Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference in fractional quantum Hall states generally reveals the fractional charge $e^*$ of their elementary quasiparticles. Indeed, flux periods of ${\Delta}{\Phi}=(e/e^*){\Phi}_0$ were observed in interference of particle-like fractional states. Here, we report interference measurements of particle-hole conjugated states at filling factors ${\nu}=2/3, 3/5, 4/7,$ revealing the unexpected periodicities, ${\Delta}{\Phi}={\Phi}_0/{\nu}$. Moreover, the measured shot noise Fano factor (F) of partitioned quasiparticles in the interferometers quantum point contacts (QPCs) was $F={\nu}$ and not the expected $F=e^*/e$. These combined observations indicate that fractional quasiparticles tunnel in the QPCs and interfere as coherently bunched pairs, triples, and quadruplets, respectively. Charging a small metallic gate in the center of the two-path interferometer forms an antidot (or a dot) and introduces local quasiparticles, leading, unexpectedly, to a dissociation of the bunched quasiparticles, thus restoring the flux periodicity set by the elementary quasiparticle charge. Fractional quantum statistics are a signature prediction of fractional quantum Hall states, which have long been elusive in experiments. Here, we present the observation of anyonic interference and exchange phases in a novel co-propagating 'optical-like' Mach-Zehnder Interferometer. This architecture is free of charging and backscattering effects that often plague the widely used Fabry-Perot interferometer, thus exhibiting pristine Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference without fractional phase slips. We studied the three lowest Jain filling factors, {\nu}=1/3, 2/5, and 3/7, which host quasiparticles with fractional charges e*=e/3, e/5, and e/7, respectively. The observed AB interference patterns, plotted as a function of magnetic field B and modulation-gate voltage, VMG (known as pajamas), exhibited the expected flux periodicities: 3{\Phi}0, 5{\Phi}0, and 7{\Phi}0, with {\Phi}0 being the flux quantum. A small biased top gate (TG) deposited in the center of the interferometer induces local quasiparticles that are spatially isolated from the interfering modes. At non-zero TG voltage VTG, quantized phase slips appear in the AB pajamas approximately with every flux quantum that pierces the effective area below the TG. Moreover, when tuning VTG, at a constant magnetic field, abrupt phase jumps corresponding to adding one localized quasiparticle at a time under the top gate appear in the B-VTG pajamas.

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect provides a paradigmatic example of a topological phase of matter. FQH edges are theoretically described via models belonging to the class of chiral Luttinger liquid (CLL) theories [1 (Wen, 2007)]. These theories predict exotic properties of the excitations, such as fractional charge and fractional statistics. Despite theoretical confidence in this description and qualitative experimental confirmations, quantitative experimental evidence for CLL behaviour is scarce. In this work, we study tunnelling between edge modes in the quantum Hall regime at the filling factor $\nu=1/3$. We present measurements at different system temperatures and perform a novel scaling analysis of the experimental data, originally proposed in Ref. [2 (Schiller et al., 2022)]. Our analysis shows clear evidence of CLL breakdown - above a certain energy scale. In the low-energy regime, where the scaling behaviour holds, we extract the property called the scaling dimension and find it heavily renormalized compared to na\"ive CLL theory predictions. Our results show that decades-old experiments contain a lot of previously overlooked information that can be used to investigate the physics of quantum Hall edges. In particular, we open a road to quantitative experimental studies of (a) scaling dimension renormalization in quantum point contacts and (b) CLL breakdown mechanisms at an intermediate energy scale, much smaller than the bulk gap., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures + SM (4-pages, 5 figures)

The even denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states $\nu=5/2$ and $\nu=7/2$ have been long predicted to host non-abelian quasiparticles (QPs). Their present energy-carrying neutral modes are hidden from customary conductance measurements and thus motivate thermal transport measurements, which are sensitive to all energy-carrying modes. While past `two-terminal' thermal conductance ($k_{2t}T$) measurements already proved the non-Abelian nature of the $\nu=5/2$ FQH state, they might have been prone to a lack of thermal equilibration among the counter-propagating edge modes. Here, we report a novel thermal Hall conductance measurement of the $\nu=5/2$ and $\nu=7/2$ states, being insensitive to equilibration among edge modes. We verify the state's non-Abelian nature, with both states supporting a single upstream Majorana edge mode (hence, a particle-hole Pfaffian order). While current numerical works predict a different topological order, this contribution should motivate further theoretical work.

The Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) is a prototypical realization of a topological state of matter. It emerges from a subtle interplay between topology, interactions, and disorder. The disorder enables the formation of localized states in the bulk that stabilize the quantum Hall states with respect to the magnetic field and carrier density. Still, the details of the localized states and their contribution to transport remain beyond the reach of most experimental techniques. Here, we describe an extensive study of the bulk's heat conductance. Using a novel 'multi-terminal' short device (on a scale of $10 \mu m$), we separate the longitudinal thermal conductance, $\kappa_{xx}T$ (due to bulk's contribution), from the topological transverse value $\kappa_{xy}T$, by eliminating the contribution of the edge modes. When the magnetic field is tuned away from the conductance plateau center, the localized states in the bulk conduct heat efficiently ($\kappa_{xx}T \propto T$), while the bulk remains electrically insulating. Fractional states in the first excited Landau level, such as the $\nu=7/3$ and $\nu=5/2$, conduct heat throughout the plateau with a finite $\kappa_{xx} T$. We propose a theoretical model that identifies the localized states as the cause of the finite heat conductance, agreeing qualitatively with our experimental findings., Comment: 30 pages 11 figures

Interferometry is a vital tool for studying fundamental features in the quantum Hall effect (QHE). For instance, Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference in a quantum Hall interferometer can probe the wave-particle duality of electrons and quasiparticles. Here, we report an unusual AB interference in a quantum Hall Fabry-P\'erot interferometer (FPI), whose Coulomb interactions were suppressed with a grounded drain in the interior bulk of the FPI. In a descending filling factor from $\nu =3$ to $\nu\approx5/3$, the magnetic field periodicity, which corresponded to a single 'flux quantum,' agreed accurately with the enclosed area of the FPI. However, in the filling range, $\nu\approx5/3$ to ${\nu}=1$, the field periodicity increased markedly, apriori suggesting a drastic shrinkage of the AB area. Moreover, the modulation gate voltage periodicity decreased abruptly at this range. We attribute these unexpected observations to a ubiquitous edge reconstruction, leading to dynamical area changing with the field and a modified modulation gate-edge capacitance. The remarkable Cooper-like pairing phenomenon in the Aharonov-Bohm interference of a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI)$\rm{-}$operating in the integer quantum Hall regime$\rm{-}$remains baffling. Here, we report the interference of paired electrons employing 'interface edge modes'. These modes are born at the interface between the bulk of the FPI and an outer gated region tuned to a lower filling factor. Such configuration allows toggling the spin and the orbital of the Landau level (LL) of the edge modes at the interface. Correlations of partitioned particles carry essential information about their quantumness. Partitioning full beams of charged particles leads to current fluctuations, with their autocorrelation (namely, shot noise) revealing the particle' charge. This is not the case when the partitioned particle beams are diluted. Bosons or fermions will exhibit particles antibunching (due to their sparsity and discreteness). However, when diluted anyons, such as the quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall states, are partitioned in a narrow constriction, their autocorrelation reveals an essential aspect of their exchange statistics: their braiding phase. Here, we describe detailed measurements of weak partitioned, highly diluted, one-dimension-like edge modes of the one-third filling fractional quantum Hall state. The measured autocorrelation agrees with our theory of braiding anyons in the time-domain (instead of braiding in space); with a braiding phase 2$\theta$=2$\pi$/3, without any fitting parameters. Our work offers a relatively straightforward and simple method to observe the braiding statistics of other exotic anyonic states, such as non-abelian states, without resorting to complex interference experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Thermal conductance measurements, sensitive to charge and chargeless energy flow, are evolving as an essential measurement technique in Condensed Matter Physics. For two-dimensional topological insulators, the measurements of the thermal Hall conductance, $\kappa_{xy}T$, and the longitudinal one $\kappa_{xx}T$, are crucial for the understanding of their underlying topological order. Such measurements are thus far lacking, even in the extensively studied quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime. Here, we report a new local power measurement technique that reveals the topological thermal Hall conductance (not the ubiquitous two-terminal one). For example, we find $\kappa_{xy}\sim0$ of the challenging $\nu=2/3$ particle-hole conjugated state. This is in contrast to the two-terminal measurement, which provides a non-universal value that depends on the extent of thermal equilibration between the counter-propagating edge modes. Moreover, we use this technique to study the power carried by the current fluctuations in a partitioned edge mode with an out-of-equilibrium distribution.

The fractional quantum Hall states have long been predicted to be a testing ground of fractional (anyonic) exchange statistics. These topological states harbor quasiparticles with fractional charges of both abelian and non-abelian characters. The quasiparticles' charge is commonly determined by shot noise measurements (1, 2), and states' statistics can be revealed by appropriately interfering the quasiparticles. While the multipath Fabry-Perot electronic interferometer (FPI) is easier to fabricate, it is often plagued by Coulomb interactions (3), its area breathes with the magnetic field (4), and its bulk's charges tend to fluctuate (5). Recent FPI experiments employing adequate screening allowed an observation of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference at bulk filling $\nu$=1/3 (6). In the current work, we chose to employ an interaction-free, two-path, Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), tuned to bulk filling $\nu$=2/5. Interfering the outer $\nu$=1/3 mode (with the inner $\nu$=1/15 mode screening out the bulk), we observed a 'dressed AB' periodicity, with a combined 'bare AB' flux periodicity of three flux-quanta (3$\phi_0$) and the 'braiding phase' 2$\pi$/3. This unique interference resulted with an AB periodicity of a single flux-quantum. Moreover, the visibility of the interference, $v_{e/3}$, deviated markedly from that of the electronic one $\it{v}_{e}$, agreeing with the theoretically expected visibility, $\it{v}_{e/3} \sim {\it{v}_e}^3$. With the two non-equivalent drains of the MZI, the fractional visibility peaked away from the ubiquitous transmission-half of the MZI. We provide simple theoretical arguments that support our results. The MZI proves to be a powerful tool that can be used to probe further the statistics of more complex anyonic quasiparticles.

