5. Boundaries in Visualizing Mathematical Behaviour

Abstract

It is surprising to students to learn that a natural combination of simple functions, the function sin(1/x), exhibits behaviour that is a great challenge to visualize. When x is large the function is relatively easy to draw; as x gets smaller the function begins to behave in an increasingly wild manner. The sin(1/x) function can serve as one of their first counterexamples, helping them to better appreciate the tamer functions that they normally encounter. I see three boundaries here. First, a boundary erected by mathematicians between "nice" versus "wild" functions--captured for example by the concept of continuity. Second, a boundary between those functions that are most often studied in calculus and pre-calculus classrooms, and those that are more rarely looked at. Third, the boundary between the drawable and the undrawable. In this example, we can witness this last boundary first-hand even as we attempt to sketch the curve. Yet, we can also continue the visualization in our mind's eye beyond what we can represent on paper.

Abstract

The American industrialist Charles Lang Freer (1854–1919) amassed an outstanding collection of Asian, Near Eastern, and contemporary American art that he bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institution in 1906, together with plans for a museum to house his collection, the Freer Gallery of Art. Deeply influenced by the innovative American artist and Japoniste James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), Freer envisioned the museum as a holistic setting for his collection, harmonizing aesthetics from both East and West. Freer's meticulous attention to design and detail extended to the mountings for his large collection of Chinese and Japanese paintings. His plans included hiring scroll mounters from Japan to remount over 350 of the paintings onto panels, choosing antique textiles to suit his taste, a taste inspired by antiquarian trends. Together with archival records and textile sample books, an album of photographs and other mementos from the Miura family of mounters recently acquired by the museum elucidates this remarkable achievement and the historical context of Japanese scroll mounting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Abstract

In this article, we review the publications served by the "Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education" in the past 15 years, specific to the field of mathematics education, and make connections with development of the field. In particular, we adopt current Editor-in-Chief John Wallace's (2009) approach of "looking back, looking forward," to reflect on the journal's development both qualitatively, by recapping significant moments of the journal and highlighting recurrent themes, and quantitatively, by reviewing the number of contributions in terms of country, language, and genre. In looking forward, we inform a discussion of future directions of the journal.

Abstract

Genome-wide analysis of 67 ancient Near Eastern cattle, Bos taurus, remains reveals regional variation that has since been obscured by admixture in modern populations. Comparisons of genomes of early domestic cattle to their aurochs progenitors identify diverse origins with separate introgressions of wild stock. A later region-wide Bronze Age shift indicates rapid and widespread introgression of zebu, Bos indicus, from the Indus Valley. This process was likely stimulated at the onset of the current geological age, similar to 4.2 thousand years ago, by a widespread multicentury drought. In contrast to genome-wide admixture, mitochondrial DNA stasis supports that this introgression was male-driven, suggesting that selection of arid-adapted zebu bulls enhanced herd survival. This human-mediated migration of zebu-derived genetics has continued through millennia, altering tropical herding on each continent.

SummaryTraditional East Asian paintings evolved over centuries into physically and aesthetically sophisticated objects. Made with delicate materials and time-honoured methods, East Asian scrolls, screens, and albums are complex, laminate mounting structures that are easily damaged by mishandling and unstable environmental conditions. In the East, customary practices for display, storage, and connoisseurship have been essential for long-term preservation. For East Asian paintings housed in the West, concerns have arisen about appropriate measures for care and maintenance in modern museum environments. Based on experience as a traditionally trained East Asian painting conservator and informed by Western preventive conservation practices, the author presents relevant traditional methods and modem innovations for the safe display, storage and handling of scrolls, screens and albums. Broken into three sections, the article introduces guidelines and practical suggestions to determine suitable environmental parameters, display methods, storage containers and handling techniques. By relating traditional practices and modern developments, the author hopes to increase awareness of East Asian paintings and encourage improvements in their preservation.

42. More Reliable Dating of Japanese Silk Mounting Textiles for Conservation Decisions: Effects of Silk Processing on Silk Surface Morphology and Aspartic Acid Racemization.

Abstract

Dating silk mounting textiles is important for understanding their condition and susceptibility to degradation. Amino acid racemization is a technique currently used for this purpose. The research presented here aimed to clarify when this technique is reliable and when it is not. Silk fibers taken from a cocoon and from Japanese mounting textiles were studied using optical microscopy to document surface roughness. Chiral capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry for amino acid racemization dating (AAR), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry for dye analysis, and FTIR for analysis of sericin and other materials adhering to the silk were also used. A change from rough fiber surfaces (greater than a hundred years old) to smooth fiber surfaces (less than a hundred years) was found. This correlated with the time of the introduction of Western degumming methods in Japan. Synthetic dyes were not found on the earlier silk fibers with rough surfaces. AAR dating measurements on rough surfaced fibers with remaining sericin correlated better with the estimated age of the silk fabrics than fibers with smooth surfaces, suggesting the technique should only be used for silk fibers with rough surfaces. Abstract

