Quantum Physics ,Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We propose techniques for implementing two different rapid state purification schemes, within the constraints present in a superconducting charge qubit system. Both schemes use a continuous measurement of charge (z) measurements, and seek to minimize the time required to purify the conditional state. Our methods are designed to make the purification process relatively insensitive to rotations about the x-axis, due to the Josephson tunnelling Hamiltonian. The first proposed method, based on the scheme of Jacobs [Phys. Rev. A 67, 030301(R) (2003)] uses the measurement results to control bias (z) pulses so as to rotate the Bloch vector onto the x-axis of the Bloch sphere. The second proposed method, based on the scheme of Wiseman and Ralph [New J. Phys. 8, 90 (2006)] uses a simple feedback protocol which tightly rotates the Bloch vector about an axis almost parallel with the measurement axis. We compare the performance of these and other techniques by a number of different measures., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures. v2: Revised version after referee comments. A theoretical spectroscopic analysis of a microwave driven superconducting charge qubit (Cooper-pair box coupled) to an RLC oscillator model is performed. By treating the oscillator as a probe through the backreaction effect of the qubit on the oscillator circuit, we extract frequency splitting features analogous to the Autler-Townes effect from quantum optics, thereby extending the analogies between superconducting and quantum optical phenomenology. These features are found in a frequency band that avoids the need for high frequency measurement systems and therefore may be of use in qubit characterization and coupling schemes. In addition we find this frequency band can be adjusted to suit an experimental frequency regime by changing the oscillator frequency., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. v2: Revised version after referee comments. In this paper we propose a control strategy based on a classical guidance law and consider its use for an example system: a Josephson charge qubit. We demonstrate how the guidance law can be used to attain a desired qubit state using the standard qubit control fields., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The objectives are to measure the early time-course of the flows of blood, red cells, and plasma in brain tissue destined to infarct following arterial occlusion. The flux of fluorescent red blood cells (fRBCs) through venules and the arteriovenous transit times (AVTT) of fluorescein-labeled plasma albumin were periodically monitored in anesthetized adult Wistar rats before and up to 60 min after permanent ligations of several small branches of the middle cerebral artery. Of note, fRBC is a function of venular erythrocyte flow and volume, whereas AVTT is a function of plasma flow and volume in visible arteriole–capillary–venule units. In another group of anesthetized rats, local cerebral blood flow (lCBF) was measured 1 h after permanent arterial occlusion by [14C]iodoantipyrine (IAP) autoradiography. With this model of focal ischemia, the lesion is highly reproducible and involves part of the whisker barrel cortex. Infarction of this area was observed in 12 of 13 rats. From 10 to 60 min after arterial occlusion, AVTT was nearly four times longer in the ischemic barrel cortex than at the same site before ligations, and fRBC flux was 25%. Neither parameter changed appreciably over this time. After 60 min of ischemia, lCBF on the ipsilateral barrel cortex was 18% of that on the contralateral side and 15% of the sham control value for the same area of the barrel cortex. Since whole blood flow in the ischemic barrel cortex was

- Abstract
A giant mass-transport complex was recently discovered in the eastern Arabian Sea, exceeding in volume all but one other known complex on passive margins worldwide. The complex, named the Nataraja Slide, was drilled by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355 in two locations where it is ~300 m (Site U1456) and ~200 m thick (Site U1457). The top of this mass-transport complex is defined by the presence of both reworked microfossil assemblages and deformation structures, such as folding and faulting. The deposit consists of two main phases of mass wasting, each consisting of smaller pulses, with generally fining-upward cycles, all emplaced just prior to 10.8 Ma based on biostratigraphy. The base of the deposit at each site is composed largely of matrix-supported carbonate breccia that is interpreted as the product of debris-flows. In the first phase, these breccias alternate with wellsorted calcarenites deposited from a high-energy current, coherent limestone blocks that are derived directly from the Indian continental margin, and a few clastic mudstone beds. In the second phase, at the top of the deposit, muddy turbidites dominate and become increasingly more siliciclastic. At Site U1456, where both phases are seen, a 20-m section of hemipelagic mudstone is present, overlain by a ~40-m-thick section of calcarenite and slumped interbedded mud and siltstone. Bulk sediment geochemistry, heavy-mineral analysis, clay mineralogy, isotope geochemistry, and detrital zircon U-Pb ages constrain the provenance of the clastic, muddy material to being reworked, Indus-derived sediment, with input from western Indian rivers (e.g., Narmada and Tapti rivers), and some material from the Deccan Traps. The carbonate blocks found within the breccias are shallow-water limestones from the outer western Indian continental shelf, which was oversteepened from enhanced clastic sediment delivery during the mid-Miocene. The final emplacement of the material was likely related