The fractional charge of quasiparticles is a fundamental feature of quantum Hall effect (QHE) States. The charge has long been measured via shot-noise at moderate temperatures ($T$>30mK), with the Fano factor $F=e^*/e$ revealing the charge $e^*$ of the quasiparticles. However, at sufficiently low temperatures ($T\approx$10mK), we consistently find $F$ being equal to the bulk filling factor, $\nu_b$. Surprisingly, noise with $F=\nu_b$ is also observed on intermediate conductance plateaus in the transmission of the quantum point contact (QPC), where shot noise is not expected. We attribute the unexpected Fano factor to upstream neutral modes, which proliferate at the lowest spinless Landau level. The universality of the Fano factor is also confirmed when the edge modes do not conform to the bulk. For this, the ubiquitous edge modes at the periphery of the sample are replaced by artificially constructed 'interface modes', propagating at the interface between two adjoined QHE states: the tested state and a different state. Non-abelian anyons are prospective candidates for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation due to their long-range entanglement. Curiously these quasiparticles are charge-neutral, hence elusive to most conventional measurement techniques. A proposed host of such quasiparticles is the $\nu$=5/2 quantum Hall state. The gapless edge modes can provide the topological order of the state, which in turn identifies the chirality of the non-abelian mode. Since the $\nu$=5/2 state hosts a variety of edge modes (integer, fractional, neutral), a robust technique is needed to isolate the fractional channel while retaining its original non-abelian character. Moreover, a single non-abelian channel can be easily manipulated to interfere, thus revealing the state's immunity to decoherence. In this work, we exploit a novel approach to gap-out the integer modes of the $\nu$=5/2 state by interfacing the state with integer states, $\nu$=2 & $\nu$=3 (1). The electrical conductance of the isolated interface channel was 0.5e$^2$/h, as expected. More importantly, we find a thermal conductance of 0.5$\kappa_0$T (with $\kappa_0$=$\pi^2k_B^2$/3h), confirming unambiguously the non-abelian nature of the $\nu$=1/2 interface channel and its Particle-Hole Pfaffian topological order. Our result opens new avenues to manipulate and test other exotic QHE states and braid, via interference, the isolated fractional channels., Comment: 20 pages, 4 main figures

Quantum Hall states - the progenitors of the growing family of topological insulators -- are rich source of exotic quantum phases. The nature of these states is reflected in the gapless edge modes, which in turn can be classified as integer - carrying electrons, fractional - carrying fractional charges; and neutral - carrying excitations with zero net charge but a well-defined amount of heat. The latter two may obey anyonic statistics, which can be abelian or non-abelian. The most-studied putative non-abelian state is the spin-polarized filling factor {\nu}=5/2, whose charge e/4 quasiparticles are accompanied by neutral modes. This filling, however, permits different possible topological orders, which can be abelian or non-abelian. While numerical calculations favor the non-abelian anti-Pfaffian (A-Pf) order to have the lowest energy, recent thermal conductance measurements suggested the experimentally realized order to be the particle-hole Pfaffian (PH-Pf) order. It has been suggested that lack of thermal equilibration among the different edge modes of the A-Pf order can account for this discrepancy. The identification of the topological order is crucial for the interpretation of braiding (interference) operations, better understanding of the thermal equilibration process, and the reliability of the numerical studies. We developed a new method that helps identifying the topological order of the {\nu}=5/2 state. By creating an interface between the two 2D half-planes, one hosting the {\nu}=5/2 state and the other an integer {\nu}=3 state, the interface supported a fractional {\nu}=1/2 charge mode with 1/2 quantum conductance and a neutral Majorana mode. The presence of the Majorana mode, probed by measuring noise, propagating in the opposite direction to the charge mode, asserted the presence of the PH-Pf order but not that of the A-Pf order., Comment: 36 pages, 4 main figures, supplementary data

Studies of energy flow in quantum systems complement the information provided by common conductance measurements. The quantum limit of heat flow in one dimensional (1D) ballistic modes was predicted, and experimentally demonstrated, to have a universal value for bosons, fermions, and fractionally charged anyons. A fraction of this value is expected in non-abelian states. Nevertheless, open questions about energy relaxation along the propagation length in 1D modes remain. Here, we introduce a novel experimental setup that measures the energy relaxation in chiral 1D modes of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). Edge modes, emanating from a heated reservoir, are partitioned by a quantum point contact (QPC) located at their path. The resulting noise allows a determination of the 'effective temperature' at the location of the QPC. We found energy relaxation in all the tested QHE states, being integers or fractional. However, the relaxation was found to be mild in particle-like states, and prominent in hole-conjugate states.

