10. The diurnal cycle of rainfall over New Guinea in convection-permitting WRF simulations

Abstract

In this study, we examine the diurnal cycle of rainfall over New Guinea using a series of convection-permitting numerical simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. We focus our simulations on a period of suppressed regional-scale conditions (February 2010) during which local diurnal forcings are maximised. Additionally, we focus our study on the occurrence and dynamics of offshore propagating convective systems that contribute to the observed early-morning rainfall maximum north-east of New Guinea. In general, modelled diurnal precipitation shows good agreement with satellite-observed rainfall, albeit with some timing and intensity differences. The simulations also reproduce the occurrence and variability of overnight convection that propagate offshore as organised squall lines north-east of New Guinea. The occurrence of these offshore systems is largely controlled by background conditions. Days with offshore propagating convection have more middle tropospheric moisture, larger CAPE and greater low-level moisture convergence. Convection has similar characteristics over the terrain on days with and without offshore propagation. The offshore propagating convection manifests via a multi-stage evolutionary process. First, scattered convection over land, which is remnant of the daytime maximum, moves towards the coast and becomes re-organised near the region of coastal convergence associated with the land breeze. The convection then moves offshore in the form of a squall line at ~5 m s−1. In addition, cool anomalies associated with gravity waves generated by precipitating land convection propagate offshore at a dry hydrostatic gravity wave speed (of ~15 m s−1), and act to destabilise the coastal/offshore environment prior to the arrival of the squall line. Although the gravity wave does not appear to initiate the convection or control its propagation, it should contribute to its longevity and maintenance. The results highlight the importance of terrain and coastal effects along with gravity waves in contributing to the diurnal cycle over the Maritime Continent, especially the offshore precipitation maxima adjacent to quasi-linear coastlines.

12. Microscopic Approach to Cloud Droplet Growth by Condensation. Part I: Model Description and Results without Turbulence

Abstract

Recent observations have shown that even in adiabatic cloud cores, the cloud droplet size distributions are broader than what is expected if all droplets were exposed to the same supersaturation. This suggests the existence of sources of supersaturation variability independent of mixing with noncloudy air. The authors investigate the hypothesis that nonuniformity in the spatial distribution of the size and position of droplets and/or variable vertical velocity in a turbulent medium may be such a source. A 3D numerical model that solves for the trajectory and growth of individual cloud droplets in an evolving turbulent flow field is presented. In this first article of a series of two papers, results from simple experiments with no turbulent flow and with droplets randomly distributed in space are presented. It is found that the random distribution of the position of droplets creates significant supersaturation perturbations. Whether these result in an increase in the width of the size distribution depends on the width of the initial size spectrum. When sedimentation is included, droplets grow in a variable environment. Sedimentation has the effect of reducing the decorrelation time of supersaturation perturbations to a few seconds, thereby decreasing the standard deviation of the distribution of the supersaturation perturbations by 35%-50% and the dispersion of the degree of growth (time integral of supersaturation) by [approximately equals] 65%. Comparison of these results with observations made in adiabatic cloud cores lead to the conclusion that supersaturation perturbations caused by randomly distributed droplets produce too little broadening to explain the observations.

Abstract

International audience; Observations made during the TWP-ICE campaign are used to drive and evaluate thirteen cloud-resolving model simulations with periodic lateral boundary conditions. The simulations employ 2D and 3D dynamics, one- and two-moment microphysics, several variations on large-scale forcing, and the use of observationally derived aerosol properties to prognose droplet numbers. When domain means are averaged over a 6-day active monsoon period, all simulations reproduce observed surface precipitation rate but not its structural distribution. Simulated fractional areas covered by convective and stratiform rain are uncorrelated with one another, and are both variably overpredicted by up to a factor of ∼2. Stratiform area fractions are strongly anticorrelated with outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) but are negligibly correlated with ice water path (IWP), indicating that ice spatial distribution controls OLR more than mean IWP. Overpredictions of OLR tend to be accompanied by underpredictions of reflected shortwave radiation (RSR). When there are two simulations differing only in microphysics scheme or large-scale forcing, the one with smaller stratiform area tends to exhibit greater OLR and lesser RSR by similar amounts. After ∼10 days, simulations reach a suppressed monsoon period with a wide range of mean precipitable water vapor, attributable in part to varying overprediction of cloud-modulated radiative flux divergence compared with observationally derived values. Differences across the simulation ensemble arise from multiple sources, including dynamics, microphysics, and radiation treatments. Close agreement of spatial and temporal averages with observations may not be expected, but the wide spreads of predicted stratiform fraction and anticorrelated OLR indicate a need for more rigorous observation-based evaluation of the underlying micro- and macrophysical properties of convective and stratiform structures.

Abstract

International audience; An idealized case-study has been designed to investigate the modelling of the diurnal cycle of deep precipitating convection over land. A simulation of this case was performed by seven single-column models (SCMs) and three cloud-resolving models (CRMs). Within this framework, a quick onset of convective rainfall is found in most SCMs, consistent with the results from general-circulation models. In contrast, CRMs do not predict rainfall before noon. A joint analysis of the results provided by both types of model indicates that convection occurs too early in most SCMs, due to crude triggering criteria and quick onsets of convective precipitation. In the CRMs, the first clouds appear before noon, but surface rainfall is delayed by a few hours to several hours. This intermediate stage, missing in all SCMs except for one, is characterized by a gradual moistening of the free troposphere and an increase of cloud-top height. Later on, convective downdraughts efficiently cool and dry the boundary layer (BL) in the CRMs. This feature is also absent in most SCMs, which tend to adjust towards more unstable states, with moister (and often more cloudy) low levels and a drier free atmosphere. This common behaviour of most SCMs with respect to deep moist convective processes occurs even though each SCM simulates a different diurnal cycle of the BL and atmospheric stability. The scatter among the SCMs results from the wide variety of representations of BL turbulence and moist convection in these models. Greater consistency is found among the CRMs, despite some differences in their representation of the daytime BL growth, which are linked to their parametrizations of BL turbulence and/or resolution.

