5. Risk Assessment of Hazardous Materials Transportation for Small and Tribal Communities in Nebraska

Abstract

Small communities (population < 5,000) and Native American communities in Nebraska, U.S., often lack the means to deal with highway-based crashes involving hazardous materials (HazMat). This research focused on assessing the vulnerability of small and tribal communities in Nebraska to the impacts of highway HazMat crashes. To do so, this paper estimated the expected number and type of HazMat crashes per population in each community. This study statistically analyzed reported HazMat crashes in Nebraska to determine if small and Native American communities experienced a higher crash rate per population and per HazMat vehicle miles traveled (VMT) than large communities and other small communities. Mean HazMat crash rate per population statistically significantly differed between small and large communities, while the mean crash rate comparison between the Native American and other small communities was not statistically significant. For the mean HazMat crash rate per HazMat VMT, neither comparison was statistically significant. For HazMat crashes per population, and per HazMat VMT, small communities had higher mean values than larger communities. Communities on Native American reservation land experienced a lower HazMat crash rate per population than other small communities but HazMat crashes per VMT in Native American communities were higher than in other small communities. Overall, this research provided a widely applicable risk assessment method not only for communities in Nebraska but also across the U.S. without appreciable loss of generality.

9. Evaluation of Distraction Osteogenesis by Ilizarov Ring Fixator for Hypertrophic Nonunion of Tibia with Shortening and Deformity

Abstract

Background: Hypertrophic nonunion often develops due to improper fracture immobilization or failed internal fixation. Gross mobility at the fracture site interferes with the normal healing process with the formation of fibrocartilage, which fails to mature into solid callus. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to evaluate distraction osteogenesis by ilizarov ring fixator for hypertrophic nonunion of tibia with deformity and shortening. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study conducted at National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), Dhaka, Bangladesh in the period from June 2011 to December 2012. Study population were all the patients with hypertrophic nonunion of tibia with shortening and deformity, attending out-patient department in NITOR. A total of 10 patients were included for evaluation from which 8 patients were selected using purposive sampling method. Surgery was with detailed preoperative x-ray analysis and measurement of magnitude of deformity and LLD. Other necessary investigations were done if clinically indicated and to prepare the patient for anesthesia. Statistical analysis of the results was obtained by using window-based computer software devised with Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS-22). Results: The mean age of patients was 32.62 years and the lowest and the highest ages were 14and 55 years respectively. Type of deformity out of 08 patients, 07 patients had only angulation deformity and 01 had angulation translation deformity. Distribution of patients with the Plane of deformity reflects that 2 patients had sagittal plane and 6 had oblique plane. Conclusion: As the outcome evaluation was done 5-11 months after operation, changes in outcome beyond 3-11 months like Knee, ankle arthritis and symptom status, recurrence of deformity, collapse of lengthen segment could not be ascertained.

12. Halotolerant biofilm-producing rhizobacteria mitigate seawater-induced salt stress and promote growth of tomato

Abstract

Biofilm-producing rhizobacteria (BPR) enhance productivity and mitigate abiotic stresses in plants. This study showed that 21 out of 65 halotolerant rhizobacteria could build biofilms. The components of the biofilm matrices i.e., extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are proteins, curli, nanocelloluse, nucleic acids, lipids, and peptidoglycans. Various functional groups including carbonyl, carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl, and phosphate were identified. Positions of these groups were shifted by application of 5% NaCl, suggesting Na+ biosorption. By sequencing, Glutamicibacter arilaitensis (ESK1, ESM4 and ESM7), G. nicotianae (ESK19, ESM8 and ESM16), Enterobacter ludwigii (ESK15, ESK17, ESM2 and ESM17), E. cloacae (ESM5 and ESM12), Exiguobacterium acetylicum (ESM24 and ESM25), Staphylococcus saprophyticus ESK6, Leclercia adecarboxylata ESK12, Pseudomonas poae ESK16, Bacillus subtilis ESM14, and P. putida ESM17 were identified. These rhizobacteria exhibited numerous plant growth-promoting (PGP) activities including producing IAA, ACC deaminase, and siderophores, and solubilizing phosphate. Under non-stress, bacterized plants increased biomass accumulation (8–23.2% roots and 23–49.4% shoots), while under seawater-induced salt stress only ESK12, ESM4, ESM12, and ESM14 enhanced biomass production (5.8–52.9% roots and 8.8–33.4% shoots). Bacterized plants induced antioxidant defense system (19.5–142% catalase and 12.3–24.2% DPPH radical scavenging activity), retained a greater relative water content (17–124%), showed lesser membrane injuries (19.9–26.5%), and a reduced Na+ (6–24% in roots) and increased K+/Na+ ratio (78.8 and 103% in roots by ESK12 and ESM24, respectively) than the non-bacterized plants in saline conditions. Thus, native halotolerant BPR can be utilized as ameliorators of salt stress.

13. Improved Traffic Analysis Methodology for Lane Closure on Two-Lane Highway Work Zone

Abstract

Lane closures on two-lane highways allow a single lane to be used for both directions of traffic alternatively and this negatively impact operational performance. The sixth edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM-6) modeled this situation using microsimulation and field data. However, there are no guidelines on how the HCM-6 work can be replicated in other areas. Furthermore, there is no guideline for modeling a signal control plan that can optimize operation for various work zone scenarios. This dissertation proposes a comprehensive methodology that can model work zones involving one lane closures on two-lane highways. It includes an automatic calibration methodology focused on identifying microsimulation parameters that produce distribution of performance measures statistically similar to empirical observations. The efficacy of the model was tested using empirical data in Nebraska. The proposed model was also validated using empirical data. This dissertation develops the Nebraska University signal timing method (NU_STM) applicable for different work zone scenarios. Furthermore, efficacy of existing methods such as HCM-6 and Webster are analyzed and compared with NU_STM. It is found that NU_STM reduces delays by up to 78%, and decreases its variability up to 74%, and results in better operations than other signal timing methods examined. Lastly, the impact of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on work zones is modeled and evaluated using a new methodology. In general, it is found that 100% market penetration of CAV can reduce delay by 84% and shorten queue length by 76%. CAV also reduces the variability of these performance measures. This dissertation provides a new and comprehensive model for lane closure on two-lane work zones. It specifically addresses the shortcomings of existing models and is designed so future transportation technologies, such as CAV, can be readily incorporated. 17. Calibration and Validation of a Microsimulation Model of Lane Closures on a Two-Lane Highway Work Zone

Abstract

Lane closure on a two-lane work zone can negatively affect operational performance. Although a microsimulation model is often used to quantify and predict these negative impacts, it requires proper calibration to produce meaningful results. The sixth edition of the Highway Capacity Manual(HCM-6) proposed a microsimulation model using limited empirical data from King County, Washington. Based on the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first to examine the applicability of the HCM-6 two-lane work zone model in a different geographical area. A preliminary application of the HCM-6 model to two test sites in Nebraska found that the HCM-6 estimation of the mean headways and travel times were statistically different from observed data at the 5% significance level. Therefore, this paper proposed an automatic microsimulation calibration methodology for identifying parameters that can match the distribution or the mean value of observed traffic data. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper to show that a two-lane work zone microsimulation model calibrated using the empirical distributions of traffic measures can replicate the corresponding distributions at the 5% significance level. However, if the model was calibrated using the mean value of traffic measures, it could not replicate empirical distributions. This model was also validated using field data not used for calibration. The methodology proposed in this paper will benefit those who design and operate work zones because traffic agencies are interested in the variety of traffic conditions, not just the average. This paper concludes with a discussion on model transferability.
