Relationship‐oriented human resource management (HRM) contributes to organizational functioning by promoting employee relationships, coordination, and cooperation. We propose unit‐level positive affective climate as a motivational mechanism through which relationship‐oriented HR systems can positively influence unit service quality and relationships with beneficiaries, and prevent individual emotional exhaustion. Moreover, we propose collective occupational calling serves as an alternative motivational source that can substitute for the positive effects of positive affective climate. In analyzing a sample composed of 742 nurses from 48 nursing units of two hospitals in China with data collection at three time points before and after the COVID‐19 outbreak, our results supported the substituting effects of unit‐level collective occupational calling on positive affective climate stemmed from relationship‐oriented HR systems. Our study connects strategic HRM and motivation research by shedding light on an affective mechanism from relationship‐oriented HR systems and the contingencies involving employees' various sources of motivation, such as occupational calling. Background: The handover process is a vital part of patient safety continuity, particularly conducted between nurses at the end of shifts. Nurses often face challenges in handover due to a lack of self-efficacy and inadequate communication skills. The clinical supervision model, by providing emotional, educational, and organizational support, aids in skill acquisition and instills confidence. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the clinical supervision model on nurses' self-efficacy and communication skills in the handover process within medical and surgical wards. Method: This experimental two-group (pre-and post-test) study was conducted in 2024 at selected hospital affiliated with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. Convenience sampling was used, and participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. Data were collected using the ISBAR communication checklist, communication clarity, the Sherer General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for handover self-efficacy, and the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale (MCSS). The clinical supervision model and routine supervision were implemented in six sessions for the intervention and control groups, respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16, employing independent t-tests, covariance analysis, paired t-tests, chi-square tests, and repeated measures ANOVA with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: No significant differences were observed between the intervention and control groups in terms of baseline characteristics. Inter-group analysis indicated that there were no significant differences in the scores of self-efficacy, ISBAR, and communication clarity between the control and intervention groups before the intervention (P > 0.05). According to the intra-group analysis, the ISBAR and communication clarity scores in the intervention group significantly increased over time (p < 0.001), whereas no such increase was observed in the control group. The intervention group showed a significant increase in general self-efficacy (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Although both groups showed a significant improvement in handover self-efficacy, the mean scores of the intervention group were higher than those of the control group (p < 0.001). The mean score of the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale in the intervention group was 128.98, indicating the high effectiveness of implementing the clinical supervision model. Conclusion: The findings indicated that the use of the clinical supervision model improves self-efficacy and communication skills in the handover process of nurses in medical and surgical wards. Introduction: Emergencies are increasingly prevalent, necessitating specialized management to address significant social disruption. Effective management of health emergencies requires resilience from governments and health institutions, as these emergencies are becoming more common and have wide-ranging consequences on health, society, and the economy. Due to the interconnected nature of our global society, events in one location can have international or even global impacts, as demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: This study aims to assess disaster management preparedness among nurses and physicians during pandemics. Methods: This study used an online survey conducted in late 2022 to collect primary data through a purposive sampling method, involving both government and private hospitals in Palestine. The participants included 512 nurses and 241 physicians from various hospital units. Results: The findings indicate varying levels of knowledge among participants, with a significant portion (67%) reporting no prior experience with real disaster situations. Additionally, 63% lacked prior disaster response experience. Regarding training courses, 17.8% of nurses and physicians prioritized emergency preparedness, trauma mass casualty response, and triage disaster management systems. Despite some understanding of disaster management, the study emphasizes the importance of hospital managers implementing national standards, engaging healthcare professionals in continuous education, and addressing gaps in perceived competence. Conclusion: While participants demonstrated some knowledge of disaster management, the study suggests the importance of hospital managers adopting national standards, engaging healthcare professionals in continuous learning activities, and addressing perceived competence gaps. Background: An Addiction Medicine Unit (AMU) represents a promising approach to enhancing hospital care for individuals who use substances, but there is limited research to understand patients' perspectives on AMUs. Therefore, the study objectives involved exploring patients' experiences with the AMU. Methods: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 patients to gather their perspectives about the AMU. The AMU offers specialized inpatient addiction support, integrating medical and psychosocial interventions while facilitating connections to community supports to stabilize patients and manage addiction-related issues using a harm reduction philosophy. Results: Factors identified by patients that lead to positive experiences with the AMU included: efficient access to high-quality acute medical care, specialized addiction care, and additional support for non-medical needs. Patients emphasized the benefits of having peer support workers on staff, the overall positive interactions with staff, and how different these experiences were from their hospital admissions outside of the AMU. Factors identified by patients that should be considered in an AMU included: the ease of access to substances, negative interactions with other patients, and self-stigma/internalized discrimination. Also, the patient perspective reflected varied views on harm reduction. Patients' perception of the impact of an AMU overall reflected that the AMU is an effective way to deliver comprehensive treatment, to address the needs of PWUS, both medical and substance-use-related issues. They identified that the unit's intentional harm reduction philosophy facilitated access to care and positive patient-staff interactions, emphasizing the unit's progress in reducing fear and judgment and rebuilding trust in the healthcare system. Conclusion: The introduction of a new AMU in a Northern urban acute care hospital in Ontario has yielded positive patient experiences. Background: Anorexia nervosa is a serious and potentially lethal psychiatric disorder. Furthermore, there is significant evidence that some individuals develop a very long-standing form of the illness that requires a variety of different treatment interventions over time. Objective: The primary goal of this paper was to provide a review of treatment strategies for severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SE-AN) with the particular focus on treatments involving hospital care. Additionally, we wish to highlight a contemporary approach to such care and provide qualitative reactions to this model from both staff and patients. Methods: A selective and strategic review of the treatment literature for SE-AN was conducted for the current paper. Emphasis was placed on clinical or scientific papers related to hospital-based care. Additionally, staff who work on a specific inpatient eating disorder unit with a substantial treatment program for SE-AN, along with a number of SE-AN patients were surveyed regarding their experiences working on, or receiving treatment on the unit. Importantly, the staff of this unit created a specific treatment protocol for individuals receiving hospital care. The results of the highlight both advantages and challenges of a hospital-based protocol oriented toward emphasizing quality of life, medical stability, and a health-promoting meal plan. Discussion: While there is general inconsistency with the type of treatment that is best suited to individuals with SE-AN, this is particularly true for higher levels of care that rely on inpatient hospital units or residential treatment settings. This is a highly significant clinical topic in need of further clinical and scientific examination. Plain English summary: Anorexia nervosa is a serious illness which often persists for decades. Treatments for persistent anorexia nervosa are not well defined and there is considerable debate in the field about appropriate types of treatment strategies for these individuals. Background: Many older people are now living with co‐occurring physical and mental health disorders, but these often managed separately. The aim of this systematic review was to explore integrated physical‐mental health care services available internationally for older people living with mental health diagnoses, and whether these result in improved health outcomes. Methods: Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Scopus were searched with a predefined search strategy (PROSPERO: CRD42022383824), generating 6210 articles. Studies were included where an integrated physical‐mental health care service model was utilised in a population of older people (aged >60 years) with a mental health diagnosis (including dementia or cognitive impairment) and at least one concomitant physical health condition requiring physical health care input. All studies were assessed for risk of bias (ROB 2.0, ROBINS‐I) and results were synthesised narratively. Results: Nine studies were included across inpatient (n = 6, 1262 patients) and community (n = 3, 466 patients) settings. Studies were rated as low‐moderate risk of bias. These covered joint physical‐mental health wards, liaison services, embedded physicians in mental health wards, and joint multidisciplinary teams. Services with greater integration (e.g., joint wards) had more benefits for patients and carers. There were few benefits to traditional outcomes (e.g., hospital admissions, mortality), but greater care quality, carer satisfaction, and improved mood and engagement were demonstrated. Conclusions: Multidisciplinary