1. Rubbing induced reversible fluorescence switching in thiophene-based organic semiconductor films by mechanical amorphisation

Abstract

Here, we applied rubbing on thiophene-basedorganic semiconductor thin films to induce a reversible mechanical amorphisation. Amorphisation is associated with fluorescence switching, which is regulated by the polymorphic nature of the film. Thermal annealing of rubbed films produces an opposite effect with respect to rubbing, inducing film crystallization. Notably, thermal crystallisation starts at a low temperature but generates the polymorph stable at a high temperature in the bulk. The mechanism of mechanical transformation is explained considering the mechanical properties of the material and demonstrated through combined X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence at confocal microscopy. Abstract

As fabrication and positioning of micro- and nanocrystals grow in importance in a wide range technological applications, there is an increasing requirement for the development of a shared technological platform that is able to process materials from solutions on large areas. Here, the application of lithographically controlled wetting (LCW) for the manipulation and positioning of single crystals directly on devices is reported. In the LCW, a stamp, consisting of a metallic grid, is positioned in contact with a liquid thin film spread on a substrate; under these conditions, the capillary forces pin the solution to the stamp protrusions, thus splitting the continuous film in separated droplets or channels. As the solvent evaporates and the solution reaches the saturation, the solute precipitates onto the substrate within the menisci, giving rise to a structured thin film, in correspondence of the protrusion of the stamp. The possibility to achieve a patterning of crystals of conjugated molecules with a defined shape and with controlled size directly on device is demonstrated and pattern of crystals are investigated using polarized optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction; they are also electrically characterized. The application of lithographically controlled wetting on the manipulation and positioning of single crystals directly on devices. It is demonstrated that it is possible to achieve patterning of crystals of conjugated molecules with a defined shape and with controlled size directly on a device.

Abstract

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), combined with the lithography, were employed to fabricate functional surfaces. A new strategy in SAM technology, by using reiterated micro contact printing process, was proposed to produce a multi-level fluorescent TAG (multi-TAG), which consists of two overlapping micrometric patterns, made of a fluorescent oligothiophene SAM bonded with a Si/3-aminopropylthriethoxysilane substrate. The samples were characterized by fluorescence microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). In particular, the process of chemical interaction occurring during the self-assembling was investigated. The obtained results showed that the SAM process occurred with the amidic bond formation. Moreover, the grazing-angle XPS measurements indicated that the horizontal arrangement of oligothiophene molecules on the substrate surface was preferred.

17. Thin deposits and patterning of room-temperature-switchble one-dimensional spin-crossover compounds

Abstract

We present a study on thin deposits and patterning of 1-D spin-crossover compounds FeII-(L)2H](ClO4)3 3MeOH [L = 40-(4000-pyridyl)-1,20:60100-bis- (pyrazolyl) pyridine] (1) that exhibit a reversible, thermally driven spin transition at room temperature. Micrometric rodlike crystals of 1 on silicon surfaces are achieved by drop casting and solvent annealing. We observed that the crystallinity of thin deposits and spin-transition properties critically depends on the deposition procedure. Furthermore, we proved processability and patterning using unconventional wet lithography that reduces the crystallite formation time by 1 order of magnitude. Thin deposits of 1 were characterized by atomic force microscopy, polarized optical microscopy and X-rays, and the switching properties were characterized by Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract

In an attempt to change the beta-adrenergic properties of completely aliphatic 3-(methyleneaminoxy)propanolamine derivatives, from antagonist to agonist, while still retaining the beta 2-selectivity, we described, in a previous paper, the synthesis of a series of such derivatives possessing a hydroxy or methoxy group linked to the aliphatic substituent present on the oximic carbon. However, pharmacological tests indicated that these compounds maintain the competitive antagonism on beta receptors. In this paper, the synthesis and the results of functional tests on isolated preparations are reported for a new series of 3-(substituted-benzylideneaminoxy)propanolamine derivatives in which either the hydroxy or the methoxy group is linked to a phenyl ring present on the oximic carbon. The results obtained are then discussed, taking into account the conformational and reactivity properties of these compounds, determined by means of theoretical calculations.

Abstract

A limited sampling model of etoposide after oral administration to estimate the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from 0 to 24 h (AUC) by determination of the drug plasma levels at only two time points was developed by a multiple regression analysis on a training data set of 15 patients receiving oral doses ranging from 54 to 90 mg/m2. The equation describing the model is AUC (micrograms ml-1 h) = 5.183 (micrograms ml-1 h) + 1.193 (h) x C1h (micrograms/ml) + 8.439 (h) x C4h (micrograms/ml) (R2 = 0.93, P = 0.0001), where C1h and C4h represent the plasma etoposide concentrations at 1 and 4 h, respectively. The model was validated prospectively on a test data set of 13 patients receiving oral doses ranging from 52 to 87 mg/m2 and, additionally, on a data set of 7 patients receiving oral doses ranging between 176 and 200 mg/m2, investigated in a previous study. Validation on both test data sets gave a relative mean predictive error of 0.1% and a relative root mean square error of 15.8% and 16.7%, respectively. The present study shows that it is possible to obtain a good estimate of the plasma AUC after oral administration of etoposide using a two-time-point sampling model. The model can be used to monitor the etoposide AUC in patients receiving chronic oral treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
