This paper introduces a sophisticated approach to network security, with a primary emphasis on utilizing deep learning for intrusion detection. In real-world scenarios, the high dimensionality of training data poses challenges for simple deep learning models and can lead to vanishing gradient issues with complex neural networks. Additionally, uploading network traffic data to a central server for training raises privacy concerns. To tackle these issues, the paper introduces a Residual Network (ResNet)-based deep learning model trained using a federated learning approach. The ResNet effectively tackles the vanishing gradient problem, while federated learning enables multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or clients to engage in joint training without sharing their data with third parties. This approach enhances accuracy through collaborative learning while maintaining privacy. Experimental results on the X-IIoTID dataset indicate that the proposed model outperforms conventional deep learning and machine learning methods in terms of accuracy and other metrics used for evaluation. The Industrial IoT system often struggles to identify malignant traffic and may cause disruption in the flow of work or even hazardous situations. The previously described techniques to identify such intrusions work well but not enough to be implemented in such environments where it is very difficult to identify malignant traffic in loads of benign ones. Hence, an intrusion detection system is needed that works well with very highly unbalanced datasets. Therefore, we developed a transformer model that gives a high accuracy and combined it with a boosting module that decreases false negatives, which is highly required. This model is applied to the UNSW-2018-IoT-Botnet dataset, which is publicly available in the cloudstor network. Thus, the classified traffic identified as malignant is eliminated from the system using prevention techniques. The paper also extends the model to classify among five different traffics for the same dataset, in which some of the traffics are very difficult to distinguish, such as DoS and DDoS traffic. Connected vehicle fleets have formed significant component of industrial internet of things scenarios as part of Industry 4.0 worldwide. The number of vehicles in these fleets has grown at a steady pace. The vehicles monitoring with machine learning algorithms has significantly improved maintenance activities. Predictive maintenance potential has increased where machines are controlled through networked smart devices. Here, benefits are accrued considering uptimes optimization. This has resulted in reduction of associated time and labor costs. It has also provided significant increase in cost benefit ratios. Considering vehicle fault trends in this research predictive maintenance problem is addressed through hybrid deep learning-based ensemble method (HDLEM). The ensemble framework which acts as predictive analytics engine comprises of three deep learning algorithms viz modified cox proportional hazard deep learning (MCoxPHDL), modified deep learning embedded semi supervised learning (MDLeSSL) and merged LSTM (MLSTM) networks. Both sensor as well as historical maintenance data are collected and prepared using benchmarking methods for HDLEM training and testing. Here, times between failures (TBF) modeling and prediction on multi-source data are successfully achieved. The results obtained are compared with stated deep learning models. This ensemble framework offers great potential towards achieving more profitable, efficient and sustainable vehicle fleet management solutions. The introduction of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has led to major changes in the industry. Thanks to machine data, business process management methods and techniques could also be applied to them. However, one data source has so far remained untouched: The network data of the machines. In the business environment, process mining, for example, has already been carried out based on network data, but the IIoT, with its particular protocols such as OPC UA, has yet to be investigated. With the help of design science research and on the shoulders of CRISP-DM, we first develop a framework for process mining in the IIoT in this paper. We then apply the framework to real-world IIoT network traffic data and evaluate the outcome and performance of our approach in detail. This paper discusses the design and implementation of a portable IoT station. Communication and data synchronization issues in several installations are addressed here, making possible a detailed analysis of the entire system during its operation. The system operator requires a synchronized data stream, combining multiple communication protocols into one single time stamp. The hardware selected for the portable IoT station complies with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) industrial standards. A short discussion regarding interface customization shows how easily the hardware can be modified so that it is integrated with almost any system. A programmable logic controller enables the Node-RED to be utilized. This open-source middleware defines operations for each global variable nominated in the Modbus register. Two applications are presented and discussed in this paper; each application has a distinct methodology utilized to publish and visualize the acquired data. The portable IoT station is highly customizable, consisting of a modular structure and providing the best platform for future research and development of dedicated algorithms. This paper also demonstrates how the portable IoT station can be implemented in systems where time-based data synchronization is essential while introducing a seamless implementation and operation. The Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) protocol, defined in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, is tailored to meet the stringent communication requirements of industrial applications. TSCH combines Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) to efficiently