According to the bulk-edge correspondence principle, the physics of the gapless edge in the quantum Hall effect determines topological order in the gapped bulk. As the bulk is less accessible, the last two decades saw the emergence of several experimental techniques that invoke the study of the compressible edge. We review the properties of the edge, and describe several experimental techniques that include shot noise and thermal noise measurements, interferometry, and energy (thermal) transport at the edge. We pay special attention to the filling factor 5/2 in the first excited Landau level (in two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs), where experimental evidence of a non-abelian topological order was found. A brief discussion is devoted to recent interferometry experiments that uncovered unexpected physics in the integer quantum Hall effect. Electrons living in a two-dimensional world under a strong magnetic field - the so-called fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) - often manifest themselves as fractionally charged quasiparticles (anyons). Moreover, being under special conditions they are expected to be immune to the environment, thus may serve as building blocks for future quantum computers. Interference of such anyons is the very first step towards understanding their anyonic statistics. However, the complex edge-modes structure of the fractional quantum Hall states, combined with upstream neutral modes, have been suspected to prevent an observation of the much sought after interference of anyons. Here, we report of finding a direct correlation between the appearance of neutral modes and the gradual disappearance of interference in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), as the bulk filling factor is lowered towards Landau filling {\nu}_B =1; followed by a complete interference quench at {\nu}_B=1. Specifically, the interference was found to start diminishing at {\nu}_B~1.5 with a growing upstream neutral mode, which was detected by a born upstream shot noise in the input quantum point contact (QPC) to the MZI. Moreover, at the same time a {\nu}_QPC =1/3 conductance plateau, carrying shot-noise, appeared in the transmission of the QPC - persisting until bulk filling {\nu}_B =1/2. We identified this conductance plateau to result from edge reconstruction, which leads to an upstream neutral mode. Here, we also show that even the particle-like quasiparticles are accompanied by upstream neutral modes, therefore suppressing interference in the FQHE regime., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Topological edge-reconstruction occurs in hole-conjugate states of the fractional quantum Hall effect. The frequently studied polarized state of filling factor v=2/3 was originally proposed to harbor two counter-propagating edge modes: a downstream v=1 and an upstream v=1/3. However, charge equilibration between these two modes always led to an observed downstream v=2/3 charge mode accompanied by an upstream neutral mode (preventing an observation of the original proposal). Here, we present a new approach to synthetize the v=2/3 edge mode from its basic counter-propagating charged constituents, allowing a controlled equilibration between the two counter-propagating charge modes. This novel platform is based on a carefully designed double-quantum-well, which hosts two populated electronic sub-bands (lower and upper), with corresponding filling factors, vl & vu. By separating the 2D plane to two gated intersecting halves, each with different fillings, counter-propagating chiral modes can be formed along the intersection line. Equilibration between these modes can be controlled with the top gates' voltage and the magnetic field. Our measurements of the two-terminal conductance G2T and the presence of a neutral mode allowed following the transition from the non-equilibrated charged modes, manifested by G2T=(4/3)e2/h, to the fully equilibrated modes, with a downstream charge mode with G2T=(2/3)e2/h accompanied by an upstream neutral mode., Comment: 16 pages,4 figures

The quantum Hall effect, observed in a two-dimensional electron gas subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, imposes a 1D-like chiral, downstream, transport of charge carriers along the sample edges. Although this picture remains valid for electrons and Laughlin's fractional quasiparticles, it no longer holds for quasiparticles in the so-called hole-conjugate states. These states are expected, when disorder and interactions are weak, to harbor upstream charge modes. However, so far, charge currents were observed to flow exclusively downstream in the quantum Hall regime. Studying the canonical spin-polarized and spin-unpolarized $\nu=2/3$ hole-like states in GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructures, we observed a significant upstream charge current at short propagation distances in the spin unpolarized state

Majorana 'zero-modes' are expected to be immune to decoherence. The primary method for their characterization in a 1D topological superconductor, is measuring the tunneling current into the edge of the superconductor. Presently, the hallmark of a localized Majorana edge-state is an emergent quantized zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). However, such a conductance peak can also result from other mechanisms; e.g., crossing (and sticking) of two branches of a standard Andreev bound state, or a soft potential at the edge of the superconductor. Since the emergence of a 'Majorana-ZBCP' must be accompanied by an opening of a topological gap in the bulk, we performed two simultaneous tunneling measurements: one in the bulk and another at the edge of the 1D superconductor. Measurements were performed with an InAs nanowire in-situ coated with epitaxial aluminum. For particular gate-tuning of the chemical potential in the wire and a Zeeman field parallel to the wire, we observed a closing of the superconducting bulk-gap followed by its reopening concomitant with the appearance of a ZBCP at the edge. We note that a ZBCP could also be observed with different tuning parameters without an observed reopening of the bulk-gap. This demonstrates the importance of simultaneous probing of the bulk and edge when searching for a Majorana edge-state., Comment: 4 figures

Controlling the transmission of electrical current using a quantum point contact constriction paved a way to a large variety of experiments in mesoscopic physics. The increasing interest in heat transfer in such systems fosters questions about possible manipulations of quantum heat modes that do not carry net charge(neutral modes). Here, we study the transmission of upstream neutral modes through a quantum point contact in fractional hole-conjugate quantum Hall states. Employing two different measurement techniques, we were able to render the relative spatial distribution of these chargeless modes with their charged counter-parts. In these states, which were found to harbor more than one downstream charge mode, the upstream neutral modes are found to flow with the inner charge mode - as theoretically predicted. These results unveil a universal upstream heat current structure and open the path for more complex engineering of heat flows and cooling mechanisms in quantum nano-electronic devices.