integrated care resulted in improvement of a range of health outcomes for older people with combined physical and mental health needs. Larger and more robust studies are needed to explore the development of these service models further, with cost‐effectiveness analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A theoretical paper which considers the previous multiple attempts by nursing to engage with and usefully apply the theories of psychoanalysis to varying aspects of the nursing role. References to psychoanalysis within the nursing literature of the last century are reviewed and the legitimacy of the use of psychoanalytic theory 'outside the clinic' explored with reference to general hospital nursing in the UK's National Health Service. Themes explored include unconscious motivation behind nursing as a career choice, with associated risks of stress and burnout when the unconscious drive to heal is thwarted. Psychoanalytic consideration of nurse-patient relationships provides insight into the patient experience on hospital wards, whilst exploration of other aspects of the nursing role was found to be limited. From a wider perspective, psychoanalysis offers nursing an insight into societal changes impacting the profession. The systems and processes of the healthcare institution have also been explored, particularly in relation to containment of anxiety, though limited practical impact has resulted from the psychoanalytic insight encountered in the literature. The limited engagement between psychoanalysis and general nursing is considered from both a psychoanalytic and nursing perspective; ongoing potentiality for enriching dialogue between the disciplines is established and potential barriers explored. Purpose: This aim of this study was to assess the possible association between diurnal oscillations and biochemical markers associated with calcium homeostasis. This included the markers parathyroid hormone (PTH), total calcium, total alkaline phosphatase, phosphate, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D). By examining the influence of circadian rhythms on these parameters, the study aimed to deepen the understanding of calcium metabolism dynamics and its clinical implications. Patients and methods: Blood samples from 24 Caucasian male volunteers aged 20 to 40 (mean age 26) with normal pulse, blood pressure, and BMI were analyzed for biochemical markers related to calcium homeostasis. Data was obtained from the Bispebjerg study of diurnal variations. Blood samples were collected every three hours over a 24-hour period. Patients were fasting from 22:00 to 09:00. The participants spent 24 h in the hospital ward, receiving regular meals and engaging in low-intensity activities. They experienced 15 h of daylight and 9 h of complete darkness during sleep. Diurnal oscillations were analyzed using cosinor analysis with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Total calcium, phosphate, and PTH exhibited significant diurnal variations. Total calcium and PTH were inversely synchronized while PTH and phosphate oscillated in synchronization. The three parameters showed relatively large amplitude/reference range ratios from 25.4% to 41.5%. Conclusion: This study found notable fluctuations in total calcium, phosphate, and PTH levels over a 24-hour cycle, while 25-OH-D and total alkaline phosphatase remained consistent. Aim: This qualitative study aimed to explore nurses' perspectives regarding the challenges of providing perinatal/neonatal end-of-life care in a regional hospital. Methods: This exploratory qualitative study was conducted with 20 nurses working in Turkey. Study data were collected through in-depth and semi-structured individual interviews. The interviews were then submitted to thematic analysis. Results: Three themes emerged from analyses of the interviews: (1) inadequate support for delivery of palliative care, (2) perceptions of family readiness, and (3) providing information/education to the family. The most prominent difficulties experienced by nurses were inadequacy of unit and equipment and lack of trained personnel. Another important issue that stood out was families' not accepting the end-of-life care decision for the fetus or the neonate and their having unrealistic expectations. Conclusion: Study results have provided important considerations for regional isolated neonatal and perinatal units, and they will be used to inform clinical practice improvements, staff education support, policies/procedures, family support, and further research relating to end-of-life care provision for the most vulnerable babies and their families. Background: The main purposes of the nursing profession are to protect and improve health and to prevent and heal diseases. It is crucial to investigate the factors that can influence nurses' ability to enhance their performance in their professional lives and conduct the nursing care process more qualitatively and effectively. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between emotional intelligence and compassionate communication in nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 140 nurses working in various units of the public hospital in Kilis, Turkey. Data were collected through a demographic information form, Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Compassionate Communication Scale. Results: It was determined that nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication were above average. A significant association was found between nurses' emotional intelligence and compassionate communication (F = 16.08, P <.001) and emotional intelligence explains 10% of the variance in compassionate communication (R = 0.323, R 2 = 0.104). Conclusions: Emotional intelligence and compassionate communication should be taken into consideration so that nurses can recognize and understand patients' emotions, alleviate their hurt, and deliver delicate, kind, and compassionate care. Background: Workplace violence persists in health care with nurses reporting physical and verbal abuse from aggressive patients causing emotional stress and lost workdays. The Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression–Inpatient Version (DASA-IV) was developed to measure risk for aggression in patients with behavioral health conditions in psychiatric and emergency department settings. The DASA-IV has not been validated with adult patients admitted to medical-surgical units. Objective: To determine whether DASA-IV scores are predictive of aggressive events in adults hospitalized on medical-surgical units. Methods: This multisite study used a case-control design. DASA-IV scores and acts of aggression were extracted from the medical record retrospectively to validate the appraisal's predictability. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) were used to correlate DASA-IV scores with aggressive events. Results: DASA-IV assessments (N=156 999; mean [SD] 10.1 [10.7]/patient; range 1-220) were collected from 13 611 patients. Patients were primarily White (86.1%) and female (51.7%). Aggression (n = 509 patients; 3.7%) was significantly associated with older age, male sex, smoking, illicit drug use, and high DASA-IV scores. AUC of the ROC analysis for the DASA-IV showed a 97% probability (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.964-0.977) that an aggressive patient would have a higher score on the DASA-IV than a nonaggressive patient. Binary logistic regression predicted that for every point increase in the DASA-IV, there was a 3.51 (95% CI 3.38-3.63) times increased risk for aggression (B = 1.255, SE = 0.18, Wald = 4766.6, P <.001). Conclusions: This study is the first to validate use of the DASA-IV in medical-surgical populations, demonstrating predictive ability for aggressive incidents. • Higher intake of green and white vegetables/fruits is linked to reduced breast cancer (BrCa) risk. • The role of diet in reducing BrCa is emphasized, highlighting the importance of the color of vegetables/fruits. • Our study provides information supporting dietary guidelines to lower BrCa risk. Breast cancer (BrCa) remains a significant health concern globally, influenced by both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors. Limited studies have explored the role of color-specific vegetables and fruits, which are rich in specific phytonutrients, on BrCa risk. We hypothesized that consuming color-specific vegetables and fruits may decrease BrCa risk in Korean women. This case-control study examined the relationship between the intake of different-colored vegetables and fruits and the risk of BrCa, considering menopausal, hormone receptor status, tumor subtypes. We matched 395 patients and 395 controls by age and recruited from the National Cancer Center in Korea. Dietary data was collected via food frequency questionnaire, categorizing by colors: green, orange/yellow, red/purple, and white. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by logistic regression models, with subgroup analyses for menopausal, hormone receptor status, and tumor subtypes. Results shown BrCa patients consumed less vegetables and fruits than control group. Higher consumption of green, other orange/yellow, and white vegetables and fruits was negatively associated with BrCa risk [OR (95% CIs) of Q4 vs Q1 = 0.59 (0.36-0.94); 0.55 (0.33-0.89); and 0.60 (0.37-0.96), respectively]. Particularly, a greater intake of dark green leafy vegetables was significantly associated with reduced BrCa risk (OR of Q4 vs Q1 = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.34-0.89). Subgroup analysis consistently demonstrated inverse associations between higher intake of green-color vegetables and fruits and BrCa risk. Our findings suggest that a diet rich in green and white-color vegetables and fruits may lower BrCa risk among Korean women. Simple Summary: This pilot study aims to identify the physical, mental, social, psychological, and health needs encountered by cancer survivors in order to propose and facilitate appropriate and tailored responses. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first multidimensional studies investigating this topic in Italy. Data show that the quality of life of cancer survivors is affected by cancer and its treatment, reporting more frailties than the general population, especially those over 65 years old. These findings could help develop multidisciplinary planning of survivorship care for the transition of patients from oncological management to primary healthcare. Background: Understanding the specific needs of cancer survivors is essential for healthcare policy. In Italy, dedicated studies are lacking, so we aimed to investigate the physical, mental, social, and health difficulties encountered by these patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on breast or colorectal cancer survivors (people 5+ years free from it and its treatments) using an ad hoc survey including validated questionnaires (Grauer–Palombi, SF-36, PREDIMED). Participants were recruited within the Oncology Unit of the "Policlinico Tor Vergata", Italy. Results: A total of 62 patients (80.6% females; years range: 37–87) agreed to be interviewed. A profile of cancer survivors was drafted: an overaged person with multiple co-morbidities, not well-nourished, adhering to the Mediterranean diet, reporting critical conditions as for physical and functional status. The mean number of co-morbidities was 3.6 ± 2.4 SD, with a statistically significant difference between age groups (under and over 65). Compared to the general population, the sample showed more frailties, especially when >65. The risk of having multimorbidity (four or more co-morbidities) significantly increased in those over 65 (OR: 4.72; CI: 1.43–15.59). Conclusion: There is an urgent need for survivorship care planning for the patient-centered continuum of care. The article discusses a quality improvement (QI) project of a community hospital in Pennsylvania aimed at increasing knowledge and awareness of shared governance, initiate a unit-based council, and improve engagement among nurses within an identified unit as the hospital seeks its first Pathway to Excellence designation. Objectives: Current policies for older patients do not adequately address the barriers to effective implementation of optimal care models in New Zealand, partly due to differences in patient definitions and the in-patient pathway they should follow through hospital. This research aims to: (a) synthesise a definition of a complex older patient; (b) identify and explore primary and secondary health measures; and (c) identify the primary components of a care model suitable for a tertiary hospital in the midland region of the North Island of New Zealand. Method: This mixed-methods study utilised a convergence model, in which qualitative and quantitative data were investigated separately and then combined for interpretation. Semi-structured interviews (n=11) were analysed using a general inductive method of enquiry to develop key codes, categories and themes. Univariate data analysis was employed using six years of routinely collected data of patients admitted to the emergency department and inpatient units (n=261,773) of the tertiary hospital. Results: A definition of a complex older patient was determined that incorporates chronic conditions, comorbidities and iatrogenic complications, functional decline, activities of daily living, case fatality, mortality, hospital length of stay, hospital costs, discharge destination, hospital readmission and emergency department revisit and age – not necessarily over 65 years old. Well-performing geriatric care models were found to include patient-centred care, frequent medical review, early rehabilitation, early discharge planning, a prepared environment and multidisciplinary teams. Conclusions: The findings of this New Zealand study increase understanding of acute geriatric care for complex older patients by filling a gap in policies and strategies, identifying potential components of an optimal care model and defining a complex geriatric patient. Implications for Public Health: The findings of this study present actionable opportunities for clinicians, managers, academics and policymakers to better understand a complex older patient in New Zealand, with significant relevance also for international geriatric care and to establish an effective acute geriatric care model that leads to beneficial health outcomes and provides safeguard mechanisms. The aging population, often burdened with multimorbidity and polypharmacy complexities, requires comprehensive care during healthcare transitions. These transitions contribute to increased prescriptions, exacerbating polypharmacy and frailty in older individuals. Medication reconciliation, a preventive strategy, optimizes medication lists through systematic analysis, particularly benefiting older patients grappling with polypharmacy. This practice holds substantial potential in enhancing patient safety during care transitions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the discrepancies detected during the practice of medication reconciliation at the admission, discharge, or transfer of older individuals in a ward in Brazil. This is a single-cohort study of patients admitted to an older adult care ward in Brazil, monitored from September 2021 to April 2022. Older individuals hospitalized in the ward, exhibiting the characteristic clinical profile of multimorbidity and polypharmacy, were observed to identify discrepancies in the practice of medication reconciliation conducted as part of pharmaceutical care services. Medication reconciliation was carried out upon admission, discharge from the ward for older adult care, or transfer to other healthcare units. Sixty older individuals were monitored during the study period in the ward. The use of polypharmacy at home was evident in more than 70% of patients, and multimorbidity was present in over 90% of patients. On average, 8.6 discrepancies were identified per patient (± 4.7). Upon admission to the older adult care ward, 501 discrepancies were identified and assessed, decreasing to 200 at the time of hospital discharge or transfer to other units. In total, 48 medication errors were identified in the evaluated prescriptions and ongoing pharmacotherapy. The use of polypharmacy proved to be a contributing factor that increased the identification of discrepancies in medication reconciliation (p < 0.001). Analyzing medication reconciliation discrepancies uncovers intentional and unintentional aspects in prescriptions, with medication quantity, especially in polypharmacy, linked to potential harm. Perinatal mental and anxiety disorders (PMADs) contribute to adverse health outcomes, though they are underrecognized and undertreated. Inpatient obstetric settings represent a unique opportunity for behavioral health engagement, including screening, brief treatment, and referrals for outpatient care. The proactive consultation-liaison (CL) model has proven effective in general hospital settings but is not well-studied in obstetric settings. This article describes the implementation and evaluation of a proactive CL model in an inpatient obstetric unit within a tertiary medical center. We implemented a multidisciplinary, proactive CL model in an inpatient obstetric unit with the purpose of identifying patients at risk for or experiencing PMADs and providing intervention and/or referral to treatment. Systematic screening of 7322 admitted patients was performed over a 17-month period to identify eligible patients for behavioral health consultation. Consultation data was retrospectively extracted from the electronic medical record. Key implementation outcomes were assessed using a RE-AIM measures (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework. 1589 initial consults were conducted by the multidisciplinary team, yielding a consult rate of 21.7 %. The majority of consults (94 %) were completed by a social worker or psychologist, with most patients identified for consultation at multidisciplinary rounds (60.7 %). The most common indications for consultation with a psychiatrist included medication management, history of bipolar disorder, and history of anxiety. All invited staff and providers participated in the model. Alternative funding sources agreed to cover the salaries of the multidisciplinary team following conclusion of pilot grant funding. A proactive CL model implemented in an inpatient obstetric unit led to a higher consult rate (21.7 %) than is observed with traditional CL services. Background: The predictive ability of the early determination of sex steroids and the total testosterone:estradiol ratio for the risk of severe coronavirus disease 2019 or the potential existence of a biological gradient in this relationship has not been evaluated. Objectives: To assess the relationship of sex steroid levels and the total testosterone:estradiol ratio with the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in men, defined as the need for intensive care unit admission or death, and the predictive ability of each biomarker. Materials and methods: This was a prospective observational study. We included all consecutive adult men with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections in a single center admitted to a general hospital ward or to the intensive care unit. Sex steroids were evaluated at the centralized laboratory of our hospital. Results: We recruited 98 patients, 54 (55.1%) of whom developed severe coronavirus disease in 2019. Compared to patients with nonsevere coronavirus disease 2019, patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 had significantly lower serum levels of total testosterone (111 ± 89 vs. 191 ± 143 ng/dL; p < 0.001), dehydroepiandrosterone (1.69 ± 1.26 vs. 2.96 ± 2.64 ng/mL; p < 0.001), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (91.72 ± 76.20 vs. 134.28 ± 98.261 μg/dL; p = 0.009), significantly higher levels of estradiol (64.61 ± 59.35 vs. 33.78 ± 13.78 pg/mL; p = 0.001), and significantly lower total testosterone:estradiol ratio (0.28 ± 0.31 vs. 0.70 ± 0.75; p < 0.001). The lower the serum level of androgen and the lower the total testosterone:estradiol ratio values, the higher the likelihood of developing severe coronavirus disease 2019, with the linear trend in the adjusted analyses being statistically significant for all parameters except for androstenedione (p = 0.064). In the receiver operating characteristic analysis, better predictive performance was shown by the total testosterone:estradiol ratio, with an area under the curve of 0.77 (95% confidence interval 0.68–0.87; p < 0.001). Discussion and conclusion: Our results suggest that men with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, decreased androgen levels and increased estradiol levels have a higher likelihood of developing an unfavorable outcome. Background: Infection is a common cause of mortality within intensive care units (ICUs). Antibiotic resistance patterns and culture data are used to create antibiograms. Knowledge of antibiograms facilitates guiding empiric therapies and reduces mortality. Most major hospitals utilize data collection to create hospital-wide antibiograms. Previous studies have shown significant differences in susceptibility patterns between hospital wards and ICUs. We hypothesize that institutional or combined ICU antibiograms are inadequate to account for differences in susceptibility for patients in individual ICUs. Methods: Culture and susceptibility data were reviewed over a 1-year period for 13 bacteria in the following ICUs: Surgical/Trauma, Medical, Neuroscience, Burn, and Emergency department. Antibiotic management decisions are made by individual teams. Results: Nine species had sufficient data for inclusion into an All-ICU antibiogram. E coli and S aureus were the most common isolates. Seven species had significant differences in susceptibility patterns between ICUs. E cloacae showed higher rates of resistance to multiple antibiotics in the STICU than other ICUs. P aeruginosa susceptibility rates in the NSICU and BICU were 88% and 92%, respectively, compared to 60% and 55% in the STICU and MICU. Cephalosporins and Aztreonam had reduced efficacy against E coli in the NSICU, however remain effective in other ICUs. Conclusions: The results of this study show that different ICUs do have variability in antibiotic susceptibility patterns within a single hospital. While this only represents a single institution, it shows that the use of hospital-wide