm, the optimization procedures, and the necessary diagnostics.

New journal of physics 20, 013010 (2017). doi:10.1088/1367-2630/aa9b4c, We report on a direct time-domain measurement of the temporal properties of a seeded free-electron laser pulse in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range. Utilizing the oscillating electromagnetic field of terahertz radiation, a single-shot THz streak-camera was applied for measuring the duration as well as spectral phase of the generated intense XUV pulses. The experiment was conducted at FLASH, the free electron laser user facility at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. In contrast to indirect methods, this approach directly resolves and visualizes the frequency chirp of a seeded FEL pulse. The reported diagnostic capability is a prerequisite to tailor amplitude, phase and frequency distributions of FEL beams on demand. A few-femtosecond X-ray streak camera has been realized using a pump–probe scheme that samples the transient response of matter to ionizing soft X-ray radiation in the presence of an intense synchronized terahertz field. Borrowing its concept from attosecond metrology, the femtosecond X-ray streak camera fills the gap between conventional streak cameras with typical resolutions of hundreds of femtoseconds and streaking techniques operating in the sub-femtosecond regime. Its single-shot capability permits the duration and time structure of individual X-ray pulses to be determined. For several classes of experiments in time-resolved spectroscopy, diffraction or imaging envisaged with novel accelerator- and laser-based short-pulse X-ray sources this knowledge is essential, but represents a major challenge to X-ray metrology. Here we report on the single-shot characterization of soft X-ray pulses from the free-electron laser facility FLASH. A streak camera for characterizing the ultrashort X-ray pulses produced by a free-electron laser is reported. The scheme has a single-shot capability, a resolution of a few femtoseconds and is expected to become a useful tool for X-ray metrology, including experiments involving time-resolved spectroscopy and imaging.

The Photo Injector Test Facility at DESY Zeuthen (PITZ) was built to test and optimize electron sources for Free Electron Lasers and future linear colliders. The focus is on the production of intense electron beams with minimum transverse emittance and short bunch length as required for FEL operation. The experimental setup includes a 1.5 cell L-band gun cavity with coaxial RF coupler, a solenoid for space charge compensation, a laser capable to generate long pulse trains with variable temporal and spatial pulse shape, an UHV photo cathode exchange system, and an extensive diagnostics section. This contribution will give an overview on the facility and will mainly discuss the measurements of the electron beam transverse phase space. This will include measurements of the transverse and longitudinal laser profile, beam charge as a function of RF phase, and transverse emittance as a function of different parameters. The corresponding measurements of momentum and momentum spread as well as the RF commissioning results will be summarized. As a first application of the PITZ electron source it will be installed at the TESLA Test Facility Free Electron Laser at DESY Hamburg in autumn 2003.

The Photo Injector Test facility at DESY Zeuthen (PITZ) was built to develop electron sources for the TESLA Test Facility Free Electron Laser and future linear colliders. The main goal is to study the production of minimum transverse emittance beams with short bunch length at medium charge (∼1 nC). The facility includes a 1.5 cell L-band cavity with coaxial RF coupler, a solenoid for space charge compensation, a laser capable to generate long pulse trains, an UHV photo cathode exchange system, and different diagnostics tools. Besides an overview of the facility, its main components and their commissioning, this contribution will concentrate on the first measurements at PITZ with photoelectrons. This will include measurements of the transverse and longitudinal laser profile, charge and quantum efficiency, momentum and momentum spread, transverse electron beam profiles at different locations and first results on transverse emittance.

We assume the presence of an initial light wave with wavelength λ l which may be provided either by an external source such as an optical laser, or by the spontaneously emitted undulator radiation which is captured in the optical cavity. Following the terminology in laser physics, one speaks of an FEL amplifier if the lasing process is initiated by seed radiation, and of an FEL oscillator if the lasing process starts from spontaneous radiation. The bunches make very many passages through the undulator.

The physical and technological challenges of FELs become quite demanding with decreasing wavelength, but in recent years X-ray FELs with wavelengths in the Angstrom regime (1 A \(=\) 0.1 nm \(=\,10^{-10}\,\)m) have become a reality with the successful commissioning and operation of the “Linac Coherent Light Source” LCLS [1], the world’s first FEL providing atomic resolution. In this chapter, we discuss the most important aspects and challenges of X-ray FELs and present some of the excellent experimental results achieved at LCLS and the second facility of this kind, the “Spring-8 Angstrom Compact free-electron LAser” SACLA [2]. Low-gain FEL oscillators in the X-ray regime have been proposed [3] but not yet demonstrated, they are not considered here. Comprehensive information and technical details on X-ray FELs are found in the design reports of LCLS [4] and the European XFEL [5]. Further valuable information is presented in a review article by Huang and Kim [6].

