Recent interpretations of atmospheric gravity wave propagation have emphasized the importance of secondary and higher-order gravity waves. One implication of multi-stage vertical coupling of gravity waves could be an increased probability of measuring larger vertical wavelengths than would be expected from a primary gravity wave. These secondary waves are also expected to be intermittent in time and localized in space, which means that lidars are an excellent technique for detecting these phenomena. We present lidar gravity wave measurements from temperatures and winds using a zenith pointing beam and two 25-degree off-zenith beams. In each lidar field-of-view, gravity wave energy is estimated as a function of vertical wavelength and period using a Morlet wavelet analysis. This analysis is conducted at multiple altitudes in each of the three beams to determine small-scale horizontal variability, which could indicate small-scale wave activity associated with primary wave breaking.

The polar night jet, i.e., the edge of the polar vortex, maximises in the altitude range of 30 km to 70 km. The polar vortex is known to affect even underlying layers and the weather. The polar night jet shows the highest mean wind speeds observed in the atmosphere and likely plays an important role in multi-step vertical coupling not only from the ground, but also from the upper atmosphere downward.Direct measurements of the polar night jet’s extreme atmospheric motion are rare and limited to a few rocket soundings or locations with dedicated remote sensing techniques. We operate lidar and radar instruments capable of measuring temperatures and winds above northern Norway (ALOMAR, 69°N) and northern Germany (Kühlungsborn, 54°N). The instruments have observed the atmosphere frequently inside and outside the Polar Vortex for more than 10 years.Using lidar measurements of temperatures and winds allows for studying up- and downward-propagating gravity waves in complicated dynamical situations that are often found at the polar vortex edge. Observing simultaneously up- and downward propagating waves may indicate gravity wave breakdown as well as the generation of secondary gravity waves and turbulence. Turbulence is frequently detected using the MAARSY VHF radar. So called Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes (PMWE) are observed if sufficient ionisation and turbulence exist.We will discuss the relationship between waves, turbulence, and the polar vortex based on lidar and radar observations.

We present the state of the VAHCOLI (Vertical and Horizontal COverage by Lidar) project for investigating small- to large-scale processes in the atmosphere. In the future, an array of compact lidars with multiple fields of view will allow for measurements of temperatures, winds and aerosols with high temporal and vertical resolution.Doppler lidars, in particular resonance Doppler lidars, with daylight capability are challenging systems because of the small field of view, spectral filtering and other additional subsystems required compared to observations at night. We developed a universal Doppler lidar platform (~1m3, ~500kg) with all required technologies for automatic operation. The system is capable of studying Mie scattering (aerosols), Rayleigh scattering (air molecules), and resonance fluorescence on free potassium atoms in the middle atmosphere from 5 km to 100 km. Unique spectral methods and narrowband optical components allow precise wind, temperature, and aerosol measurements by studying the Doppler shift and broadening of the scattered signals. The combination of cost-efficient design and fast assembling of such a system allows the construction of a Doppler lidar network with identical unitsWe will show the latest results and discuss the next scientific and technical steps for network operation and transferring the technology into industry.

We analyze the gravity waves (GWs) observed by a Rayleigh lidar at the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR) (16.08°E, 69.38°N) in Norway at z ∼ 20–85 km on 12–14 January 2016. These GWs propagate upward and downward away from zknee = 57 and 64 km at a horizontally-displaced location with periods τr ∼ 5–10 hr and vertical wavelengths λz ∼ 9–20 km. Because the hodographs are distorted, we introduce an alternative method to determine the GW parameters. We find that these GWs are medium to large-scale, and propagate north/northwestward with intrinsic horizontal phase speeds of ∼35–65 m/s. Since the GW parameters are similar above and below zknee, these are secondary GWs created by local body forces (LBFs) south/southeast of ALOMAR. We use the nudged HIAMCM (HIgh Altitude Mechanistic general Circulation Model) to model these events. Remarkably, the model reproduces similar GW structures over ALOMAR, with zknee = 58 and 66 km. The event #1 GWs are created by a LBF at ∼35°E, ∼60°N, and z ∼ 58 km. This LBF is created by the breaking and dissipation of primary GWs generated and amplified by the imbalance of the polar night jet below the wind maximum; the primary GWs for this event are created at z ∼ 25–35 km at 49–53°N. We also find that the HIAMCM GWs agree well with those observed by the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) satellite, and that those AIRS GWs south and north of ∼50°N over Europe are mainly mountain waves and GWs from the polar vortex, respectively.

In the late 2000s, an interesting form of interhemispheric coupling (IHC) was discovered: when warming occurs in the winter polar stratosphere, the upper mesosphere in the summer hemisphere also becomes warmer with a time lag of days. This IHC phenomenon is considered to be a coupling through processes in the middle atmosphere (i.e., stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere). Several plausible mechanisms have been proposed so far, but they are still controversial. This is mainly because of the difficulty in observing and simulating gravity waves (GWs) at small scales, despite the important role they are known to play in middle atmosphere dynamics. In this project, by networking sparsely but globally distributed radars, mesospheric GWs have been simultaneously observed in seven boreal winters since 2015/16. We have succeeded in capturing five stratospheric sudden warming events and two polar vortex intensification events. This project also includes the development of a new data assimilation system to generate long-term reanalysis data for the whole middle atmosphere, and simulations by a state-of-the-art GW-permitting general circulation model using the reanalysis data as initial values. By analyzing data from these observations, data assimilation, and model simulation, comprehensive studies to investigate the mechanism of IHC are planned. We present gravity wave climatologies based on 7 years (2012–18) of lidar and Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) temperatures and reanalysis data at 54° and 69°N in the altitude range 30–70 km. We use 9452 (5044) h of lidar observations at Kühlungsborn [Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR)]. Filtering according to vertical wavelength (λz < 15 km) or period (τ < 8 h) is applied. Gravity wave potential energy densities (GWPED) per unit volume (EpV) and per unit mass (Epm) are derived. GWPED from reanalysis are smaller compared to lidar. The difference increases with altitude in winter and reaches almost two orders of magnitude around 70 km. A seasonal cycle of EpV with maximum values in winter is present at both stations in nearly all lidar and SABER measurements and in reanalysis data. For SABER and for lidar (with λ < 15 km) the winter/summer ratios are a factor of ~2–4, but are significantly smaller for lidar with τ < 8 h. The winter/summer ratios are nearly identical at both stations and are significantly larger for Epm compared to EpV. Lidar and SABER observations show that EpV is larger by a factor of ~2 at Kühlungsborn compared to ALOMAR, independent of season and altitude. Comparison with mean background winds shows that simple scenarios regarding GW filtering, etc., cannot explain the Kühlungsborn–ALOMAR differences. The value of EpV decreases with altitude in nearly all cases. Corresponding EpV-scale heights from lidar are generally larger in winter compared to summer. Above ~55 km, EpV in summer is almost constant with altitude at both stations. The winter–summer difference of EpV scale heights is much smaller or absent in SABER and in reanalysis data.

