Nursing workload (NWL) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is an essential parameter of patient safety. However, little attention has been dedicated to measuring NWL in ICU about patients surgically treated with myocardial ischemia (MI). Methods: The objectives of this study are to describe and examine the NWL by applying the Nursing Activities Score in patients who underwent non-cardiac surgery and developed MI in the ICU. The statistical significance was set at 0.05. The statistical program SPSS 22.0 was used for the analysis. The mean age was 69.1 years, whereas 32.4% of the patients had MI. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia were the main comorbidities. On the first day in ICU, the NWL was similar in all patients (p = 0.947). In the following days, the NWL was significantly higher in patients with MI (p0.001). The NWL was considerably higher in patients with MI who died. The present results are essential for planning and using nursing resources according to the care needs of postoperative patients with MI.

Multidrug resistant infections in intensive care units represent a worldwide problem with adverse health effects and negative economic implications. As artificial intelligence techniques are increasingly applied in diagnosing, treating, and preventing antimicrobial resistance, in this study, we explore the use of association rule mining in the antibiotic resistance profile of critically ill patients suffering from multidrug resistant infections.

Introduction The incidence of postoperative myocardial ischemia (POMI) remains uncertain and underdiagnosed despite significant morbidity and mortality rates. Methods This study included patients who underwent non-cardiac surgery. Troponin T (TnT) was measured on the first three postoperative days. The revised cardiac risk index, HAS-BLED (hypertension, abnormal renal/liver function, stroke, bleeding history or predisposition, labile international normalized ratio (INR), elderly, drugs/alcohol concomitantly) bleeding score, and CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), vascular disease, age 65 to 74 years, sex category) score were combined. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to estimate the discriminative ability of preoperative troponin for myocardial ischemia (MI). Results Of 105 patients with a mean age of 69.1 years, 32.4% had MI. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia were the main risk factors. A ROC analysis indicated that a preoperative value of 17.2 pg/ml or higher of troponin was significantly associated with MI. Moreover, a higher CHA2DS2-VASc score was associated with POMI. Conclusions POMI is associated with high mortality and a long stay in the intensive care unit. Routine use of different scores before surgery can be very useful.

Cellular senescence refers to a stress response aiming to preserve cellular and, therefore, organismal homeostasis. Importantly, deregulation of mitochondrial homeostatic mechanisms, manifested as impaired mitochondrial biogenesis, metabolism and dynamics, has emerged as a hallmark of cellular senescence. On the other hand, impaired mitostasis has been suggested to induce cellular senescence. This review aims to provide an overview of homeostatic mechanisms operating within mitochondria and a comprehensive insight into the interplay between cellular senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Background: Investigating quality of life (QoL) is of crucial importance for the scientific community as it could function not only as an indicator of prognosis and post-traumatic clinical and psychological changes in patients who have suffered from acute brain injury (ABI), but also as an indicator of the effectiveness of their treatment and social rehabilitation. In addition, it can highlight changes in the carer’s health, social life and well-being. This study examined the QoL of patients following ABI and the needs of their carers.Material and methodology: This study was conducted in patients suffering from ABI, who were admitted to the General Hospital of Attica “KAT” and to the National Rehabilitation Center and on their carers. Data collection including demographics and Quality of Life After Brain Injury Questionnaire (QOLIBRI) and the Family Needs Questionnaire (FNQ) was performed during patients’ rehabilitation, while six months after release, a follow-up survey was conducted using the same questionnaires. Statistical analysis of data was performed using SPSS.Results: We analysed 50 patients with mild ABI (GCS ≥ of 13/15) during rehabilitation and six months after release and found that their QoL improves and is positively related to improvement of health status (i.e. in terms of thinking ability, QoL improves from r = 2.33, p < .01 to r = 3.37, p < .001). We also found that “Age” has the greatest impact on the patient’s progress for recovery and the general QoL after ABI (r = -0.423, p < .01). In addition, it was found that carers of patients with ABI are confronted with the burden of care, while they record both fulfilled and unmet needs regarding their individual needs (i.e. only for 30% of the sample the need for help in preparing them for the worst is met).Conclusions: Our study confirms previous findings that underline that ABI has a major impact on QoL of both patients and their carers providing them with long-term daily care. Although it has been found that over time there is an improvement in the QoL of patients with ABI, the absence of an official support network for carers from public health system, hospitals and rehabilitation centers may adversely affect the QoL of patients and their carers. Therefore, more structured, long-term family-wide monitoring and support is needed, focusing on identifying those at risk of social isolation and incomplete social networking.

Introduction: Alcohol use during adolescence remains a prominent public health problem with short- and long-term consequences. The study aims at investigating the epidemiological characteristics of alcohol use among Greek adolescents. Important parallel aims were to identify alcohol-related problems and its consequences experienced by the adolescence. Methods: The study population was a convenience sample of 1100 students of secondary education (junior and senior high school) from 12 public and private schools in Athens. 573 boys and 527 girls aged 12 to 19 years old [mean age 15.3 (±1.7)] answered a specially structured anonymous questionnaire. Results: Recent alcohol consumption was reported by more than the half of students (57.3%) and was more prevalent among adolescents over 15 years old (67.3%) and among boys (59.3%). Beer was the most popular type of alcoholic beverage (65.9%) at all ages. On average, both males and females stated the onset of alcohol at the age of 12 years. Boys reported being drunk more often than girls (25.7% versus 14.9%). However, more girls reported being drunk at least once a year than boys (27.1% versus 17.6%). The vast majority of the participants stated that they were informed about the possible addiction to alcohol (86.2%) and its negative consequences. A statistically significant correlation was found between age and hangover (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Alcohol consumption remains a serious problem among adolescents. There is a need to implement preventive measures and counseling approaches in school. The study will contribute to the public awareness concerning adolescent’s drinking behavior in Greece.

The mastoid process originates from a recent phylogenetic formation and is currently considered as an evolution of the supper-structures bones. The aim of this study was the detailed description of the anatomic elements of the mastoid and the temporal bone in a large Greek adult corpse material. In total, 298 temporal bones from 149 cadaverous (74 male and 75 female) were examined from 1973 through 1993. Concerning the shape of the mastoid apex 94.0% were normal, while the rest presented several variations No statistically significant difference was revealed between genders. The diameters and axis of the temporal bone presented an independent correlation with gender in a multiple regression model. This prescription may add in easier surgical approach by adding new morphological details directly from the corpse material.