allocate resources and schedule communications in IoT networks. In this paper, we conduct a comparative performance assessment of TSCH-based schedulers under varying traffic loads and patterns using the COOJA emulator. Our study focuses on two schedulers for TSCH: Minimal Scheduling and Orchestra, which includes two key variants - Orchestra Sender Based Shared (O-SBS) and Orchestra Receiver Based Shared (O-RBS). To comprehensively assess their performance in IoT networks, we conduct an in-depth evaluation across multiple key parameters: Packet Delivery and Acknowledgment Ratios, Radio-On duty cycle, End-to-End Latency, Stability, and Embedded Firmware's Memory footprint. Our results indicate that Orchestra SBS excels in ensuring high reliability and low latency in high-traffic scenarios. Meanwhile, TSCH Minimal Scheduling exhibits superior energy efficiency, and it boasts a smaller embedded firmware memory footprint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Security, a fundamental concern in the design and implementation of industrial Internet‐of‐Things (IIoT) networks, can be addressed through an effective authentication mechanism. Because the devices' battery, CPU, and memory are finite resources, any method designed for the IIoT must be resource sensitive. Our paper discussed a mechanism for device mutual authentication in IIoT networks that is adaptable, lightweight, safe, and efficient. In the proposed mechanism, the devices receive a primary secret value and physical unclonable function‐challenge/response pair (PUF‐CRPs) from the server and employ these values to authenticate one another. Later, IIoT devices requests server to update PUF‐CRPs for future communication We employed one‐way hash function, concatenation operation, XOR operation, and PUF‐CRPs to take into account the resource constraints of the devices. It has been established that the proposed mechanism is immune to well‐known attacks after it has undergone a formal evaluation for safety through BAN logic, and automatic validation through AVISPA and ProVerif tools. Comparative evaluation of the existing mechanisms and the proposed mechanism demonstrated that our proposed mechanism is superior to existing mechanisms, and its experimental study revealed that it uses 28% less energy. With the fast growth of the Industrial Internet of Everything (IIoE), computing and telecommunication industries all over the world are moving rapidly towards the IPv6 address architecture, which supports virtualization architectures such as Network Function Virtualization (NFV). NFV provides networking services like routing, security, storage, etc., through software-based virtual machines. As a result, NFV reduces equipment costs. Due to the increase in applications on Industrial Internet of Things (IoT)-based networks, security threats have also increased. The communication links between people and people or from one machine to another machine are insecure. Usually, critical data are exchanged over the IoE, so authentication and confidentiality are significant concerns. Asymmetric key cryptosystems increase computation and communication overheads. This paper proposes a lightweight and certificateless end-to-end secure communication scheme to provide security services against replay attacks, man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, and impersonation attacks with low computation and communication overheads. The system is implemented on Linux-based Lubuntu 20.04 virtual machines using Java programming connected to NFV-based large-scale hybrid IPv4-IPv6 virtual networks. Finally, we compare the performance of our proposed security scheme with existing schemes based on the computation and communication costs. In addition, we measure and analyze the performance of our proposed secure communication scheme over NFV-based virtualized networks with regard to several parameters like end-to-end delay and packet loss. The results of our comparison with existing security schemes show that our proposed security scheme reduces the computation cost by 38.87% and the communication cost by 26.08%. Under the auspice of further developing 5G mobile communication technology and integrating it with the latest advancements in the field of Industrial Internet-of-Things, this study conducts in-depth research and detailed analysis on the combination of 5G with industrial systems based on composite structures, communication network architectures, wireless application scenarios, and communication protocols. The status quo, development trend, and necessity of 5G mobile communication technology are explored and its potential in industrial applications is analyzed. Based on the current practical development level of 5G technology, by considering different requirements for bandwidth, real-time performance, and reliability in communication networks of industrial systems, this study proposes three feasible paths for the integration between 5G and industrial systems, including the method to use 5G in place of field buses. Finally, by introducing real-world cases, this study has successfully demonstrated the integration of 5G and industrial systems by extending 5G terminals as field bus gateways. Several cases of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) attacks with zero-day vulnerabilities have been reported. To prevent these attacks, it is necessary to apply an abnormal behavior detection method; however, there are three main problems that make it hard. First, there are various industrial communication protocols. Instead of IT environments, many unstandardized protocols, which are usually defined by vendors, are used. Second, legacy devices are commonly used, not only EOS (End-of-service), but also EoL (End-of-Life). And last, the analysis of collected data is necessary for defining normal behavior. This behavior should be separately defined in each IIoT. Therefore, it is difficult to apply abnormal behavior detection in environments where economic and human investment is difficult. To solve these problems, we propose a deep learning based abnormal behavior