10. The development of water and oxygen tolerant catalysts for ammonia synthesis

Abstract

Due to its essential use as a fertilizer, ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and hydrogen is considered to be one of the most important chemical processes of the last 100 years with the development of the high temperature and pressure Haber-Bosch process winning Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1918 and 1931 respectively. Since then an enormous amount of work has been undertaken in order to investigate and develop effective catalysts for this process. This has led to the discovery of various effective catalysts for the synthesis of ammonia, with high activities shown for iron, ruthenium and metal nitride catalysts. Although the catalytic synthesis of ammonia has been extensively studied in the last century, many new catalysts are still currently being developed in order to reduce the operating temperature and pressure of the process and to improve the conversion of reactants to ammonia. In this thesis, new promotor materials for ammonia synthesis catalysts have been developed. These promotor materials are BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3, ZrO2/Zr, Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ, CeO2-xNy, and Ce0.5Sm0.5O2-xNy. Through catalytic activity measurements carried out at high temperature and pressure along with a range of characterisation techniques including; X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Element mapping (EDX), B.E.T. surface area analysis (B.E.T.), and X-ray florescence (XRF), the effect of properties including extrinsic oxygen vacancies and nitrogen content were analysed for their effect on the ammonia synthesis reaction. In our results it was found that the activity can be significantly increased by introducing these desirable properties in to the catalyst promotors. It was found that an increase from 9.7 mmol g-1 h-1 to 12.3 mmol g-1 h-1 can be achieved at 3 MPa and 450 oC when extrinsic oxygen vacancies are introduced to the CeO2 promotor through samarium doping. By introducing nitrogen in to the CeO2 promotor to create oxynitride material CeO2-xNy an increase in activity was seen at 450 oC and 3 MPa to a value of 17.2 mmol g-1 h-1. By introducing extrinsic oxygen vacancies in to the oxynitride material it was shown that an activity of 18.8 mmol g-1 h-1 can be achieved at a temperature of 400 oC and 3 MPa for the Ce0.5Sm0.5O2-xNy promoted Fe catalyst and an activity of 27.6 mmol g-1 h-1 at 400 oC and 3 MPa for the Ce0.5Sm0.5O2-xNy promoted Ru catalyst. From these results the potential to develop promising industrial catalysts for both current ammonia plants as well as small scale low carbon ammonia synthesis processes using renewable electricity can be seen whether using these material or new promotor materials exhibiting similar properties.

Abstract

Background: Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) in Australia aim to optimise access to comprehensive and culturally safe primary health care (PHC) for Aboriginal populations. Central to quality service provision is the retention of staff. However, there is lack of published research reporting patterns of staff turnover and retention specific to ACCHSs. This study quantified staff turnover and retention in regional and remote ACCHSs in the Northern Territory (NT) and Western Australia (WA), and examined correlations between turnover and retention metrics, and ACCHSs' geographical and demographic characteristics. Methods: The study used 2017–2019 payroll data for health workers in 22 regional and remote PHC clinics managed by 11 ACCHSs. Primary outcome measures included annual turnover and 12-month stability rates, calculated at both clinic and organisation levels. Results: There was a median of five client-facing (Aboriginal health practitioners, allied health professionals, doctors, nurses/midwives, and 'other health workers' combined) and two non-client-facing (administrative and physical) staff per remote clinic, at any timepoint. Mean annual turnover rates for staff were very high, with 151% turnover rates at the clinic level and 81% turnover rates at the organisation level. Mean annual turnover rates for client-facing staff were 164% and 75%, compared to 120% and 98% for non-client-facing staff, at clinic and organisational levels, respectively. Mean 12-month stability rates were low, with clinic-level stability rates of only 49% and organisation-level stability rates of 58%. Mean annual clinic-level turnover rates were 162% for non-Aboriginal staff and 81% for Aboriginal staff. Both workforce metrics were moderately to highly correlated with the relative remoteness of clinics, size of regular clients serviced, and average annual headcount of employees in each clinic (p values < 0.01). Conclusions: Participating ACCHSs in remote NT and WA have very high turnover and low retention of healthcare staff. Overall, clinic-level turnover rates increase as distance from regional centres increases and are lower for Aboriginal staff, suggesting that greater employment of Aboriginal staff could help stabilise staffing. Improved retention could reduce burden on ACCHSs' resources and may also support quality of service delivery due to improved cultural safety and continuity of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Vesicular stomatitis (VS) is a vector-borne livestock disease caused by the vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV). This study presents the first application of an SEIR-SEI compartmental model to analyze VSNJV transmission dynamics. Focusing on the 2014–2015 outbreak in the United States, the model integrates vertebrate hosts and insect vector demographics while accounting for heterogeneous competency within the populations and observation bias in documented disease cases. Key epidemiological parameters were estimated using Bayesian inference and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, including the force of infection, effective reproduction number ( R t ), and incubation periods. The model revealed significant underreporting, with only 10–24% of infections documented, 23% of which presented with clinical symptoms. These findings underscore the importance of including competence and imperfect detection in disease models to depict outbreak dynamics and inform effective control strategies accurately. As a baseline model, this SEIR-SEI implementation is intended to serve as a foundation for future refinements and expansions to improve our understanding of VS dynamics. Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic period (2020 to 2022) challenged and overstretched the capacity of primary health care services to deliver health care globally. The sector faced a highly uncertain and dynamic period that encompassed anticipation of a new, unknown, lethal and highly transmissible infection, the introduction of various travel restrictions, health workforce shortages, new government funding announcements and various policies to restrict the spread of the COVID-19 virus, then vaccination and treatments. This qualitative study aims to document and explore how the pandemic affected primary health care utilisation and delivery in remote and regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff working in 11 Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) in outer regional, remote and very remote Australia. Interviews were transcribed, inductively coded and thematically analysed. Results: 248 staff working in outer regional, remote and very remote primary health care clinics were interviewed between February 2020 and June 2021. Participants reported a decline in numbers of primary health care presentations in most communities during the initial COVID-19 lock down period. The reasons for the decline were attributed to community members apprehension to go to the clinics, change in work priorities of primary health care staff (e.g. more emphasis on preventing the virus entering the communities and stopping the spread) and limited outreach programs. Staff forecasted a future spike in acute presentations of various chronic diseases leading to increased medical retrieval requirements from remote communities to hospital. Information dissemination during the pre-vaccine roll-out stage was perceived to be well received by community members, while vaccine roll-out stage information was challenged by misinformation circulated through social media. Conclusions: The ability of ACCHSs to be able to adapt service delivery in response to the changing COVID-19 strategies and policies are highlighted in this study. The study signifies the need to adequately fund ACCHSs with staff, resources, space and appropriate information to enable them to connect with their communities and continue their work especially in an era where the additional challenges created by pandemics are likely to become more frequent. While the PHC seeking behaviour of community members during the COVID-19 period were aligned to the trends observed across the world, some of the reasons underlying the trends were unique to outer regional, remote and very remote populations. Policy makers will need to give due consideration to the potential effects of newly developed policies on ACCHSs operating in remote and regional contexts that already battle under resourcing issues and high numbers of chronically ill populations. Abstract

