Abstract

Several types of enrichment can be used to improve animal welfare. This review summarizes the literature on the use of mechanical brushes, tactile udder stimulation, music, and visual stimuli as enrichment methods for dairy cows. Mechanical brushes and tactile stimulation of the udder have been shown to have a positive effect on milk yield and overall behavioral repertoire, enhancing natural behavior. Classical music reduces stress levels and has similarly been associated with increased milk yield. A slow or moderate tempo (70 to 100 bpm) at frequencies below 70 dB is recommended to have this positive effect. Evidence on the impacts of other types of enrichment, such as visual stimulation through mirrors, pictures, and color lights, or the use of olfactory stimuli, is equivocal and requires further study.

Abstract

Simple Summary: This review aims to discuss the hypothalamic control of hyperthermia in livestock, including the main physiological and behavioral changes that animals adopt to maintain their thermal stability. This review analyzes the main changes that can be observed in livestock when exposed to intense heat. Vasodilation, sweating, and behavioral modifications (e.g., standing posture, shade seeking, feed intake, among others) are the results of neuronal projections from peripheral thermoreceptors to the preoptic area of the hypothalamus and effector neurons. Understanding these mechanisms can help to visualize their effect to restore thermal neutrality in livestock. Hyperthermia elicits several physiological and behavioral responses in livestock to restore thermal neutrality. Among these responses, vasodilation and sweating help to reduce core body temperature by increasing heat dissipation by radiation and evaporation. Thermoregulatory behaviors such as increasing standing time, reducing feed intake, shade-seeking, and limiting locomotor activity also increase heat loss. These mechanisms are elicited by the connection between peripheral thermoreceptors and cerebral centers, such as the preoptic area of the hypothalamus. Considering the importance of this thermoregulatory pathway, this review aims to discuss the hypothalamic control of hyperthermia in livestock, including the main physiological and behavioral changes that animals adopt to maintain their thermal stability. Abstract

Simple Summary: Infrared thermography can indirectly assess peripheral vascular diseases because skin surface temperature depends on blood flow and heat dissipation through skin microvasculature. The present review aims to summarize and analyze the application of infrared thermography in veterinary medicine as a method to indirectly assess peripheral vascular integrity and its relation to the amount of radiated heat and as a diagnostic technique for tissue viability, degree of damage, and wound care. Although additional research is needed to establish the utility of thermal imaging to monitor vascular integrity in veterinary medicine, studies performed in animals diagnosed with thromboembolisms or thermal impairment due to neuropathies or are in need of burn wound management suggest a promising application of infrared thermography to evaluate peripheral vascular alterations and tissue viability. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a technique that indirectly assesses peripheral blood circulation and its resulting amount of radiated heat. Due to these properties, thermal imaging is currently applied in human medicine to noninvasively evaluate peripheral vascular disorders such as thrombosis, thromboembolisms, and other ischemic processes. Moreover, tissular damage (e.g., burn injuries) also causes microvasculature compromise. Therefore, thermography can be applied to determine the degree of damage according to the viability of tissues and blood vessels, and it can also be used as a technique to monitor skin transplant procedures such as grafting and free flaps. The present review aims to summarize and analyze the application of IRT in veterinary medicine as a method to indirectly assess peripheral vascular integrity and its relation to the amount of radiated heat and as a diagnostic technique for tissue viability, degree of damage, and wound care. Abstract

The slaughter process in livestock is considered a stressor where the transport and handling of animals, as well as the selected stunning and bleeding methods, can cause acute pain, distress, and suffering. In water buffaloes, although stunning is known to be performed before bleeding to induce unconsciousness, no emphasis is made on the nociceptive events during this process. Particularly, current mechanical stunning methods applied to cattle are unsuitable for water buffaloes due to anatomical differences in the skull from other large ruminants. Furthermore, although very high-pressure pneumatic (200–220 psi) may be effective in the frontal position for lighter-weight water buffalos, for heavier animals, it is less likely to be effective. The present review aims: (1) to analyze the anatomical particularities of water buffaloes to discuss the importance of selecting a stunning method suitable for buffaloes, and (2) to revise the potential pain-related consequences, such as hyperalgesia and sensitization, and the signs to assess the stun quality and death to comprehend the relevance of a proper technique according to the species.

Abstract

Animal welfare is a societally relevant issue that is globally attracting increased attention. This is in addition to the importance placed on welfare for the animals themselves. However, the content and application of laws protecting animals’ welfare vary across countries. In Latin America, there are a range of common practices or activities involving certain animal species, many of which are legal, that can impair an animal’s quality of life. These include the performance of aesthetic surgical procedures; bull-, cock-, and dog fighting; and the existence of circuses that exhibit animals. The extent and impact of these practices being dependent on the socioeconomic, cultural, territorial, and regulatory landscape of each country. Particularly, Ibero-American regions face welfare challenges that might be influenced by traditions and relevant legal gaps. The objective of this article is to review controversial practices carried out in companion and entertainment animals in Latin America, with a focus on legal aspects, as well as the current efforts being made to address and incorporate global welfare standards into domestic and wild animal practice and regulation.

Abstract

El estrés por calor constituye un desafío importante para la industria láctea. Los bovinos de raza europea (Bos taurus) están adaptados al clima frío, presentando características morfo-fisiológicas que los vuelven vulnerables al estrés por calor. El aumento de la temperatura global, del número de vacas lecheras de alta producción (VLAP) y la intensificación de los sistemas productivos puede afectar su potencial productivo, reproductivo y su sistema inmune. Por primera vez se evalúa el patrón de expresión de ARNm de TNF-α y sus receptores en animales expuestos a estrés por calor. La expresión de ARNm de esta citoquina proinflamatoria y sus receptores se realizó mediante la técnica de PCR en tiempo real (qPCR), en bovinos Holando Argentino, en Tandil, Argentina. Los animales se evaluaron durante un año, en tres períodos: primavera (n = 15), verano (n = 14) y otoño (n = 11). Se utilizaron los registros del Sistema Meteorológico Nacional de Argentina para estimar el índice de temperatura y humedad (ITH). Durante el verano se analizaron 609 eventos, 471 (77.33%) excedieron el umbral crítico de 72. En primavera, 6 de 537 eventos analizados (1.11%) superaron el umbral, y en otoño, ninguno de los 993 eventos tenía un ITH>72. Los resultados demuestran una disminución en la expresión de ARNm de TNF-α y sus receptores en animales expuestos a condiciones ambientales compatibles con diestrés durante 8,5±1,09 h diarias. Este diestrés produce efectos negativos en el sistema inmune, que podrían afectar la respuesta a vacunas y aumentar la susceptibilidad a infecciones oportunistas. Abstract

La regulación de la temperatura es un mecanismo adaptativo que se adquiere con la evolución, ya que solo las aves y los mamíferos (homeotermos o endotermos) tienen la capacidad de generar respuestas fisiológicas al frío y el calor. La termorregulación en animales homeotermos se basa en respuestas fisiológicas y de comportamiento (Guerrero-Legarreta et al., 2019a,b). En el caso de los mamíferos, existen especies con gran capacidad de perder calor a través del sudor (i.e. humano, caballo) así como otras con limitada o nula capacidad de sudoración [i.e. perro, gato, cerdo y búfalo, que poseen muy pocas glándulas sudoríparas] (Ruiz et al., 2012).