detection technique that utilizes IIoT communication patterns. The proposed method uses a deep learning technique to train periodic data acquisition sequences, which is one of the common characteristics of IIoT. The trained model determined the sequence of packet is normal. The proposed technique can be applied without an additional analysis. The proposed method is expected to prevent security threats by proactively detecting cyberattacks. To verify the proposed method, a dataset was collected from the Korea Electric Power Control System. The model that defines normal behavior based on the application layer exhibits an accuracy of 79.6%. The other model, defining normal behavior based on the transport layer, has an accuracy of 80.9%. Summary: Through the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), the manufacturing enterprises have significantly enhanced the production efficiency. The transmission of data in IIoT over public channels has brought about information leakage issues. Therefore, it is crucial to agree on a session key among the participants. In recent years, numerous authenticated key exchange (AKE) schemes have been designed. However, those AKE schemes which adopt the certificateless approach to tackle certificate management and key escrow may remain vulnerable to quantum attacks, and other AKE schemes which are based on lattice hard problem so as to achieve the post quantum security may incur key management issues. To simultaneously address the aforementioned challenges, we propose a lightweight certificateless lattice‐based authenticated key exchange (C2LAKE) scheme. Upon the hardness assumptions of the inhomogeneous small integer solution (ISIS) and computational bilateral inhomogeneous small integer solution (CBi‐ISIS) problems, the C2LAKE scheme has been demonstrated to be secure in the eCK model and the random oracle model (ROM). The timely delivery of critical messages in real-time environments is an increasing requirement for industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. Similar to wired time-sensitive networking (TSN) techniques, which bifurcate traffic flows based on priority, the proposed wireless method aims to ensure that critical traffic arrives rapidly across multiple hops to enable numerous IIoT use cases. IIoT architectures are migrating toward wirelessly connected edges, creating a desire to extend TSN-like functionality to a wireless format. Existing protocols possess inherent challenges to achieving this prioritized low-latency communication, ranging from rigidly scheduled time division transmissions, scalability/jitter of carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols, and encryption-induced latency. This paper presents a hardware-validated low-latency technique built upon receiver-assigned code division multiple access (RA-CDMA) techniques to implement a secure wireless TSN-like extension suitable for the IIoT. Results from our hardware prototype, constructed on the IntelFPGA Arria 10 platform, show that (sub-)millisecond single-hop latencies can be achieved for each of the available message types, ranging from 12 bits up to 224 bits of payload. By achieving one-way transmission of under 1 ms, a reliable wireless TSN extension with comparable timelines to 802.1Q and/or 5G is achievable and proven in concept through our hardware prototype. Smart cities are powered by several new technologies to enhance connectivity between devices and develop a network of connected objects which can lead to many smart industrial applications. This network known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) consists of sensor nodes that have limited computing capacity and are sometimes not able to execute intricate industrial tasks within their stipulated time frame. For faster execution, these tasks are offloaded to nearby fog nodes. Internet access and the diverse nature of network types make IIoT nodes vulnerable and are under serious malicious attacks. Malicious attacks can cause anomalies in the IIoT network by overloading complex tasks, which can compromise the fog processing capabilities. This results in an increased delay of task computation for trustworthy nodes. To improve the task execution capability of the fog computing node, it is important to avoid complex offloaded tasks due to malicious attacks. However, even after avoiding the malicious tasks, if the offloaded tasks are too complex for the fog node to execute, then the fog nodes may struggle to process all legitimate tasks within their stipulated time frame. To address these challenges, the Trust-based Efficient Execution of Offloaded IIoT Trusted tasks (EEOIT) is proposed for fog nodes. EEOIT proposes a mechanism to detect malicious nodes as well as manage the allocation of computing resources so that IIoT tasks can be completed in the specified time frame. Simulation results demonstrate that EEOIT outperforms other techniques in the literature in an IIoT setting with different task densities. Another significant feature of the proposed EEOIT technique is that it enhances the computation of trustable tasks in the network. The results show that EEOIT entertains more legitimate nodes in executing their offloaded tasks with more executed data, with reduced time and with increased mean trust values as compared to other schemes. Securing Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) can be challenging because security solutions intended for typical IT/OT systems may not be as effective in a CPS setting. The goal of this study is to create a mechanism for identifying and attributing two-level ensemble attacks that are specifically designed for use against Industrial Control Systems (ICSs). An original ensemble deep representation learning model is combined with decision tree algorithm to identify assaults on unbalanced ICS environments at the first level. An attack attribution network, which constitutes a collection of deep neural networks, is formed at the second level. The proposed model is tested using real-world datasets, notably those pertaining to water purification and gas pipelines. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms other strategies with comparable computing complexity and that the recommended model outperforms the existing mechanisms. Digital Twins (DTs) have recently emerged as a valuable approach for modeling, monitoring, and controlling physical objects in Industrial Internet of Things applications. Measuring the quality of entanglement between the digital and physical counterparts plays a crucial role in the adoption of DTs. In this context, entanglement denotes how well a DT mirrors its counterpart and the extent to which the behavior of the physical counterpart aligns with the commands issued by the DT. In this paper we propose a concise yet expressive and original metric for representing the quality of entanglement, namely Overall Digital Twin Entanglement (ODTE), based on two key factors: timeliness and completeness, i.e., the freshness of the collected data and the ratio between collected and total data, respectively. In addition, the paper describes how we have built our industrial testbed implemented on top of Kubernetes, where we show practical applications of the proposed ODTE metric by highlighting and discussing its benefits in realistic use cases.

Connecting smart industrial components to computer networks revolutionizes business operations. However, in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), the sharing of data has bandwidth, computational, and privacy issues. Researchers presented cloud computing and fine-grained access control to overcome these challenges. However, traditional centralized computing systems involve single points of failure. To mitigate these challenges, we have proposed a secure and incentive-based data-sharing framework for IIoT systems using blockchain technology. We leverage blockchain due to its ability to provide secure and tamper-resistant data storage and sharing as participants store their data on a distributed ledger (DL), preventing unauthorized access. A security protocol is designed that utilizes the properties of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). Moreover, Shapley value is employed to calculate revenue and distribute it fairly. To perform the formal security evaluation, we have conducted extensive simulations using the Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) and Scyther protocol simulation tools, which demonstrated that our protocol is robust against various adversarial attacks. The experimental results show that the proposed incentive distribution framework demonstrated fairness in the distribution of revenue among participants.

Traffic patterns generated by industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) services can be categorized as either periodic or bursty. The minimal scheduling function (MSF), standardized by the 6TiSCH working group, serves as an example of a scheduling function for IEEE 802.15.4e time-slotted channel hopping. However, the MSF is inadequate for bursty traffic patterns in which a large amount of data is delivered at random intervals. This limitation arises because the MSF requires more dedicated cells to prevent packet loss, but an increased allocation of dedicated cells leads to excessive cell utilization and energy inefficiency. Furthermore, low latency should be considered in bursty traffic patterns, which require proper cell allocation instead of random cell allocation. To address these challenges, we propose a low-latency and Q-learning-based scheduling function (LLQL-SF), is designed for 6TiSCH networks. This new scheduler has been designed to effectively adapt to dynamic traffic patterns by optimizing cell allocation to minimize latency. Additionally, we have integrated a Q-learning algorithm into this scheduler, enabling it to dynamically determine the ideal quantity of dedicated cells required for each slot frame iteration based on the network demands. The proposed methods were evaluated by simulation over various periodic or bursty traffic and network sizes. Also, test over 30 real testbed devices that deployed on FIT IoT-LAB. The results indicated that LLQL-SF outperformed the benchmark methods. LLQL-SF can achieve higher packet delivery, lower latency, and energy usage compared with the standard scheduling function by 11%, −20%, and −11%, respectively.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly used in every application field. Wi-Fi-based communication is the most preferred choice in wireless IoT systems due to its accessibility, high bandwidth, affordability, and versatility. However, security vulnerabilities in IoT devices pose considerable risks, especially in industrial and critical applications. This paper presents a novel technique to detect jamming in IoT, focusing on communication and environmental dynamics in industrial settings. To better examine the communication conditions and jamming in the industrial production environment, it initially focuses on collecting quality of service (QoS) and connection parameters during normal communication and jamming attacks in production lines equipped with wireless IoT devices with server-client architecture. Experimental findings demonstrate the strikingly profound impact of spot jamming on the upper layers of the protocol stack, revealing that jamming attacks on the physical layer can trigger cascading failures at the transport and application layers. This study presents an innovative stacked Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based model for jamming detection that uses parameters from multiple layers. The proposed LSTM model demonstrates remarkable accuracy in predicting jamming attacks and exhibits robust performance in real-time IoT applications. The model is trained on a carefully curated dataset and tested on a real-time experimental testbed with various types of jamming attacks. The results yielded a jamming detection accuracy of 99.5% and a precision of 99.4%. This research sheds light on the impact of jamming attacks in IoT systems and presents an advanced detection model that shows promising results in mitigating such threats.