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are often cited as potential indicators of climate change in the middle atmosphere. They owe their existence to the very cold summer mesopause region (~130K) at mid and high latitudes. We analyze trends derived from the Leibniz-Institute Middle Atmosphere Model (LIMA) and the MIMAS ice particle model (Mesospheric Ice Microphysics And tranSport model). We first concentrate on the years 1871-2008 and on middle, high and arctic latitudes, respectively. Model runs with and without an increase of carbon dioxide and water vapor (from methane oxidation) concentration are performed. Trends are most prominent after ~1960 when the increase of both carbon dioxide and water vapor accelerates. Negative trends of (geometric) NLC altitudes are primarily due to cooling below NLC altitudes caused by carbon dioxide increase. Increases of ice particle radii and NLC brightness with time are mainly caused by an enhancement of water vapor caused by the oxidation of methane. Several ice layer and background parameter trends are similar at high and arctic latitudes but are substantially smaller at middle latitudes. Ice particles are present nearly all the time at high and arctic latitudes, but are much less common at middle latitudes. Ice water content and maximum backscatter are highly correlated, where the slope depends on latitude. This allows to combine data sets from satellites and lidars. Furthermore, IWC and the concentration of water vapor at the altitude of maximum backscatter are also strongly correlated. Results from LIMA/MIMAS are consistent with observations. More recently, we have expanded our model runs into the future, namely up to the 2060s. We have used IPCC scenarios regarding future concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane. We find that all NLC parameters, such as occurrence rates and backscatter coefficients increase substantially in this time period. Furthermore, we have studied the extinction of solar radiation by NLC. We will present details regarding the (wavelength-dependent) extinction and the temporal and spatial distribution of this extinction. We will also present new results on the impact of solar cycle induced radiation variability on NLC.

The high-latitude phenomenon of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) is characterised by a silvery-blue or pale blue colour. In this study, we employ the radiative transfer model SCIATRAN to simulate spectra of solar radiation scattered by NLCs for a ground-based observer and assuming spherical NLC particles. To determine the resulting colours of NLCs in an objective way, the CIE (International Commission on Illumination) colour-matching functions and chromaticity values are used. Different processes and parameters potentially affecting the colour of NLCs are investigated, i.e. the size of the NLC particles, the abundance of middle atmospheric O3 and the importance of multiply scattered solar radiation. We affirm previous research indicating that solar radiation absorption in the O3 Chappuis bands can have a significant effect on the colour of the NLCs. A new result of this study is that for sufficiently large NLC optical depths and for specific viewing geometries, O3 plays only a minor role for the blueish colour of NLCs. The simulations also show that the size of the NLC particles affects the colour of the clouds. Cloud particles of unrealistically large sizes can lead to a reddish colour. Furthermore, the simulations show that the contribution of multiple scattering to the total scattering is only of minor importance, providing additional justification for the earlier studies on this topic, which were all based on the single-scattering approximation.

A virtual meteor radar system based on the upper-atmosphere extension of the high-resolution ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic general circulation model is constructed to validate multistatic specular meteor radar (SMR) analyses. The virtual radar system examines the validity of mean winds and gradients estimation techniques used in multistatic SMRs. The study is motivated by unexpected mean values and tide-like features recently observed in the vertical velocities estimated from multistatic SMRs at different latitudes in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The proposed analysis confirms multistatic SMR systems' excellent capability to measure the horizontal mean wind components and gradient terms. It is also found that multistatic SMRs can estimate mean vertical winds if they have an amplitude greater than ±2 m/s. Due to the smoothing inherent to the model results, these results should be treated as lower bounds to the error incurred using real data. Hourly variability in vertical velocity estimates up to ±1–2 m/s in the observed vertical winds are due to contamination by small-scale horizontal structures in the horizontal winds.

We present a new method for calculating backscatter ratios of the stratospheric sulfate aerosol (SSA) layer from daytime and nighttime lidar measurements. Using this new method we show a first year-round dataset of stratospheric aerosol backscatter ratios at high latitudes. The SSA layer is located at altitudes between the tropopause and about 30 km. It is of fundamental importance for the radiative balance of the atmosphere. We use a state-of-the-art Rayleigh–Mie–Raman lidar at the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR) station located in northern Norway (69∘ N, 16∘ E; 380 m a.s.l.). For nighttime measurements the aerosol backscatter ratios are derived using elastic and inelastic backscatter of the emitted laser wavelengths 355, 532 and 1064 nm. The setup of the lidar allows measurements with a resolution of about 5 min in time and 150 m in altitude to be performed in high quality, which enables the identification of multiple sub-layers in the stratospheric aerosol layer of less than 1 km vertical thickness. We introduce a method to extend the dataset throughout the summer when measurements need to be performed under permanent daytime conditions. For that purpose we approximate the backscatter ratios from color ratios of elastic scattering and apply a correction function. We calculate the correction function using the average backscatter ratio profile at 355 nm from about 1700 h of nighttime measurements from the years 2000 to 2018. Using the new method we finally present a year-round dataset based on about 4100 h of measurements during the years 2014 to 2017.