Electrons that are confined to a single Landau level in a two dimensional electron gas realize the effects of strong electron-electron repulsion in its purest form. The kinetic energy of individual electrons is completely quenched and all physical properties are dictated solely by many-body effects. A remarkable consequence is the emergence of new quasiparticles with fractional charge and exotic quantum statistics of which the most exciting ones are non-Abelian quasiparticles. A non-integer quantized thermal Hall conductance $\kappa_{xy}$ (in units of temperature times the universal constant $\pi^2 k_B^2 /3 h$; $h$ is the Planck constant and $k_B$ the Boltzmann constant) necessitates the existence of such quasiparticles. It has been predicted, and verified numerically, that such states are realized in the clean half-filled first Landau level of electrons with Coulomb repulsion, with $\kappa_{xy}$ being either $3/2$ or $7/2$. Excitingly, a recent experiment has indeed observed a half-integer value, which was measured, however, to be $\kappa_{xy}=5/2$. We resolve this contradiction within a picture where smooth disorder results in the formation of mesoscopic puddles with locally $\kappa_{xy}=3/2$ or $7/2$. Interactions between these puddles generate a coherent macroscopic state, which is reflected in an extended plateau with quantized $\kappa_{xy}=5/2$. The topological properties of quasiparticles at large distances are determined by the macroscopic phase, and not by the microscopic puddle where they reside. In principle, the same mechanism might also allow non-Abelian quasiparticles to emerge from a system comprised of microscopic Abelian puddles., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Topological states of matter are characterized by topological invariant, which are physical quantities whose values are quantized and do not depend on details of the measured system. Of these, the easiest to probe in experiments is the electrical Hall conductance, which is expressed in units of $e^2/h$ ($e$ the electron charge, $h$ the Planck's constant). In the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), fractional quantized values of the electrical Hall conductance attest to topologically ordered states, which are states that carry quasi particles with fractional charge and anyonic statistics. Another topological invariant, which is much harder to measure, is the thermal Hall conductance, expressed in units of $\kappa_0T=(\pi^2kB^2/3h)T$ ($kB$ the Boltzmann constant, $T$ the temperature). For the quantized thermal Hall conductance, a fractional value attests that the probed state of matter is non-abelian. Quasi particles in non-abelian states lead to a ground state degeneracy and perform topological unitary transformations among ground states when braided. As such, they may be useful for topological quantum computation. In this paper, we report our measurements of the thermal Hall conductance for several quantum Hall states in the first excited Landau level. Remarkably, we find the thermal Hall conductance of the $\nu=5/2$ state to be fractional, and to equal $2.5\kappa_0T$, Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

Electronic systems harboring one dimensional helical modes, where the spin and momentum of the electron are locked, have lately become an important field of its own. When coupled to a conventional superconductor, such systems are expected to manifest topological superconductivity, a unique phase that gives rise to exotic Majorana zero modes. Even more interesting are fractional helical states which have not been observed before and which open the route for the realization of the generalized para fermions quasiparticles. Possessing non abelian exchange statistics, these quasiparticles may serve as building blocks in topological quantum computing. Here, we present a new approach to form protected one dimensional helical and fractional helical edge modes in the quantum Hall regime. The novel platform is based on a carefully designed double quantum well structure in a high mobility GaAs based system. In turn, the quantum well hosts two sub bands of 2D electrons, each tuned to the quantum Hall effect regime. By electrostatic gating of different areas of the structure, counter propagating integer, as well as fractional, edge modes, belonging to Landau levels with opposite spins are formed, rendering the modes helical. We demonstrate that due to spin protection, these helical modes remain ballistic, without observed mixing for large distances. In addition to the formation of helical modes, this new platform can be exploited as a rich playground for an artificial induction of compounded fractional edge modes, as well as construction of interferometers based on chiral edge modes.

The quantum of heat conductance of ballistic one-dimensional (1D) channels, being gQ=k0T with k0=pi^2*2kB^2/3h (T - temperature, kB - Boltzmann's constant, h - Planck's constant), is an important fundamental constant. While the quantization of the electrical conductance of 1D ballistic conductors has long been experimentally established, a demonstration of the quantization of thermal conductance proved to be much harder. It has already been accomplished for weakly interacting systems of phonons, photons, and electronic Fermi-liquids. Theoretically, however, the quantization must also hold in strongly interacting systems, such as the Fractional Quantum Hall effect (FQHE), where electrons fractionalize into anyons and chargeless quasiparticles such as neutral Majorana fermions. Since the bulk in the FQHE is incompressible, it is not expected to contribute significantly to the heat conductance, which is determined by chiral 1D edge modes. The thermal conductance reflects topological properties of the FQH electronic systems to which the electrical conductance gives no access. Here, we present results of extensive measurements of the heat conductance in 'particle-like' (Laughlin's) and 'hole-like' fractional states. We verify the universal value of the quantum of thermal conductance of the charged fractional modes as well as for chargeless neutral modes. We also prove the validity of the theoretical predictions for the more complex (and less studied) 'hole-like' states. Heat transport measurements open a door to ample information, not easily accessible by conductance measurements.