antibiograms is inadequate for creating empiric antibiotic protocols within individual ICUs. Drawing from transformational leadership (TFL) theory and research on contextual leadership, we examined a conditional process model of leadership in nursing teams to predict patient loyalty. Using TFL's individualized consideration dimension as a salient facet of the construct in care services, we first posited that nurses' team affective commitment would partially mediate the impact of nurse leadership. We further conceptualized nurse–physician collaboration, organizational formalization and task feedback as discrete contexts that may curb the influence of head nurses' individualized consideration. In a three‐wave, multisource and multilevel study, we surveyed 654 nurses and 1770 patients from 91 hospital units. We found that team‐level head nurses' individualized consideration positively and partially related to patient loyalty through nurses' team commitment and that higher levels of nurse–physician collaboration, organizational formalization and task feedback were associated with reduced influence of individualized consideration on team commitment and patient loyalty. Background: Day hospitals in child and adolescent mental health services are held to be helpful entities in the psychiatric care of young people. However, limited research has been done to look into how day hospitals and similar settings affect referrals, inpatient stays and in which cohort of patients do they show the most impact. This study's primary aims were to examine the impact of a new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) day hospital on referrals and admissions to the associated CAMHS in‐patient unit. A secondary aim of this study was to examine the demographics and clinical outcomes of the young people attending the day hospital. Methods: Information was gathered using retrospective reviews of clinical files and databases. Results: There was a reduction in admissions and in the total bed days from the study area following the opening of the day hospital. There was an improvement in clinical outcomes for young people attending the day hospital. Conclusion: Day hospital in child and adolescent mental health services can prove to be a useful modality to provide support to young people with a moderate to severe mental illness leading to reduced inpatient admissions and improving lengths of inpatient stay. Background: Utilization of video calls on hospital wards to facilitate involvement of and communication with family members is still limited. A deeper understanding of the needs and expectations of family members regarding video calls on hospital wards is necessary, to identify potential barriers and facilitate video calls in practice. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the views, expectations and needs of a patient's family members regarding the use of video calls between family members, patients and healthcare professionals, during the patient's hospital admission. Methods: A qualitative study was carried out. Semi‐structured interviews with family members of patients admitted to two hospitals were conducted between February and May 2022. Family members of patients admitted to the surgical, internal medicine and gynaecological wards were recruited. Results: Twelve family members of patients participated. Family members stated that they perceive video calls as a supplemental option and prefer live visits during hospital admission. They expected video calls to initiate additional moments of contact with healthcare professionals, e.g. to join in medical rounds. When deploying video calls, family members mentioned that adequate instruction and technical support by nurses should be available. Conclusion: Family members considered video calls valuable when visiting is not possible or to participate in medical rounds or other contacts with healthcare professionals outside of visiting hours. Implications: Family members need to be supported in options and use of video calls on hospital wards. Additional knowledge about actual participation in care through video calls is needed as well as the effect on patient, family and healthcare professional outcomes. Background: Psychological distress can cause burnout, which affects mental and physical well‐being. It is important to identify factors associated with psychological distress and physical discomfort and how nurses deal with these problems. Aim: The aim was to investigate distress, burnout and coping among community nurses (CN) and hospital nurses (HN). Approach and Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 409 nurses completed three questionnaires: Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and Ways of Coping (WOC). Findings: Participants younger than 40 demonstrated significantly more distress and burnout than those older than 40 years. Participants who had moderate and high distress on the PSS were significantly more at risk for experiencing personal, work‐related and patient‐related burnout. A significant positive correlation was found between distress and behavioural escape‐avoidance, cognitive escape‐avoidance and distancing. Significant positive correlations were also seen between all the subscales of the CBI and behavioural escape‐avoidance, cognitive escape‐avoidance and distancing. Positive significant correlation was also obtained between staff resources and distress and personal‐related and work‐related burnout. Negative correlation was demonstrated between staff resources and patient‐related burnout. Participants with longer work experience were less likely to report moderate or high distress, and those who scored higher on personal burnout and behavioural escape‐avoidance were more likely to have moderate or high distress. Conclusion: The results of this study call for increased attention to the younger generation in the nursing profession. The results also validate the need to investigate further the correlation between distress, burnout and coping and how these issues might influence each other among nurses working in the community and hospitals. Findings should be taken with precaution, they do not describe in detail what underlying factors contribute to distress and discomfort found in this study, they do, however, indicate certain coping strategies nurses use to deal with distress and burnout. Aims and Objectives: To (i) determine the prevalence of delirium and identify delirium subtypes in surgical and non‐surgical patients aged ≥65 years, (ii) determine whether certain precipitating factors affect the prevalence of delirium and (iii) review patients' medical records for description of delirium symptoms and the presence of International Classification of Diseases (ICD‐10) coding for delirium in discharge summaries. Methodological Design and Justifications: Despite being a robust predictor of morbidity and mortality in older adults, delirium might be inadequately recognised and under‐reported in patients' medical records and discharge summaries. A point prevalence study (24‐h) of patients ≥65 years from surgical and non‐surgical wards was therefore conducted in a tertiary university hospital. Ethical Issues and Approval: The study was approved by the Data Protection Officer at the university hospital (2018/3454). Research Methods, Instruments and/or Interventions: Patients were assessed for delirium with 4AT and delirium subtypes with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Information about room transfers, need and use of sensory aids and medical equipment was collected onsite. Patients' medical records were reviewed for description of delirium symptoms and of ICD‐10 codes. Results: Overall, 123 patients were screened (52% female). Delirium was identified in 27% of them. Prevalence was associated with advanced age (≥85 years). The uncharacterised delirium subtype was most common (36%), followed by hypoactive (30%), hyperactive (24%) and mixed (9%). There were significant associations between positive screening tests and the need and use of sensory aids. Delirium symptoms were described in 58% of the patients who tested positive for delirium and the ICD‐10 code for delirium was registered in 12% of these patients' discharge summaries. Conclusions: The high prevalence of delirium and limited use of discharge codes highlight the need to improve the identification of delirium in hospital settings and at discharge. Introduction: It remains unclear why 17% of patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treated in Danish hospitals are readmitted within 30 days. Hospital discharge is multifaceted. However, the preparation process and nurses' efforts may be essential in ensuring a successful discharge. Aim: To explore the process of preparing discharge for patients with COPD in a hospital setting. Method: Using constructivist grounded theory, we observed 11 nurses' work at two pulmonary medical wards using participant observation. Data collection and analysis were conducted using a constant comparative process encompassing three phases: initial, focused and theoretical. Results: We identified important perspectives influencing nurses when patients with COPD are discharged from two pulmonary medical wards. We generated a substantial theory of how nurses integrate various perspectives into their handling of hospital discharge. The theory contains three discharge approaches: co‐creating, hesitating and socialising. The co‐creating approach focuses on patient and relative involvement and systematic task solution, embedded in a biopsychosocial process, aiming to achieve a safe and sustainable discharge. In contrast, the hesitating approach focuses on discharging patients in line with system requirements and colleagues' expectations. Finally, the socialising approach focuses on creating a pleasant discharge experience for patients and colleagues alike. Conclusion: This study illuminates three distinct approaches adopted by nurses when discharging a patient with COPD. The co‐creating process encompasses patient involvement and systematic task resolution, incorporating a biopsychosocial process. In contrast, the other approaches are more limited in scope: the hesitating approach aims for harmony and collegial consensus, while the socialising approach focuses on ensuring a pleasant discharge experience for everyone. BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is frequent in patients with spinal-cord injury (SCI). However, SDB is frequently underdiagnosed due to limited access to diagnostic testing and knowledge about the condition. Moreover, SDB heterogeneity (sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea and nocturnal alveolar hypoventilation) implies complex evaluation of both nocturnal respiratory effort and hypercapnia. The aim of this study was to compare different screening strategies for an SDB diagnosis in patients with SCI. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of data from subjects with SCI followed up in a tertiary-care rehabilitation center with a specialized sleep unit. Subjective (questionnaires) and objective data (polysomnography [PSG]), ... extracted from the PSG, morning blood gases, and nocturnal transcutaneous CO2 (...) were collected and analyzed. A retrospective comparison of different strategies for SDB screening was carried out. Each strategy was compared (alone and in combination) with the standard of care for sleep apnea (PSG) and nocturnal alveolar hypoventilation (...) diagnosis. The performance of the usual cutoff and visual analysis was studied. RESULTS: Among 190 subjects with SCI who underwent a full night's PSG, data were available for 104 questionnaires and 162 with oximetry. Background: Considering that few studies have investigated the differences in clinical, laboratory, and imaging symptoms of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during different peaks of the disease in Iran, the present study compares the patients who were admitted to the COVID-19 departments of Imam Reza Hospital during the first, second, and third peaks of the disease. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data were collected by reviewing the files of patients with a definite diagnosis of COVID- 19 based on the RT-PCR test in Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad. The patients were divided into three groups based on the time of admission: The first peak from March 2020 to June 2020, the second peak from July to September 2020, and the third peak from October to December 2020. The variables evaluated in this study included demographic information, clinical signs and symptoms, and laboratory and radiological findings. Descriptive qualitative data were reported using frequency tables, while quantitative descriptive data were reported using measures of central tendency and dispersion. A comparison of qualitative data among the three peaks was conducted using the chi-square test, while for quantitative data, the ANOVA test was used followed by appropriate post-hoc tests. Results: A total of 561 patients with an average age of 58.90 ± 16.80 years were included in the study, of which 336 (59.9%) were male. Regarding underlying diseases, significant differences were found in age (P < 0.001), smoking (P < 0.001), diabetes (P = 0.003), high blood pressure (P < 0.001), asthma (P = 0.025), and ischemic heart disease (P < 0.001). For vital signs, significant differences were observed in heart rate (P < 0.001), respiration rate (P < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.010), and SPO2 (P < 0.001). In clinical characteristics, significant differences were found in fever (P < 0.001), nausea (P = 0.011), vomiting (P = 0.031), headache (P < 0.001), weakness (P < 0.001), and sore throat (P < 0.001). In laboratory characteristics, significant differences were observed in white blood cell (WBC) count (P = 0.024), neutrophil percentage (P < 0.001), lymphocyte percentage (P < 0.001), and C-reactive protein (CRP) (P = 0.001). The CT score values of the patients were significantly different between the three peaks. Patient mortality was significantly different across the three peaks. Less than 15% of hospitalized patients died in the first peak, while over 24% died in the second peak and nearly 40% of inpatients died in the third peak. In our study, the first and third surges and the second and third surges had different mortalities. Conclusions: The third and first peaks had the highest and lowest mortality rates, respectively. Underlying diseases and unstable vital signs were more common in the second and third peaks. Patients in the second peak had significantly higher CT scores compared to the other peaks. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly interrupted the grieving experiences of bereaved families and drastically changed their ways of dealing with loss. Our study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience of bereaved relatives of patients who died in palliative care units during the COVID-19 pandemic. The phenomenological research design included sixteen family members of hospitalized palliative patients who died from November 2021 to June 2022. The study involved conducting qualitative in-depth semi-structured interviews with family members 12–24 months after the death of their loved ones. The interviews aimed to gather information about the experiences of the families both before and after the death. The COREQ guidelines were applied in the study. Participants were mainly female (n = 13) with a mean age of 47.25 (SD = 12.58). Data were analysed using the Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA). The following three categories were identified: (1) navigating loved ones' final weeks and days (troubled deaths); (2) the last farewell was robbed; (3) looking for adjustment after loss. One overall main theme emerged, which was as follows: "Struggling between stolen moments and painful losses to get back into the flow of life". This study provides novel insights into end-of-life care and bereavement from the perspectives of family. Our findings suggest that developing and promoting family-centred culture can lead to compassionate palliative care focused on a myriad ways of affirming that their loved one matters. Background: Communication and collaboration among health care professionals during bedside rounds improve patient outcomes and nurses' and physicians' satisfaction. Objectives: To determine barriers to nurse-physician communication during bedside rounds and identify opportunities to improve nurse-physician collaboration at an academic medical center. Methods: A survey with Likert-scale and open-ended questions regarding professional attitudes toward nurse-physician communication was administered to 220 nurses and physicians in medical-surgical units to assess perceptions of participation in bedside rounds. After the survey was given, observational data from 1007 bedside rounds were collected via a standardized data collection tool. Results: Nurses and physicians perceived different barriers to including nurses in bedside rounds. Nurses most often cited being unaware that bedside rounds were occurring (38 of 46 nurses [83%]); physicians most often cited nurse unavailability (43 of 52 physicians [83%]). Of 1007 observed rounds, 602 (60%) involved in-person contact of nurses and physicians; 418 (69%) of the 602 included a conversation between the nurse and physician about the nurse's concerns. Of 355 rounds with no in-person or telephone contact between nurses and physicians, the medicine team did not contact the nurse in 284 (80%). Conversations about nurses' concerns occurred more often after physician-initiated contacts (73% of 369 contacts) and nurse-initiated contacts (74% of 93 contacts) than after chance encounters (57% of 140 contacts). Background: Nurse‐sensitive indicators (NSI) assess the quality of nursing care provided to patients. These indicators assess the structures (supportive measures), processes (nursing actions) and outcomes of care. The McIntyre Audit Tool (MAT) was developed to measure haemodialysis NSIs. Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and utility of the MAT in measuring haemodialysis NSIs in clinical practice. Design: Multisite nonrandomized feasibility study. Participants: A convenience sample of nurses (n = 30) were recruited from two haemodialysis units in Australia. Measurements: Participants completed the MAT once daily for 1 week, to measure the extent the clinical indicators were being met. Feasibility data including utility and acceptability of the tool was collected once from each participant. Data were analysed descriptively. Results: Participants completed a total of 97 audits. Results revealed the majority of structural (75%) and process indicators (73%) were being achieved although some variation between sites was observed. Results for the outcome indicators showed more variation (5.9%–94.1). Feasibility results found most nurses (79%) took <5 min to complete the MAT and found the tool easy to use (91.7%). Most participants (83.3%) reported audits could be completed during a shift and auditing was easily implemented (79.2%). Conclusion: Use of the MAT in clinical practice is a feasible and acceptable way of auditing the quality of haemodialysis nursing practice. Background: Specialist physicians in the province of British Columbia commonly work on teams in acute care settings such as operating rooms or inpatient hospital units. However, while the implementation of team-based care (TBC) has been supported in primary care clinics, no formal mechanisms have supported specialist physicians in adopting TBC in their private outpatient offices. Adopting TBC models is associated with improving physician experience, efficiency, and patient experience. Methods: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement Breakthrough Series guided a program to support 11 specialist physicians, representing nine different specialties, to develop and implement TBC in outpatient offices. Participants were supported through resources including funding, mentorship, and learning opportunities. To determine whether the program improved physician experience, quantitative data were collected using the validated Mini Z survey and qualitative data were collected through monthly reports, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Patient experience data were collected through surveys and follow-up calls. Results: The fifteen-month program was successful, with 10 of the 11 specialists implementing TBC in their offices. The Mini Z results demonstrated that physician experience improved over the course of the program, with scores on job satisfaction, work pace, and time spent on the electronic medical record improving the most. Interviews with specialists and focus groups with specialists' team members support these findings, with participants stating that TBC modulates workloads, begins to affect burnout, improves work-life balance, and increases the efficiency of care. Patients reported positive experiences while receiving TBC. Patients were less likely to visit the emergency department after consultations with specialist teams, and providers agreed that their patients would be less likely to seek acute care because of the new practice models. Conclusion: TBC is a viable model for specialist physicians and their health care teams practicing in British Columbia to foster well-being, job satisfaction, and efficiency, and to improve patient experience. Background: Anaemia is a global public health issue that impacts individuals of all ages in both developed and developing countries. Anaemia is common in patients with diabetes mellitus; however, it is often undiagnosed and untreated. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus admitting to a medical unit at National Hospital Kandy. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients admitted to a medical ward at National Hospital Kandy (NHK). They were assessed with a pre-tested, interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire using consecutive sampling method. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 26. Results: Total 252 patients with diabetes were included. The prevalence of anaemia in patients with T2DM was 31.3%. The corresponding values for males and females were 34.2% and 65.8% respectively. Independent predictors for anaemia among diabetic patients were older age, female gender, poor glycemic control, diabetes duration > 5 years, diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, stage ≥ 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and usage of aspirin. These were significantly associated with the prevalence anemia among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender, age ≥ 65 years, diabetic duration > 5 years, poor glycaemic control, stage ≥ 3 CKD, diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy were associated with greater odds for the presence of anaemia. Conclusion: We found that 31.3% T2DM patients in a medical ward at NHK had previously undiagnosed anaemia. Anaemia screening during diabetes diagnosis, maintaining glycaemic control and raising patient awareness can reduce anaemia prevalence, improve patient quality of life and potentially reduce microvascular complications. Background: Palliative care evolution focuses on education and medication accessibility. As little as 12% of palliative care needs are met. Assessment of the domains of Palliative care and patients' and families' experience are essential in life-limiting conditions. The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), have the National Cancer Centre without offering palliative care services. Aim: The aim was to examine pattern of admissions and needs assessment for palliative services among patients admitted into LUTH wards. Materials and method: Responses were entered into a data sheet inputted into Epi info version 7.2. Descriptive characteristics of the participants were presented as frequencies and percentages for age, sex, pattern of disease, domains of Palliative care, Advance care Plan, Preparation for home care, death and Education about the illness and category of medical conditions (palliative and non-palliative conditions). Together for Short Lives (TfSL) tool was used to categorize respondents' conditions into Palliative and Non-palliative conditions. Chi-square test was used to determine association between independent variables (pattern of diagnoses, stage of disease, advanced care plan, preparation for home care/ death and education on illness) and dependent variables (category of medical condition). Chi-square test was also used to explore the association between specialty of the managing doctor (independent variable) and Advance care plan (dependent variable). The level of statistical significance was P-value < 0.05. Results: 80.6% of the respondents had palliative care conditions, 83.7% had family members as their caregiver while 13.2% of the participants had no caregiver and 65.9% had no advance care plan. There was no preparation for home care or death in 72.1%, 70.5% had education about their illness, and 68.2% were in the advanced stage of their disease. Participants attending the surgery non-trauma unit (51.6%) were more likely to have advance care plans. Adults were more likely to have palliative care conditions (79.8%) compared to children (20.2%), and was statistically significant. Conclusion: Majority of the participants need palliative care services but are unavailable and unmet and the most predominant condition was cancer. Majority had no advance care plan or preparation for home care or death despite having advanced stage of the disease. Given the increasing occurrence of invasive fungal infections and the limited efficacy of modern antifungal medications, it is crucial to disseminate information regarding the potential sources of nosocomial mycoses through the One Health approach. This study investigated the presence and antifungal susceptibility of fungi in biofilm and water samples obtained from the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) of hospitals. The positivity rate for fungi in biofilm and water samples was 41% and 9%, respectively, with Aspergillus species, a significant causative agent of nosocomial mycoses, being the predominant fungi identified. Analysis of antifungal susceptibility test revelead a comparable resistance profile between some isolated species from the DWDS and those reported for certain clinical samples. While further research is required to determine the specific contribution of waterborne fungi to nosocomial fungal infections, our results emphasize the importance of controlling biofilm formation within DWDSs, particularly in high-risk hospital wards. Background. In 2016, the South Korean Integrated Nursing‐Care Service, covered by national insurance, was initiated, with a particular focus on cancer‐oriented units. Integrated Nursing‐Care Service Wards denote facilities wherein nursing professionals deliver holistic care, in the absence of paid informal caregivers (hereafter will be called caregiver). Aim. This study, framed within Demerouti's Job Demands‐Job Resources Model, aimed to analyze variables influencing nurses' work engagement in Integrated Nursing‐Care Service wards. Methods. From April to June 2022, 375 participants working at three certified tertiary hospitals operating Integrated Nursing‐Care Service wards completed the survey. Of the 400 distributed questionnaires, 375 were used for analysis, resulting in a response rate of 93.75%. The remaining 25 questionnaires were excluded due to insufficient responses. Job demands, job resources, and personal resources were assigned as exogenous variables that predicted burnout and work engagement of nurses, while burnout and work engagement were assigned as endogenous variables. In this model, 32 hypotheses were established, and to verify the hypotheses, the direct effect of each exogenous variable on work engagement and the indirect effect through burnout as a medium were analyzed. Results. Burnout partially mediated the impact of exogenous variables on work engagement. The subfactors revealed partial mediation between emotional labor and work engagement, full mediation for satisfaction with the recognition from patients and caregivers, and partial mediation for resilience. Conclusion. Emotional labor had the highest impact on nurses' burnout in Integrated Nursing‐Care Service wards, followed by resilience and satisfaction with the recognition from patients and caregivers. Nurses' burnout, work environment, emotional labor, work overload, and resilience significantly influenced their work engagement. Implications for Nursing Management. The results of this study are useful as basic data for research on intervention programs that reduce burnout and increase nurses' work engagement in Integrated Nursing‐Care Service wards. Background: Promoting patient participation stands as a global priority in nursing care. Currently, there is a lack of a standardized tool to assess the culture of patient participation from the perspective of nurses in China. Aims: To translate and examine the validity and reliability of the Patient Participation Culture Tool for healthcare workers (PaCT-HCW) on general hospital wards in Chinese nursing context. Methods: A cross-sectional research study was conducted among 812 nurses. Brislin's recommendations were adhered to during the translation of the scale. Validity was assessed using construct validity, content validity, and face validity. Split-half reliability, test–retest reliability, and internal consistency reliability were used to evaluate dependability. The study was guided and reported following the STROBE checklist and recommendations for reporting the results of studies of instrument and scale development and testing. Results: The Chinese version of PaCT-HCW (the PaCT-HCW-C) exhibits good face validity and content validity. A rigorous exploratory factor analyse verified a six-factor (competence, support, perceived lack of time, information sharing and dialogue, response to questions and acceptance of a new role) scale structure with a cumulative variance contribution of the factors with 44 items of 68.840%. With a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.962, split-half reliability of 0.866, and intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.989, the instrument demonstrates great reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis results validated the consistency of the six factors with the structure of the PaCT-HCW-C scale. Conclusions: The 44-item PaCT-HCW-C is a valid and reliable instrument with satisfactory psychometric properties. It could serve as a tool for assessing the effectiveness of international programs aimed at fostering patient participation from the perspective of nurses, while also providing insights from China's practical experiences. Aims: Glioma patients are at high risk for postoperative delirium (POD), yet studies focusing on this population in general neurosurgical ward settings are limited. This paper investigates the incidence of POD and related risk factors in glioma patients hospitalized in general wards. Design: Prospective observational study. Methods: This prospective study included 133 adult glioma patients hospitalized in the general neurosurgery ward. In addition to collecting routine perioperative general clinical data, patients' psychological status was assessed preoperatively using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). POD was assessed within 3 days postoperatively using the Confusion of Consciousness Assessment method, twice daily. The incidence of POD was calculated, and risk factors were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results: The incidence of POD in glioma patients admitted to the general ward was 31.6% (40/133). Multivariate regression revealed advanced age (age > 50 years), frontal lobe tumour, presence of preoperative anxiety or depression, retention of a luminal drain, postoperative pain, indwelling catheter these six factors were independent risk factors for the development of delirium in patients after surgery. Conclusion: In general ward settings, supratentorial glioma patients exhibit a high risk of POD. Critical risk factors include preoperative psychological conditions, as well as postoperative pain, drainage and catheterization. Rigorous preoperative evaluations, effective pain management strategies and the integration of humanistic care principles are essential in mitigating the risk of POD for glioma patients. Relevance to Clinical Practice: In general ward settings, this study reveals the high occurrence of POD in glioma patients and identifies preoperative psychological states, age, tumour location and several postoperative factors as significant risk factors for POD, which provides a framework for targeted interventions. By integrating these insights into clinical practice, healthcare teams can better identify glioma patients at risk for POD and implement preventive measures, thereby enhancing recovery and overall care quality for glioma patients in general neurosurgical wards. Aim: To synthesize the literature on the experiences of patients, families and healthcare professionals with video calls during hospital admission. Second, to investigate facilitators and barriers of implementation of video calls in hospital wards. Design: Scoping review. Methods: PubMed, CINAHL and Google Scholar were searched for relevant publications in the period between 2011 and 2023. Publications were selected if they focused on experiences of patients, families or healthcare professionals with video calls between patients and their families; or between families of hospitalized patients and healthcare professionals. Quantitative and qualitative