Source at https://doi.org/10.5194/amt-12-1673-2019. We present a new method of analyzing measurements of mesospheric dust made with DUSTY rocket-borne Faraday cup probes. It can yield the variation in fundamental dust parameters through a mesospheric cloud with an altitude resolution down to 10 cm or less if plasma probes give the plasma density variations with similar height resolution. A DUSTY probe was the first probe that unambiguously detected charged dust and aerosol particles in the Earth's mesosphere. DUSTY excluded the ambient plasma by various biased grids, which however allowed dust particles with radii above a few nanometers to enter, and it measured the flux of charged dust particles. The flux measurements directly yielded the total ambient dust charge density. We extend the analysis of DUSTY data by using the impact currents on its main grid and the bottom plate as before, together with a dust charging model and a secondary charge production model, to allow the determination of fundamental parameters, such as dust radius, charge number, and total dust density. We demonstrate the utility of the new analysis technique by considering observations made with the DUSTY probes during the MAXIDUSTY rocket campaign in June–July 2016 and comparing the results with those of other instruments (lidar and photometer) also used in the campaign. In the present version we have used monodisperse dust size distributions.

Specular meteor radars (SMRs) are a major ground-based instrument to study the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere (MLT) dynamics. The recently developed multi-static approach of SMRs allows maximising the number of measurements from different viewing angles, hence enabling the estimation of horizontal wind fields and their second-order statistics (power spectrum, momentum fluxes). We have installed the operational versions of these techniques in Germany, Peru and Argentina, called SIMONe (Spread-spectrum Interferometric Multistatic meteor radar Observing Network) systems. Here, we present a validation study of multi-static meteor radar analysis by using virtual radar systems on the upper-atmosphere extension of the ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic (UA-ICON) general circulation model with a horizontal grid spacing of 5 km. This particular study is focusing on the estimates of gradients and vertical velocities with these multi-static systems.

Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) are observed since 1997 by a RMR lidar at a mid-latitude site at Kühlungsborn/Germany (54°N, 12°E). In June 2019, we detected the brightest NLC so far, having a backscatter coefficient at 532 nm of ~50-10 /m/sr, while 2.5-10 /m/sr is a typical value at this location. Another three NLC in that period reached a backscatter coefficient of more than 20-10 /m/sr. These strong NLC allow, e.g., for high-resolved studies with temporal resolution of 10 seconds and vertical resolution of 45 m. We will show examples of high-frequency oscillations in our data that cannot be found with typical integration times of several minutes. The period in June 2019 was not only unique in terms of NLC brightness, but also regarding NLC occurrence. While the all-year average is ~6 %, the occurrence rate in 2019 was 13 % and, and 20% if we consider June only. In the past, we found an anti-correlation between solar activity and NLC occurrence: Increasing solar UV radiation results in enhanced radiative heating and photolytic water vapor destruction. However, the high number of NLC in 2019 can only partly be explained by solar activity, even if the Lyman-alpha flux was slightly lower compared to previous years. TIMED/SABER monthly averaged temperature profiles showed an unusual low mesopause in June 2019, related to lower-than-average temperatures below 83 km. We claim that this as the main reason for the comparatively frequent and bright NLC. At the same time, meridional wind data of our nearby meteor radar show only weak southward winds and even a wind reversal at 93 km, which is not typical for the season. We will discuss potential reasons for the strange dynamical situation. We note that the weather dependent lidar observations are in good agreement with the radar observations of ice particles, so-called Mesospheric Summer Echoes (MSE). Co-located radar observations also showed unusually large occurrence rates of MSE in June 2019 as well as the occasion of many MSE below 83 km altitude.

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) exist at an altitude of about 83 km during the summer season at middle and polar latitudes. They consist of icy particles that exist in the polar summer mesopause region where the atmosphere is about 100 K colder than expected from pure radiative forcing. Dynamical effects, for example the dissipation of gravity waves, play an important role in the global circulation finally leading to the cold summer mesopause region. Ever since the first reports on the occurrence of NLC in 1885 the observers noticed distinct structures in the clouds that are most often wave-like. However at times the wave field becomes seemingly chaotic. State of the art lidar and camera observations of NLC allow studying small-scale structures of tens of meters in the vertical and horizontal direction. Given a high time resolution (about one second), the development of these structures is measured on temporal scales spanning the range from inertia gravity waves to acoustic gravity waves. We will show observations with the RMR-lidars at ALOMAR (Northern Norway at 69°N) and Kühlungsborn (54°N) as well as cameras located nearby these stations. Using these combined observations we study waves and their transition to turbulence.