We report an observation of a new, non dissipative and non local supercurrent, carried by quartets; each consisting of four entangled electrons. The supercurrent is a result of a novel Andreev bound state (ABS), formed among three superconducting terminals. While in a two-terminal Josephson junction the usual ABS, and thus the DC Josephson current, exist only in equilibrium, in the present realization the ABS exists also in the strongly nonlinear regime (biased terminals). The presence of supercurrent carried by quartets was established by performing non-local conductance and cross-correlation of current fluctuations measurements, in different devices made of aluminum-InAs nanowire junctions. An extensive and detailed theoretical study is intertwined with the experimental results.

The recent, unexpected, findings of upstream neutral modes in particle-like fractional quantum Hall states, led to a realization that the nature of the neutral modes is far from being understood. Moreover, the observation of spatially separated of (at least) two downstream charge modes in hole-conjugate states (see Part One - Conductance), still faces unresolved contradictions between conductance and noise measurements. In this work we show how current fluctuations measured in various configurations shed light on the interplay between neutral and charge modes. We demonstrate that once one of the charge modes is taken out of equilibrium, counter-propagating neutral modes born in the equilibration process affect the upstream charge modes, giving rise to a novel mechanism for shot noise with quantized Fano factors. Questions on the nature of edge reconstruction and "where does the current flow" in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) have been debated for years. Moreover, the recent observation of proliferation of "upstream" neutral modes in the fractional QHE raised doubts about the present models of edge channels. In this article we focus on hole-conjugate states, nu=2/3 and nu=3/5, and present a new picture of their edge reconstruction. For example, while the present model for nu=2/3 consists of a single downstream charge channel with conductance 2/3 e^2/h and an upstream neutral mode, we show that the current is carried by two separate downstream edge channels, each with conductance 1/3 e^2/h, accompanied by upstream neutral mode(s). We find that if the two downstream channels are not equilibrated, inter-mode equilibration (via particle exchange) takes place over a distance of microns, with the two channels effectively behaving as a single channel. Moreover, the inter-channel equilibration is accompanied by an excitation of upstream neutral modes. In turn, the counter-propagating neutral modes, moving in close proximity to the charge modes, fragment into propagating charges, inducing thus downstream current fluctuations with zero net current - a novel mechanism for non-equilibrium noise. This unexpected edge reconstruction underlines the need for better understanding of edge reconstruction and energy transport in all fractional QHE states.

This work was motivated by the quest for observing interference of fractionally charged quasi particles. Here, we study the behavior of an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) at the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) regime at filling factors greater than one. Both the visibility and the drift velocity were measured, and were found to be highly correlated as function of filling factor. As the filling factor approached unity, the visibility quenched, not to recover for filling factors smaller than unity. Alternatively, the velocity saturated around a minimal value at unity filling factor. We highlight the significant role interactions between the interfering edge and the bulk play, as well as that of the defining potential at the edge. Shot noise measurements suggest that phase-averaging (due to phase randomization), rather than single particle decoherence, is likely to be the cause of the dephasing in the fractional regime., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Non-linear charge transport in SIS Josephson junctions has a unique signature in the shuttled charge quantum between the two superconductors. In the zero-bias limit Cooper pairs, each with twice the electron charge, carry the Josephson current. An applied bias $V_{SD}$ leads to multiple Andreev reflections (MAR), which in the limit of weak tunneling probability should lead to integer multiples of the electron charge $ne$ traversing the junction, with $n$ integer larger than $2{\Delta}/eV_{SD}$ and ${\Delta}$ the superconducting order parameter. Exceptionally, just above the gap, $eV_{SD}>2{\Delta}$, with Andreev reflections suppressed, one would expect the current to be carried by partitioned quasiparticles; each with energy dependent charge, being a superposition of an electron and a hole. Employing shot noise measurements in an SIS junction induced in an InAs nanowire (with noise proportional to the partitioned charge), we first observed quantization of the partitioned charge $q=e^*/e=n$, with $n=1-4$; thus reaffirming the validity of our charge interpretation. Concentrating next on the bias region $eV_{SD}{\approx}2{\Delta}$, we found a reproducible and clear dip in the extracted charge to $q{\approx}0.6$, which, after excluding other possibilities, we attribute to the partitioned quasiparticle charge. Such dip is supported by numerical simulations of our SIS structure.

It is well established that 'density reconstruction' at the edge of a two dimensional electron gas takes place for 'hole-conjugate' states in the fractional quantum Hall effect (such as ${\nu}=2/3, 3/5,$ etc.). Such reconstruction leads, after equilibration between counter propagating edge channels, to a downstream chiral current edge mode accompanied by upstream chiral neutral modes (carrying energy without net charge). Short equilibration length prevented thus far observation of the counter propagating current channels - the hallmark of density reconstruction. Here, we provide evidence for such non-equilibrated counter-propagating current channels, in short regions $(l=4{\mu}m$ and $l=0.4{\mu}m)$ of fractional filling ${\nu}=2/3$, and, unexpectedly, ${\nu}=1/3$, sandwiched between two regions of integer filling ${\nu}=1$. Rather than a two-terminal fractional conductance, the conductance exhibited a significant ascension towards unity quantum conductance $(G_Q=e^2/h)$ at or near the fractional plateaus. We attribute this conductance rise to the presence of a non-equilibrated downstream ${\nu}=1$ channel in the fractional short regions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material

