The rapid advancement of digitization and informatization has highlighted the significance of polymer-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites. However, there has been a notable scarcity of efforts to enhance EMI shielding performance and mechanical properties in the backdrop of conductive polymer composites (CPCs). Herein, we present a novel approach utilizing bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) chemically modified hollow glass microspheres (HGM), referred to as PDA@HGM, in conjunction with carbon nanostructures (CNS), to fabricate functional ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites. These composites are synthesized using a mechanical mixing and hot-pressing method. Experimental outcomes provide insights into the influence rules of PDA@HGM incorporation on mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and EMI shielding performance of composites. It is determined that the PDA@HGM inclusion is observed to enhance EMI shielding performance of the composites by decreasing reflection and increasing absorption loss. Profited from the biomimetic interfacial reinforcement provided by the PDA, the total EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of PDA@HGM5 composite can be increased by 27 % with the highest value of 49.8 dB (12.4 GHz). Moreover, this obtained composite demonstrates an acceptable tensile strength, which can reach up to 32.31 MPa and outperforms to other unmodified HGM composites. This investigation further incorporates a comprehensive analysis, encompassing XPS, FT-IR, TGA, EDS, and FE-SEM, to systematically reveal the underlying mechanisms of HGM and PDA@HGM incorporation on EMI SE. Overall, these enhanced PDA@HGM composites demonstrate significant promise for the development of the high-performance lightweight CPCs.

AbstractPolymeric composites with the hybrid filler network for high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding brought increasing interest. Herein, UHMWPE/ground tire rubber (GTR)/conductive carbon black (CCB) (UGC) composites with a hybrid segregated structural CCB-GTR were constructed by solid-phase shear milling (S3M), mechanical blending, and compacted molding processes. The percolation behavior of electrical conductivity and EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of composites was described using Sigmoidal/Growth models, and its EMI shielding mechanism was discussed. Results showed that the EMI SE of U30G70C20, U50G50C20, and U70G30C20 composites were found to be 37.5, 41.7, and 43.8 dB, respectively, due to constructing a hybrid network. The attenuation rate of microwave radiation is above 99.99%, and the shielding mechanism is mainly electrical loss. Moreover, the relationship between electrical conductivity and EMI SE is consistent with Sigmoidal/Growth models, indicating that Sigmoidal/Growth models can successfully predict the percolation threshold of the EMI SE of UGC composites.

The application of remote sensing technology in water body detection has become increasingly widespread, offering significant value for environmental monitoring, hydrological research, and disaster early warning. However, the existing methods face challenges in multi-scene and multi-temporal water body detection, including the diverse variations in water body shapes and sizes that complicate detection; the complexity of land cover types, which easily leads to false positives and missed detections; the high cost of acquiring high-resolution images, limiting long-term applications; and the lack of effective handling of multi-temporal data, making it difficult to capture the dynamic changes in water bodies. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel network for multi-scene and multi-temporal water body detection based on spatiotemporal feature extraction, named TSAE-UNet. TSAE-UNet integrates convolutional neural networks (CNN), depthwise separable convolutions, ConvLSTM, and attention mechanisms, significantly improving the accuracy and robustness of water body detection by capturing multi-scale features and establishing long-term dependencies. The Otsu method was employed to quickly process Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-2 images, generating a high-quality training dataset. In the first experiment, five rectangular areas of approximately 37.5 km2 each were selected to validate the water body detection performance of the TSAE-UNet model across different scenes. The second experiment focused on Jining City, Shandong Province, China, analyzing the monthly water body changes from 2020 to 2022 and the quarterly changes in 2022. The experimental results demonstrate that TSAE-UNet excels in multi-scene and long-term water body detection, achieving a precision of 0.989, a recall of 0.983, an F1 score of 0.986, and an IoU of 0.974, significantly outperforming FCN, PSPNet, DeepLabV3+, ADCNN, and MECNet.

To address the practical application challenges of conductive polymer composites (CPCs) in portable electronics equipment, such as their low thermal conductivity (TC) and poor electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (EMI SE), it is crucial to improve their TC, electrical conductivity(σ), and EMI SE of CPCs. In this work, we present a conducting composite made of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and carbon nanostructures (CNS) with a unique segregated structure. This structure is achieved through a simple high-speed mechanical mixing and compression molding process. Microscopy characteristics demonstrated that both the matrix and segregated conductive network were in-situ oriented along the compress direction of UHMWPE granules under the static hot-pressing field. CNS are compacted together at the interface between UHMWPE granules to form an oriented and interconnected conductive pathways at low CNS loading levels. The resultant UHMWPE/CNS composites with 10 wt% CNS content exhibits excellent EMI shielding performance, with EMI SE of 60.7 dB (at X-band), high conductivity of 2.42 S/cm, and acceptable thermal conductivity of 0.7217 (W/m K). High EMI shielding performance and absorption dominant mechanism are beneficial from the unique segregated structure, and individual CNS coated UHMWPE granule are similar to an electromagnetic cage. Additionally, the ultimate tensile strength of the composite remains high at 37.6 MPa even at 10.0 wt% CNS loading, and it shows effective thermal stability. These properties are attributed to the strong interfacial bonding between CNS and UHMWPE. These materials have potential applications in efficient thermal management and EMI shielding for high-performance intelligent electrical devices.