We present results of seven years of gravity waves (GW) observations between 2012 and 2018. The measurements were conducted by ground-based lidars in Kühlungsborn (54°N, 12°E) and at ALOMAR (69°N, 16°E). Our analysis technique includes different types of filtering which allow for selection of different ranges from the entire GW-spectrum. We studied wave properties as a function of altitude and location and summarized the results in monthly and seasonally mean profiles. Complementary data is taken from the satellite-based SABER instrument. Additionally, we consistently applied our analysis technique to the reanalyses data from MERRA-2 and ERA-5. A seasonal cycle of gravity wave potential energy density (GWPED) with maximum values in winter is present at both stations in nearly all lidar/SABER measurements and in reanalysis data. For SABER and for lidar the winter to summer ratios are a factor of about 3. The winter to summer ratios are nearly identical at both stations. GWPEDs from reanalysis are smaller compared to lidar. The difference increases with altitude in winter and reaches almost two orders of magnitude around 70 km.GWPEDs per volume decreases with height differently for the winter and summer seasons, irrespective of filtering method and location. In summer for altitudes above roughly 50 km, GWPED is nearly constant or even increases with height. This feature is very pronounced at ALOMAR and to a lesser extent also at Kühlungsborn. This behavior is seen by both, lidar and SABER. The observed variation of GWPED with height can not be explained by conservation of wave action alone. The GWPED at Kühlungsborn is significantly larger compared to ALOMAR. This observation is opposite to simple scenarios which take into account the potential impact of background winds on GW filtering and Doppler shifts of vertical wavelengths and periods. We present results of observations and analyses and suggest geophysical explanations of our findings.

The polar summer mesosphere is the Earth’s coldest region, allowing the formation of mesospheric ice clouds, potentially linked to climate change. These clouds produce strong radar echoes that are used as tracers of mesospheric dynamics. Here we report the first observations of extreme vertical drafts in the mesosphere, characterized by velocities larger than 40 m/s, i.e., more than five standard deviations larger than the observed wind variability. The morphology seems to resemble mesospheric bores, however the scales observed are much larger. Powerful vertical drafts, intermittent in space and time, emerge also in direct numerical simulations of stratified flows, predicting non-Gaussian statistics of vertical velocities. This evidence suggests that mesospheric bores might result from the interplay of gravity waves and turbulent motions. Our extreme event is interpreted as a mesospheric "super-bore", impacting mesospheric mixing and ice-formation, and would potentially impact planning of sub-orbital flights, and the investigation of biological material in the near space.

NLC altitudes decrease by approximately 15-20mper increase of carbon dioxide by 1ppmv. The number of ice particles in a column and also at thealtitude of maximum backscatter is nearly constant with time. At all latitudes, yearly mean NLCappear at altitudes where temperatures are close to 145+/-1K. Ice particles are present nearlyall the time at high and arctic latitudes, but are much less common at middle latitudes. Ice watercontent and maximum backscatter are highly correlated, where the slope depends on latitude. Thisallows to combine data sets from satellites and lidars. Furthermore, IWC and the concentration ofwater vapor at the altitude of maximum backscatter are also strongly correlated. Results fromLIMA/MIMAS agree nicely with observations.

The C1-ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite Flensburg fell in Germany on September 12, 2019, in the daytime. We determined the atmospheric trajectory, velocity, and heliocentric orbit using one dedicated AllSky6 meteor camera and three casual video records of the bolide. It was found that the meteorite originated in the vicinity of the 5:2 resonance with Jupiter at heliocentric distance of 2.82 AU. When combined with the bolide energy reported by the U.S. Government sensors (USGS), the pre-atmospheric diameter of the meteoroid was estimated to 2 - 3 meters and the mass to 10,000 - 20,000 kg. The meteoroid fragmented heavily in the atmosphere at heights of 46 - 37 km, under dynamic pressures of 0.7 - 2 MPa. The recovery of just one meteorite suggests that only a very small part of the original mass reached the ground. The bolide velocity vector was compared with that reported by the USGS. We report on the retrieval of stratospheric aerosol particle size and extinction coefficient profiles from multi-color backscatter measurements with the Rayleigh&ndash, Mie&ndash, Raman lidar operated at the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR) in northern Norway. The retrievals are based on a two-step approach. In a first step, the median radius of an assumed monomodal log-normal particle size distribution with fixed width is retrieved based on a color index that formed from the measured backscatter ratios at the wavelengths of 1064 nm and 532 nm. An intrinsic ambiguity of the retrieved aerosol size information is discussed. In a second step, this particle size information is used to convert the measured lidar backscatter ratio to aerosol extinction coefficients. The retrieval is currently based on monthly-averaged lidar measurements and the results for March 2013 are discussed. A sensitivity study is presented that allows for establishing an error budget for the aerosol retrievals. Assuming a monomodal log-normal aerosol particle size distribution with a geometric width of S = 1.5, median radii on the order of below 100 nm are retrieved. The median radii are found to generally decrease with increasing altitude. The retrieved aerosol extinction profiles are compared to observations with the OSIRIS (Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imager System) and the OMPS-LP (Ozone Mapping Profiling Suite Limb Profiler) satellite instruments in the 60 ∘ N to 80 ∘ N latitude band. The extinction profiles that were retrieved from the lidar measurements show good agreement with the observations of the two satellite instruments when taking the different wavelengths of the instruments into account.

In order to understand the generation, propagation and climatology of gravity waves (GWs)observations with high temporal and vertical resolution are required. The observation of gravity waves is important to understand the vertical coupling in the atmosphere.Recent developments in lidar technology give us new possibilities to study GWs experimentally on a more or less regular basis and resolve spatial sales of 150 meters in the vertical and temporal scales of about 10 minutes. In particular, the capability to operate the lidar during daytime allows for long duration GW observations. The Doppler Rayleigh Iodine Spectrometer (DoRIS) in additionto the established hydrostatic temperature measurement technique yields simultaneous and common volume measurements of winds.At the ALOMAR observatory in northern Norway (69°N, 16°E) the gravity wave potential energy density (GWPED) in the stratosphere is shown to have a large seasonal variation with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer.In this work we use the phase relation between both zonal and meridional wind components and temperature. We study gravity waves sorted for up- and downward propagating waves under summer and winter conditions to investigate different wave propagation and generation scenarios. We discuss the winter/summer difference not only in terms of total GWPED, but in terms of wave characteristics obtained from our extended analysis technique. We demonstrate, for example, that amount of downward propagating waves is larger in winter than in summer. Also, other wave characteristics like phase speed and mean intrinsic period will be discussed.