The realistic description of FELs operating in the high-gain regime has to be based on a three-dimensional theory. The dependencies of the electron beam current density and of the light wave on the transverse coordinates x and y must be taken into account. Betatron oscillations of the electrons and diffraction of the light wave play an important role.

The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts, and links to other fields of physics are provided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the most important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, space charge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The world’s first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give an impression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremely intense radiation in the Angstrøm regime. The appendices contain supplementary material and more involved calculations.

There are basically two ways to build a high-power FEL. At infrared and optical wavelengths an optical resonator is utilized and the FEL radiation pulse passes a short undulator magnet very many times in close spatial overlap with an electron bunch. In each passage the light intensity grows by just a few per cent but after very many round trips a large overall amplification is achieved. A striking example is the infrared FEL at the Thomas Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News, Virginia, USA where an average FEL beam power of more than 10 kW has been achieved at wavelengths of 6 resp. 1.6 μm [1]. It is even possible to reach laser saturation in an FEL equipped with an optical cavity, but one has to realize that near saturation the initially uniform particle distribution inside the bunch acquires the microbunch structure discussed below.

For wavelengths in the extreme ultraviolet and X-ray regime the start-up of the FEL process by seed radiation is hampered by the lack of lasers with the desired wavelength. Seeding by a high harmonic of an optical or infrared laser is a possibility which has been realized in recent years, see Sect. 7.4, where also other seeding schemes are described. The process of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) permits the start-up of lasing at an arbitrary wavelength, without the need of external radiation.

In the first part of this chapter we want to exploit the third-order differential equation for the amplitude of the FEL wave in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the properties and peculiarities of high-gain free-electron lasers.

The idea to use a long linear accelerator (linac) for providing the drive beam for an X-ray free-electron laser was conceived at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center SLAC. In the Linac Coherent Light Source LCLS (see Chap. 9) a 1 km long section of the SLAC electron linac, which has been the major facility for elementary particle physics at Stanford since 1965, delivers the beam needed in the FEL.

We present a short description of the theoretical and numerical activity for the design of the VUV FEL proposed at DESY. The FEL will be a 6 nm SASE device driven by a 1 GeV beam from the superconducting rf accelerator which is under development by the international TESLA collaboration.

Improved performance of Free Electron Laser (FEL) light sources in terms of timing stability, pulse shape and spectral properties of the amplified FEL pulses is of interest in many fields of science. A promising scheme is direct seeding with High-Harmonic Generation (HHG) in a noble gas target. A Free-Electron-Laser seeded by an external XUV-source is planned for FLASH II at DESY in Hamburg. The requirements for the XUV/soft X-ray source can be summarized as follows: A repetition rate of at least 100 kHz in a 10 Hz burst is needed at variable wavelengths from 10 to 40 nm and pulse energies of several nJ within single harmonics. This application requires a laser amplifier system with exceptional parameters, mJ-level pulse energy, sub-10 fs pulse duration at 100 kHz (1 MHz) burst repetition rate. A new OPCPA system is under development in order to meet these requirements, and very promising results has been achieved. In parallel to this development, a new High- Harmonic Generation concept is necessary to sustain the high average power of the driving laser system and for the need of high conversion efficiencies. Highest conversion efficiency in High Harmonic Generation has been shown using gas-filled capillary targets, up to now. For our application, only a free-jet target is applicable for high harmonic generation at high repetition rate, to overcome damage threshold limitations of HHG target optics. A new multi-jet target is under development and first tests show a good performance of this nozzle configuration.

The photoinjector test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ), was built to develop and optimize photoelectron sources for superconducting linacs for high-brilliance, short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL) applications like the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH) and the European x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). In this paper, the detailed characterization of two laser-driven rf guns with different operating conditions is described. One experimental optimization of the beam parameters was performed at an accelerating gradient of about 43 MV/m at the photocathode and the other at about 60 MV/m. In both cases, electron beams with very high phase-space density have been demonstrated at a bunch charge of 1 nC and are compared with corresponding simulations. The rf gun optimized for the lower gradient has surpassed all the FLASH requirements on beam quality and rf parameters (gradient, rf pulse length, repetition rate) and serves as a spare gun for this facility. The rf gun studied with increased accelerating gradient at the cathode produced beams with even higher brightness, yielding the first demonstration of the beam quality required for driving the European XFEL: The geometric mean of the normalized projected rms emittance in the two transverse directions was measured to be 1.26±0.13 mm mrad for a 1-nC electron bunch. When a 10% charge cut is applied excluding electrons from those phase-space regions where the measured phase-space density is below a certain level and which are not expected to contribute to the lasing process, the normalized projected rms emittance is about 0.9 mm mrad.