The coal industry is a crucial component of China’s energy sector. However, the persistent exploitation of coal resources has gravely impacted the ecological environment. While the Remote Sensing Ecology Index (RSEI) is predominantly used for assessing ecological quality, its primary focus has been urban or aquatic environments. There is limited research focused on the evaluation of the ecological environment quality in mining areas. Moreover, the information regarding surface deformation caused by coal mining extraction is an essential factor in the ecological monitoring of mining areas. Therefore, this study proposed the Modified Remote Sensing Ecology Index (MRSEI). This enhanced model merges active and passive remote sensing techniques and incorporates a deformation factor (Surface Deformation Index, SDI) to provide a holistic evaluation of mining area ecologies. Furthermore, for comparative verification, we developed the Eco-environmental Quality Index (EQI) model by selecting 12 ecological parameters and employing a hierarchical analysis. The Juye mining area in Shandong Province was selected as the region of study. MRSEI results from 2015 to 2021 indicate a decline in the ecological quality of the Juye mining area, with MRSEI values registering at 0.691, 0.644, and 0.617. The EQI model mirrors this decreasing trend over the same period. Despite MRSEI using fewer indicators, its assessments align closely with the multi-indicator EQI method. This validates the accuracy of the MRSEI method, providing reliable technical support for the monitoring and evaluation of ecological environment quality in mining areas.

Good interfacial adhesion is one of the key factors to ensure the excellent performance of composite materials. However, the interfacial effect of fiber-polymer composites remain incompletely understood. Herein, a self-designed mold was used to prepare UHMWPE (Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene)-fiber/LDPE (Low density polyethylene)-matrix (LU) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate)-fiber/LDPE-matrix composite materials (LP). The interfacial bonding effect was explored by the interfacial shear strength (IFSS), and the interfacial structure and failure mechanism during the fiber pull-out process were analyzed by the combination of experiment and finite element simulation. The results show that the IFSS of LU (3.59 MPa) is 3 times greater than that of LP (1.18 MPa), giving rise to a higher tensile strength. Moreover, Raman mapping and DSC results suggest that UHMWPE-fiber act as nucleation sites to improve the orientation and crystallization of LDPE molecular chains, generating an obvious interfacial transition zone between UHMWPE-fiber and LDPE, while no obvious interfacial transition zone is found between PET-fiber and LDPE. These findings will be expected to give some guidelines for the design and manufacturing high-performance fiber-polymer composites.

Tuning the high properties of segregated conductive polymer materials (CPCs) by incorporating nanoscale carbon fillers has drawn increasing attention in the industry and academy fields, although weak interfacial interaction of matrix-filler is a daunting challenge for high-loading CPCs. Herein, we present a facile and efficient strategy for preparing the segregated conducting ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)-based composites with acceptable mechanical properties. The interfacial interactions, mechanical properties, electrical properties and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of the UHMWPE/conducting carbon black (CCB) composites were investigated. The morphological and Raman mapping results showed that UHMWPE/high specific surface area CCB (h-CCB) composites demonstrate an obviously interfacial transition layer and strongly interfacial adhesion, as compared to UHMWPE/low specific surface area CCB (l-CCB) composites. Consequently, the high-loading UHMWPE/h-CCB composite (beyond 10 wt% CCB dosage) exhibits higher strength and elongation at break than the UHMWPE/l-CCB composite. Moreover, due to the formation of a densely stacked h-CCB network under the enhanced filler-matrix interfacial interactions, UHMWPE/h-CCB composite possesses a higher EMI SE than those of UHMWPE/l-CCB composites. The electrical conductivity and EMI SE value of the UHMWPE/h-CCB composite increase sharply with the increasing content of h-CCB. The EMI SE of UHMWPE/h-CCB composite with 10 wt% h-CCB is 22.3 dB at X-band, as four times that of the UHMWPE/l-CCB composite with same l-CCB dosage (5.6 dB). This work will help to manufacture a low-cost and high-performance EMI shielding material for modern electronic systems.

UHMWPE/BN composites were prepared by solvent mixing (SM) in this work, then were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman mapping, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and thermal conductivity meter to study the morphology, filler distribution, segregated structure, and thermal stability as well as thermal conductivity. Compared to the traditional melt mixing (MM), SM followed by molding contributes to the construction of segregated structures in UHMWPE composite. This segregated structure can greatly improve the thermal conductivity of the composites. The segregated structure of composites prepared by MM is destroyed by shearing. Moreover, the thermal stability of composites by SM is improved with the increment of BN content, which is better than that of samples by MM, probably resulting from the barrier function of the segregated structure.