Observing noctilucent clouds (NLC) by lidar and camera from ground reveals smallest scale structures of tens of meters and their evolution in the vertical and horizontal direction.At the altitude of nocltilucent clouds (approx. 83 km) these structures are generated by microphysical processes affecting the ice particles, pure fluid dynamics, or a combination of both. On centennial time scales the NLC are linked to microphysical changes, mostly induced by changes of the available water vapor. On scales of hours to days the clouds are linked to temperature or the large scale flow. On scales of minutes the structures are often wave-like and associated with gravity waves and turbulence. For timescales below a few minutes only sparse observations were previously available. To systematically investigate the structure of NLC on such scales we make use of the ALOMAR RMR-lidar, located in Northern Norway at 69°N, that is detecting NLC with sub-second resolution since 2011. We have developed a classification scheme to identify the most important features on timescales of a few seconds. Furthermore we use a combination of lidar, radar and camera that allows studying simultaneously the horizontal and vertical scales. We will present new results from lidars and cameras that look at noctilucent clouds above ALOMAR and Kühlungsborn (54°N) with different scattering angles. The observations are used to investigate the mechanisms that generate the extraordinary appearance of NLC when observed by naked eye.

Some of the earliest observations in the transition region between the Earth's atmosphere and space (roughly at 80-120km) come from so called `noctilucent clouds' (NLC) which are located around 83km altitude and consist of water ice particles. They owe their existence to the very cold summer mesopause region (~130K) at mid and high latitudes. There is a long standing dispute whether NLC are indicators of climate change in the middle atmosphere. We use model simulations of the background atmosphere and of ice particle formation for a time period of 138 years to show that an increase of NLC appearance is expected for recent decades due to increased anthropogenic release of methane being oxidized to water vapor in the middle atmosphere. Since the beginning of industrialization the water vapor concentration at NLC heights has presumably increased by about 40 percent (1 ppmv). The water vapor increase leads to a large enhancement of NLC brightness. Increased cooling by enhanced carbon dioxide alone (assuming no water vapor increase) counter-intuitively would lead to a decrease(!) of NLC brightness. NLC existed presumably since centuries, but the chance to observe them by naked eye was very small before the 20th century, whereas it is likely to see an NLC in the modern era. The eruption of volcano Krakatoa in 1883 has seemingly triggered the first observation of an NLC in 1885. In this presentation we extend our analysis from middle to polar latitudes and expand comparison with observations.

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) – also known as polar mesospheric clouds (PMC) – occur at mid and high latitudes during the summer months in each hemisphere and are with altitudes of about 83 km the highest clouds in the terrestrial atmosphere. NLC are an optically thin phenomenon. They are known to consist of H2O ice particles with radii of less than about 100 nm. The first reported sightings of NLC occurred in 1885, two years after the eruption of the volcano Krakatoa in 1883. They exhibit spatial and temporal variability over a large range of scales and react very sensitively to variations in ambient conditions. This high sensitivity makes them highly relevant observables for the investigation of a wide variety of different atmospheric processes including dynamical effects, solar-terrestrial interactions and long-term changes of the Earth’s middle atmosphere. The role of NLC as indicators of long-term changes in the mesopause region in particular has been a topic of intensive debate.

Wind profile information throughout the entire upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere (USLM) is important for the understanding of atmospheric dynamics but became available only recently, thanks to developments in remote sensing techniques and modelling approaches. However, as wind measurements from these altitudes are rare, such products have generally not yet been validated with (other) observations. This paper presents the first long-term intercomparison of wind observations in the USLM by co-located microwave radiometer and lidar instruments at Andenes, Norway (69.3∘ N, 16.0∘ E). Good correspondence has been found at all altitudes for both horizontal wind components for nighttime as well as daylight conditions. Biases are mostly within the random errors and do not exceed 5–10 m s−1, which is less than 10 % of the typically encountered wind speeds. Moreover, comparisons of the observations with the major reanalyses and models covering this altitude range are shown, in particular with the recently released ERA5, ECMWF's first reanalysis to cover the whole USLM region. The agreement between models and observations is very good in general, but temporally limited occurrences of pronounced discrepancies (up to 40 m s−1) exist. In the article's Appendix the possibility of obtaining nighttime wind information about the mesopause region by means of microwave radiometry is investigated.

A first sounding rocket campaign dedicated to investigate the creation mechanism of Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes (PMWE) was conducted in April 2018 from the north Norwegian Andoya Space Center (69 ∘ N, 16 ∘ E). Two instrumented sounding rockets were launched on 13th and 18th of April under PMWE and non-PMWE conditions, respectively. In this paper we give an overview of the PMWE sounding rocket mission. We describe and discuss some results of combined in situ and ground-based measurements which allow to verify existing PMWE theories. Our measurements ultimately show that: a) polar winter mesosphere is abounded with meteor smoke particles (MSP) and intermittent turbulent layers, b) all PMWE observed during this campaign can be explained by neutral air turbulence, c) turbulence creates small-scale structures in all D-region constituents, including free electrons; d) MSP ultimately influence the radar volume reflectivity by distorting the turbulence spectrum of electrons, e) the influence of MSP and of background electron density is just to increase SNR.