The emerging fog networks in the internet of things (IoT) applications provide flexibility and agility for service providers. The combination of fog nodes and edge nodes enable them to deliver a given network service. However, the selection of suitable edge and fog nodes and their scheduling still remain a research challenge. Finding a globally optimal scheduling of oversized data transmission over IoT applications for industrial requirements is crucial. Optimal batch scheduling has been regarded as a viable way to achieve optimal scheduling in other contemporary network models. This manuscript has projected an Optimum Batch Scheduling Model (OBSM) for Quality aware Delay Sensitive Data Transmission over Fog Enabled IoT Networks. A novel clustering technique has been proposed in this manuscript to group the transmission nodes (fog or edge nodes) and data packets, which further pairs each group of data with one of the corresponding node group to achieve delay sensitivity and other quality factors such as energy efficiency. The data scheduling between data and node group is drawn from the previous contribution -"Quality aware Energy Efficient Scheduling Model (QEESM) for Fog Enabled IoT Network". The simulation results have shown that, in terms of average make span rate, average round trip time, and energy consumption, the batch scheduling model OBSM performs noticeably better than the contemporary scheduling models. The OBSM scheduling model's average make-span rate, roundtrip time, as well as energy consumption per make span are 23.3 7.03, 17.8 5.2, and 11.33 6.9 joules, respectively, which conclusively demonstrate that the OBSM model outperforms the existing models. A novel batch scheduling algorithm has been proposed using a unique unsupervised learning approach that suggested to cluster the transmission requests and transmission channels in to multiple clusters. Manufacturing industries are aware of the benefits of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and the pivotal role of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to facilitate the transition. However, they often underestimate the intricate connection between the implementation of IIoT and their existing sensing and communication systems. Hindering their progress towards I4.0 implementation, many factories still rely on rigid sensing systems, characterized by limited adaptability and inflexibility. This raises questions regarding the industrial readiness for I4.0 implementation and its ability to meet the sensing and connectivity standards of IIoT. Specifically, it is unclear whether the current brownfield installations, consisting of sensors and networking systems, adequately support the demanding I4.0 applications that necessitate a multi-functional and collaborative IIoT system. Our objective is to assess a factory's progress towards I4.0 by examining the readiness of its sensing system and the communication capabilities of its network. We propose a two-stage analysis of factory readiness, including a functional segment-based sensor analysis and an application class-based network analysis. We present a case study conducted at an iron-making plant in The Netherlands to illustrate our method. Key findings of the case study include: (1) a lack of multi-functionality across segments for the majority of sensors (90%), (2) a considerable portion of network traffic (73%) requires high reliability, and (3) only 3% of the current network traffic necessitate ultra-reliable, low latency communication. This paper proposes three methods of the optimal smart meter selection for acting as a data concentrator in the automatic meter reading last mile network. The study explains the reasons why the selected smart meter should also act as a data concentrator, in addition to its basic role. To select the smart meter, either the reliability of communication or the speed of the automatic meter reading process was considered. Graph theory is employed to analyse the last mile network, described as sets of nodes and unreliable links. The frame error ratio was used to assess the unreliability whilst the number of hops was used to describe the speed of the reading process. The input data for the analysis are qualitative parameters determined based on observations in the real, operated last mile networks as well as their typical topological arrangements. The results of the research can be useful in the last mile network migration process, which uses concentrators to the networks without them, or during the process of newer last mile network implementation, where data concentrators are no longer applicable. Machine learning algorithms have substantially increased the ability of intrusion detection (IDS) systems to identify and categorize cyber-attacks on the network and host levels in real time. But the fact that dangerous attacks happen frequently and are always evolving causes a number of issues that call for scalable solutions. This article discusses how to develop adaptive and powerful intrusion detection systems that can identify and classify unwanted and unplanned cyber-attacks using deep neural networks (DNNs), a form of deep learning model. A number of benchmarks damaging datasets that are accessible to the general public are provided with a full examination