Electron pairing is a rare phenomenon appearing only in a few unique physical systems; e.g., superconductors and Kondo-correlated quantum dots. Here, we report on an unexpected, but robust, electron "pairing" in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) regime. The pairing takes place within an interfering edge channel circulating in an electronic Fabry-Perot interferometer at a wide range of bulk filling factors, $2<{\nu} _B<5$. The main observations are: (a) High visibility Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations with magnetic flux periodicity ${\Delta}{\phi}={\varphi}_0/2=h/2e$ (instead of the ubiquitous $h/e$), with $e$ the electron charge and $h$ the Planck constant; (b) An interfering quasiparticle charge $e ^* {\sim} 2e$ - revealed by quantum shot noise measurements; and (c) Full dephasing of the $h/2e$ periodicity by induced dephasing of the adjacent edge channel (while keeping the interfering edge channel intact) : a clear realization of inter-channel entanglement. While this pairing phenomenon clearly results from inter-channel interaction, the exact mechanism that leads to e-e attraction within a single edge channel is not clear.

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is a canonical example of a topological phase in a correlated 2D electron gas under strong magnetic field. While electric currents propagate as chiral downstream edge modes, chargeless upstream chiral neutral edge modes were recently observed only in hole-conjugate states (states filling \nu, n+1/2<\nu

Charge fractionalization is a possible emergent excitation in a low-dimensional system of interacting electrons. A known example is that of fractional charges in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) regime, which is a consequence of strong Coulomb interaction among the electrons whose kinetic energy is quenched by the strong magnetic field. Alternatively, the integer QHE (IQHE), with electrons behaving largely as independent particles in Landau levels (LLs), lacks such fractionalization. However, for integer LLs filling v=2, 3,... electrons propagate in copropagating adjacent chiral edge channels, and thus interact and modify the non-interacting LLs. For example, at v=2, an electron injected selectively into a single non-interacting (bare) edge channel is expected to decompose into a 'fast' mode and a 'slow' mode in the region of interaction; each mode carry fractional charges shared between the two bare channels. Here, we report our sensitive shot noise measurement that affirms the presence of such fractionalization in v=2. Injecting partitioned current into a 'hot' edge channel led to low frequency shot noise in the adjacent currentless 'cold' edge channel after it had been partitioned. Controlling the partitioning of the hot and cold channels allowed a determination of the fractional charges in both channels as well as the channels' velocity difference. This approach can be easily extended to study interaction in two-dimensional systems with a topology dictating edge channels transport.

Majorana fermions are the only fermionic particles that are expected to be their own antiparticles. While elementary particles of the Majorana type were not identified yet, quasi-particles with Majorana like properties, born from interacting electrons in the solid, were predicted to exist. Here, we present thorough experimental studies, backed by numerical simulations, of a system composed of an aluminum superconductor in proximity to an indium arsenide nanowire, with the latter possessing strong spin-orbit coupling. An induced 1d topological superconductor - supporting Majorana fermions at both ends - is expected to form. We concentrate on the characteristics of a distinct zero bias conductance peak (ZBP), and its splitting in energy, both appearing only with a small magnetic field applied along the wire. The ZBP was found to be robustly tied to the Fermi energy over a wide range of system parameters. While not providing a definite proof of a Majorana state, the presented data and the simulations support strongly its existence.

Upstream neutral modes, counter propagating to charge modes and carrying energy without net charge, had been predicted to exist in some of the fractional quantum Hall states and were recently observed via noise measurements. Understanding such modes will assist in identifying the wavefunction of these states, as well as shedding light on the role of Coulomb interactions within edge modes. In this work, performed mainly in the nu=2/3 state, we placed a quantum dot a few micrometers upstream of an ohmic contact, which served as a neutral modes source. We showed the neutral modes heat the input of the dot, causing a net thermo-electric current to flow through it. Heating of the electrons led to a decay of the neutral mode, manifested in the vanishing of the thermo-electric current at T>110mK. This setup provides a straightforward method to investigate upstream neutral modes without turning to the more cumbersome noise measurements., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures

Entanglement, being at the heart of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox, is a necessary ingredient in processing quantum information. Cooper pairs in superconductors - being composites of two fully entangled electrons - can be split adiabatically, thus forming entangled electrons. We fabricated such electron splitter by contacting an aluminum superconductor strip at the center of a suspended InAs nanowire; terminated at both ends with two normal metallic drains. Intercepting each half of the nanowire by gate - induced Coulomb blockaded quantum dot strongly impeded the flow of Cooper pairs due to large charging energy, while still permitting passage of single electrons. Here, we provide conclusive evidence of extremely high efficiency Cooper pairs splitting via observing positive average (conductance) and time (shot noise) correlations of the split electrons in the two opposite drains of the nanowire. Moreover, The actual charge of the injected quasiparticles was verified by shot noise measurements.