Simultaneous measurements of rocket-borne and ground-based instruments in a common volume were performed from Andoya, Norway (69° N, 16° E) in frame of the recent PMWE-project, devoted to clarify the formation mechanism behind polar mesosphere winter echoes (PMWE). This article focuses on measurements of April, 13th 2018. Despite low solar activity, we observe several radar echoes, giving the launch criterion. Combining precise in-situ ionization gauge and wave propagation measurements with ground-based radar measurements on 53.5 and 3.17 MHz, as well as lidar, we were able to measure key parameters of PMWE formation. Carefully analyzing the atmospheric background (i.e., temperature, viscosity, Brunt-Vaisala frequency, and scale heights of electron and neutral density), deriving turbulence parameters by means of radar and rocket, as well as estimating particle sizes of meteor smoke particles (MSP), we got a deep insight into the physical processes behind the PMWE phenomenon. Measurements clearly show that the coherent structures in refractive index variations (forming PMWE) are accompanied by neutral air turbulence, which is reflected in small-scale structures (down to some meters) of neutral and electron density. We analyze and discuss the temporal development of the radar echos by means of spectral width and wind measurements. We show that the behavior of the structures under investigation together with the atmospheric background is consistent with the interpretation, that PMWE were created by turbulence. Furthermore, it becomes clear that charged Meteor Smoke Particles (MSP) and background electron density can only enhance SNR, while turbulence is a prerequisite for their formation.

A very bright bolide illuminated the sky over Denmark and neighboring countries on February 6th, 2016 at 21:07:18-23UT. It terminated by a multiple meteorite fall in the heavily populated area of the western outskirts of Copenhagen. Several meteorites classified as the H5/6 ordinary chondrites have been found shortly after the fall and total recovered mass reached almost 9 kg (Haack, 2016). Although this spectacular bolide has been reported by many casual witnesses, the instrumental records are very scarce, mainly due to bad weather over Denmark and neighboring countries. Despite it we were able to collect five instrumental records taken from different locations which were useful for the analysis of this event. We used three high resolution digital photographic images taken in Germany, one high resolution radiometric light curve taken by the northernmost Czech automated fireball observatory and one video record taken by a surveillance camera on the Danish west coast where a part of the fireball trajectory was recorded. It allowed us to reliably determine basic parameters defining the luminous trajectory of the bolide in the atmosphere and also heliocentric orbit of the initial meteoroid causing this spectacular meteorite fall. We found that this event was caused by a relatively fragile 50 cm meteoroid with initial mass about 250 kg. It entered the atmosphere with velocity of 14.5 km s −1 and quite steep entry angle of 62°. Its luminous flight started at 85.5 km and after 76 km long trajectory it terminated at 18.3 km. The heliocentric orbit of this meteoroid was of Apollo type with low inclination of 1° and perihelion distance just inside the Earth's orbit. It had a relatively large semimajor axis of 2.8 AU and aphelion distance 4.64 AU. It is the second largest aphelion distance among all meteorites with known orbits and the orbit had the same character as that of the Kosice meteorite (H5 ordinary chondrite), which fell on February 28, 2010 (Borovicka et al., 2013).

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are measured by the Rayleigh/Mie/Raman-lidar at the ALOMAR research facility in Northern Norway (69°N, 16°E) since 1994. The data set contains about 2860 h of NLC detections and is investigated for the first time regarding trends. NLC properties depend on cloud brightness which is taken into account by the use of several cloud classes, related to brightness ranges. For NLC brighter than the long-term detection limit and strong NLC, respectively, the trend terms show increasing occurrence frequency (+9%/dec and+5%/dec) and brightness (+1.7×10−10 m−1 sr−1/dec and +1.5×−10 m−1 sr−1/dec) from 1998 to 2015. In the same period the altitude of faint and long-term limit clouds decreases (−66 m/dec and −108 m/dec). Over the entire time period of 22 years strong clouds show an increasing altitude by +76 m/dec. NLC properties are affected differently by solar and atmospheric parameters. In general, Lyman-α and stratospheric ozone impact all three NLC parameters, temperature at 83 km impacts mainly the NLC altitude. Time series of RMR lidar and SBUV satellite instruments match best for NLC occurrence frequency and brightness when restricting SBUV to the morning data at longitudes around ALOMAR (64–74°N, 8–24°E/0–9 LT). This suggests longitudinal dependent trends, which is confirmed by trend investigations of longitudinal subsets of the SBUV data set.

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) have been observed with the ALOMAR Rayleigh/Mie/Raman lidar at 69° N using a temporal resolution of 30 s since 2008. We present an approach to identify and analyze the localized small scale wave structures of the varying altitude of the NLC layers in the range of 5–30 min that may be caused by gravity waves. Small scale gravity waves breaking in the mesopause region contribute notably to the momentum flux but are difficult to observe and to characterize. The approach is based on a template matching method using generalized structures to be identified in the NLC observations. The new method permits the identification of structures that are present in NLC only for a time too short to appear in a Fourier or wavelet spectrum. Without the need for a continuous time series the method can handle multiple NLC layers and data gaps. In the 2000 h of NLC data from the years 2008–2015, we find almost 5000 single wave structures with a total length of 738 h. The structures are found on average 400 m below the NLC centroid altitude and a large number of the structures has a length at the lower limit of 5 min. With the background wind from the meteor radar near ALOMAR a horizontal scale is estimated based on the length of the individual structures. The distribution of horizontal scales shows a peak of wave structures at 15–20 km in accordance with the horizontal wavelengths found by ground-based camera observations of NLC.

Two mountain wave events, which occurred over northern Scandinavia in December 2013 are analysed by means of airborne observations and global and mesoscale numerical simulations with horizontal mesh sizes of 16, 7.2, 2.4 and 0.8 km. During both events westerly cross-mountain flow induced upward-propagating mountain waves with different wave characteristics due to differing atmospheric background conditions. While wave breaking occurred at altitudes between 25 and 30 km during the first event due to weak stratospheric winds, waves propagated to altitudes above 30 km and interfacial waves formed in the troposphere at a stratospheric intrusion layer during the second event. Global and mesoscale simulations with 16 and 7.2 km grid sizes were not able to simulate the amplitudes and wavelengths of the mountain waves correctly due to unresolved mountain peaks. In simulations with 2.4 and 0.8 km horizontal resolution, mountain waves with horizontal wavelengths larger than 15 km were resolved, but exhibited too small amplitudes and too high energy and momentum fluxes. Simulated fluxes could be reduced by either increasing the vertical model grid resolution or by enhancing turbulent diffusion in the model, which is comparable to an improved representation of small-scale nonlinear wave effects.

