In cultural heritage, paint stratigraphies are complex systems typically consisting of various paint layers with fine crystalline phases mixed with coarse pigment and filler grains. This complexity poses significant challenges for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. In this work, we employed synchrotron radiation micro-X-ray diffraction in transmission geometry (SR-µTXRD) with linear mapping to develop a novel approach for studying the crystalline phases (pigments and fillers) in mock-up paint stratigraphies. A targeted approach was followed for qualitative, quantitative, and microstructural analysis, combining signals from micrometric crystallites and coarse single crystals as well as from randomly oriented and iso-oriented crystalline phases. This allows for identifying, localizing, and quantifying these phases even in low fractions and distinguishes the same phases across different layers with varying grain sizes or spatial orientations. Critical analysis of 2D XRD patterns, coupled with full-profile fitting performed by the Rietveld method, provides insights into material preparation (e.g., grinding), painting technique (e.g., color palette, use of fillers, brushing), and crystallo-chemical modifications over time. This analytical approach, integrating spatially resolved investigation with high-quality phase characterization, enhances the potential of specific XRD methodologies for a 2D investigation of multi-phase materials in cultural heritage, even without dedicated micro-mapping techniques. The crystal chemistry of inderborite, a B-rich mineral (B2O3 ~41 wt%) with ideal formula CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2·6H2O or CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2(H2O)4(H2O)4·2H2O from the Inder Deposit, Kazakhstan, was re-investigated by a multi-methodological approach (single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis in wavelength-dispersive mode, laser ablation multi-collector inductively mass spectrometry). The experimental findings show that the real chemical formula of inderborite from the Inder Deposit is virtually identical to the ideal one: the fraction of potential isomorphic substituents is insignificant. Boron is, therefore, the only industrially relevant element occurring in this mineral. The in situ B isotope composition of the Inder inderborite shows enrichment in the heavy 11B isotope, giving a weighted mean δ11BNIST951 of +35.15 ± 0.49 ‰ (2σ, N = 6). Such a positive δ11B value falls within the range of values in which the source of boron is ascribable to marine reservoirs rather than to terrestrial ones. X-ray (at 293 K) and neutron (at 20 K) structure refinements confirm that the principal building block unit of the structure is a [B3O3(OH)5]2– ring, consisting of two BO2(OH)2 tetrahedra (B-ion in sp3 electronic configuration) and one planar-triangular BO2OH group (B-ion in sp2 electronic configuration). In the [B3O3(OH)5]2– ring, all the oxygen atoms that are not shared between two boron atoms are protonated. The building units share corners with the CaO2(OH)4(OH2)2 polyhedra and Mg(OH)4(OH2)2 octahedra, forming hetero-polyhedral sheets parallel to (100). Subsequent hetero-polyhedral sheets are mutually connected only by H-bonding interactions, even mediated by the zeolitic ("interstitial") H2O molecules. Ten out of 11 independent oxygen sites in the structure of inderborite are involved in H-bonds as donors or acceptors, and this reflects the pervasive effect of the H-bonding network. The role played by the complex H-bond network is expected to be substantial on the stability of the crystalline edifice, having effects within the single hetero-polyhedral sheet, between subsequent sheets, and in the bonding with the interstitial zeolitic H2O molecules. Finally, the potential utilizations of inderborite, as a B-bearing mineral, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The crystal chemistry of inderite, a hydrous borate with known ideal formula MgB
3 O3 (OH)5 ·5H2 O from the Kramer deposit, was re-investigated by electron probe micro-analysis in wavelength dispersive mode, laser ablation-(multi collector-)inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and single-crystal neutron diffraction. The chemical data prove that the real composition of the investigated inderite is substantially identical to the ideal one, with insignificant content of potential isomorphic substituents, so that, excluding B, inderite does not contain any other industrially-relevant element (e.g., Li concentration is lower than 2.5 wt ppm, Be or REE lower than 0.1 wt ppm). The average δ11 BNIST951 value of ca. − 7 ‰ lies within the range of values in which the source of boron is ascribable to terrestrial reservoirs (e.g., hydrothermal brines), rather than to marine ones. Neutron structure refinements, at both 280 and 10 K, confirm that the building units of the structure of inderite consist of: two BO2 (OH)2 tetrahedra (B-ion in sp3 electronic configuration) and one BO2 (OH) triangle (B-ion in sp2 electronic configuration), linked by corner-sharing to form a (soroborate) B3 O3 (OH)5 ring, and a Mg-octahedron Mg(OH)2 (OH2 )4 . The B3 O3 (OH)5 ring and the Mg-octahedron are connected, by