International audience; Mummified remains have long attracted interest as a potential source of ancient DNA. However, mummification is a rare process that requires an anhydrous environment to rapidly dehydrate and preserve tissue before complete decomposition occurs. We present the whole-genome sequences (3.94 X) of an approximately 1600-year-old naturally mummified sheep recovered from Chehrābād, a salt mine in northwestern Iran. Comparative analyses of published ancient sequences revealed the remarkable DNA integrity of this mummy. Hallmarks of postmortem damage, fragmentation and hydrolytic deamination are substantially reduced, likely owing to the high salinity of this taphonomic environment. Metagenomic analyses reflect the profound influence of high-salt content on decomposition; its microbial profile is predominated by halophilic archaea and bacteria, possibly contributing to the remarkable preservation of the sample. Applying population genomic analyses, we find clustering of this sheep with Southwest Asian modern breeds, suggesting ancestry continuity. Genotyping of a locus influencing the woolly phenotype showed the presence of an ancestral ‘hairy’ allele, consistent with hair fibre imaging. This, along with derived alleles associated with the fat-tail phenotype, provides genetic evidence that Sasanian-period Iranians maintained specialized sheep flocks for different uses, with the ‘hairy’, ‘fat-tailed’-genotyped sheep likely kept by the rural community of Chehrābād's miners.

Cattle were domesticated ∼10,000 years ago, but analysis of modern breeds has not elucidated their origins. Verdugo et al. performed genome-wide analysis of 67 ancient Near Eastern Bos taurus DNA samples. Several populations of ancient aurochs were progenitors of domestic cows. These genetic lineages mixed ∼4000 years ago in a region around the Indus Valley. Interestingly, mitochondrial analysis indicated that genetic material likely derived from arid-adapted Bos indicus (zebu) bulls was introduced by introgression.Science, this issue p. 173Genome-wide analysis of 67 ancient Near Eastern cattle, Bos taurus, remains reveals regional variation that has since been obscured by admixture in modern populations. Comparisons of genomes of early domestic cattle to their aurochs progenitors identify diverse origins with separate introgressions of wild stock. A later region-wide Bronze Age shift indicates rapid and widespread introgression of zebu, Bos indicus, from the Indus Valley. This process was likely stimulated at the onset of the current geological age, ~4.2 thousand years ago, by a widespread multicentury drought. In contrast to genome-wide admixture, mitochondrial DNA stasis supports that this introgression was male-driven, suggesting that selection of arid-adapted zebu bulls enhanced herd survival. This human-mediated migration of zebu-derived genetics has continued through millennia, altering tropical herding on each continent.

Abstract

How humans got their goatsLittle is known regarding the location and mode of the early domestication of animals such as goats for husbandry. To investigate the history of the goat, Dalyet al.sequenced mitochondrial and nuclear sequences from ancient specimens ranging from hundreds to thousands of years in age. Multiple wild populations contributed to the origin of modern goats during the Neolithic. Over time, one mitochondrial type spread and became dominant worldwide. However, at the whole-genome level, modern goat populations are a mix of goats from different sources and provide evidence for a multilocus process of domestication in the Near East. Furthermore, the patterns described support the idea of multiple dispersal routes out of the Fertile Crescent region by domesticated animals and their human counterparts.Science, this issue p.85

48. Leveraging the Outpatient Pharmacy to Reduce Medication Waste in Pediatric Asthma Hospitalizations.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Previous local quality improvement focused on discharging patients with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) "in-hand" decreased healthcare reutilization after hospitalization for an asthma exacerbation. However, as a result of these new processes, some patients admitted for an asthma exacerbation received more than one ICS inhaler during their admission, contributing to medication waste and potential patient confusion regarding their discharge medication regimen. We sought to decrease this waste., Methods: We conducted a quality improvement project to reduce the prescribing of multiple ICS inhalers to patients at a large academic children's hospital. Our primary outcome measure was the monthly percentage of patients admitted with an asthma exacerbation who were administered more than one ICS inhaler. A secondary outcome measure evaluated the reliability of the new process of using the hospital-based outpatient pharmacy to supply ICS "in-hand" and verify insurance coverage. After the process map review, we hypothesized a delay in the initial ICS treatment decision would allow for both a finalized discharge medication plan and a standardized process to verify outpatient insurance coverage., Results: The mean percentage of patients receiving more than one ICS inhaler decreased from our baseline of 7.4% to 0.7%. Verification of outpatient prescription insurance coverage via the outpatient pharmacy increased from 0.7% to 50%. The average inpatient cost (average wholesale price) for ICS decreased by 62% to $90.25., Conclusions: Our process change to use the outpatient pharmacy to dispense and verify insurance coverage for ICS medication was associated with a reduction in medication waste during admission for an asthma exacerbation.