The stratopause is by definition the transition between the stratosphere and mesosphere. During winter the circulation at mid-latitudes and high latitudes in the stratosphere is mainly driven by quasi-stationary planetary waves (PWs), while the circulation in the mesosphere is mainly driven by gravity waves (GWs). The question arises of whether PWs or GWs dominate the variability of the stratopause. The most famous and dramatic variability of the middle atmosphere is a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) generated by PWs interacting with the polar vortex. A similar phenomenon but smaller in magnitude and more regional is stratopause temperature enhancements (STEs) initially observed by local measurements and generated by breaking PWs. Thus it seems that PWs dominate the variability of the stratopause. In this study we want to quantify to which extent quasi-stationary PWs contribute to the stratopause variability. To do that we combine local lidar observations at Kühlungsborn (54∘ N, 11∘ E) and Andenes (69∘ N, 16∘ E) with global MERRA-2 reanalysis data bringing the local variability of the stratopause into the global context. Therefore we compare the temperature time series at Kühlungsborn and Andenes at 2 hPa, the altitude where STEs maximize, with characteristics (amplitude and phase) of PWs with wave numbers 1, 2 and 3. We found that for Kühlungsborn and Andenes 98 % of the local day-to-day variability of the stratopause can be explained by the variability of PWs with wave number 1, 2 and 3. Thus, the winter stratopause day-to-day variability is highly dominated by the variability of PWs.

We report on the retrieval of stratospheric aerosol particle size and extinction coefficient profiles from multi-color backscatter measurements with the Rayleigh-Mie-Raman lidar operated at the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR) in northern Norway. The retrievals are based on a two-step approach. In a first step the median radius of an assumed log-normal particle size distribution with fixed width is retrieved based on the color ratio formed from the measured backscatter ratios at wavelenghts of 1064 nm and 532 nm. An intrinsic ambiguity of the retrieved aerosol size information is discussed. In a second step, this particle size information is used to convert the measured lidar backscatter ratio to aerosol extinction coefficients. The retrieval is currently based on monthly-averaged lidar measurements covering the period from the year 2000 to present. A sensitivity study is presented that allows establishing an error budged for the aerosol retrievals. Assuming a log-normal aerosol particle size distribution with a geometric width of S = 1.3, median radii on the order of 100 nm are retrieved. The median radii are found to generally decrease with increasing altitude. The retrieved aerosol extinction profiles are compared to observations with various current and past satellite instruments.

An advanced hodograph-based analysis technique to derive gravity waves (GW) parameters from observations of temperature and winds is developed and presented as a step-by-step recipe with justification of every step in such an analysis. As a most adequate background removal technique the 2D-FFT is suggested. For an unbiased analysis of fluctuation whose amplitude grows with height exponentially we propose to apply a scaling function of the form exp(z/(ςH)), where H is scale height, z is altitude, and the constant ς can be derived by a linear fit to fluctuation profiles and should be in a range 1–10 (we derived ς = 2.15 for our data). The most essential part of the proposed analysis technique consist of fitting of cosines- waves to simultaneously measured profiles of zonal and meridional winds and temperature and subsequent hodograph analysis of these fitted waves. The novelty of our approach is that its robustness ultimately allows for automation of the hodograph analysis and resolves many more GWs than it can be inferred by manually applied hodograph technique. This technique is applied to unique lidar measurements of temperature and horizontal winds measured in an altitude range of 30 to 70 km. A case study of continuous lidar observations from January 09 to 12, 2016 with the ALOMAR Rayleigh-Mie-Raman (RMR) Lidar in Northern Norway (69° N) is analyzed. We use linear wave theory to identify 4507 quasi monochromatic waves and apply the hodograph method which allows to estimate several important parameters of the observed GW. This technique allows to unambiguously identify up- and downward propagating GW. In the vicinity of the polar night jet ∼ 30 % of the detected 15 waves propagate downwards. The upward propagating GW predominantly propagate against the background wind, whereas downward propagating waves show no preferred direction. The kinetic energy density of upward propagating GW is larger than that of the downward propagating waves, whereas the potential energy is nearly the same for both directions. The mean vertical flux of horizontal momentum in the altitude range of 42 to 70 km for the detected waves is about 0.65 mPa for upward propagating GW and 0.53 mPa for downward propagating GW.

In this paper we present an overview of measurements conducted during the WADIS-2 rocket campaign. We investigate the effect of small-scale processes like gravity waves and turbulence on the distribution of atomic oxygen and other species in the MLT region. Our analysis suggests that density fluctuations of atomic oxygen are coupled to fluctuations of other constituents, i.e., plasma and neutrals. Our measurements show that all measured quantities, including winds, densities, and temperatures, reveal signatures of both waves and turbulence. We show observations of gravity wave saturation and breakdown together with simultaneous measurements of generated turbulence. Atomic oxygen inside turbulence layers shows two different spectral behaviors, which might imply change of its diffusion properties.

Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) occur during summer from midlatitudes to high latitudes. They consist of nanometer-sized ice particles in an altitude range from 80 to 90 km and are sensitive to ambient temperature and water vapor content, which makes them a suitable tracer for variability on all timescales. The data set acquired by the ALOMAR Rayleigh–Mie–Raman (RMR) lidar covers 21 years and is investigated regarding tidal signatures in NLCs. For the first time solar and lunar tidal parameters in NLCs were determined simultaneously from the same data. Several NLC parameters are subject to persistent mean variations throughout the solar day as well as the lunar day. Variations with lunar time are generally smaller compared to variations with solar time. NLC occurrence frequency shows the most robust imprint of the lunar semidiurnal tide. Its amplitude is about 50 % of the solar semidiurnal tide, which is surprisingly large. Phase progressions of NLC occurrence frequency indicate upward propagating solar tides. Below 84 km altitude the corresponding vertical wavelengths are between 20 and 30 km. For the lunar semidiurnal tide phase progressions vary symmetrically with respect to the maximum of the NLC layer.