corner-sharing, to form an isolated Mg(H2 O)4 B3 O3 (OH)5 (molecular) cluster. The tri-dimensional edifice of inderite is therefore built by heteropolyhedral Mg(H2 O)4 B3 O3 (OH)5 clusters mutually connected by H-bonds, mediated by the zeolitic (“interstitial”) H2 O molecules lying between the clusters, so that the correct form of the chemical formula of inderite is Mg[B3 O3 (OH)5 ](H2 O)4 ·H2 O, rather than MgB3 O3 (OH)5 ·5H2 O. All the thirteen independent oxygen sites of the structure are involved in H-bonding, as donors or as acceptors. This confirms the pervasive nature and the important role played by the H-bonding network on the structural stability of inderite. The differences between the crystal structure of the two dimorphs inderite and kurnakovite are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Understanding the effects of consolidating inorganic mineral treatments on carbonate stones of cultural heritage, and on the nature and distribution of newly formed products within the matrix, poses a significant challenge in Heritage Science and Conservation Science. Existing analytical methods often fail to deliver spatial and compositional insights into the newly formed crystalline phases with the appropriate high lateral resolution. In this study, we explore the capabilities and limitations of synchrotron radiation (SR) micro-X-ray powder diffraction (μXRPD) mapping combined with micro-X-ray fluorescence (μXRF) to give insight into compounds formed following the application of ammonium oxalate (AmOx) and diammonium phosphate-based (DAP) solutions on porous carbonate stone. Ultimately, the integration of μXRPD mapping and μXRF analysis proved itself a powerful asset in providing precise qualitative and quantitative data on the newly formed phases, in the case of both calcium oxalates (CaOxs) and calcium phosphates (CaPs), and their complex stratigraphic distribution, thus opening a new route for applications to a more comprehensive study of inorganic treatments applied to carbonate substrates. A natural intermediate member of the scapolite solid solution {Me47; chemical formula: (Na1.86Ca1.86K0.23Fe0.01)(Al4.36Si7.64)O24[Cl0.48(CO3)0.48(SO4)0.01]}, with the unusual I4/m space group, has been studied at various temperatures and combined high-T and high-P by means of in situ single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, using both conventional and synchrotron X-ray sources. In addition, single-crystal neutron diffraction data were collected at ambient-T and 685 °C. A fit of the experimental V-T data with a thermal equation of state yielded a thermal expansion coeficient at ambient conditions: αV25°C = 1/V0·(∂V/∂T)P,25°C = 1.74(3)·10–5 K–1. A comparative analysis of the elastic behavior of scapolite based on this study and previous high-T XRD data suggests that a thorough re-investigation of the diferent members of the marialite-meionite solid solution is needed to fully understand the role of crystal chemistry on the thermal behavior of these complex nonbinary solid solutions. The experimental data obtained within the full temperature range of analysis at ambient pressure confirm that the investigated sample always preserves the I4/m space group, and possible implications on the metastability of I4/m intermediate scapolite are discussed. Neutron difraction data show that no significant Si and Al rearrangement among the T sites occurs between 25 and 685 °C. The combined high-T and high-P data show that at 650 °C and between 10.30(5) and 10.71(5) GPa a phase transition toward a triclinic polymorph occurs, with a positive Clapeyron slope (i.e., dP/dT > 0). A comprehensive description of the atomic-scale structure deformation mechanisms induced by temperature and/or pressure, including those leading to structural instability, is provided based on single-crystal structure refinements. The beryl-group mineral johnkoivulaite, Cs(Be2B)Mg2Si6O18, was compressed hydrostatically in a diamond-anvil cell up to 10.2 GPa. In situ Raman spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography revealed a P6/mcc-to-P 3 c1 (second-order) phase transition on isothermal compression at the critical transition pressure Pc = 4.13 ± 0.07 GPa. The elastic parameters determined for the volume elasticity of the two polymorphs correspond to a Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with K0 = 148 ± 2 GPa and K ′ = 0 for P < Pc and K0 = 75.5 ± 0.9 GPa with K ′ = 4 for P > Pc. The low-P polymorph shows anomalously linear compression behavior, as reported for several other beryl-derived framework structures. The high-P polymorph, which was found to follow a a ′ = a ⋅ 3 , c ′ = c superstructure according to P 3 c1, is almost twice as compressible as its low-P form. This is unique for any beryl-derived structure and can be attributed to the high degree of freedom for atomic displacements in the superstructure. The reduced symmetry can also be understood as the effect of the driving mechanism of the transformation. The extra-framework Cs channel components counteract any lateral deformation of the channels parallel to [0001] within the microporous framework and, similar to pezzottaite, are responsible for maintaining the trigonal/hexagonal lattice metrics.