Boronic acids have attracted the attention of synthetic and medicinal chemists due to boron’s ability to modulate enzyme function. Recently, we demonstrated that boron-containing amphoteric building blocks facilitate the discovery of bioactive aminoboronic acids. Herein, we have augmented this capability with a de novo library design and virtural screening platform modified for covalent ligands. This technique has allowed us to rapidly design and identify a series of α-aminoboronic acids as the first inhibitors of human ClpXP, which is responsible for the degradation of misfolded proteins.

- Abstract
The high school minimal competency examination described in this document is part one of a three-part program that requires that all students satisfactorily complete tests in reading, language arts, and mathematics prior to receiving a high school diploma. The document outlines the test development and assessment program and describes the plan for phase two, that will require junior high school students to pass a minimal competency examination before entering high school, and phase three, which will test third grade students for areas of weakness before admitting them to the intermediate level. Competency goals and objectives for the high school level are listed for (1) mathematics--simple arithmetic, computation of percentages, measurement and the metric system, fractions, and the practical application of mathematics in money, budget, grocery costs, taxes, and loan interest; (2) reading--filling out forms and applications, following directions, discerning fact from opinion, reading labels, road signs, contracts, and reference materials, and identifying the main idea in a paragraph; and (3) language arts--following oral directions, spelling, writing checks, personal and business letters, the use of basic grammar, planning a speech, and recognizing the contextual meaning of words. Methods: This was a prospective case series (NCT01230060) conducted in private practices in the US. Eligible subjects were adult patients with age-related cataract amenable to treatment with standard phacoemulsification/extracapsular cataract extraction. With follow-up of 6 months, primary safety and effectiveness end points included the rates of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-defined cumulative and persistent adverse events and the percentage of subjects who achieved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/40 or better at final visit. To evaluate rotational stability, subjects were randomized (1:1:1:1) to have the lens implanted in one of four axis positions in 45° increments. Results: A total of 122 subjects were enrolled. The rate of cumulative and persistent adverse events did not significantly exceed historical controls, as per FDA draft guidance. At the final postoperative visit, all subjects (100%) achieved a BCVA of 20/40 compared with the FDA historical control of 96.7%. Rotation of the IOL between the two final follow-up visits was ≤5° for 100% of eyes, and refractive stability was demonstrated. A low evaluation of posterior capsule opacification score was demonstrated, and no glistenings of any grade were reported for any subject at any visit. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the MX60 IOL. Favorable clinical outcomes included preserved BCVA, excellent rotational and refractive stability, no glistenings, and a low evaluation of posterior capsule opacification score. A search is performed for D-sJ(()*()+) mesons in the reactions pp -> D*(+KSX)-X-0 and pp -> D*(K+X)-K-0 using data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb detector. For the D*K-+(S)0 final state, the decays D*(+) -> D-0 pi(+) with D-0 -> K-pi(+) and D-0 -> K-pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) are used. For D*K-0(+), the decay D*(0) -> D-0 pi(0) with D-0 -> K-pi(+) is used. A prominent D-s1(2536)(+) signal is observed in both D*K-+(S)0 and D*K-0(+) final states. The resonances D*(s1)(2700)(+) and D*(s3)(2860)(+) are also observed, yielding information on their properties, including spin-parity assignments. The decay D*(s2)(2573)(+) -> D*(+) K-S(0) is observed for the first time, at a significance of 6.9 sigma, and its branching fraction relative to the D*(s2)(2573)(+) -> (D+KS0) decay mode is measured.