Trends derived from the Leibniz-Institute Middle Atmosphere Model (LIMA) and the MIMAS ice particle model (Mesospheric Ice Microphysics And tranSport model) are presented for a period of 138 years (1871–2008) and for middle, high and arctic latitudes, namely 58 °N, 69 N ∘ N, and 78 °N, respectively. We focus on the analysis of mesospheric ice layers (NLC, noctilucent clouds) in the main summer season (July) and on yearly mean values. Model runs with and without an increase of carbon dioxide and water vapor (from methane oxidation) concentration are performed. Trends are most prominent after ∼ 1960 when the increase of both CO2 and H2O accelerates. It is important to distinguish between tendencies on geometric altitudes and on given pressure levels converted to altitudes (‘pressure altitudes’). Negative trends of (geometric) NLC altitudes are primarily due to cooling below NLC altitudes caused by CO2 increase. Increases of ice particle radii and NLC brightness with time are mainly caused by an enhancement of water vapor. Several ice layer and background parameter trends are similar at high and arctic latitudes but are substantially different at middle latitudes. This concerns, for example, occurrence rates, ice water content (IWC), and number of ice particles in a column. Considering the time period after 1960, geometric altitudes of NLC decrease by approximately 260 m per decade, and brightness increases by roughly 50% (1960–2008), independent of latitude. NLC altitudes decrease by approximately 15–20 m per increase of CO2 by 1 ppmv. The number of ice particles in a column and also at the altitude of maximum backscatter is nearly constant with time. At all latitudes, yearly mean NLC appear at altitudes where temperatures are close to 145 ± 1 K. Ice particles are present nearly all the time at high and arctic latitudes, but are much less common at middle latitudes. Ice water content and maximum backscatter ( β max ) are highly correlated, where the slope depends on latitude. This allows to combine data sets from satellites and lidars. Furthermore, IWC and the concentration of water vapor at β max are also strongly correlated. Nearly all trends depend on a lower limit applied for β max , e.g., IWC and occurrence rates. Results from LIMA/MIMAS are in very good agreement with observations.

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are mesospheric ice clouds occurring in the summer hemisphere at high latitudes and an altitude of about 83km. This region is the coldest of the earth’s atmosphere and is characterized by the presence of wave interaction and dissipation. The processes involved here lead to a variety of structures and instabilities that become visible in noctilucent clouds and are observed by different instruments. In this work high-resolution lidar measurements are used to give a wide overview of the structures at small scales below the Brunt–Vaisala period of ∼ 5min. For the first time a large amount of NLC profiles from lidar with a temporal resolution of 1s is analyzed in detail, covering about 1400h during the summer from 2011 to 2018. A new categorization focusing on small-scale structures is introduced, and occurrence statistics for these categories in the season of 2014 are performed. Both wave structures with periods below 10min and thin layers of 100m thickness are commonly found. When taking simultaneous wind measurements into account, we find that structures often are advected by the wind.

The middle atmosphere (from about 10–110 km altitude) is a highly variable environment at seasonal and sub-seasonal timescales. This variability influences the general atmospheric circulation through the propagation and breaking of planetary and gravity waves. Multi-instrument observations, performed in the framework of the ARISE (Atmospheric Dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe) project, are used to quantify uncertainties in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models such as the one of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). We show the potential of routine and measurement campaigns to monitor the evolution of the middle atmosphere and demonstrate the limitations of NWP models to properly depict small-scale atmospheric disturbances. Continuous lidar and radar measurements conducted over several days at ALOMAR provide a unique high-resolution full description of solar tides and small-scale structures. Nightly averaged lidar profiles routinely performed in fair weather conditions at the Observatoire Haute-Provence (OHP) and Maido observatory (Reunion Island) provide a year-to-year evolution of stratosphere and mesosphere temperature profiles. Routine meteor radar observations depict the evolution of wind profiles and solar tides in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. With the recent development of the portable Compact Rayleigh Autonomous Lidar (CORAL) which automatically measures temperature profiles at high temporal resolution, the possibility of combining different instruments at different places is now offered, promising the expansion of multi-instrument stations in the near future. Through a better description of infrasound propagation in the middle atmosphere and stratosphere–troposphere couplings, these new middle atmosphere datasets are relevant for infrasound monitoring operations, as well as for weather forecasting and other civil applications.

We present a new extended method of analyzing measurements of mesospheric dust made with DUSTY rocket-borne Faraday cup probes. It yields the variation of fundamental dust parameters through a mesospheric cloud with an unrivalled altitude resolution down to 10 cm or less. A DUSTY probe was the first probe which unambiguously detected charged dust/aerosol particles in the Earth's mesosphere. DUSTY excluded the ambient plasma by various biased grids, which however allowed dust particles with radii above a few nanometer to enter, and it measured the flux of charged dust particles. The flux measurements directly yielded the total ambient dust charge density. We extend the analysis of DUSTY data by using the impact currents on its main grid and the bottom plate as before, together with a dust charging model and a secondary charge production model, to allow the determination of fundamental parameters, such as dust radius, charge number and total dust density. We demonstrate the utility of the new analysis technique by considering observations made with the DUSTY probes during the MAXIDUSTY rocket campaign in June–July 2016 and comparing the results with those of other instruments (Lidar and photometer) also used in the campaign.