of DNN and other conventional machine learning classifier trials. The KDDCup99 and NSDL-KDD datasets are used in the following hyper parameter selection technique to determine the best DNN network parameters and network design. System administrators can use Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) to investigate network security vulnerabilities in their enterprises. Electronic waste (e-waste) contains toxic elements causing an important impact on environmental and human health. However, the presence of valuable metals, such as copper or gold, among others, make recycling a necessity for obtaining an alternative source of raw materials. Conventional metal recovery methods are environmentally unsound, prompting the exploration of greener alternatives like bioleaching, which utilizes the activity of microorganisms for a more sustainable recovery. However, the mechanisms involved in the process and the conditions to optimize the metabolic paths are still not completely known. Monitorization and automatization of the different stages composing the global process are crucial for advancing in the implementation of this novel technology at an industrial scale. For the first time, an open-source industrial IoT system is designed to enhance and regulate bioleaching by implementing real-time monitoring and control within the plant's infrastructure. This system includes an Android app that displays real-time plant data from sensors and a robust server featuring a flexible application programming interface (API) for future applications. The app caters to specific needs such as remote sensor reading, actuator control, and real-time bioleaching alerts, ensuring secure access and proactive event management. By utilizing collected data, it minimizes downtime, equipment failures, and supply chain disruptions. The server maintains seamless communication with the plant controller, enabling efficient pump activation and sensor data transmission. A telegram bot demonstrates the API's flexibility by forwarding plant alerts to users. During validation with concurrent remote user access, the application demonstrated its ability to prevent irreversible plant failures through an advanced alarm system. Ultimately, this IIoT system amplifies plant performance, safety, and efficiency by optimizing processes and decision-making capabilities. Production lines face numerous challenges to meet market demands, including constant changes in products that require continuous adjustments. Efficient and rapid reconfiguration and adaptation of production processes are crucial. In cases of inadequate adaptation, bottlenecks can arise due to human errors or incorrect configurations, often introducing complexity in pinpointing the root cause and resulting in financial losses. Furthermore, improper machine maintenance contributes to this situation as well. This article seeks to establish a framework grounded in the contemporary smart factory, the IIoT, the Industry 4.0 paradigm, and Big Data. The proposed system places emphasis on leveraging real-time data analysis for predicting risks, while concurrently conducting a thorough analysis of historical data to monitor trends and enhance bottleneck identification. The defined architecture operates across multiple levels, acquiring real-time information and generating historical data for training and continuous optimization. Securing Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) can be challenging because security solutions intended for typical IT/OT systems may not be as effective in a CPS setting. The goal of this study is to create a mechanism for identifying and attributing two-level ensemble attacks that are specifically designed for use against Industrial Control Systems (ICSs). An original ensemble deep representation learning model is combined with decision tree algorithm to identify assaults on unbalanced ICS environments at the first level. An attack attribution network, which constitutes a collection of deep neural networks, is formed at the second level. The proposed model is tested using real-world datasets, notably those pertaining to water purification and gas pipelines. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms other strategies with comparable computing complexity and that the recommended model outperforms the existing mechanisms.

The introduction of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has led to major changes in the industry. Thanks to machine data, business process management methods and techniques could also be applied to them. However, one data source has so far remained untouched: The network data of the machines. In the business environment, process mining, for example, has already been carried out based on network data, but the IIoT, with its particular protocols such as OPC UA, has yet to be investigated. With the help of design science research and on the shoulders of CRISP-DM, we first develop a framework for process mining in the IIoT in this paper. We then apply the framework to real-world IIoT network traffic data and evaluate the outcome and performance of our approach in detail. We find tremendous potential in network traffic data but also limitations. Among other things, due to the dependence on process experts and the existence of case IDs.