The first observation of the B-s(0) -> (D) over bar K-0(S)0 decay mode and evidence for the B-s(0) -> (D) over bar*K-0(S)0 decay mode are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1 collected in pp collisions by LHCb at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar (0)(K) over bar (0)) = [4.3 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst) +/- 0.3(frag) +/- 0.6(norm)] x 10(-4), B(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar*(0)(K) over bar (0)) = [2.8 +/- 1.0(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst) +/- 0.2(frag) +/- 0.4(norm)] x 10(-4), where the uncertainties are due to contributions coming from statistical precision, systematic effects, and the precision of two external inputs, the ratio f(s)/f(d) and the branching fraction of B-0 (D) over bar K-0(S)0, which is used as a calibration channel.

- Abstract
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:01:28Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015-07-01 The Arabian Sea in the northern Indian Ocean pre-serves regional sedimentary records of rifting, tectonic subsidence, and paleoceanographic history, and also provides archives of long-term erosion of the Himalaya since the start of collision between In?dia and Eurasia. Investigations reveal that drilling in this region can provide erosion records through analyses of the sediment cores, along with providing age control for the regional seismic stratigraphy. It is only by quantifying the volume of sedi?ment deposited in the fan that researchers can mass balance the volume of bedrock eroded from the mountains, constrained by thermochronology, with the volume of eroded rock deposited in the offshore and in the foreland basin. - Abstract
In the Arabian Sea, South Asian monsoon (SAM)-induced high surface water productivity coupled with poor ventilation of intermediate water results in strong denitrification within the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Despite the significance of denitrification in the Arabian Sea, we have no long-term record of its evolution spanning the past several million years. Here, we present the first record of denitrification evolution since Late Miocene (∼10.2 Ma) in the Eastern Arabian Sea, where the SAM generates moderate surface water productivity, based on the samples retrieved during the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355. We find that (i) the SAM was persistently weaker from ∼10.2 to 3.1 Ma; it did not intensify at ∼8 Ma in contrast to a few previous studies, (ii) on tectonic timescale, both the SAM and the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) varied synchronously, (iii) the first evidence of denitrification and productivity/SAM intensification was at ∼3.2-2.8 Ma that coincided with Mid-Pliocene Warm Period (MPWP), and (iv) the modern strength of the OMZ where denitrification is a permanent feature was attained at ∼1.0 Ma.

Recent advances in ocular wavefront measurement and in intraocular lens materials and manufacturing methods have brought cataract surgery to the brink of a period in which customized correction of higher-order aberrations with intraocular lenses may become standard practice.Retinal image quality in pseudophakic eyes is limited by the wavefront aberrations of the cornea and the intraocular lens. The Tecnis Z9000 is the first commercially available intraocular lens designed to account for the wavefront aberrations of the cornea, specifically spherical aberration. Clinical findings with the Tecnis Z9000 intraocular lens show improved contrast sensitivity at low and mid spatial frequencies. However, if the lens decenters or tilts modestly, higher-order aberrations are created, and the lens may underperform relative to standard intraocular lenses. At present, one firm is developing an intraocular lens that may be modified in vivo with near ultraviolet energy. Such a technology offers tremendous potential for a fully customized intraocular lens.Wavefront-customized intraocular lenses offer the promise of near perfect retinal image quality, such that only diffraction, chromatic aberration, retinal sampling and neural factors will limit vision in pseudophakic eyes.