We conducted an integrative analysis to elucidate the spatial epidemiological patterns of the Vesicular Stomatitis New Jersey virus (VSNJV) during the 2014–15 epizootic cycle in the United States (US). Using georeferenced VSNJV genomics data, confirmed vesicular stomatitis (VS) disease cases from surveillance, and a suite of environmental factors, our study assessed environmental and phylogenetic similarity to compare VS cases reported in 2014 and 2015. Despite uncertainties from incomplete virus sampling and cross-scale spatial processes, patterns suggested multiple independent re-invasion events concurrent with potential viral overwintering between sequential seasons. Our findings pointed to a geographically defined southern virus pool at the US–Mexico interface as the source of VSNJV invasions and overwintering sites. Phylodynamic analysis demonstrated an increase in virus diversity before a rise in case numbers and a pronounced reduction in virus diversity during the winter season, indicative of a genetic bottleneck and a significant narrowing of virus variation between the summer outbreak seasons. Environment–vector interactions underscored the central role of meta-population dynamics in driving disease spread. These insights emphasize the necessity for location- and time-specific management practices, including rapid response, movement restrictions, vector control, and other targeted interventions. 25. Reflection on the Development of a Research Agenda in Rural Health

Abstract

There is a dearth of literature on how research agendas have been developed. In this article, the authors reflect on the process of developing a research agenda through a case study of a rural health university centre. The aim is to contribute to understanding how a team can effectively plan research. Two leaders of the process, as well as academics external to the process, reflected on the experience and the outcome of the agenda development process. Reflections focused on three areas: (a) engagement levels, (b) power and influence, and (c) interpretation of the research agenda. First, while there was passionate discussion at meetings and afterward, engagement levels varied. Second, the process was imbued with power and influence at multiple levels. Finally, the availability of a conceptual framework to contextualise rural and remote health research helped in interpreting the significance of the resulting research agenda. The article concludes with contrasting thoughts on the place of research agendas within contemporary neoliberal regimes of research management.

Abstract

Green ammonia, produced through renewable energy-powered electrochemical and thermal processes, is emerging as a promising candidate to replace fossil fuel-based ammonia in the fertiliser, transportation and energy sectors. This paper provides an overview of the production methods, utilisation methods and technological advancements for green ammonia. The electrochemical production and Haber-Bosch with renewable hydrogen and energy are discussed in detail highlighting recent material advances. Green ammonia utilisation methods are discussed with direct use cases such as ammonia combustion and direct ammonia fuel cells examined. Green ammonia’s potential as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier is also discussed in regards to ammonia cracking for effective hydrogen recovery. This paper concludes that green ammonia has the potential to play a significant role in the transition to a sustainable energy system and offers new opportunities for the fertiliser, transportation and energy industries.