The use of distributed ledger technology for industrial IoT devices is increasing recently to ensure network security and data protection. Factories and manufacturing plants inclined lately to deploy both Industrial IoT and DLT applications in order to enable autonomous secure operations. IoT helps in simplifying business processes, improving user's experience and leading to better cost efficiencies, while DLT ensures security, transparency and trust. DLT-based IoT supports secure automation for industrial systems and fosters transformation into the industry 4 age. However, DLT still faces several challenges such as scalability, high cost and security. Moreover, there is no clear understanding about DLT-IoT architecture by a wide range of the industrial community. This work introduces DLT as a major key component of industrial IoT systems that benefits the industry with high level of protection and trust. It also surveys different DLT consensus with regard to industry in order to construct a comparative analysis between the most common algorithms. Broadband powerline communication is a technology developed mainly with consumer applications and bulk data transmission in mind. Typical use cases include file download, streaming, or last-mile internet access for residential buildings. Applications gaining momentum are smart metering and grid automation, where response time requirements are relatively moderate compared to industrial (real-time) control. This work investigates to which extent G.hn technology, with existing, commercial off-the-shelf components, can be used for real-time control applications. Maximum packet rate and latency statistics are investigated for different G.hn profiles and MAC algorithms. An elevator control system serves as an example application to define the latency and throughput requirements. In recent years, the growing and widespread usage of Internet of Things (IoT) systems has led to the emergence of customized structures dependent on these systems. Industrial IoT (IIoT) is a subset of IoT in terms of applications and usage areas. IIoT presents many participants in various domains, such as healthcare, transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing. Besides the daily life benefits, IIoT technology provides major contributions via the Industrial Control System (ICS) and intelligent systems. The convergence of IoT and IIoT systems brings some integration and interoperability problems. In IIoT systems, devices interact with each other using information technologies (IT) and network space. However, these common usages and interoperability led to some security risks. To avoid security risks and vulnerabilities, different systems and protocols have been designed and published. Various public databases and programs identify and provide some of the security threats to make it easier for system administrators' missions. However, effective and long-term security detection mechanisms are needed. In the literature, there are numerous approaches to detecting security threats in IoT-based systems. This article presents two major contributions: First, a graph-based threat detection approach for IoT-based network systems is proposed. Threat path detection is one of the most critical steps in the security of IoT-based systems. To represent vulnerabilities, a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure is constructed using threat weights. General threats are identified using Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE). The proposed threat pathfinding algorithm uses the depth first search (DFS) idea and discovers threat paths from the root to all leaf nodes. Therefore, all possible threat paths are detected in the threat graph. Second, threat path-reducing algorithms are proposed considering the total threat weight, hop length, and hot spot thresholds. In terms of available threat pathfinding and hot spot detecting procedures, the proposed reducing algorithms provide better running times. Therefore, all possible threat paths are founded and reduced by the constructed IoT-based DAG structure. Finally, simulation results are compared, and remarkable complexity performances are obtained. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an innovative technology that presents effective and attractive solutions to revolutionize various domains. Numerous solutions based on the IoT have been designed to automate industries, manufacturing units, and production houses to mitigate human involvement in hazardous operations. Owing to the large number of publications in the IoT paradigm, in particular those focusing on industrial IoT (IIoT), a comprehensive survey is significantly important to provide insights into recent developments. This survey presents the workings of the IoT-based smart industry and its major components and proposes the state-of-the-art network infrastructure, including structured layers of IIoT architecture, IIoT network topologies, protocols, and devices. Furthermore, the relationship between IoT-based industries and key technologies is analyzed, including big data storage, cloud computing, and data analytics. A detailed discussion of IIoT-based application domains, smartphone application solutions, and sensor- and device-based IIoT applications developed for the management of the smart industry is also presented. Consequently, IIoT-based security attacks and their relevant countermeasures are highlighted. By analyzing the essential components, their security risks, and available solutions, future research directions regarding the implementation of IIoT are outlined.