An angular analysis of the B0 → K*0(→ K+π−)μ+μ− decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 of pp collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine CP-averaged observables and CP asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the K+π− system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of q2, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for q2-dependent decay amplitudes in the region 1.1 < q2 < 6.0 GeV2/c4, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of CP-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]

- Abstract
The Indian (southwest) summer monsoon is one of the most intense climatic phenomena on Earth, with its long-term development possibly linked to the growth of high topography in South and Central Asia. The Indian continental margin, adjoining the Arabian Sea, offers a unique opportunity to investigate tectonic–climatic interactions and the net impact of these processes on weathering and erosion of the western Himalaya. During International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 355, two sites (U1456 and U1457) were drilled in Laxmi Basin in the eastern Arabian Sea to document the coevolution of mountain building, weathering, erosion, and climate over a range of timescales. In addition, recovering basement from the eastern Arabian Sea provides constraints on the early rifting history of the western continental margin of India with special emphasis on continental breakup between India and the Seychelles and its relationship to the plume-related volcanism of the Deccan Plateau. Drilling and coring operations during Expedition 355 recovered sediment from Sites U1456 and U1457 in Laxmi Basin, penetrating 1109.4 and 1108.6 m below seafloor (mbsf), respectively. Drilling reached sediment dated to 13.5–17.7 Ma (late early to early middle Miocene) at Site U1456, although with a large hiatus between the lowermost sediment and overlying deposits dated at <10.9 Ma. At Site U1457, a much longer hiatus occurs near the base of the cored section, spanning from ~10.9 to ~62 Ma. At both sites, hiatuses span ~8.2–9.2 and ~3.6–5.6 Ma with a possible condensed section spanning ~2.0–2.6 Ma, although the total duration for each hiatus is slightly different between the two sites. A major submarine fan probably draining the western Himalaya and Karakoram must have been supplying sediment to the eastern Arabian Sea since at least ~17 Ma. Sand mineral assemblages indicate that the Greater Himalayan Crystalline Sequence was fully exposed to the surface by this time. Most of the recovered sediment a

To assess through-focus polychromatic image sharpness of five US Food and Drug Administration-approved presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) through a range of object vergences and pupil diameters utilizing an image sharpness algorithm.A 1951 US Air Force resolution target was imaged through a Crystalens AO (AO) (BauschLomb Surgical, Aliso Viejo, California), Crystalens HD (HD) (BauschLomb Surgical, Aliso Viejo, California), aspheric ReSTOR +4.0 (R4) (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas), aspheric ReSTOR +3.0 (R3) (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas), and Tecnis Multifocal Acrylic (TMF) (Abbott Medical Optics, Irvine, California) IOL in an anatomically and optically accurate model eye and captured digitally for each combination of pupil diameter and object vergence. The sharpness of each digital image was objectively scored using a two-dimensional gradient function. The AO lens had the best distance image sharpness for all pupil diameters, followed by the HD. With a 5-mm pupil, the R4 lens achieved distance image quality similar to the HD, but inferior to the AO. The R3 successfully moved the near focal point farther from the patient compared to the R4, but did not improve image sharpness at intermediate distances and showed worse distance and near image sharpness. Consistent with apodization, the ReSTOR IOLs displayed better distance and poorer near image sharpness as pupil diameter increased. The TMF lens showed consistent distance and near image sharpness across pupil diameters and exhibited the best near image sharpness for all pupil diameters.Differing IOL design strategies to increase depth of field are associated with quantifiable differences in image sharpness at varying vergences and pupil sizes. An objective comparison of the imaging properties of specific presbyopia-correcting IOLs, in conjunction with patients' pupil sizes, can be useful in selecting the most appropriate IOL for each patient.

- Abstract
The Indian (southwest) summer monsoon is one of the most intense climatic phenomena on Earth. Its long-term development has been linked to the growth of high topography in South and Central Asia. Drilling and coring operations during Expedition 355 recovered sediment from Sites U1456 and U1457 in the Laxmi Basin, penetrating 1109.4 and 1108.6 m below seafloor (mbsf), respectively. Drilling reached sediment dated to 13.5–17.7 Ma (late early to early middle Miocene) at Site U1456, although with a large hiatus between the lowermost sediment and overlying deposits dated to <10.9 Ma. At Site U1457, a much longer hiatus occurs near the base of the cored section, spanning from 10.9 to ~62 Ma.