28. Impact of aerosols on precipitation over the Maritime Continent simulated by a convection-permitting model.

Abstract

We examine the impact of assumed cloud droplet concentration on the simulated diurnal cycle of rainfall over New Guinea and surrounding seas using convection-permitting numerical simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The simulations mimic effects of cloud condensation nuclei on cloud and precipitation processes. They follow simulations reported in Hassim et al (ACP 2016) that focused on dynamical aspects, namely the topographic forcing and the off-shore propagation of convective systems that contribute to the observed early-morning rainfall maximum north-east of New Guinea. Simulations reported in this current study apply the bulk cloud microphysics of Thompson et al. with contrasting cloud droplet concentrations of 100 and 1,000 per cc, referred to as pristine and polluted conditions, respectively. Overall, the assumed cloud droplet concentration has a small impact on the simulated convection. This emphasizes the predominant control from the diurnal cycle and the large-scale conditions. Pristine convection results in a 15-20 % larger surface accumulated rainfall over both land and ocean, and a noticeable shift of the cloud top height distribution, a reduction of the contribution of shallow cloudiness (cloud tops below 3 km) and an increase of the population of deep clouds (cloud tops above 9 km). The simulated impact on precipitation and cloud fields is in stark contrast to previous modelling studies that document small enhancement of surface precipitation and significant increase of the cloud top height in polluted conditions. Analysis of microphysical fields suggests that the simulated small enhancement of precipitation in pristine conditions comes from more efficient rain processes below the freezing level and enhanced graupel initiation and growth aloft. The increase of the cloud top height is arguably due to precipitation off-loading increasing cloud buoyancy aloft that has been shown to operate in shallow warm convection. However, the relatively low horizontal resolution and application of the bulk cloud microphysics warrants follow-up studies to assess validity of the impacts documented in the current study. Abstract

A numerical investigation of vortex breakdown has been undertaken in an attempt to understand its properties, and the mechanisms responsible for it. Solutions of the full steady axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for breakdown in an unconfined viscous vortex have been obtained for core Reynolds numbers up to 200, for a two-parameter family of assumed upstream velocity distributions. Diffusion and convection of vorticity away from the vortex core, and the strong coupling between the circumferential and axial velocity fields in highly-swirling flows, are shown to lead to stagnation and reversal of the axial flow near the axis. The various theories of vortex breakdown are considered in light of the present numerical solutions.

48. Impacts of cloud and precipitation processes on maritime shallow convection as simulated by an LES model with bin microphysics.

Abstract

This paper discusses impacts of cloud and precipitation processes on macrophysical properties of shallow convective clouds as simulated by a large-eddy model applying warm-rain bin microphysics. Simulations with and without collision-coalescence are considered with CCN concentrations of 30, 60, 120, and 240 mg-1. Simulations with collision-coalescence include either the traditional gravitational collision kernel or a novel kernel that includes enhancements due to the small-scale cloud turbulence. Simulations with droplet collisions were discussed in Wyszogrodzki et al. (2013) focusing on the impact of the turbulent collision kernel. The current paper expands that analysis and puts model results in the context of previous studies. Despite a significant increase of the drizzle/rain with the decrease of CCN concentration, enhanced by the impact of the small-scale turbulence, impacts on the macroscopic cloud field characteristics are relatively minor. We document a clear feedback between cloud-scale processes and the mean environmental profiles that increases with the amount of drizzle/ rain. Model results show a systematic shift in the cloud top height distributions, with an increasing contributions of deeper clouds and an overall increase of the number of cloudy columns for stronger precipitating cases. We argue that this is consistent with the explanation suggested in Wyszogrodzki et al. (2013) namely, the increase of drizzle/rain leading to a more efficient condensate off-loading in the upper parts of the cloud field. An additional effect involves suppressing cloud droplet evaporation near cloud edges in low-CCN simulations as documented in previous studies. We pose a question whether the effects of cloud turbulence on drizzle/rain formation can be corroborated by remote sensing observations, for instance, from space. Although a clear signal is extracted from model results, we argue that the answer is negative due to uncertainties caused by the temporal variability of the shallow convective cloud field, sampling and spatial resolution of the satellite data, and overall accuracy of remote sensing retrievals. Abstract

This paper introduces a library of algorithms for representing cloud microphysics in numerical models. The library is written in C++, hence the name libcloudph++. In the current release, the library covers three warm-rain schemes: the single- and double-moment bulk schemes, and the particle-based scheme with Monte-Carlo coalescence. The three schemes are intended for modelling frameworks of different dimensionality and complexity ranging from parcel models to multi-dimensional cloud-resolving (e.g. large-eddy) simulations. A two-dimensional prescribed-flow framework is used in example simulations presented in the paper with the aim of highlighting the library features. The libcloudph++ and all its mandatory dependencies are free and open-source software. The Boost.units library is used for zero-overhead dimensional analysis of the code at compile time. The particle-based scheme is implemented using the Thrust library that allows to leverage the power of graphics processing units (GPU), retaining the possibility to compile the unchanged code for execution on single or multiple standard processors (CPUs).