Published online 16 November 2005 Groupe SERA; Many scientific disciplines ranging from physics, chemistry and biology to material sciences, geophysics and medical diagnostics need a powerful X-ray source with pulse lengths in the femtosecond range [1-4]. This would allow, for example, time-resolved observation of chemical reactions with atomic resolution. Such radiation of extreme intensity, and tunable over a wide range of wavelengths, can be accomplished using high-gain free-electron lasers (FEL) [5-10]. Here we present results of the first successful operation of an FEL at a wavelength of 32 nm, with ultra-short pulses (25 fs FWHM), a peak power at the Gigawatt level, and a high degree of transverse and longitudinal coherence. The experimental data are in full agreement with theory. This is the shortest wavelength achieved with an FEL to date and an important milestone towards a user facility designed for wavelengths down to 6 nm. With a peak brilliance exceeding the state-of-the-art of synchrotron radiation sources [4] by seven orders of magnitude, this device opens a new field of experiments, and it paves the way towards sources with even shorter wavelengths, such as the Linac Coherent Light Source [3] at Stanford, USA, and the European X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility [4] in Hamburg, Germany.

The photoinjector at Zeuthen is based on a 1.5-cell L-band rf cavity with coaxial rf coupler equipped with emittance compensating solenoids, a laser capable to generate long pulse trains, an UHV photo cathode exchange system, and various diagnostics tools. The current goal of PITZ is a full characterization of the electron source, which will be installed at the TESLA Test Facility Free Electron Laser (TTF2-FEL) in autumn 2003. In the running periods before the gun is delivered toTTF2-FEL, the rf performance and the beam parameters will be measured in detail. The results presented in this contribution contain the measurements of dark current, driving laser parameters, beam charge, beam size along the facility, transverse emittance, momentum and momentum spread. The photo injector test facility at DESY Zeuthen (PITZ) was built to develop, operate and optimize photo injectors for future free electron lasers and linear colliders. First photo electrons were produced in January 2002. An extensive conditioning work on the rf gun has been done in order to achieve high gradients for different pulse lengths and repetition rates. To increase the efficiency and safety aspects of the rf commissioning an Automatic Conditioning Program (ACP) was developed. In addition, a Data Aquisition system (DAQ) which enables a deeper analysis of the commissioning work was realized. The conditioning procedures, the specific diagnostic elements and the achieved results are described. Furthermore, dark current measurements under different conditions are presented.

We present experimental evidence that the free-electron laser at the TESLA Test Facility has reached the maximum power gain of 107 in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region at wavelengths between 80 and 120 nm. At saturation the FEL emits short pulses with GW peak power and a high degree of transverse coherence. The radiation pulse length can be adjusted between 30 fs and 100 fs. Radiation spectra and fluctuation properties agree with the theory of high gain, single-pass free-electron lasers starting from shot noise.

We present the first observation of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) in a free-electron laser (FEL) in the Vacuum Ultraviolet regime at 109 nm wavelength (11 eV). The observed free-electron laser gain (approx. 3000) and the radiation characteristics, such as dependency on bunch charge, angular distribution, spectral width and intensity fluctuations all corroborate the existing models for SASE FELs., 6 pages including 6 figures; e-mail: joerg.rossbach@desy.de

A summary of error considerations and related observations during HERA commissioning are presented. Focus is on those kinds of errors which are essential and specific for high energy colliders with particles stored in two different rings.

In the In1-cSbc alloys the nuclear spin relaxation of Sb is measured using the TDPAD technique on the 340 mu s isomer 117mSb which is produced and aligned by the nuclear reaction 115In( alpha ,2n). The temperatures and compositions studied are: at T=900K, 0

The nuclear spin relaxation rate R has been studied in liquid alloys Pb1-CXC with X=Li, As, Ag, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Au, Tl and Bi at various concentrations C, and for X=In, Sb, Bi as a function of temperature T at C=0.5. The 47 mu s isomer 207mPo, for which the quadrupolar contribution to R, RQ, is dominant, was used as the probe nucleus; it was produced and aligned by the nuclear reaction 206Pb ( alpha , 3n) and the relaxation rate was measured by the perturbed angular distribution technique. For most of the alloys studied here the contribution to RQ due to density fluctuations, RQNN, dominates. Thus these data complement the earlier measurements by the authors of alloys where the concentration fluctuation contribution, RQCC, dominated. They confirm the earlier findings that the magnitude of RQ in alloys is essentially determined by the valence difference between the partner elements and that the long-range components of the interaction are decisive for quadrupolar relaxation (i.e. distances larger than the nearest-neighbour distance).