In the quantum Hall effect regime, taking place in a two-dimensional-electron gas under strong magnetic field, currents flow along the edges of the sample. For some particle-hole conjugate states of the fractional regime, e.g., with filling between 1/2 and 1 of the lowest Landau level; early predictions suggested the presence of counter-propagating edge currents in addition to the expected ones. When this did not agree with the measured conductance, it was suggested that disorder and interactions will lead to counterpropagating modes that carry only energy - the so called neutral modes. In addition, a neutral upstream mode (Majorana mode) was also expected for selected wavefunctions proposed for the even denominator filling 5/2. Here we report on the direct observation of counter-propagating neutral modes in fillings 2/3, 3/5 and 5/2. This was done by injecting such modes and allowing them to impinge on a narrow constriction, which partly reflected them, with two main observed effects: (a) A resultant shot noise proportional to the applied voltage on the injecting contact; (b) With simultaneously injecting also a charge mode, the presence of the neutral mode was found to significantly affect the Fano factor and the temperature of the backscattered charge mode. In particular, such observation for filling 5/2, may single out the non-abelian wavefunctions for the state., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Charge excitations in a two dimensional electron gas, under a quantizing magnetic field and in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime, flow in one dimensional-like strips along the edges of the sample. These excitations (quasiparticles) may be independent or condense into an interacting chiral Luttinger liquid. Adding a backscattering potential, which reflects a forward propagating quasiparticle to a backward propagating one, partitions the stream of quasiparticles and induces quantum shot noise. The noise is proportional to quasiparticles charge and may be affected by their mutual interactions. The exact structure of edge modes in `hole conjugate' fractional quantum Hall states remains an unsolved issue despite significant experimental and theoretical efforts devoted to their understanding. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in such studies led by the search for neutral modes, which in some cases may lead to exotic statistical properties of the excitations. In this letter we report on detailed measurements of shot noise, produced by partitioning of the more familiar 2/3 state. We find a fractional charge of (2/3)e at the lowest temperature, decreasing to e/3 at an elevated temperature. Surprisingly, strong shot noise had been measured on a clear 1/3 plateau upon partitioning the 2/3 state. Interference of edge channels is expected to be a prominent tool for studying statistics of charged quasiparticles in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) [A. Stern (2008), Ann. Phys. 1:204; C. Chamon et al. (1997), Phys. Rev. B, 55:2331]. We present here a detailed study of an electronic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) operating in the QHE regime [C. Chamon et al. (1997), Phys. Rev. B, 55:2331], with the phase of the interfering quasiparticles controlled by the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. Our main finding is that Coulomb interactions among the electrons dominate the interference, even in a relatively large area FPI, leading to a strong dependence of the area enclosed by the interference loop on the magnetic field. In particular, for a composite edge structure, with a few independent edge channels propagating along the edge, interference of the outmost edge channel (belonging to the lowest Landau level) was insensitive to magnetic field; suggesting a constant enclosed flux. However, when any of the inner edge channels interfered, the enclosed flux decreased when the magnetic field increased. By intentionally varying the enclosed area with a biased metallic gate and observing the periodicity of the interference pattern, charges e (for integer filling factors) and e/3 (for a fractional filling factor) were found to be expelled from the FPI. According to Bohr's complementarity principle, a particle possesses wave-like properties only when the different paths the particle may take are indistinguishable. In a canonical example of a two-path interferometer with a which-path detector, observation of interference and obtaining which-path information are mutually exclusive. Such duality has been demonstrated in optics with a pair of correlated photons and in solid-state devices with phase-coherent electrons. In the latter case, which-path information was provided by a charge detector embedded near one path of a two-path electron interferometer. Note that suppression of interference can always be understood either as obtaining path information or as unavoidable back action by the detector. The present study reports on dephasing of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring interferometer via a coupled charge detector adjacent to the ring. In contrast to the two-path interferometer, charge detection in the ring does not always provide path information. Indeed, we found that the interference was suppressed only when path information could be acquired, even if only in principle. This demonstrates that dephasing does not always take place by coupling the `environment' to the interfering particle: path information of the particle must be available too. Moreover, this is valid regardless of the strength of environment-interferometer coupling, which refutes the general notion of the effect of strong interaction with the environment. In other words, it verifies that an acquisition of which-path information is more fundamental than the back-action in understanding quantum mechanical complementarity., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Resonant tunneling through identical potential barriers is a textbook problem in quantum mechanics. Its solution yields total transparency (100% tunneling) at discrete energies. This dramatic phenomenon results from coherent interference among many trajectories, and it is the basis of transport through periodic structures. Resonant tunneling of electrons is commonly seen in semiconducting 'quantum dots'. Here we demonstrate that detecting (distinguishing) electron trajectories in a quantum dot (QD) renders the QD nearly insulating. We couple trajectories in the QD to a 'detector' by employing edge channels in the integer quantum Hall regime. That is, we couple electrons tunneling through an inner channel to electrons in the neighboring outer, 'detector' channel. A small bias applied to the detector channel suffices to dephase (quench) the resonant tunneling completely. We derive a formula for dephasing that agrees well with our data and implies that just a few electrons passing through the detector channel suffice to dephase the QD completely. This basic experiment shows how path detection in a QD induces a transition from delocalization (due to coherent tunneling) to localization (sequential tunneling).