data were summarized in data charting forms. Results: Forty‐three studies were included. Patients and families were satisfied with video calls as it facilitated daily communication. Family members felt more engaged and felt they could provide support to their loved ones during admission. Healthcare professionals experienced video calls as an effective way to communicate when in‐person visits were not allowed. However, they felt that video calls were emotionally difficult as it was hard to provide support at distance and to use communication skills effectively. Assigning local champions and training of healthcare professionals were identified as facilitators for implementation. Technical issues and increased workload were mentioned as main barriers. Conclusion: Patients, families and healthcare professionals consider video calls as a good alternative when in‐person visits are not allowed. Healthcare professionals experience more hesitation towards video calls during admission, as it increases perceived workload. In addition, they are uncertain whether video calls are as effective as in‐person conservations. Implications for the Clinical Practice: When implementing video calls in hospital wards, policymakers and healthcare professionals should select strategies that address the positive aspects of family involvement at distance and the use of digital communication skills. Aims and Objective: To investigate the determinants of missed nursing care and to analyse the mediating effect of holistic nursing competence on the relationship between transition shock and missed nursing care. Background: Transition shock of newly graduated nurses is associated with missed nursing care. Previous studies have shown the determinants of missed nursing care among nurses, but little is known about the relationship between missed nursing care, transition shock and holistic nursing competence. Design: Descriptive and correlational design. Methods: The study was conducted among newly graduated nurses (n = 201) working in acute care hospitals for 1–12 months. The MISSCARE survey, Holistic Nursing Competence Scale and Nursing Transition Shock Scale were used for data collection, in addition to a sociodemographic question form. Data were analysed using Pearson correlation, multiple regression and mediation analyses. The study was reported following the STROBE checklist. Results: The determinants of missed nursing care among newly graduated nurses were sex, unit type, rotating shift work, holding a certificate, holistic nursing competence and transition shock. All these variables explain 35% of the variance in missed nursing care. Holistic nursing competence directly mediated 51.7% of the relationship between transition shock and missed nursing care. Conclusions: Holistic nursing competence may decrease missed nursing care by reducing the effects of transition shock on newly graduated nurses. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The study highlighted that newly graduated nurses are an important population regarding missed nursing care. The determinants of missed care should be considered in the nursing care delivery to prevent missed care by newly graduated nurses. Background: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Dyspnea, affecting up to 60% of cancer patients, exacerbates physical and psychological distress, reducing quality of life. This study aims to explore the relationship between dyspnea and factors such as age, sex, clinical diagnosis, and treatment lines in cancer patients, with the goal of improving understanding and management of this debilitating symptom to enhance patient care and quality of life. Methods: This study employed an observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive approach to investigate patients with oncological disease at the University Hospital of Salamanca between March 2021 and April 2024. A convenience sample was selected, including patients over 18 years old with a pathological diagnosis of cancer, experiencing any degree of dyspnea, and who consented to participate by signing the informed consent. Exclusion criteria included lack of consent and clinical conditions that prevented an interview. The studied variables encompass sociodemographic (age, gender, diagnosis, tumor stage, number of treatment lines) and clinical aspects (daily activities, degree of dyspnea, functional capacity, physical performance), evaluated using the Barthel Index, the mMRC Dyspnea Scale, the ECOG Scale, and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Data were collected through semistructured interviews and medical records, and analyzed using specialized software. This research has ethical approval CEiM Code 2023 12 1472, Reference 2024/01. Results: The mean age was 66.82 years. Lung cancer was predominant (60.2%), with most patients in stage 3 (65.7%) and receiving three treatment lines (68.7%). Higher age, advanced disease stage, and more treatment lines correlated with lower Barthel and SPPB scores, and higher ECOG and mMRC scores, indicating worse functionality, physical performance, and greater dyspnea. No significant correlations were found between gender or pathological diagnosis and the studied variables. Conclusions: Advanced age, higher disease stage, and more treatment lines are associated with decreased functionality, poorer physical performance, and increased dyspnea in cancer patients. Gender and specific cancer diagnosis do not significantly affect these relationships. Addressing dyspnea is crucial to improving the quality of life and physical performance in this population. Background: Viral respiratory infections may precipitate type 1 diabetes (T1D). A possible association between the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for COVID-19, and the incidence of T1D is being determined. This study was carried out using Portuguese registries, aiming at examining temporal trends between COVID-19 and T1D. Methods: Hospital data, comparing the incidence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, from children and young adults diagnosed with new-onset T1D, was acquired beginning in 2017 and until the end of 2022. Data was obtained from nine different Portuguese hospital units. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in March 2020, was assessed comparing the annual numbers of new-onset T1D cases. The annual median levels of glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting C-peptide at T1D diagnosis were compared. The annual number of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) episodes among new T1D cases was also assessed at two centers. Results: In total, data from 574 newly diagnosed T1D patients was analyzed, including 530 (92.3%) children. The mean ages for child and adult patients were 9.1 (SD 4.4) and 32.8 (SD 13.6) years, respectively. 57.8% (331/573) were male, one patient had unknown sex. The overall median (25–75 percentiles) levels of glucose, HbA1c and fasting C-peptide at diagnosis were 454 mg/dL (356–568), 11.8% (10.1–13.4) and 0.50 µg/L (0.30–0.79), respectively. DKA at T1D diagnosis was present in 48.4% (76/157). For eight centers with complete 2018 to 2021 data (all calendar months), no overall significant increase in T1D cases was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e. 90 cases in 2018, 90 cases in 2019, 112 in 2020 and 100 in 2021 (P for trend = 0.36). Two of the centers, Faro (CHUA) and Dona Estefânia (CHULC) hospitals, did however see an increase in T1D from 2019 to 2020. No significant changes in glucose (P = 0.32), HbA1c (P = 0.68), fasting C-peptide (P = 0.20) or DKA frequency (P = 0.68) at the time of T1D diagnosis were observed over the entire study period. Conclusion: The T1D incidence did not increase significantly, when comparing the years before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, nor did key metabolic parameters or number of DKA episodes change. Antimicrobials are the most frequently prescribed drug in pediatrics, with an estimated 37% of infants and 61% of hospitalized children having received them. Approximately 20–50% of prescriptions have been shown to be potentially unnecessary or inappropriate. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the continued increase in antimicrobial resistance by the year 2050 will lead to the death of 10 million people per year. This paper describes a protocol to be used in a future study to evaluate the implementation of a quarterly syndromic antibiogram, aimed to improve the use of antibiotics for the treatment of pediatric bacterial infections at the Maputo Central Hospital, Mozambique. This study uses implementation science methods framed by the Dynamic Adaption Process (DAP) and RE-AIM conceptual frameworks to develop a multi-phase, mixed-methods evaluation utilizing qualitative and quantitative approaches. The pediatric inpatient services at HCM consist of approximately 18 physicians and 60 nurses. Additionally, the microbiology laboratory consists of eight laboratory technicians. We anticipate analyzing approximately 9,000 medical records. Qualitative methods include in-depth interviews with clinicians, laboratory technicians, and administrators to explore current knowledge and practices around antibiotic decision making, facilitators and barriers to intervention implementation, as well as acceptability and satisfaction with the intervention roll-out. Qualitative analysis will be performed with NVivo 12 software. Quantitative methods include extracting data from existing records from the pediatric ward of Hospital Central de Maputo (HCM) guided by the RE-AIM framework to explore intervention utilization and other factors influencing its implementation. Quantitative descriptive and inferential statistical analysis will be performed using R Studio statistical software. The findings from this evaluation will be shared with hospital administrators and relevant national policymakers and may be used by the Ministry of Health in deciding to expand this approach to other hospitals. The expected results of this research include the development of standard operating guidelines for the creation, distribution, and use of a quarterly syndromic antibiogram for antibiotic decision making that is informed by local epidemiology. Background: Nursing Practice Environment is an important index to improve nursing quality and patient outcome. To explore the nursing practice environment in the COVID-19 ward during the period of COVID-19 and its impact on nursing quality to provide reference for setting up supporting nursing team in epidemic area in the future. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 251 nurses working in COVID-19 ward in Shanghai, Hainan and Hunan in December 2022 through stratified proportional sampling. Structured questionnaires, including general information questionnaire, professional practice environment scale and nursing quality questionnaire, were used to investigate the patients. Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlation between nursing practice environment and nursing quality, and multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of nursing quality in the COVID-19 ward. Results: The professional practice environment scale score was (3.34 ± 0.40), the nursing quality questionnaire score was (9.47 ± 0.81), both at a high level. Single factor analysis showed that nursing quality was related to educational background, physical condition, professional title, grade of the original hospital and composition of nursing staff in supported departments. Nursing quality were positively correlated with each nursing practice environment dimensions (in addition to teamwork). The results of regression analysis showed that the nursing practice environment in the COVID-19 ward had a positive impact on nursing quality. Conclusions: The nursing practice environment and nursing quality of nurses in the COVID-19ward is generally very high. The education, working hospital level and nursing practice environment of nurses are the important factors influencing nursing quality. The relationship between nursing practice environment (include leadership and autonomy in clinical practice, staff relationships with physicians, control over practice, communication about patients, handling disagreement and conflict, internal work motivation and cultural sensitivity) and nursing quality is positive. It is suggested that the hospital should pay special attention to and improve nursing practice environment in order to improve nursing quality when setting up temporary ward in the future epidemic period of infectious diseases, ensure patient safety. The aim of this article is to analyse the subjectivity of medical practice with seriously ill people. The frequency of mortality in certain hospital wards can have traumatic effects on the physician, whose suffering results from the divide between the desire to heal and the fantasy of being an executioner in the event of repeated therapeutic failures. In this context, the practitioner’s experience can oscillate between two extreme subjective positions: one, defensive, of desubjectivation of the patient; the other, emotional, of identification. These two mechanisms seem to be interwoven, as one of the functions of desubjectivation is to resist identification with the patient, which can be a source of distress. Through the testimonies of doctors in specialities such as intensive care, the author illustrates the need to recognise their emotional involvement in the relationship with patients, guaranteeing their personal and professional well-being. Background: The elimination of restrictive practices, such as seclusion and restraint, is a major aim of mental health services globally. The role of art therapy, a predominantly non-verbal mode of creative expression, is under-explored in this context. This research aimed to determine whether art therapy service provision was associated with a reduction in restrictive practices on an acute inpatient child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) unit. Methods: The rate (events per 1,000 occupied bed days), frequency (percent of admitted care episodes with incident), duration, and number of incidents of restrictive practices occurring between July 2015 and December 2021 were analysed relative to art therapy service provision. The rate, frequency and number of incidents of intramuscular injected (IM) sedation, oral PRN (as-needed medication) use, and absconding incidents occurring in conjunction with an episode of seclusion or restraint were also analysed. Results: The rate, frequency, duration, and total number of incidents of seclusion, the frequency and total number of incidents of physical restraint, and the rate, frequency and total number of incidents of IM sedation showed a statistically significant reduction during phases of art therapy service provision. This study determined the relationship between death anxiety and COVID-19 related fear and anxiety in women with breast cancer. This is a descriptive correlation-seeking study. The research included 140 women with breast cancer who visit the day treatment unit of the oncology department of a state university hospital. Personal Information Form, Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), and Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) were used to collect data. A significant difference was found between the DAS score and body mass index (p =.019) and between FCV-19S score and COVID-19 vaccination status (p =.007). As the fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety of women with breast cancer increase, death anxiety also increases. Background: Patient experience plays an essential role in improving clinical effectiveness and patient safety. It's important to identify factors influencing patient experience and to improve quality of healthcare. Objective: To identify factors that influence patient experience in hospital wards. Methods: We conducted a systematic review including six databases; they were PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycInfo, ProQuest, and Cochrane. Studies were included if they met the inclusion criteria. The JBI checklist was used to perform quality appraisal. We used 5 domains of the ecological model to organize and synthesize our findings to comprehensively understand the multi-level factors influencing the issue. Result: A total of 138 studies were included, and 164 factors were identified. These factors were integrated into 6 domains. All domains but one (survey-related factors) could be mapped onto the attributes of the ecological framework: intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community, and public policy level factors. All factors had mixed effect on patient experience. The intrapersonal level refers to individual characteristics of patients. The interpersonal level refers to interactions between patients and healthcare providers, such as the caring time spent by a nurse. The institutional level refers to organizational characteristics, rules and regulations for operations, such as hospital size and accreditation. The community level refers to relationships among organizations, institutions, and informational networks within defined boundaries, such as a hospital located in a larger population area. Public policy level refers to local, state, national, and global laws and policies, including health insurance policies. The sixth domain, survey-related factors, was added to the framework and included factors such as survey response rate and survey response time. Conclusion: The factors influencing patient experience are comprehensive, ranging from intrapersonal to public policy. Providers should adopt a holistic and integrated perspective to assess patient experience and develop context-specific interventions to improve the quality of care. Objective: To implement and evaluate the impact of a collaborative pharmacist‐medical officer model of planning discharge prescriptions, Partnered Pharmacist Discharge Prescription Planning (PPDPP) on the safe use of medicines on discharge in an ED short stay unit (SSU). Methods: A prospective pre‐ and post‐intervention study measured the proportion of medication errors on discharge prescriptions from the SSU using the Five Rights (5Rs) method. Pharmacists assessed discharge prescriptions generated by the medical officers (MO) during the pre‐intervention phase (standard practice). During the PPDPP phase, pharmacists planned electronic prescriptions in consultation with MO and completed prescriptions were independently assessed by another pharmacist. Results: There were 163 and 147 prescriptions collected during the pre‐ and post‐intervention phases, respectively. There was a significant difference in the proportion of discharge prescriptions that met all 5Rs between the standard practice (47.2%) and PPDPP phase (91.8%) (P < 0.001). There was no statistical difference seen in the mean time taken from discharge decision to prescriptions given to patients or patients leaving the SSU between the two phases. There was a non‐statically significant trend towards a decrease in time taken for patients to obtain prescriptions by 11% (P = 0.16) and for actual departure time by 6% (P = 0.46). Additionally, the proportion of opioids prescribed as one of the high‐risk medication classes reduced from 23.8% to 16.2% (P = 0.023) with the PPDPP model. In Australia, acute inpatient units within public mental health services have become the last resort for mental health care. This research explored barriers and facilitators to safe, person‐centred, recovery‐oriented mental health care in these settings. It utilised participant observations conducted by mental health nurses in acute inpatient units. These units were located in three distinct facilities, each serving different areas: a large metropolitan suburban area in a State capital, a mid‐sized regional city, and a small city with a large rural catchment area. Our findings highlighted that, in the three inpatient settings, nurses tended to avoid common areas they shared with consumers, except for brief, task‐related visits. The prioritisation of administrative tasks seemed to arise in a situation where nurses lacked awareness of alternative practices and activities. Consumers spent prolonged periods of the day sitting in communal areas, where the main distraction was watching television. Boredom was a common issue across these environments. The nursing team structure in the inpatient units provided a mechanism for promoting a sense of psychological safety for staff and were a key element in how safety culture was sustained. High‐risk behaviours are sometimes encountered in Child and Adolescent inpatient mental health units and can prompt the use of coercive practices to maintain safety. Coercive practices may lead to re‐traumatisation of young people and deteriorating therapeutic relationships. Trauma‐informed practice (TIP) has successfully reduced coercive practices. While education is identified as foundational to implementation, evaluations of programmes remain minimal. The aim of this study was to explore mental health professionals' views and experiences of a trauma‐informed education programme and its likely impact on their approach to practice. Five mental health professionals agreed to participate, four contributed in a focus group and one in an individual interview. Data were analysed thematically using the Braun and Clarke Framework. Three main themes were identified. Firstly, shifting attitudes and perceptions of trauma‐informed practice. Participants believed they had developed more compassion towards clients and these attitudes were reflected in their clinical practice. Secondly, challenges associated with trauma‐informed practice educational intervention. Staffing issues and shift work made it difficult for participants to attend education sessions regularly. Participants identified barriers to practicing in a trauma‐informed manner in the current clinical environment. Finally, the need for interdisciplinary communication and support was identified. Participants saw the need for all professionals, not only nurses, to take responsibility for changing practice, and for stronger support at the organisational level. Trauma‐informed practice is crucial to recovery‐focused mental health nursing practice. These findings highlight the importance of TIP education and suggest areas for further improvement to enhance positive mental health outcomes for young people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
